'NEW YEAR'S KISS' BY LEE MATTHEWS IS A FUN UPBEAT ROMANCE ABOUT A GRIL WHO HAS A NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTION TO MAKE THE COMING YEAR EPIC IN EVERY WAY - AND IS WILLING TO PUT HERSELF OUT THERE FOR LOVE.
Tess and her opinionated older sister Lauren are spending the week after Christmas at the snowy Evergreen Lodge in Vermont and they aren’t happy about it. Their stern grandmother, who owns the holiday resort, is not known for her warmth and good humor. But when shy, straight-laced Tess meets Christopher in the lobby, things are suddenly looking up.
And when she decides to get out of her comfort zone and create a bucket list of things to accomplish before the New Year-like singing in public and skiing a black-diamond slope-Christopher is happy to help, even as he keeps a secret that could turn everything upside down. When the ball drops, will Tess and Christopher share a magical kiss-or will Tess start the new year off alone?
When I first started this novel I was in love. It pulled me in immediately, I loved the feeling it gave me while I was devouring the pages, and I honestly though I was on a way to discover new Anna and the French Kiss.
However, as the story progressed, it took a different turn and if I'm completely honest, it bored me for one with it's predictability, and second, with selfishness of the main character who's only focus was on her love interest.
Yes, her sister was the good one either, but that was explained from the very beginning, that they were not close and were mean to each other.
I mean, this was okay story, but I didn't like how romance took all the focus and bigger problems were hidden under the carpet, instead of explored. I mean, how can one character have a break down and the next day everything is back to normal without even a talk? Don't want to put spoilers here, but this is an example how some situations were there just so our main character could build her story from them, without ever looking at side characters or solutions to problems that were maid.
I'm not going to say anything more. Still, I am glad I read this ya novel.
Reading a holiday book in mid-July? Whatever, time isn’t real. I didn’t hate this at all, but it was very similar to many other YA books I’ve read. You got the main character Tess, her mean older sibling, and the generic love interest. With the plot being that the love interest is trying to help Tess come out of her shell by writing a check-list of bold new things she could try. And honestly, this plot device just made it seem like the book itself was going down a check-list of YA book tropes. There’s the love-triangle, there’s the break-up chapter, and finally there’s the make-up scene.
This is unfair to the book, but I guess I thought that it would be a little like the movie “Before Sunrise,” where two people randomly meet on their respective botched vacations and, you know, have a chat. Instead, this is more like “Yes Man,” which is fine, but I am a little disappointed, I guess. Tess and the dude needed to spend more time together is what I’m saying. I couldn’t exactly say this is a great “vacation read,” because… well, I wouldn’t read it on a vacation. I would probably read it on the plane to the vacation though. Ringing endorsement, I know.
Also, when Tess talks about wanting to try sushi, the love interest goes on for a couple paragraphs about how disgusting it is. Weirdo behavior if you ask me.
This is a super cheesy YA romance. I am sure people will find aspects to enjoy. I could see it going well with NZ Year 9 students looking for a formulaic and safe romance. The characters weren't unlikeable, they were just very forgettable. Just not for me.
I really enjoyed this book! It gave me Jen Calonita and 10 Blind Dates vibes and I was all for it.
I wasn't really sure what the purpose of the book or the end goal was going to be when I first started the book, but I quickly found out our main character, Tess, wanted to accomplish a bucket list. This bucket list contained a list of things she had always been too scared or too shy to do, but wanted to accomplish before the start of the new year. Almost like a reverse new year's resolutions list. I loved this premise especially because it brought me, the reader, on some fun adventures with the characters.
At first, I wasn't sure how to feel about most of the main and side characters, but they all grew on me pretty quickly. Tess was a nice main character. I loved that we got to see her grow and evolve throughout the book more into the person she wanted to be. It was fun to see her come out of her shell and try new things.
I also really liked getting to know Christopher. He was around in the first two-thirds of the book and then disappeared for nearly the whole last third of it. His disappearance was explained, and I guess it gave Tess a chance to see that she could accomplish her bucket list items on her own, but I still missed his presence. He was such a huge part of the book and then he just disappeared. I think that time was vital to the growth of the relationship between him and Tess, but that's alright. The ending didn't feel super forced, despite his disappearance, but I think it could have been more organic if he wouldn't have been gone for this chunk of the book.
Overall, this book was sweet, and fun and, and right up my alley! I love cute YA romances, especially ones that take place around the holidays (at a lodge-type resort at that!) so I was happy with this one. Definitely take the time to check this one out!
This was the perfect start to 2021, kicking off my year with a cute, fluffy romantic read set in snowy Vermont. I loved following Tess as she grew as a person, enjoyed just being a teenager and navigated her way around her first romance.
The setting was the best part, cosy ski lodges and snow covered ski slopes. It really helped the cosy atmosphere the book had, and we got to visit all of it while Tess was making steps to complete her bucket list. From karaoke to firing paper planes in swimming pools, this holiday retreat has it all.
I loved the easy dynamic between Tess, whose parents were going through a divorce, and Christopher, suffering from a broken leg after an incident on the ski slopes. They clicked immediately without it feeling forced, and I rooted for them all the way.
This is a shorter book at less than 250 pages, and perfectly paced. While the story was predictable, it was uplifting and compulsively readable, the time flew by while I was reading it. I could see this being a frequent winter holiday re-read for me!

Picked up this book at my local thrift shop without reading what it was about. The story was very cute and it reminded me of something I would watch at hallmark channel or Disney original movie from early 2000s. This is a clean, YA romance, perfect for all ages.

New Year’s Kiss was fun and uplifting New Year themed YA romance that revolved around Tess’ ten bucket list to accomplish before New Year. It was about getting out of comfort zone, trying new things, and enjoying life for yourself once in a while, family, friendship and love.
Writing was gripping, entertaining and fast paced. It was first person narrative from Tess’ perspective set in Tess’ family resort Evergreen Lodge, in Vermont . The resort, all the activities for guests in resort, skiing slopes, and the town around the lodge made the book atmospheric.
Romance was cute. I was surprised and at the same time enjoyed reading how Tess and Christopher became friends, started having feelings, managed to fight, derailed and made up in just four days. But never I felt it was too short time. Author filled this duration with flying paper plane, skiing a black diamond slope, meeting famous star, singing in public, lots of drama, fun, and entertainment.
Overall, New Year’s Kiss was sweet and entertaining holiday themed YA romance. If you want uplifting quick read, you should try this.
Didn’t finish this before the year’s end, but got some time to wrap it up on Mew Year’s Day. It took awhile for Tess’ character growth to happen — establishing her “before,” while necessary, made her kind of hard to read at the beginning. But she got better as she opened up. I don’t want to put this behind a spoiler tag, so I’ll just say there was some very thin reasoning behind one character’s actions towards the end. But overall, as my friend I buddy read with noted, it did put me in the holiday spirit. There are a lot of Christmas books, but not so many about New Years, so it was really nice to have a story focus on that time between Christmas and the end of the year.
it's getting a 4.5 from me because it was a really fun and quick read but there were also two little things that left a few questionmarks spinning in my head
I originally wanted to read this book when I first saw it, because I was looking for something fun and cute. When I read a few reviews, which likened this book to a Hallmark movie, I was all in. As a Hallmarkie, I can see some parallels, and I rather enjoyed spending the year end with Tess.
Her life was going through a LOT of changes, and as type-A person with a list and a plan for everything, let's just say, she was not embracing the changes. When she met Christopher, he encouraged her to push beyond her comfort zone. Together, the pen her "bucket list", ten things she wants to accomplish before the new year. There was nothing too outrageous on the list, but each helped her learn something about someone in her life or herself.
Overall, I got what I was looking for - a fun, cute, and sweet story. The ending earned a grin from me too, which was the marshmallow fluff on top.
The first two chapters most of the characters were constantly teasing and poking fun and being generally unfair towards Tess, the main heroine. It got annoying fast and so I dnf'd. 2.5 ⭐
well, this sure got annoying and frustrating as it went on
i definitely started out liking this with many elements of it coming across as charming. i liked how we were introduced to tess through naturally learning different traits and interests of hers. i LOVED the atmosphere and how the hotel was described. i liked the complexity of tess and lauren’s relationship and how it developed throughout the book. tess and christopher had good banter in their first few interactions. however, most of this was contained in the first half of the book. once the second half hit, i had many issues with it.
for starters, christopher’s parents totally had a right to sue and were justified in what they were asking to be done. the fact that they were made out to be villains when really they were just trying to get valid justice for something that the hotel would be genuinely liable for is the worst. it’s a YA book so they probably just wanted us to be like ‘parents/authority is the worst’ but it just came off as stupid. loretta bothered me at first. she could be kinda controlling and patronizing and there wasn’t enough charm to balance it out. thankfully she got better by the end. the fact that everyone said ‘heck’ and ‘freaking’ for most of this while having said ‘what the hell’, ‘bitch’, and ‘jackass’ at other points in the book annoyed me immensely. like sorry but no 16-19 year olds say ‘heck’. come on now. christopher didn’t really do anything wrong here, other than being annoyed at tess for skiing with damon who she didn’t even know was gonna be there. this would be wrong of him if damon was just some guy, but considering what he did, i think he was justified in feeling this way about his presence.
now. here are the big two. firstly, tess got SUPER annoying cause she became pretty self centred and wasn’t really considerate of christopher’s perspective on the situation. like at all. she didn’t believe him when he told her about how his injury happened and she blamed him for his parents’ lawsuit which he had no control over. she could be kinda hypocritical and sometimes acted like she was in the right when really she wasn’t. this bitch pissed me off so much at times. and secondly, the execution of how tess and christopher made up at the end makes me so mad. this was not a good way to do it. from what went down between them, it made perfect sense for him to actually not want to see her and for his avoidance of her to be due to his own choice. to get them back together, we could have had them talk out their problems and make up through genuine communication so they could move on and have the entire issue resolved healthily. BUT NO. that would be too mature. instead, we have to take all his agency away so it’s an easy happy ending. it seemed like a quick resolution by blaming his thoughts and actions on externalities so that no one is really at fault for anything and we can just have them kiss. he had understandable reason to think and feel the way he did and then all of a sudden he never thought any of it. them making up this late in the book would have been totally fine too, if it had been done well, but the way it was actually done was not it.
so yeah. i was excited cause i thought i was gonna really like this but then it totally disappointed and irritated me. it’s especially upsetting since the cover is so cute :/. and just like last year, i’m starting this year off with a 2 star read that includes a character that completely pissed me off in the second half LMAO
I am amazed at how much I could relate to the main character, Tess, in here! She is very much like me. I suppose that must sound weird being able to relate to a teenage girl but we both share some of the same characteristics: being nervous sometimes of speaking up (you know that internal thought of 'should I say something or not'), being uneasy of trying new things, preferring the safe old habits, trying to please others and being a rule follower. Even as an adult I still have those traits. So yes I found this very interesting to read!
Tess and her older sister are sent to stay with their grandmother at this resort. It's just after Christmas so the snow is on the ground and the skiing is on! Tess decides she wants to try ten new things before the New Year arrives and so she makes a list (with the help of a cute boy she meets). Some of her goals seem dangerous or impossible, like getting the autograph of a famous person or skiing a dangerous black diamond slope. Plus there are other developments too.
This story had enough surprises and things going on to keep me reading. It was fun and very entertaining too... There's family drama and lits of unexpected twists and some craziness too. Tess certainly is way braver than I am that is for sure.
But I must say the thing that attracted me to this book is the cover image. Look at that beautiful snowy scene! The snow looks so fluffy! And the pretty colors. All of those pretty shades of blue... But if you ask me it would look better without the couple smack dab in the middle. I do prefer just the pretty scenery around them...
I was hooked by this at the start. I really enjoy the bucket list trope, as well as characters coming out of their shell a little bit. I also really liked the festive vibes of the hotel, and I’m such a seasonal reader that I actually finished it on New Year’s Eve which matched the story, so I thought that was cool.
However, this ended up being only an average read for me. The romance happened pretty quickly (which I guess is to be expected since the book is less than 250 pages), the conflict was introduced and resolved quickly, and the whole thing basically remained at the surface level.
Still, it’s a perfect seasonal read and overall I enjoyed it.
i fricken did it!!! I read this book in two hours and finished it around 12:30 am.
This was really cute, and face paced. I love the main character and that she was aware that she was a people-pleaser because many characters like that are not self-conscious. Christopher was amazing and I loved to see their relationship develop.
TRIGGER WARNINGS: mild swearing ("d and p-word" once or twice)
This book is about Tess and her fascinating older sister Lauren, they get to spend the week after Christmas at the snowy Evergreen Lodge in Vermont frankly, I don't think either of them are happy about it. Tess, does everything she's told and let's say the older sister is the complete opposite. their strict grandmother has a whole bunch of stuff for them to do around the holiday resort, none of it seems very fun. It's all things her grandmother wants to do. Tess meets Christopher in the lobby in a chair near the fire, reading a book. things really go from there. them to start to talk and she gets out of her comfort zone. Both of them together create for her, a bucket list of things to accomplish before the New Year. some of them are quite fun and they do it in such a fun way. I quite enjoyed listening to this book. there were things, of course that were going to be annoying, overall it was very enjoyable.
⭐⭐⭐ I enjoyed this book overall. It's getting a four star from me because it was a basic romcom type book, but nothing more. I did not find it especially entertaining, but there was nothing notably bad about it.
There were a few times that I did not like the writing style, for instance, when any character started a sentence with 'like' just to make them sound more like a teenager.
I do like the growth of Tess' character though!
On the whole this book was okay, but not very remarkable.
Unfortunately, I didn't really enjoy New Year's Kiss. The story was a bit boring and I just didn't like the female main character Tess who felt a bit immature for her age.
Was this book cheezy? Yes. Was it still cute? Also yes. Tess and Christopher were SO ADORABLE. And even if Lauren and Loretta are a bit hard to get at the start, I loved them at the end.
The story was just a little cuddle of romance without extreme drama. It was smooth and I liked it.
This book is such a cute, easy read that is just a perfectly light distraction. So if your brain is overloaded I recommend just listening to the audio book while eating lots of snacks.
It took me awhile to read due to life but this was a short but cute and fun Christmas/new years love story. The characters were fun and relatable and easily relatable to the reader. If you want a romance holiday themed book that will pick you up and just put you in a warm and cozy type of feeling this is the perfect book!
