A princess, kidnapped by a demon king.

Now I know what you will be thinking, the poor thing. Is anyone going to save her? How will she survive? Well, um, throw out all those ideas, and just worry about the monsters and the demon king. :P

Yes, our princess isn't so weak, so silly, instead she is awesome, and she is a danger to all the critters in the castle. She is on a quest to sleep well, and she will do anything for it. Including cutting up living blankets, brushing demon teddy bears until they drop their fluff, cutting off capes, stealing precious artifacts, and so much more. Every chapter features a new quest, and the hilarious situations that come with it.

Did I mention she keeps dying? Yes, in her quest for new stuff to sleep better she keeps falling into lava, or falls asleep on deadly mushrooms.

The girl is totally awesome, and I actually don't want her to be saved. She is just too fabulous and kick-ass. She totally isn't afraid of the monsters.

In the meantime we see the humans still trying to save the princess, and the demons making plans to thwart the humans. :P

If anything, I agree with a comment I saw somewhere, that someone should save the demons, and the demon king. Before they get killed any further.

The art is pretty awesome, I do love the style!

This manga is perfect if you want to laugh your butt off, and if you want to know what the next thing is that the princess will do.

I looove the art. Every chapter is independent and quite small, which I always prefer. Our main character is acting like a toddler and it is very funny.
This is more like a 4,5 star to me since it is light and easy to read, but not something I would think after I finish reading.

Hilarious

Absolutely hilarious RPG deconstruction from the perspective of a "captured" princess. I loved it and can't wait to read more.

Hilarious and could have easily been a whole series so it took me a while to read. I enjoyed the antics of our reckless princess, trying to get the best night’s sleep of her life. But I did feel like, the lack of resistance from the demons and her being easily revived and many other things going too easily, did result in a less exciting read than it could have been. But totally worth the read! I laughed a lot reading this one and it’s a very full and detailed story and illustrations. Very quirky and cute at times, too!

I must be missing something... It seems like a repeated variation of the same not-that-funny story? The princess can't sleep so she mutilates some supernatural creature to get material for some ridiculously elaborate pillow/bed/blanket.

The artwork was cute and the first two-three chapters were amusing, but the premise and humor got old pretty fast. I understand that manga is super repetitive, especially comedy/slife of life series, but unlike others the repetition here made it LESS humorous. Also, Princess Syalis has little to no to personality other than being sadistic. The demons were pretty entertaining, so that was a plus, and I did love the JRPG style of storytelling and worldbuilding. Unfortunately, it's not enough to make up for the rest of the problems I had.

Not a bad series and I'm sure most people will find it more entertaining than I did, but this isn't for me.

Why was this stressful to read like she just cannot get a good night's sleep, poor thing...

between the monsters snoring, the pillow being of poor quality, and the spell books not working either to put her to sleep... at least she now has magical powers but she really just wants to sleep, also love the new crown, looks much more comfy, and bangs are annoying....

There is a lot to love in this manga. The art, the characters, and especially the tone. A manga like this can't be terribly easy to write - you're taking the 'damsel in distress' trope and not only subverting it, but doing so in the most spectacularly comedic way that takes the mickey out of what is a normally very serious storytelling device.

The story is simple: Princess Syalis has been captured by the titular Demon King. He's using her the way most captured princesses are used in these types of tales: as bait for a hero. Except, very quickly, we realize not only is she hardly a prisoner, but that, in most ways, the castle she finds herself in is a reprieve from her daily drudgery as a princess. Not only can she finally get some rest (something we can all empathize with in a deep, primordial way), but she no longer has to worry about carrying out the duties of a princess. She can dedicate herself to her one, true passion: sleeping.

What manga-ka Kagiji Kumanomata does so well is showcasing how the princess is anything but a damsel-in-distress and, in fact, she could quite easily waltz out of the castle whenever she likes thankyouverymuch. Except why would she leave when she can finally get the perfect shut-eye using all sorts of magically enhanced objects?

The princess aside, one thing I really enjoyed in Sleepy Princess in the Demon Castle, Vol. 1 is how desperately the Demon King's is trying to be a classic villain. He's trope-savvy and he knows exactly how stories like this should play out...except no matter what he does, no matter what his plans, or what he expects of the princess to do, nothing works out. He is, like a lot of his minions, a rather sympathetic character who is just trying to be the best Demon King he can be goshdarnit!

It's just this kind of manga that keeps me coming back for yet more manga. It's fun, lighthearted, and cute. The perfect manga for the start of the winter season.

A princess who has been captured by the demon king just wants to have a good night's sleep

This is a cute and funny book. While you think the stories would be about the demons torturing the princess, she actually ends up 'torturing' them by escaping her cell and destroying artifacts in her drive for the best bed, best sheets, etc.

My favorite part was when she realized that she could brush the teddy demons to get high quality stuffing for her pillow. And then the teddy demons follow her around asking for "More! Brush us more!". If you read that and think 'adorable', you should read this book. If instead you roll your eyes, skip it.

I'm not sure how well this idea will cover several volumes, but I'll give the second one a try.

This was fun!

I definitely prefer the anime because of how vibrant it is, but I really enjoyed all the character profiles in this one and seeing how faithful the anime adaptation was! Makes me feel good about sticking with the anime because even though I enjoyed this, I love hearing the characters come to life with voices and such.

Also just have to say that the Demon Cleric and the Demon King are my favorite characters! I don't know why but outside of our Princess's actions, they make me laugh the most!

Had a fun time reading this one!

Fairly light and very silly. Pokes fun at the very concept of a "demon king" and heroes and such in a very unique way.

...Also, as someone who struggles to sleep restfully........gosh, I can understand a LOT of what the princess does. I get you, girl! X'D

TL;DR, I'm not falling all over myself to read more, but it's funny and I might pick up the next one from the library sometime when I need a laugh.

So this is a silly manga that manages to keep the central gag (the princess needs something to sleep) funny throughout the volume. It's mostly loving jabs at video game tropes, and the occasional fantasy novel gag.

Essentially a one joke manga: the captured princess cares way more about getting a good sleep than escaping from the demons. This sort of thing always wears out its welcome eventually, but I did like this initial volume more than I've liked other, similar books. For one, it's very creative, with a huge range of fantasy characters. The princess may be obsessed with sleep, but she's also very clever and determined. While the premise, that she only cares about sleeping, is inherently dumb, the characters aren't, and that keeps this from floundering after a chapter or two. Ultimately, it's still a single joke stretched out over thirteen chapters, but it at least does it in a fairly smart way.

I adore this book. It is ridiculous and I NEEDED that. The Princess is a MOOD. I honestly can't remember the last time reading a manga had me laughing so much. I have read up to book 10. I recommend this book for all ages though there are some jokes that may fly over the heads of younger audiences :P . It pokes fun at over used tropes and does not take itself too seriously.

The art is very consistent throughout the books. Personally I love the art choices, its part of the humor.

11 out of 10. A great read!

I started watching the anime because of a tiktok, only to find out my library has the manga series available on Libby, so I got right on that. This is such a wacky and ridiculous story and I can't get enough of it!

If you’ve played hundreds of video games, you’ve probably played the generic one: princess gets captured by bad guys, and the hero must rise to save her. So for this particular manga, the princess has been captured by the demon king, and the hero and his comrades embark on a harrowing journey to rescue her.

Meanwhile, the princess embarks on a harrowing journey to build herself a bed in a demon castle.

Sleepy Princess in the Demon Castle combines video game tropes, RPG-like qualities, and HGTV shows to present you this manga. A manga where Princess Aurora Syalis Goodereste is bored at the demon castle. With no attendants or things to do except stay in her cell, she escapes multiple times and builds tools to help her sleep better. Like a pillow. Bedsheets. Or famously pulling a shiny, demon slaying, hero wielding sword out of a slab in the middle of the forest for…

Sunlight. Yes, sunlight.

Anyways, rather than seek any way to get out of the castle, she does whatever she can to sleep better. For a young girl like her, sleep is good.

…But about escaping the castle…?

Honestly, the only problem with this manga so far is can this level of quality continue? With it firmly set in not taking it seriously and being a comedy with such a simple plot, it can easily fall into a work that gets repetitive over time. Like does this girl even want to leave the demon castle (spoilerNO)? Reunite with the hero (alsoNO)? If not, then it’s got to be super fresh and creative with how everything’s depicted. And I assume, by faulty logic, there will be a volume that will falter humor-wise.

…That’s about it for my criticism of Sleepy Princess in the Demon Castle!

Needless to say, the humor is astounding. You know the logic regarding damsels-in-distress? Well, it blows that all up by focusing on the Princess. Telling the hero’s journey in a meager 4 pages. (Maybe a little more, but maybe a little less). Instead, it focuses on the many demons of the large castle, which range from absolutely harmless to irresponsibly incompetent. Rather than actually be a frightening situation for Syalis, she’s essentially a kid at the candy store with pockets knee-deep in cash. Also she’s the one who eats demons for breakfast. (This actually is not a joke.)

Some good examples, of course, take place in the very first chapter. She hates her pillow, which is nowhere near good quality. So she resolves to make herself one. How do you make yourself one like hers? By tricking teddy bear demons of course (just brush their skin after almost stabbing them with a knife and they’ll follow you forever), roam around the hallowed defenses of the place and pick things out of demons, then put it all together, and voila! A soft pillow that instantly makes you go to sleep!

Other examples are far more subtle. If you’ve played any of the Legend of Zelda games, you might catch a joke. Any RPGs (Dragon Quest, Pokemon) you’ll understand immediately. It admittedly didn’t come to me that this manga would reference video games a lot. And in fairness, it also delves into role-playing tropes as well. But in a scene that made me think back to the time in Wind Waker which involved using the wind, I can’t help but think this manga is somewhat of a callback to those times.

The characters make it stand out as well. Some stand out because they, in theory, should seem and act more powerful than the princess (the Demon King, Great Red Siberian) but don’t, while others are completely bizarre (the Michelin Man Tire Demon, “Toothpick Men”). But the princess is key to everything. There’s no other character I would expect to embrace death because its benefits (sleep) apparently outweigh, ya know, the most important thing (living) other than Syalis. That’s a testament to making her stand out, by supplying excellent dialogue. She’s a welcome delight.

And so’s this manga. Sleepy Princess in the Demon Castle is fantastic. I already explained one worry, but one more worry: this could be a work that might stump those who aren’t too much in the know regarding games. But I think overall, between the art and comedic timing, this is one manga you’ll want to start adding to your shelf quickly. Definitely one of the best manga debuts of 2018.
