When Hope Calls #2

Sustaining Faith

Rate this book
So much has been accomplished. Lillian Walsh has stepped out courageously beyond what she'd ever dreamed of being able to achieve. She and her newly rediscovered sister, Grace, have settled three children from England into new Canadian homes and are prepared to place two more just after the New Year, when it happens--another painful disruption.

A white lie the sisters used to protect some orphans has resulted in an official complaint and a letter revoking the sisters' permission to manage their little children's home. And unexpectedly, Walter, the young man who has won Lillian's heart, departs for a job in the oil industry without leaving any hope for their future, making her confused and lonely.

With more children on their way from England needing caring homes, Lillian and Grace must use every ounce of gumption to keep their mission alive. But when startling information about the past surfaces and a new arrival comes via suspicious circumstances, they'll have to decide what is worth fighting for and what is better left in God's hands.

New Teens- One Star
Early High School Teens- Two Stars
Older High School Teens- Three Stars
My personal Rating- Two Stars

To be completely honest, I do not care for any of the romance or hinted romance in this book or the prior book. There are too many men around these sisters and they struggle with almost jealousy at the other getting attention from a man—especially Lillian, who’s point of view was the majority of this book (and therefore effected my ratings).

What did I like, since I gave this book two stars? Well, I liked the non-romance parts, I mostly liked Ben (though, when he talked, I had to focus hard on what he was saying because of the written heavy accent), I liked the children, and I really appreciate the amount of faith content in this book. I appreciate the adoption and foster care message of this book, even though I don’t like most of the adults. There was also one scene that was incredibly hard for me to read that caused my heart to ache and lower my personal rating.

At this point, I’m not sure if I’ll attempt to read the third book whenever it releases. I hope that Lillian and Grace’s relationship will be better and that they’ll trust each other more.

This is the sequel to "Unyielding Hope," and if you're the fan of the Hallmark shows "When Hope Calls," you'll want to check these books out

This book picks up where the prior book ended, with Lillian and Grace continuing their work with the orphans, so it's best to read them in order. There is a bit of a romance angle, but it's not the key focus, which I appreciated. I liked the fact that the main story centered on the faith journey for each character.

The story immerses the reader in the early 1900s in Canada. Great attention was paid to the historical details. It's easy to engage with the characters and root them on. And it's heartwarming to see faith in action throughout the book.

Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy, but I wasn't required to leave a positive review.

A wonderful selection from Janette Oke. I truly enjoyed watching the story progress of sisters Lillian and Grace as they try to save as many orphaned children as they can take on, all while battling the crooked system that seems so against their orphanage. The true colors of these sisters comes flying high in this story, and I'm becoming more attached to these two strong ladies all the time. My favorite thing about any Oke book is that it is filled with Biblical truths. I'm excited for book #3 (looks like Lillian's father is about to return from Wales?! Oooh!).

I received a complimentary copy of this book but was not required to leave a review.

Sustaining Faith by Janette Oke and Laurel Oke Logan is the 2nd book in When Hope Calls series. I recommend reading Unyielding Hope before embarking on this new tale. Sustaining Faith picks up where Unyielding Hope left off. This is a heartwarming Christian novel. It is well-written with developed, realistic characters. Lillian and Grace are good women with big hearts. They have opened their home to children being brought over from England who have yet to find forever homes. They care about each child placed in their care. A wee lie, though, has gotten them into hot water. The authors captured the locale as well as the time period. I can tell they did their research for the series. The story moves along at a gentle pace with an alternating point-of-view. While I enjoyed reading Sustaining Faith, it does not have the same ease or pacing as Janette Oke’s earlier works (I have read every book that Janette Oke has written). I found it that it took me longer to get into the story because of the pacing and the amount of detail. The children are endearing. I felt bad for these kids being sent off on an unknown voyage and not knowing with whom they would end up nor where. There is romance in the story, but it is not the main event. I like the Christian elements woven into the story. It was not heavy handed or preachy. We know that God is in charge, and we must wait for Him to show us the way in His own timing. Sustaining Faith leaves us with a cliffhanger, and we must wait for the next installment to find out what happens next. If you are a fan of Hallmark’s When Calls the Heart, you will like Sustaining Faith. Sustaining Faith is a sweet story that will touch your heart.

Sustaining Faith picks up where Unyielding Hope ended with Lillian and Grace going to the Brayton House regarding possible charges surrounding two orphans. This is a continuation of caring for orphan children as well as the journey of a new group coming with possible placement at their home in Brookfield, Alberta Canada. The characters are likable and realistic with some only out for themselves instead of truly caring for the children who just arrived and being transported away from all they knew. There are new characters, events and so much more with each main character needing to find their own faith and do what was right. Ben and little Janie was favorite characters with his caring heart despite of his own past. Will truth be revealed in time or will another accusation against Lillian and Grace be made?

I’m glad our library has this book on their shelves. I’ll look forward to the next book as the epilogue is intriguing. This review was my own thoughts.

I'm getting more into this series about two Canadian sisters who run a home for orphans. This series was introduced on the "When Calls the Heart" TV series. Because the two sisters grew up as orphans (one adopted, the other in an orphanage), they have a heart for wounded, hurting children. In the previous book, they had started caring for a group of children, most of whom have found adoptive families, and a new group of orphans is arriving from Britain. Among them are two children who don't already have promised homes, and one surprising adult - the sailor who has helped care for the children on the voyage from England who wants to find his own family who emigrated years before - he has lost track of them and hopes to find them in Canada. He has rescued a young girl from being sent to the workhouse, smuggles her aboard, and helps her blend into the group of orphans being sent to Canada.

All does not go smoothly, and the sisters' faith is tested over and over, but they are learning to rely on God more and more through the challenges. I'm looking forward to the next installment of this great series.

I really wanted to like this but all the characters seemed to be the same, especially the sisters. It sort of seemed like I was an outsider looking in as opposed to being there with them if you know what I mean.

I’ve been enjoying these so far! They definitely have gripping plots as well as a few heavy subjects, all while being clean and wholesome. And heartwarming with a few love interests☺️

4.5/5: Would recommend! Looking forward to finishing the series with the third book.

This story talks about British Home Children that were sent to Canada with the promise of a better life. It worked out for some, but there were too many to keep track of and many were treated as free laborer’s not small, beautiful children. In the book series McAlister Family by Carrie Turansky and Susan Mason’s Canadian Crossings series. Both series deal with family members that had been taken away and sent to Canada. The families are trying to be re-united. This novel is quite different as the perspective is from the ones who are running the homes and trying to do their best to care for these wounded, frightened children. They are doing all they can to care for these young ones and then find them good homes.

This is book two in the series, but it reads as a standalone. It made me want to read book one and find out more about these caring sisters, Grace and Lillian Walsh. This is an enthralling story I could not put down. It would work well for your book club pick as it is rich in characterization and story. It’s one that you will want to add to your summer reading list. I found this story intriguing, heartwarming and fascinating.

Sustaining Faith is not only the title of this second book in the When Hope Calls series, it is the book's theme. Lillian Walsh is learning through having joined her sister in caring for orphans to place them and herself first and foremost in God's care. Thankfully God has given her friends and family to support her as these lessons do not come easily. In this book we also meet Ben Waldin, a sailor whose heart has gone out to Jane Henry, a young orphan whose aunt wants nothing more than to be relieved of her. Like Lillian once had to do, Ben has to choose between duplicity and protecting a child, the proverbial rock and the hard place.

This joint effort between Janette Oke and her daughter, Laurel Oke Logan is a delight. I am grateful to have received a complimentary copy of Sustaining Faith from Bethany House via NetGalley without obligation. All opinions expressed here are my own.

I enjoyed the first one more. I didn’t like Lillian as a character all that much. She and Grace couldn’t communicate with each other to save their lives and she also came off as quite flat. Same with the romance. There seem to be guys swirling around these girls constantly and I didn’t find any of them to be likable.

I did, however, really like Ben (even though I had trouble understanding his dialect at times), especially his relationship with Jane. He was so sweet to her as well as Freddie. I liked all the orphans and felt for what they went through.

3*

This book seemed to slow down and really drag on. I feel like the daily ins and outs become a bit redundant after awhile. I was hoping it would be a little quicker paced to keep up with the mystery of the situation. The jealousy between the sisters didn’t add to the story in a positive way and felt a bit unresolved. I felt a bit irritated with Lillian and Grace. The kids and Miss Tilly are what make the novel.

Not bad, but oh so slow! The plot line inches along, w/ mundane conversations and various threads going in all directions. The sisters also have their share of little dramas. I'm no fan of cliffhanger endings. Sure another book is expected, but please just say who ran away.

Fans of Oke and Logan will be pleased to reunite with sisters Lillian and Grace in Sustaining Faith. This book is a direct sequel to Unyielding Hope (which far warning I somehow missed) and follows the two sisters as they settle into all the changes the past year has brought to their small family.

Now as I mentioned before, I haven't read book one in the When Hope Calls series. For people jumping into the series at this point it is totally doable. Logan and Oke present a wonderful tale with Lillian and Grace's story, however I did feel I missed some of the richness of the world, plot, and emotions that they laid out earlier. Essentially, if you can get your hands on book 1 first go ahead and enjoy it but if you can't I think you'll pick up just fine.

Oke and Logan really draw on their strengths with this novel. While the events of the book feel very ordinary, right down to waiting on phone calls with spotty connection, Oke and Logan shine with their emotion connection and their ability to pull out their characters hearts, hopes, and fears. Given the underlying themes of loss and starting over that run throughout the book, the authors had plenty of chances to dig deep and I was thrilled to see how often they let their characters sit with what was happening around them.

I've read a few novels in the past that touched on the stories of international orphans sent out to the frontier to find homes or work placements but I really appreciated the approach taken here. With Grace's own experience growing up in homes and Lillian's as someone who was adopted, Logan and Oke really give their characters the ability to explore the issues surrounding the developing care system from different angles.

I was pleased, remembering Oke gentler style from previous novels, to see the authors digging into the more painful emotions that can surround these placements and the grief that surrounds them. From Grace, to Jane, to Freddie the character reacted with an honesty in their portrayal that made my heart ache.

Now, one key point I forgot about an Oke and Logan series is don't expect an ending until the end and that also proves true. This novel very purposefully weaves itself into the story previous and the one (or ones) that are yet to come. In fact, warning to readers, this book does leave you on a cliff hanger on more than one plot line. Not in a lazy way but in one that leaves you checking the calendar for release dates.

4 out of 5 stars.

Isn’t it amazing that after so many decades of writing inspirational, faith-filled novels that have touched the hearts of readers too numerous to count, Janette Oke is still releasing stories that take you on a journey of hope and love?  Once again alongside her daughter Laurel Oke Logan, Janette gives us the sweet second story in the “When Hope Calls” trilogy, entitled “Sustaining Faith”.  Published by Bethany House Publishers and the companion story to the Hallmark television series of the name, this story is  even more compelling and heart-wrenching than the first book, “Unyielding Hope”.

I adored every page of Lillian’s story as she and her sister continue their work of providing a home for orphaned children - but it seems that every one of their well-laid plans are thwarted as one thing after another goes very wrong.  Faith in the face of hopeless circumstances is a strong theme in this story, and one that resonated with me deeply.  In addition to being told from Lillian’s point of view, this story comes together in a unique way as a couple of secondary characters also tell their stories.  I love how, later in the book, each of the separate stories mesh together and we see how God had been weaving the threads of his sovereign will into their lives all along.

If you, like me, have been a fan of Janette Oke almost since the time you could read, (I started out with her children’s animal stories!) you will be delighted to once again step into the memorable and inspiring world of one of her novels.  And although I have a long wait ahead of me, I am already looking forward to the conclusion of this sweet series that is set to release next year.  Thank you Janette and Laurel, for providing a lifetime of inspiration, encouragement, and hope to Christian readers around the world!

This is book two in the series "When Hope Calls" and I am impatiently waiting for book three to figure out what happens in the end.

Book two starts with a bit of a recap from book one. This is helpful if you haven't read book one or if it's been a while since you read it. I don't really recommend picking this up without reading the first book though because I think it will be hard to follow along and figure out what is going on.

Grace and Lillian, two sisters, are working to give a home to children who have none, but it is not an easy job. The book is full of umbrages, as they call them, that test their mettle and strength. It made the book a fast read, but it also seemed a bit unrealistic that that much could happen in such a short time.

It was interesting to see the changes in the sisters and the development in their characters as they get further along in their journey. Lillian seemed to finally come out and be able to stand up on her own two feet and Grace seemed to get a bit more fire under her, but also be just a bit pricklier and more sensitive and maybe even immature. I'm not quite sure how to describe her, but at the end of the book she seemed be edging toward the type of person she had warned Lillian against earlier in the book. I can't say more than that without giving out spoilers.

Ben is a new addition in this book and he is a likeable man. He is dependable and honest, hardworking and service-oriented. My biggest beef with him is his accent. He talks like someone with little to no education and yet he is well-read, so it doesn't quite make sense, plus I get tired of the struggle to read the accent. I can't imagine what it would be like to read it aloud.

All-in-all though I liked the book and I will be on the lookout for the next book in this series.

I received this book from Bethany House via NetGalley and was not required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are my own.

I didn't realize this was the second in the series until I started reading it but it I was able to figure out what had happened in the first book before I got very far into the book.

Lillian and Grace were separated when their parents died. Lillian was adopted but Grace was not. In the previous book, they had been reunited and now live together in Lillian's adopted father's home near Lethbridge, Alberta, where they take in British Home children. A white lie they told to try to save two young boys from going into an unsavory home has resulted in a complaint lodged against them and before they can be cleared to take any more children, they must prove themselves.

Ben has spent years onboard a ship travelling from port to port but when he returns home to England, he discovers his family has emigrated to Canada. He is determined to follow them and be reunited again but his sister left few clues as exactly where they might be going except for the word - Alberta. Before he leaves port, he sees a little girl named Jane, just like his sister who he's trying to find. She looks so lost and he learns her aunt doesn't want her and is trying to get her accepted as a Home Child. He decides to help.

It's an interesting story and I was drawn to it because I'm fascinated with the many Home Children who were sent to the US, Australia and Canada. Now, I will go back and read the first in this series.

Christian| General Fiction \(Adult\)| Historical Fiction

Bethany House and Netgalley provided me with a copy of Sustaining Faith for review:

A lot has been accomplished. Despite the odds, Lillian Walsh has achieved more than she ever dreamed of.  Currently, she and her newly rediscovered sister, Grace, have placed three English children into new Canadian homes, and they are preparing to place two more shortly after the New Year, if it happens at all--and again, it hurts.

An official complaint and a letter revoking the sisters' permission to manage their little children's home have resulted from a white lie the sisters told to protect some orphans. Lillian is confused and lonely when Walter, the man who has won her heart, leaves for a job in the oil industry without leaving any hope for their future.

In order to keep their mission alive, Lillian and Grace must use every ounce of gumption they have. When startling information about the past surfaces and a new arrival arrives under suspicious circumstances, they will have to decide what is worth fighting for and what should be left to God.

I give Sustaining Faith five out of five stars!

Sustaining Faith is a Christian historical fiction novel written by author(s) Janette Oke and Laurel Oke Logan.

Sustaining Faith is book two of the When Hope Calls series. I wish I had read book one before book two so I would have the background and better understand what I was reading.

Sustaining Faith is the story of Lillian Walsh and her sister Grace, who run a children’s home. It’s also the story of Ben and the orphans, especially Jane.

I read Sustaining Faith in a few days and would recommend it to friends, fans of historical fiction, and fans of Janette Oke.

I really enjoyed learning more about Lillian and Grace's journey opening their own home for orphans. I appreciated the reminder that God has a plan, even when we end up mucking things up by second guessing Him. When we trust and allow our hearts to align with His will, things go much better.
I liked the additional characters in this story. Ben, Janie, and even Freddie added even more depth to an already well-told saga.
The only frustrating thing about this book is that it ended on another cliffhangery moment. Well, at least I know that means there's more to come with the Bennett/Walsh sisters?
(note to future readers that you might want to wait until the entire series has been published before reading . . . unless you're the patient sort that won't mind waiting another year? or so before the next installment is published)

I don't always enjoy sequels as much as I do the original in a series, but I really enjoyed this one. Whenever I learn something new about history in a Historical Fiction book, I love it. In the first book, I learned about all of these orphaned children sent into Canada and the US-- while I had learned some of it before-- this one takes a look at the individual child's experience a little deeper by following the children from europe before being sent to the orphan trains. It also gave a glimpse into how something that started out as a wonderful mission and cause, was quickly exploited and became a business-- which breaks my heart.

Once again, I was encouraged by the characters in this book and reminded of the importance of setting aside self to love and serve others and our community.

Hoping for a #3 in this series!!

In this historical tale, Grace and Lillian are sisters who are running a placement home for children that are brought by ship from Europe for adoption in Canada. I had read some Janette Oke books thirty years or so ago and had stopped because I felt they were just simple cookie cutter stories. But obviously Janette Oke has perfected her craft over the years. This was a page turner. I have a feeling there will be another book with these characters later and if so, I am looking forward to reading it. The characters were interesting and the setting was rich in history and I felt the period was well researched.

I have voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book that I received from NetGalley. All views expressed are only my honest opinion

I read the first book and really enjoyed this second book. I think there might be a third book! This book left me hanging a bit at the end!

I love it that it’s a mother daughter team that are writing these books. I have read Janette Oke’s books over the years when she was writing back in the beginning! I love the TV show! There is a little crossover with this book series in the TV show!

It’s a leisurely paced book. Christian focused and there’s no swearing or anything graphic. I got drawn into the lives of the different orphans and the difficulties that the sisters faced at different times. How they solve their problems and help the orphans as well, turning to God for guidance. I like that this is a faith based book.
