Steve Smallman on Steve Smallman:

I started working as an illustrator when I was in my final year at Art College and now, over 28 years later I still haven't got a proper job! I've illustrated literally hundreds of books, predominantly in educational publishing. A few years ago I was main illustrator for Longman's 'Story Street' reading scheme, illustrating 79 titles and writing 5.

I've worked in children's television, specifically in character development and most notably in the 'Raggy Doll' series in the mid to late 1980's. I have also done a certain amount of licensed work, illustrating characters such as Postman Pat, Bill and Ben and Sesame Street.

I've been described as an 'Animal Artist', not I hasten to add because I'm wild and hairy but because I love to draw animals and especially like to give them human characteristics.

I've been writing children's books for about 6 years and have already had several picture books published with more in development.

I've got 4 great children and although they're all adults now, my memories of them growing up inspire and inform my writing.

Korktuğumuz şeylerin aslında o kadar da korkunç olmadığını ve cesur davranarak farklı şeylerin üstesinden gelebileceğimizi tatlı çizimlerle anlatan harika bir kitap🧡

Little Bob has heard all the frightening stories about a creature called Big Hairy that lives in the woods near his home. Since he considers himself to be quite brave, he decides to arm himself with a sharp carrot and find the beast. As it turns out, the frightening monster is a bear who is actually more frightened of Little Bob and the world around them than the bunny is. The two spend some time hanging out, and the bear ends up channeling his inner warrior to save his friend from danger when a fox threatens him. Complemented with soft colors on the background of the pages, this story offers reassurance for those youngsters who fear the unknown or who haven't learned to stand up for themselves or for others. I had to shake my head at Little Bob's courage and his certainty that his carrot would provide all the protection he needed from whatever might threaten him.

A sweet story of friendship and acceptance.

Little Bob (a rabbit) hears his Mom read a bedtime story about a scary monster in the woods called the Big Hairy. That night he cannot go to sleep until he sees this Big Hairy. When he escapes the clutches of an owl, Little Bob stumbles upon a shy big bear that he names Big Bob. The two become fast friends, playing together until Big Bob rambles off to find something to eat. At that time, a fox spies Little Bob and is about to pounce, when the Big Hairy rumbles out of the shrubbery and scares him away. Little and Big Bob realize that the Big Hairy is Big Bob's anger coming out. The two share a carrot and call it night.

Smallman, more well known for his illustrations, weaves a very satisfying, yet predictable story of overcoming fears and new friendships. Caroline Pedler's illustrations are quite exquisite in their furry detail. Though Little Bob looks like a stuffed bunny with a backpack and the bear walks upright like a human, the fox is realistically depicted. Both landscaping and detail of the close-ups of animal furs are something to behold and to pour over - so realistic you want to pet them!

Fun as a bedtime story, this will also be good to use when talking about friends and overcoming fears.

Recommended for PreSchool-grade 1.

Scaredy Bear by Steve Smallman, illustrated by Caroline Pedler. PICTURE BOOK. Tiger Tales, 2018. $17. 9781680101003

BUYING ADVISORY: Pre-K, EL (K-3) - ADVISABLE

AUDIENCE APPEAL: HIGH

Little Bob, a rabbit, has snuck out in the dark woods to find the Big Hairy monster that his mother told him is hiding in the woods. But, all that Little Bob finds is Bog Bob, a scaredy bear who would like to find a friend. Together the pair go on the hunt the Big Hairy.

A great book about conquering fears and also withholding judgement until you get to know someone. The two Bob’s a super cute together, too.

Friendship between a bunny and a bear at night. The bunny should not be out at night but is exploring looking for a scary hairy creature. He finds a bear who has no friends and they become friends. But they are on the look out for the "Big hairy" who is out there and scary. The bravery of little Bob the bunny is shown as he inspires his new friend to help him. A good friendship story and heartwarming ending.

A bunny is told that there is a big scary, hairy monster in the woods. So he slips out one night after bedtime and goes in seach of the monster. Little does he know that he may have found him.

I really like the message in this book...I believe it's a message of preconceived ideas, and going with your own heart.

A little rabbit goes into the woods to find the "BIG HAIRY," and ends up making friends with a bear (before discovering that the bear is, apparently, the "BIG HAIRY" that he's supposed to be afraid of). But they just keep being friends. Lovely kid-friendly pictures.

We really enjoyed the cute story and illustrations! The bear reminded us of a huge teddy bear we have from my childhood and the backpack on the rabbit was quite cute.
