He is currently writing two series. Soho Noir is set in the West End of London between 1940 and 1970. The first book in the series, "The Black Mile", deals with the (real life but little known) serial killer who operated in the area during the Blitz. The John Milton series features a disgruntled special agent who aims to help people to make amends for the terrible things that he has done. Mark, as a child of the 80s, will freely admit that he watched a lot of The Equalizer in his youth.

Ah...Milton Is Back!! An intriguing story as he comes to the help of a boy in trouble, but soon realizes there is much more going on than people simply wanting to buy an old van! Worried about where he now stands with 'Group 15' due to a new person in charge and his last movements , a vendetta against a cartel whose hitman killed his friend, he worries that he was at the top of the 'Hit' list for Control...Again...
He speaks to an old member of the Group, Tanner, who he believes still has contacts to find out their interest in him. Only Tanner is forced to double cross Milton, worried what will happen to himself if he doesn't let Control know where Milton is. And THAT may be the end to Milton, who continues to follow his heart and works to keep the boy safe from what he now knows are money laundering criminals with a deep hold on the area. So now there are two dangerous groups after Milton, can he possibly make it with the boy, his family, and himself Alive..Or has his good conscience and heart, continuing to protect those in need, finally pushed him in too far...
An action-filled story with heart and goodness surrounded by evil and disdain..Milton must delve into his old self to try to stay ahead..But his conscience will Not let him leave innocents to evil..
A 5 STAR story you can Not put down, from the quick start to amazing finish! I received an ARC from the author and offer You my honest thoughts and feelings in this review.

Killa City was a VERY highly book that I thought was just okay. It was well-plotted and paced and was populated with interesting characters.

Dawson knows a great deal about the world of international espionage and assassination but not as much about US gangsters. Some of the misinformation in the book was slightly comical and pretty cliche.

Lots of reviews on this one so no sense in me going further as I am by some margin in the minority.

I was fortunate enough to be able to read an ARC of Killa City.

After Milton’s adventures in Columbia he finds himself in Kansas City (Killa City as it’s known to the locals.) He’s looking for a former associate from his days with Group 15, Tanner.

Milton quickly gets involved with helping a young man who has just bought a van at auction. Unbeknownst to the teen the van contains $5 million in mob money hidden inside. And the mob wants it back.

As with the other novels in the Milton series, there is no lack of action. This story deals with the personalities of the characters more than earlier books. Keeps things interesting and moving right along.

Seventeen books into the Milton series and Dawson’s stories still keep my attention, something not too many of today’s thriller authors are able to do.

John Milton books are so exciting. This time he helped an Autistic boy and his mother, who were being sought by the mob. Needless to say, Milton took care of all of them.

No romance and the F-bomb was used 47 times.

As for the narration: You can't beat David Thorpe. He's definitely John Milton.

Title: A Gripping Thriller Unveiling the Dark Underbelly - "Killa City" by Mark Dawson

Rating: ★★★★★

Mark Dawson's "Killa City" is a relentless rollercoaster of action, suspense, and moral ambiguity, featuring the enigmatic protagonist John Milton. As the ninth installment in the gripping John Milton series, Dawson takes readers on a tumultuous journey through the gritty underworld of Killa City.

Milton, a former government assassin turned repentant vigilante, finds himself entangled in a web of crime and corruption that goes deeper than he could have anticipated. Set against the backdrop of Killa City's ominous streets, Dawson crafts a narrative that is equal parts thrilling and thought-provoking.

One of the strengths of Dawson's writing is his ability to create vivid and atmospheric settings. The author paints a stark picture of Killa City, a place where danger lurks around every corner and trust is a rare commodity. The dark and gritty atmosphere adds depth to the narrative, making it a compelling backdrop for Milton's morally complex endeavors.

The character of John Milton continues to evolve in "Killa City," showcasing the internal struggle of a man haunted by his violent past. Dawson skillfully delves into Milton's psyche, exploring the demons that drive him to seek redemption through his unique form of justice. This depth adds layers to the story, elevating it beyond a mere action thriller.

The plot is fast-paced and riddled with twists and turns, keeping readers on the edge of their seats. Dawson weaves a complex tapestry of intrigue, introducing a cast of characters with their own motivations and secrets. The narrative seamlessly blends action with moments of introspection, creating a balanced and engaging reading experience.

While the action sequences are adrenaline-pumping and well-executed, the heart of the story lies in the moral dilemmas faced by Milton. "Killa City" prompts readers to question the blurred lines between right and wrong, justice and vengeance. The novel encourages contemplation on the consequences of one's actions, adding a layer of intellectual stimulation to the overall narrative.

However, some readers may find the plot's complexity overwhelming, especially for those unfamiliar with the previous entries in the John Milton series. While Dawson attempts to provide sufficient context, newcomers might feel a bit lost in the intricacies of Milton's world.

In conclusion, "Killa City" is a thrilling addition to the John Milton series, delivering a potent mix of action, suspense, and moral quandaries. Mark Dawson continues to prove his mastery of the thriller genre, providing readers with a captivating tale that transcends the typical boundaries of the genre. Fans of the series will undoubtedly appreciate the latest installment, while newcomers may want to start from the beginning to fully grasp the nuances of Milton's character and journey.

Long Time Coming But is it Over?

Milton needs to know if Control and Group 15 have opened or rather reopened a Red File on him. After all, he did interfere or rather totally obliterate their plans in Columbia. The Group provided muscle in the form of protection for a cartel leader while Milton had plans to stop the cartel leader after they caused him so much havoc in Law Vegas, (Read the Man Who Never Was). He goes to someone who can help tell him if he's still off Group 15's radar, Tanner, former adjutant to the last Control, Michael Pope. Tanner retired from Global Logistics and emigrated to Kansas City. His call to the Group would be flagged so Tanner turns in a Milton sighting in KC - Killa City. The new Control furious with Milton's interference in Columbia sends the new #1, Bjorn Thoronsson to take out his predecessor, the former #1, John Milton.
Milton's got his own problems in KC after he stops a pair of Irish mobsters from robbing a teenager of his $500 auction van. Now the KC Mafia is after the same kid for the same van. The boy reaches out to Milton who have him his number if he needed help again. Mob vs Irish money Launderers with one teenager in the spectrum and a $500 auction can in the middle. Just the odds Milton likes burned Thorrensen to the mix and there's going to be war. Milton, a teenager in the spectrum, his mother, a coach and a couple of bandages against all. Did I mention it was winter in Kansas City? A must read, Unforgettable Publication.

This is another strong outing for John Milton. Once again he finds himself getting caught up in a struggle to save some innocent people from trouble that they don't deserve and it plays out much as you might expect if you have read the other novels in this series.

Once again the strength of these books shows through here as the author creates really strong tertiary characters for John to help, sucking you into their struggle so that you are desperately hoping for John to succeed. The action is top-notch as always, and overall if you liked other books in this series, then it's a safe bet you will like this one as well.

If I had a criticism it is that this book felt a little episodic. One of the things that elevates this series from something like the Jack Reacher books is that there is a sense of this actually being a series, rather than just a collection of unconnected events that happen to have the same character. I enjoy seeing returning characters, seeing each adventure take a little more out of Milton and keep his character evolving and growing. While this book dealt with what is obviously going to be a major source of conflict going forward, it had that stand-alone feel that can undermine an otherwise solid story because ultimately if you skip it, you're not really missing anything in the larger series.

However, that's a small gripe in an otherwise well-crafted novel. At the end of the day, Mark Dawson is a safe bet as an author. I've never read a bad novel by the man and that remains true after reading Killa City.

Well, probably 3.5 but considering the speed at which I got through it I may have missed some details. So once again John Smith (though not for long) has that "need to help some stranger to make up for all my badness" itch and of course needs to scratch. One theme throughout the series is whomever he crosses whether an old buddy, someone who owes him a favor, or person in need of his help (whether they know/want it or not) their lives are about to be seriously F'd up, or shortened. Such is the case in this one, and it is a fun game to try to figure out from beginning who may not survive till the end of the book. Poor ol Jake the car dealer was first innocent bystander to get it, and with so many people gunning for Good Samaritan John it is surprising there weren't more. The kid Franny definitely deserved knee shot though something to shut him up would have sufficed, and Irish goon deserved worse for his transgressions. Seemed a lot when Bjorn from the old group showed up to join mafia and Irish goons in pursuit of John, and rigging house to shoot crossbows and blow up conveniently found dynamite were a bit of a stretch , but what the hell, it is an adventure novel. Seems AA meetings have taken back burner now that the old gang inexplicably wants him liquidated, will need to sort that out soon. Mark Dawson admits that he likes coming up with places and characters to stretch the limits and challenge his narrator David Thorpe, and David is up to the task. Next stop Bali , have fun with that accent!

This Milton story may be one of the most exciting of them all. There are a lot of players (mostly bad guys) who you have to keep track of and an incredible amount of action. In this story we can clearly see that Milton is a tortured soul. He wants with all his heart to make amends for his prior evil deeds, but constantly gets pulled into situations where he must call up the skills from his old life, bringing back the guilt. Maybe he should return to his 12-step meetings to see if he can obtain some peace. He doesn't seem to ever rest. This book involves three beautiful children who are best friends and incredibly talented. The children get caught up in vicious mob money laundering activity, murder, torture, crooked cops, and total mayhem, and instantly, their lives are totally out of control. Of course, in walks Milton who is innocently at a car auction ready to bid on a car. Of course he can instantly analyze a dangerous situation and calls up his old skills to save the innocent children. Of course, into the middle of this mix, the new Control from Group 15 has located Milton in Kansas City and sends her Number One to kill him. All of this is happening at the same time. This extremely talented author is able to weave all of these plots and participants into a wild story that builds to an amazing climax. Then, when you finish, maybe you are not finished. I’m definitely ready for the next book.

Kansas City, MO. KC- Killa City. Control is back up and running and Milton is concerned that they will be coming for him. His good deeds have gotten him, unintentionally, mixed up in a couple of their operations. He heads to KC to visit Tanner, a contact who may still have contacts within The Firm and could tell him the extent. This puts Tanner in a predicament, face the wrath of Control for not telling them where John is, or face John’s wrath for informing them. The extent is not good news for John. He happens upon Enzo, a teenager who just bought a van at a car auction, who is being accosted by two thugs. Naturally he has to intervene. Turns out that the thugs launder money for the mob and the van in question has $5 million of their money hidden in it. So now Milton has the mob and Control after him. The boy and his mom are it great danger as well. Not too surprising to find out there are crooked cops involved too. Enzo’s coach, Fernandez, has a sister who owns a place in the quarry outside of town where everyone will be safe while John deals with this. He is also ex-military. Surely one of these groups is going to be the end of John Milton. Or maybe not. Excellent addition to the series!

Killa City. Mark Dawson

John Milton is in Kansas City to look up and old friend he worked with. A British clandestine group known as the firm or group .They handled contracts untouchable by MI5 or MI6. Essentially eliminations. Milton didn't handle a contract satisfactorily because he wouldn't kill a small child who was a witness. He didn't resign or retire he just walked away, disappeared. This resulted in a contract for his elimination. He is in Kansas city to determine if the contract is still on. While there he helps an autistic teenager who has just purchased a used Ford van. The problem is the Italian mob has a lot of money stashed in the van and they want it back. The buyer and Milton are unaware initially what is hidden in the van. When Milton intervenes, the mob threatens him as well as the young man's family and friends. Threats do not intimidate milton. Now Milton, the teenager and his Mom or on the run from the mob and two crooked Kansas City detectives on the mob payroll. Also, Milton's old employer has sent an agent to eliminate him. Milton's plate is full. Nonstop action. Enjoyed immensely!!

And the Hits just keep on Coming!

Wow. Another great John Milton book by Mr. Dawson! The best compliment I can give this book and this series is to say I wish I was that guy who needed to find a new author in the genre of books I like and happened to stumble on Mr. Dawson’s works. That way, I would be able to start at the beginning of this awesome series and know that I had untold number of hours of great entertainment!

So if you are that guy (or gal) looking for a new author (think Clancy, Thor, Flynn and Greany) then you are in luck! You hit the reading jackpot. Go back and start with the first book and I promise you will be back to buy/read this Mx the latest book in the John Milton series, before you know it!

ENJOY! Great job Mr. Dawson.

**DISCLAIMER - I do not know the author, have never received anything for any of my reviews, and get nothing in return for this review other than the hope that you read this review and it leads to you enjoying all of the books in this series!

Everybody Wants To Kill John Milton

John’s compassion for the underdog gets him in trouble again. This time it’s a young man buying a cheap van at an auction. It seems the kid has stumbled upon a mess when the Irish Mafia sets out to get him. But they’re not the only ones, the Italian Mafia is after him, too, and it’s all because of that darned van. In an effort to help the kid, John gets himself entangled in a whole mess of crime, corruption and his old nemesis, Group 15. The action is non-stop, with John dodging the bad guys while trying to figure out why everyone wants that van.

This story is one of the best of the series, just trying to keep the characters apart is a challenge let alone solving the mystery. Whether you have read some or all of the series or are just a beginner to John Milton’s story you are going to like this book. And wait until you get to the end and find out what comes next. Whew!

Milton takes on the mob

Hard to believe its outing 17 for this great character and one where we see him stretch to stay on the straight and narrow as old foes and old weakness threaten to drag him back.
With the offer of an olive branch Milton seeks out an old colleague to ensure he remains a ghost from his former life.
Unfortunately his plan backfires and he once again is exposed as a target but not before clashing with the Mafia and a particularly nasty set of Irish hoods as he wades in to aid a kid from having his van stolen.
Action ensues as Milton juggles pressure from law enforcement and three different groups intent on putting him six feet under in order to get their hands on the vans illicit cargo.
Another well executed page turner from Mister Dawson who weaves multiple threads to a violent finale.

A terrific read from start to finish.

As usual, in this series, we find Milton attracting more trouble whilst trying to atone for the deaths he caused whilst being an assassin in his past life.

The storyline hits the ground running right from the start and continues apace throughout right to the end.

Dawson has to be my favourite thriller writer, he carefully constructs the plots with characters that embolden them. I'm pleased that The Firm is back on Milton's trail as those cold blooded killers really raise the stakes.

It'll be interesting what nom de guerre Dawson chooses for Milton in the next book as I'm so used to John Smith, hopefully it'll be a bit more original.

This is my favourite instalment so far as it promises so much in the forthcoming books. A series I do not tire of.

Highly recommended for all thriller lovers.

The sub-Reacher style novel was a disappointment even though I only paid 0.99p for the Kindle Deal. In my opinion it was over-written to the extent that I skim read large chunks of it that I felt really didn't add that much and slowed down the action. The blurb and reviews suggested it was unputdownable - it is putdownable - believe me - I only got through it as I'm on holiday and had lots of time to fill. The main protagonist, John Milton is just another loner travelling around with his back pack righting wrongs - now we've read that before haven't we? I felt the story was just full of cliche's the two bad cops, the Italian mafia guys, The IRA Irishmen. I finished the book and I thought the second half was much better than the first half which really didn't grasp my attention. So it's 3 stars from me and I will not be following this characters arc in the future either.

I listened to the audiobook version of this title read by David Thorpe.

It’s been a long time since I’ve listened to a John Milton story and had left the genre for diametrically opposed genres - so this has been a jolt back.

That being said, I found the beginning hard to follow and disjointed however, without having to rewind, I quickly found my feet and the story flew by!

There’s a new ‘Control’ and we get to meet up with No.1 again. I have a feeling that there’ll be a storyline involving him soon…

I’m going to ‘read’ back to back Milton books now and get back in the game.

David Thorpe IS Milton and when you hear his regular voice, you realise exactly how brilliant a narrator he is. There’s a conversation between him and Mark Dawson at the end which is both interesting and informative.

Good read

For fans of Jack Reacher in as much as the main character has believable skills and a conscience. This one also has him in some of the "flyover country" that folks traveling between coasts miss, and so having another British author drop his MC into it is quite interesting. This is anchored by KC, so there's some of that, and its culture and history nodded to, as well. This tale starts off small and grows to huge proportions and even brings in some of the tricks from MacGuyver into play. Or would that be Home Alone??? Or Swiss Family Robinson? Basically anyone left to defend themselves with home or farm equipment and a smattering of chemistry, physics, and all that good knowledge we didn't always know how to apply in useful situations in high school.
Highly recommend.

Milton and the Mob means another winner from Mark Dawson

Milton is back, still trying to keep under the radar, but someone needs his help and he cannot walk away despite being aware of his old employers' renewed interest in him. The bad guys and also the Group try to deal with him but both underestimate him, as is always the case. Milton gives as good as he gets in this action-packed tale, which I raced through in a couple of nights, but it is definitely the end of an era for John Smith and I can't wait to find out where Milton goes from here.
Mark Dawson shows no signs of running out of sticky situations to put John Milton in and for this, I am very grateful. Long may Milton's wanderings across the globe continue.

Killa City by Mark Dawson

It’s been a long time since I read a book that I couldn’t put down, but this was it.
Milton finds himself in Kansas City this time and at a car auction, he comes across a young teenager who has bought an old rusted van, blissfully unaware that it contains 5million dollars belonging to a Mafia boss – and so the story begins. Several times I caught myself holding my breath.
Another winner for Mark Dawson, he just gets better and better each time. He has the talent to draw the reader into the story and makes them feel part of it.
I can’t understand why a film/television producer hasn’t picked these stories up. John Milton beats Jack Reacher in to a cocked hat.
Very, very highly recommended.

I would like this if it was more Milton centered verses so much Mafia and their background. It seems to me that’s off point. When it got back on point my enjoyment went up. I thought when Milton walked into the trap the police pursuit was more like he killed a cop when he didn’t even fire a weapon. The entire K.C. Police after him, come on, he hadn’t even committed a crime, wouldn’t a police department like to be that cohesive? I know it’s a novel, but reality helps believability. Dawson has Tanner telling Bjorg where Milton is yet he doesn’t know in the story, OOPS. It was a very interesting story right through to the ending. Overall I think Dawson did well. 4.8

Milton Continues

I couldn’t wait for this book to be published. I really enjoy these stories and their character John Milton. Following the trends of the previous books Milton finds himself rescuing people who need him. He continues to try to make amends for his previous life and encounters one person after another who needs a particular set of skills that he possesses. Perhaps one of the best things about this book is it leaves open the possibility of more stories with John Milton to continue. There is a new Control, and now John Milton‘s life is back in the game. If you like the other ones you’ll love this book.

Never a dull moment with a John Milton story.

Mr. Dawson's stories get better with each one, and this is no exception. I listen to the audiobooks while working out and it makes the time fly!

I very much enjoy how Milton is in tune with himself as he ages...things aren't quite as sharp, but his intensity, ingenuity, and insane desire to "make up" for the things he's done makes for a great story. I also liked the fact that Control and the Group are on his trail again. This made for a great twist in this story and those to come.

If you enjoy a fast-paced thriller with great characters, give Dawson's John Milton series a try.

New author for me and and excellent read.

new to this series but found it captivating. I found i didn't need to have read the other books to listen to this. good realistic characters and plot development
kept me engaged throughout!
the narrator really brings the characters to life :)

Good characters and character development realistic and believable. Same with the plot line. Typical James Bond type story, secret organisation fighting the bad guys, with this agent’s conscience getting the better of home and not wanting to do some of the more questionable stuff he’d been asked to do. But now going it alone and still doing the same but in the name of defending the weak….

Another awesome book by Mark Dawson. This is my new "Milton" favourite. This fast pace tale shows the growth of this character. Milton head to the states to find a former associate, he needs information " is Group 15 hunting him" . Once again, Milton finds himself helping an young man and in the process gets himself in trouble with the mafia. As always the plot was great and the pace was fast, with lots of suspense. I managed to read it in a few days during a very hectic week. I did not want to put it down. Looking forward to the next one.

John Smith Is Dead?

Mark has done it again.

As usual, Mr. Smith finds himself in a precarious position but manages to “manage” it. This is a great read and a continuing saga of his transformation.

The piece was hectic. For some reason, the bad guys just won’t learn. I can’t wait for the next one. Hope springs eternal that John Milton will find a significant other with whom he can find long-lasting happiness.

I strongly recommend this entire series to anyone who’s on the fence about starting it.
