So . . . I might have mentioned to you that my sisters and I launched OUR VERY OWN E-ZINE?
Well, Issue 2 is finally out in the world and I couldn't be more excited!
T Spec Fiction is a quarterly e-zine dedicated to creating clean speculative fiction for YA and MG readers (though adults and most middle graders would enjoy it, too!) You can find out more at our new website T SPEC FICTION.
Note: This e-zine is also the launch of my new pen name, Al Thibeaux, so if you are wondering who that is on the website, that's me. My older sister is Tor and my twin is Jaq.
MY REVIEWS:
Runner’s Alliance: This is one of my stories, so I might be a tad prejudiced, but I really enjoyed writing this setting and I’m a sucker for twist endings.
Adventure For Two: I am pretty attached to this one. When I finished writing this story, I found myself wanting to go on adventure with the main characters of my own yarn. This is a tribute to the old-fashioned and charming little adventure stories we read as children that blend thoughtful narration with cute characters. Hope you enjoy!
The Aim High: Get ready to chew your nails for this one – my sister hit it out of the ball park with this creepy and suspenseful tale. When a sassy crew tries to salvage a ghost ship – WEIRD THINGS HAPPEN. I love this atmospheric tale and the little glimpses we get of this quirky trio.
Star Harvest: Harvest. Time. In. Space. HARVESTING STARS. Do I really need to say anything more? Oh, except to add that it’s a brother and sister story and I absolutely love it.
To A Better Time: Raise your hand if you like ARTHURIAN LEGENDS. I do, and I had a smashing good time writing this one. I really wanted to do something new with these tales and combine them in a unique way and I’m pretty pleased with the results, if I do say so myself. Think Rosemary Sutcliff . . . plus . . . time travel.
Night Raid On The Zone – Part 2: CRE AND HER ADORABLE ANIMALS ARE BACK IN ONE RIP-ROARING AND EXCITING CONCLUSIVE. I love this world my sister has created so much. Again, I have to say, until this moment I never thought I would want a pet lizard – BUT HERE WE ARE.
Trent and Featherstone Episode 2 – Hatching A Side Job: CORDELIA AND BLANCHE ARE ICONS, I’M TELLING YOU. COMPLETE ICONS. Every single episode of Trent and Featherstone just gets better and better. I am utterly enamored with this plucky pair and their mad adventures that have a tendency to involve chaos and get-rich-quick schemes. I think you’ll find the play-on of this title “Hatching A Side Job” a particularly diverting subject…. :)
Note: If you want to check out the official blurbs where a little more detail is shared about the stories within - just check out the Goodreads listing!
CONTENT GUIDE:This is an e-zine dedicated to clean fiction, so there is no sex, swearing, or gore. Adventure For Two falls easily under a G rating and I would rate the other stories in this e-zine PG for action, peril, and thematic elements (think monsters).
In conclusion, it is my deepest hope that you enjoy the next issue of T Spec Fiction. Thanks for reading!
The latest issue of T Spec Fiction does not disappoint!! The Thibeaux sisters continue to deliver adrenaline-packed adventures with a fresh, bracing note of moral responsibility.
"Runners' Alliance"--strongly reminiscent of The Mandalorian! I definitely enjoyed this one!
"Adventure for Two"--reminded me of a children's storybook come to life, cheerful pastel-colored illustrations and all. There's a strong theme of unlikely friendship pairs in all of these stories, and "Adventure for Two" is perhaps the clearest example.
"The Aim High"--without a doubt, MY FAVORITE adventure in this whole issue. The minute the story opened, the minute I was thrown into the setting of this eerie, silent ship whose passengers and crew have all disappeared--hoooooooooooooooo, boy. I am OBSESSED with "The Mary Celeste," and this was so strongly a call-back to the Mary Celeste mystery while still being entirely its own thing with its own sassy, spunky characters, there's no way I couldn't love it. And I did. A++++.
"Star Harvest"--delightful imagery (harvesting tiny blue stars for their energy??? yes please???) and an absolutely heartwarming brother-sister character arc. I Love.
"To A Better Time"--one of the most unique pieces I have ever read, and I do not bestow that description lightly. It's King Arthur, in Roman Britain, but it's also a full-on science fiction time travel aesthetic with electric gadgets 'n stuff. Just, read it. You won't be disappointed.
"Raid On the Zone: Part Two"--A most satisfactory conclusion to Cre's adventure with her talking animal pals! *hugs them all*
"The Trent-Featherstone Journals, Episode Two"--CORDELIA IS MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE, also, I will never look at eggs the same way again. *shudders slightly* I've said it before and I'll say it again: Cordelia and Blanche's exploits thoroughly deserve their own TV show. Victorian ladies in space!!! Tell me how you could possibly top that!!! I nominate Haley Atwell as Blanche and Anna Maxwell-Martin as Cordelia.
I love how clean and appropriate T Spec Fiction always is; I let my baby sister read along with me with zero qualms. Truly, there's something here to entertain everyone in your family.
While I've enjoyed all three issues of T Spec Fiction so far, I have to say my two favorite stories overall are here in Issue 2. "Aim High"—is it just me or are there strong Wreck of the Mary Deare vibes about this one? The Mary Deare with an action sci-fi twist, tight and suspenseful with a streak of wry humor. And then "To a Better Time"—an Arthurian retelling that is beautiful and yet so difficult to briefly sum up in a review that I can only encourage you to read it.
