Sister Switch

Rate this book
A laugh-out-loud, modern take on the ever popular body-swap story from best-selling author Beth Garrod. Perfect for nine-and-up fans of Rachel Renée Russell's Dork Diaries and Alesha Dixon’s Star Switch .

Twelve-year-old Lily Mavers and her sister, Erin, do not get on. It doesn’t help that Lily has nothing in common with her overachieving, grade-A-student sister.

But after an emergency trip to the oddly named Hairy Godmother salon, Lily and Erin leave with much more than a new look - they’ve got a whole new life. Because the sisters have undergone a full-on body switch, and they're about to find out that life in each other's shoes is much harder than it looks!

I read this before xmas gifting it to an eleven year old niece who has two sisters.
'Freaky Friday' for teenage sisters.
It reminded me how horrible children and teenagers can be, hence the need for the swap, to teach the siblings empathy and respect, for each other, and for other people in their lives.
There were times when I felt the parents could have benefitted with the same lesson. Completely glosses over the subjects of bullying, and consent (with regards to posting photos on social media and whatsapp, specifically against the main character's pleading).
Also highlighted to me how the internet and social media can make life even more hell for a teenager.
I am so glad I'm not a teenager nowadays. I read the back of the book after finishing it. It says 'laugh out loud with this body swap story'. I didn't find it funny at all.

Sister switch was a stunning book with laugh out loud writing and incredible messages.

The character of Erin and Lily were incredibly realistic and so was their relationship! The struggles they faced made them well-rounded! The theme of understanding and sisterhood was beautiful. The subtle magical element was very intriguing!

The writing style was the best part! It had me engaged throughout and I really enjoyed how witty and hilarious it was! The ending was also very satisfactory. This was just a brilliant fluffy read that I would definitely recommend!

Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for the E-arc! All opinions are my own.

🦚 some of the events in this made me laugh out loud it was brilliant.

This is about two sisters called Lilly and Erin who are the complete opposites. lilly has nothing in common with her over achieving grade A student sister. Lilly is a walking disaster meaning everything that could go wrong usually does. when an emergency hair cut is needed they visit the Hairy Godmother. They get more than they bargained for when they experience a full body switch. They discover the others life isnt as easy as it seems and get into some very awkward situations. highly recomend this If you need to destress.

I think this book was rlly nice! it was amazing to see how the sisters slowly progressed as each other and honestly liked the plot swell. i also really enjoyed how the story didn’t just end the first time they found Agatha, instead it carried on which I’m glad cause i never wanted it to end!! It also shows how not everything which seems perfect is actually perfect.

Very good. Great story and even though I predicted how it was going to end, I didn't know how that was going to happen. It was very well written.

I’ve been a fan of Beth’s YA books since she debuted in 2016 (I CANNOT believe it has been that long though!!), and so I was thrilled when I was offered a copy of her middle grade debut, which follows two very different sisters when they swap bodies after a slightly magical haircut at the Hairy Godmother salon. Lily is such a fantastic narrator, like a little mini Bella from the Awkward series but with even more mortifying family members, and I just adored her. I did sympathise with Erin too, though, particularly as the book went on and the sisters began to understand what is was like to be each other. And Micha was such a lovely best friend character, I adored her! What problem can’t be solved with snacks? She’s a very sensible girl. I particularly enjoyed the opening scene, as well as the one where Erin accidentally sabotages Lily once they’ve swapped, but really it’s just a huge amount of fun the whole way through! And as you would expect from Beth, this is chock full of awkward situations and super funny moments, as well as characters you can really root for and get behind! I can’t wait to read whatever she writes next already, as well as finally getting to the one thing in her back catalogue I’m yet to pick up.

First off... look at this cover. It’s stunning! It’s impossible to not grab the book and give it a try. The story is a lot like you see in Freaky Friday but with two sisters instead of mother and daughter. I would have liked to see more of an aha moment with both girls. Maybe told from both girls pov would have benefited the story. I wanted to shake big sister Erin for her snotty attitude. But the story was fast paced and kept me engaged till the end. And I think a lot of siblings will recognize the struggle between Lily and her sister.
I chose to read this book and all opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased. Thanks to NetGalley and Simon and Schuster UK Children's!
