Dani Monroe is more than just another jaded woman. Her veins run deep with every reason to never fall in love. If her mother taught her anything, it was how easily a betrayal is earned. After a childhood spent learning that lesson, it's the only truth she knows. Now, as a woman with needs, she strictly dates married men. She knows what she is getting with them—all of the fun and none of the feelings—and that’s how she likes it.
Lucas Kane has only ever been in love once. Disloyalty followed soon after and he wants no part of "a future" with anyone ever again. But having the same conversation with different women became redundant. So he slipped on a wedding ring, and soon realized there were many women out there very attracted to married men. Those same women asked no questions when it came time to say goodbye. So he carries on like this—faking a married life and fooling around.
A chance encounter brings the two together and while it sounds like a match made in heaven, both are leery, with cynical hearts. What happens when two people hell bent on avoiding love find themselves falling? How many lies have they told? Will the truth set them free, or rip them apart?
Kat Savage’s unique brand of storytelling combines some of her own truths with a little bit of fiction to connect to people in a very real way. She writes about ugly things authentically and shamelessly.
She only dates married men as she doesn't want a real relationship because her mother taught her a lot about betrayal!!!???
So if you are afraid of betrayal, why would you sleep with men who betray their wives? Isn't this a bit of a hypocrisy?
***
And then there is this guy who doesn't want to commit to a woman so he pretends to be married. This way, no women expect him to do what regular boyfriends do.
***
Then these two people meet: Sounds like a match made in heaven!!!! :)))
How can I like a heroine who sleeps aroud with MARRIED men and doesn't care? Or a Hero who pretends to be married just so that he too can sleep around with women and not worry about commitment? I don't care how well story is written or how broken these two are, if the characters have no sense of respect for the sanctity of marriage, at the end of the day, they become cheaters and lousy human beings and that is not what I want to waste my time & money on. So no thanks!
"I just didn't see you coming," I say. "I didn't see you coming, Lucas."
With my strict "no cheating tropes" rule that I have applied for myself, I was very weary on how much I would like With This Lie. But surprise, surprise! Kat did a fantastic at executing a story line that wasn't quite what it seemed. Which in turn ended up being such a great story in my opinion.
My most favorite thing about With This Lie was how music plays a such huge part of this story and even with the characters. At times, it's even their way of communicating. I LOVE THAT! I can't express that enough. I love when people choose to use music to tell the words that they can't. It adds a type of beauty that can't be portrayed with words. Bonus points that it was music that I like.
The secondary characters were a fantastic addition. I am always a huge fan when an author can take characters who are not the main focus and make them seem so interesting without taking much away from the main characters. Kat did that with Quinn. She did a killer job too. I will be very excited to see if we get treated with a Quinn story down the line.
"The world is no place for softness, for vulnerability. It will destroy it. It will take a soft thing and bend it until it breaks. The world is no place for tears or hearts. I leave that all in here in the closet. This is the only place it's ever felt safe to do so."
The tone of the book was not my favorite but I think the more you go along-- the more it grows on you. The book as a whole was just kind of...sad because you can sense the impending doom coming to these characters but yet it still never lost my attention. I was ready to know what was going to happen and when it was going to happen.
With This Lie was a quick paced read but 9 times out of 10 those are the books I tend to find myself more attached to. Even with its quickly driven plot, it was still enjoyable and packed with emotions. I loved the added mystery aspect and the little twists that unraveled throughout the story adding an additional fun little twist to the story itself.
And as always, I checked a few high ratings reviews and surprise, surprise, a lot of talking about authors talent with words, how different the book is, how it gripped them from 1st page, how it brought up "the feels", how characters are not what they seem, the story is deeper than what the blurb implies, of course they were waiting for that moment when things go down hill for the main mcs etc. etc. and absolutely zero, nothing, nada about the plot. 🤔🤔🤣🤣😏😏😏😏🙄🙄 Does anyone still fall for those?? 🤦🏻♀️
A lot of readers won't like this one because the heroine only indulges in sex with married men and the hero wears a wedding band to pretend he's married. Those are two big tropes that are hot buttons for some readers.
Dani had a really tough childhood. I felt for her and understood her hesitations with relationships and love in general. She needed therapy. I didn't like her callous attitude about the marriages she was messing with, but on the other hand, it was liberating having a female character who wasn't a typical doormat virgin.
Lucas was weak. He was a user. I didn't like him very much. His reasons for pretending to be married was because he had been cheated on in the past. It didn't seem like enough of a reason to behave the way he did.
Safety: In the beginning, they were both with other people and just breaking it off. We got to see each of their ghosting process. CRUDE to say the least. It didn't make either one of them look like winners. Both were stuck in a cycle of getting a new partner and when that one stops working find another one. Feelings weren't involved. AT ALL.
In the end, we are supposed to believe they fall in love. I didn't. But I can say they deserved each other. At the very least, they aren't playing with any other unsuspecting people.
I love characters that are a little broken because I find them the most realistic and relatable. And Dani and Lucas definitely have their issues.
“The world is no place for softness, for vulnerability. It will destroy it. It will take a soft thing and bend it until it breaks. The world is no place for tears or hearts. I leave that all in here, in the closet. This is the only place it’s ever felt safe to do so.”
Kat did a great job bringing these characters to life. I wanted to be Dani’s best friend and swooned hardcore over Lucas.
“No one else seems to actually appreciate honesty the way they say they do. Everyone wants the truth, but only if it fits into their box, if it fits their needs. If it doesn’t, well, then you’re not being honest, you’re being a dick. I guess I just fail to see the difference.”- yep, I love Dani.
This was such an easy and enjoyable read. And I loved the role that music played in the story. It was like back ground character. This novel also highlighted Kat’s growth as a writer, and I can’t wait to see what’s next.
4.5* I love the way Kat writes her characters to life. Both Dani and Lucas resonated with me early on, and I found myself invested. Their chemistry kept me intrigued and turning those pages.
I’ve had the pleasure of reading some of Kats poetry which is powerful in its own right. And her first novel For Now, which I enjoyed but With this Lie is easily my favourite of the two.
Not your typical romance, which is both refreshing and welcome. It was a quick steady read and not drawn out unnecessarily; she made each word count. It held just the right amount of tension and angst.
I particularly enjoyed how she managed to weave Dani’s love for music in too.
“I’m thinking I will miss these lips when they’re gone,” he says, brushing his fingers over my lips as he says it. “I’m thinking I will miss these kisses, the touch of your skin, your warmth. I’m thinking one day they will go. I’m thinking one day I will no longer get to do this with you and it will make me sad.”
^^^ That right there. Honestly, you’ll be missing out by not reading this book.
Never assume you know someone’s story from their actions or the lies they tell to the world. This was an absolutely beautiful, heartbreaking and unique love story. I was hooked after reading the blurb for the book, intrigued by the premise of the heroine Dani only dating married men and the hero Lucas, pretending to be a married man - both trying to avoid commitment by different means. If you think you won’t find any redeeming qualities in these two, you are sorely mistaken, Dani and Lucas are just two lost soles with what society deems as unacceptable coping mechanisms. They are both broken and the comfort and chemistry they find in each is life altering. The unexpected twists and turns that this book takes the reader on adds an element of suspense to the already interesting plot line. I devoured this book and definitely fell for the villains! 5 Stars for me!
This book was a quick yet enjoyable read, and Kat’s eloquent, vivid writing kept me flipping the pages. I appreciated that there was just enough drama in this book to leave an undertone of tension and foreboding without dragging on unnecessarily. The chemistry between Dani and Lucas was palpable, and I loved them together while at the same time understanding their past traumas and why they made the decisions they did. Kat has always wowed me with her poetry, and her ability to convey that same emotion in full-length form shows just how versatile she is as an artist.
This was such a good book. I love reading about characters who are relatable and who have flaws. Kat's characters were so dynamic, their back stories were so heartbreaking. I was rooting for them the entire time. Good people do bad things, they make mistakes, I really enjoyed watching Dani and Lucas' story unfold. Kat has such a way with words and I am always moved by them.
From the very first page I was intrigued with this book. The words on the page just seemed to flow into me. I was consumed with the theme. It was something I hadnt read before and at first I was nervous. By the end of the story I was in love with it!
This is my first book by this author, this was an easy and fast paced story. Likable character, awesome storyline. Can’t wait to read other books by this author.
Flawed characters doing flawed shit is my favorite. This book was so on brand for Kat Savage. It has that melancholy tone. The story/ premise was interesting. It even had a little twist. It started really strong and had such beautifully written moments. At times i felt the story was told to me and not shown. 🙈 but overall a really solid story!!
Also, I just want to say that people cheat. No one makes a married person stray from their marriage unless the married person is open to the idea. No one can make a married person be unfaithful. That’s just not how infidelity works. And I get it, it’s threatening and scary and a little “real” and too close to home to read in a fantasy life. But to call a character a home wrecker for being in those types of relationships is lame. Because ultimately, it’s the husband who has allowed the breach.
Kat Savage is a new to me author, one I decided to read at the suggestion of an author whose work is beautiful and emotionally exhausting – just like I like my books – so I assumed I was in good hands. And I was. With This Lie wasn’t a particularly long read, just over three hours, but it put me through the wringer in the best possible way. I was immediately pulled into Dani’s story – and Lucas’ – and couldn’t bear to leave a single stone of their story together unturned.
The premise of With This Lie is not for everyone; in fact, it’s a hardline for tons of readers, but I’m sure that, if those taboo details of how Dani – and Lucas, to an extent – conducted their personal lives were overlooked and forgiven, the hurt, hope, and healing we find in this book would soften the hardest of hearts. The idea of cheating may have been the instigation of Dani and Lucas’ relationship, but it was far from what was actually going on between them. Their unusual circumstances gave them the safety and security they both required to explore their connection.
Most of With This Lie was bittersweet. There was an air of melancholy throughout the novel, even in the happiest moments. The inevitability of their situation colored each second of Dani and Lucas’ relationship. Add to that Lucas’ secret and their pasts, and there was a pervasive darkness that permeated every page of With This Lie. There was a richness in the word that made the storm clouds looming over Dani and Lucas feel palpable throughout each page of the book.
I received this book for free from in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
"I just didn't see you coming..."
There was so much I didn’t see coming while reading With This Lie. I was initially giving this book the side eye because of the premise (“she strictly dates married men”) but Kat Savage hit it out of the park with her sophomore novel. There were twists and surprises around every corner combined with a sweet and steamy romance that did not leave me hating the main characters for their decisions. Instead, I strongly identified with them and their past heartbreaks and betrayals. Kat wrote characters that were truly products of what life had thrown at them and I think we can all relate to that on some level.
“I get the impression I’m a little more of a free spirit than he wants. He needs someone compliant, someone submissive. He needs someone who doesn’t take up too much space and I make it my prerogative to take up a shit ton of space in any situation.”
I couldn’t have described myself any better!

I have to admit this book was a bit hard for me. Although I adore these types and they are some of my top reads this one just had an overwhelming shadow of sadness and longing for almost the entire book. It made my heart hurt and I truly wasn't sure there would ever be any sunshine to break through the darkness. Sure we had tiny glimpses of happiness but with the way this author set the story up we knew without a doubt our hearts and the hearts of the characters were going to be broken and that always overshadowed any happiness we felt.
I adored every single character in this book for different reasons. Okay, not all of them. There was one I wanted to throat punch with everything I had but Dani proved how strong and resilient she was when dealing with him. Dani, Lucas, Quinn, Robert, even Dani's mom. They all their significant roles and I cheered for all of them at some point.
The backstories of Dani and Lucas are what really drove this story for me. I had a visceral need from the very beginning to know why they were the way they were. Kat did a great job with the pace of this one to reveal things just as we needed them. This is what kept me hooked.
This is my first book by this author but you can bet I will be reading more of her.
I finished reading With This Lie last night. Since then, I was contemplating hard if I will give 4 stars or 5 stars. Sometimes I feel that way about books, I really don't know what should I give them.
And yes, I gave ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ in the end. Because really, Kat and this novel deserve it.
This is not your ordinary love story where in the couple fall for each other at the right time and place.
It all started in a lie. A lie to protect themselves.
To be honest, I don't like a novels about cheaters and liars but this one really captures me and my heart. I kept reading and reading. Until I found the words "THE END".
I love Dani. I love that she loves music! I love how much she loves her mother. I love how strong she is even after all the events she had gone through.
As for Lucas, ehemmmm! He's so lovable. He thinks of what's good for Dani and gives her all the best things you can ask for. He is so sweet in his own way.
This novel made me realize that no matter how much we stop ourselves from falling in love, it will come at the moment we least expect it.
I really really love your writings, Kat! Will wait for your future works! Will always be your fan! ❤️
A little broken, a lot badass. Those are the characters I love to read the most, and Dani doesn’t disappoint. She’s unapologetic about who she is and why, and you don’t really blame her once you learn the why. If you do, congratulations on never having been burned in life. Also, quit lying.
Lucas is jaded, and for good reason. I connected with him the most; that need for self-preservation. The anxiety that comes with it. The constant internal struggle of living a lie. And I wanted to shake him every step of the way.
Kat pulled the full gamut of emotions out of me with this story and these characters, and the handful of twists and “what?!” moments weaved throughout the book were a nice treat!
This was the first book I have ever read by Kat Savage. It falls in the 3.5-4 point range for me. I enjoyed the story lines and the characters. However, I didn't feel the chemistry. I wanted raw deep in the bones chemistry between the main two characters. I just didn't feel it like I wanted. However, with that said, I enjoyed the friendships between Quinn and Dani. I enjoyed the back stories that came along with Dani and Lucas. It helped explain why they are how they are. And, really, who can blame them once you find out. This book has a bit of a suspense element in it. However, it was almost a little too easy to figure out.
I went into this book unsure of what to think. I thought I wouldn’t like the book because of the premise of two people who use marriage as a reason to avoid attachment. Dani and Lucas surprised me though I loved them both. I loved their issues and flaws. I enjoyed every part of the story and the ways that they struggled with their demons. I think Kat has a unique way with words and I really liked the flow of this book. They both grew a lot and I loved everything about this book! You have to read it and overlook the cheating and marriage issue as it is not a huge point in this book.
Kat Savage delivers. I loved the story from the beginning. I liked their determination to fight off the inevitable. As well as their chemistry. Kat wrote an excellent, real, creepy ass bad guy. But he didn’t take over the story. The two main leads did that enough with their choices at how to do love. I was invested from the get go. And I always look forward for more from Kat. So I’m excited to see what she comes up with next!!
This book was a lot of fun. A quick read, with interesting main characters, I couldn't wait to see where their story would take them. I particularly liked the real touches the author throws into her writing, comments about every day things like morning breath. It made them seem even more real to me. I liked their love story and the evolution of the characters, and their inner voices. Can't wait to see what's coming next from Kat Savage!
I adore Kat's poetry, but I am starting to see her as not just a great poet, but a great novelist as well. These characters she created are complex and deeply flawed, just how I like them! Dani is complex, just how I like my characters. She endured more suffering in her childhood than any one person should endure in their whole life. She has had to look out for herself for a while now, and that includes protecting her heart. In fact, I saw a lot of myself in Dani (aside from the whole dating married men thing). Then there is Lucas, sweet Lucas. He had his heart broken in one of the worst ways possible. So, it’s understandable that he wants to do what he can to prevent that from happening again. These two lost souls find each other and it seems like the perfect pairing in order to protect the walls around their cynical hearts. Until those walls start to break down leaving them vulnerable. I was so invested in Lucas and Dani and did not want to put this book down. I really loved the musical tie-ins as well. Personal preference here, but I wanted a little longer Epilogue. I wanted to know more about Robert and Stella (Did they hit it off?), even Charlotte. I was obviously full immersed in this book and can’t wait for Kat’s next one!
[1.5 star] was wondering should i give this book a chance with the negative comments due the plot is link to cheating & lying.
overall, to be honest i don't feel that it's a terribly written book. i don't support or agree with the heroine only sleeping with married man nor the hero lying about being married. however that being said, the plot is kind of different as there are so many cliché books which the plot have repeated a hundred times plus the fact i have read much more terrible books. LOL.
i think there are some ways the book can be improve on: 1) like omitting the 3rd party pov so that it feels more mysterious rather than know who the psycho stalker is. 2) also when the author wrote out the psycho stalker's name, it's obvious that he is the hero's brother since they have the same name, coincidence don't happen that often. 3) the hero's brother seems to hate him a lot, why didnt they hash it out? also author did not mention what happen to the brother after the hero punched him. slightly incomplete with the details left out.
Dani and Lucas are not your typical characters. Each of them have flaws, troubled pasts, and some kinks to work out in themselves before they're truly ready for love.
But what happens when two people who have sworn off love in the traditional sense, meet, and unexpectedly fall for each other?
Savage did a wonderful job writing authentic, real characters. People who are triggered by cheaters should steer clear of this book, even though, the more you progress through the story, you will realize they are not actual cheaters. (A lesson in refraining from judging others is at play here. Unfortunately, some will never get there.)
A not-what-you-expect page turner about two people grappling with the upper hand, the more open heart, and a stubbornness at putting ego aside for true happiness, With This Lie will hook you and leave you hurting for the heroine who doesn't think love is all it's cracked up to be because of a traumatic childhood.
I really can put into words how amazingly Kay wrote the pain these two people were going through and how they numbed it. Is it something that will make you uncomfortable maybe, but life isn’t always comfortable and sometimes you have to be in those moments to see something great when you get past it. Even if you are only reading.
I can say it’s a beautiful story of getting past it all and finding yourself stronger on the other side. I can say there is love and sadness and laughter and heartache and all that is life. And while you may read the a little and think well.... just keep reading. It’s worth it. It’s totally worth.
Life is always worth a risk and books are as well. And then there is the gift of music ghat Kay gives us with this book, she weaves music throughout each the story in a way you can see how it can heal.
