In dangerous Fort Dallas, Rachel is untouchable. All she has to do is hand over her panties every day. Sure, it’s weird, but it keeps her safe, right? And if there’s a reason behind it, she doesn’t care.
Until she finds out that she’s dragon bait. That changes things.
To stay in the fort's sheltering walls, Rachel needs to "befriend" a dragon and establish a mental connection with him. Drakoni male Jurik may be protective of her, and caring. . .but he's still a dragon, and just as lost to the madness as any of them. He can't be trusted. No dragon can. Rachel wears the scars from the last time she tangled with one, so seducing one seems absurd.
Or. . .is it?
Because Jurik doesn't see her scars. . .all he sees is her. Is he her worst nightmare? Or everything she needed?
Ruby Dixon is an author of Science Fiction Romance. She likes fated mates, baby-filled epilogues, and cinnamon roll heroes. She also likes to write biographies of herself in the third person, because it feels more important that way.
Ruby also loves coffee and dirty books and will probably be a cat lady at some point. :)

The Hero:Jurik - Like all the other dragons that came through the rift, Jurik went crazy when he came to earth. The lights, colors, smells and sounds were too much for them and without a mate to anchor them they have lost their minds and can think of nothing but death and destruction. Jurik has settled into a lair he created in a deserted movie theater when one day Rachel appears.
The heroine(s):Rachel - she is living at Fort Dallas, which is ruled by the Solarian Azar. He has a weird program going where he protects, feeds and shelters women in exchange for a few oddities. The women have to give their underwear to his soldiers every day and then each of them go out of the fort with one soldier to guard them as they scavenge for items the fort can use.
The Story: Even while still in the “crazy” stage before Jurik meets Rachel, he is able to speak sometimes Luminora and Salavatre, the half human, half Drakoni babies of two of the Drakoni males from prior books. The babies alternately give him advice (like reminding him of his name) and complain that they are hungry. It was a brilliant add to the storyline.
Rachel is scared nearly to death the first time she comes across Jurik, despite the fact he made no move toward her. When the rift first happened, she was clawed across the face by a dragon and her right hand was trapped under granite and had to be amputated. I loved the fact that Jurik sees battle scars of a warrior when he looks at Rachel while most of the humans just see ugly scars, the cruel even calling her scarface and other derogatory terms.
In some of these books, the Hero’s seem a bit dumb because they don’t understand humans and how they differ from Drakoni women. I liked how in this one, Jurik details all the little things Rachel does that he doesn’t understand, and it makes him seem more intelligent.
This book introduces Melina who works in the clinic at Fort Dallas and she works closely with Azar, the Salorian. I can’t wait for their book!
I think this is one of the more interesting entries in the series, as we are following a character strongly impacted and maimed by the original destruction during the Rift opening up. She was attacked by a dragon and now she's going to be mated to one? Intrinsic conflict in the premise. On top of that, we get another look at what life is like in Fort Dallas, where women are constantly at risk of having to use sex work to feed themselves or being victims of SA. So... yeah, not a light fun one, but I thought the characters were genuinely interesting and both the micro and macro plot stuff really worked for me. It seems like we're getting closer to rounding out this series, and I will be interested to see where it goes!
literally the plot of most all Ruby Dixon books okay so I wasn't surprised. It was a good story but definitely leading up to the one that I REALLY WANT WHICH IS AZAR'S BOOK HI HELLO BIG NEED so it felt more of like a filler episode than a story fully in it's own right. But!! disabled heroine rep!! we like that.
A good addition to the series. Loved how the author always creates different heroines and make them brave. Makes me realize all the things I take for granted. Recommended and safe,
Another great book in this series and a fun read for Jurik and Rachel! This had some interesting things happening with the rift and just that whole plot coming into play again. I really enjoyed this couple, their relationship was more slowburn because neither understood how to claim/create the bond fully. So of course a little field trip to some of the other couples came to be. Jurik was super attentive and sweet to Rachel and just wanted to make his mate happy, he couldn’t understand why she wouldn’t accept water or other items he’d try and bring her. Rachel is also physically scarred on her face and missing a portion of her arm, the way Jurik loved her was just really sweet and washed away her worries. I like seeing how the babies are already making a difference to the drakoni and the calming sort of connection they have created amongst the group.
I think that I need to take a bit of a break from this series. Reading 8 of them in short succession isn't doing me any favours. While RD tries to make each couple in every book unique there are still so many similarities that they are starting to feel the same. It'll be a bit of a while before I jump into the next book.
This book does shed some more light on the Rift and leaves us with some more questions... the plot thickens!
Scrolling through KU it was a surprise to come across this new story in Dixon's Fireblood Dragon series. I do enjoy this series. The last one was pretty good and was about a female dragon shifter. Ruby went back to the male dragon in this story and it is Jurik who has been mentioned in previous books. With this series, it really should be read in order. It's a continuing story.
In this one, we go back to Fort Dallas where Azar, the Salorian (who will eventually get a book showing his story with Melina, the healer at the fort) who has started a program that basically is young women he sends out in hopes of mating with a dragon. While Azar has been the villain of this series, Dixon is gradually trying to improve his character and creating a new big bad. We'll have to see if she can redeem him for me. He's done some pretty shitty stuff. However, he has his reasons for setting up this sort of matchmaking service. LOL I won't give away the details.
Rachel is one of the young women. She was injured when the Drakoni first fell through the Rift. She lost her arm below the elbow and has scars on her face. However, she goes out scavenging one day and comes across Jurik, who of course, is her mate. He sees her as having battle scars and thinks she is beautiful.
Thus starts their journey. Again, there are communication issues until they officially mate but it didn't last too long and the story kept me interested. Jurik stays a little more sane because the young half Drakoni, half human babies born into this world can communicate with him and help keep him grounded. Jurik is actually pretty charming and quite a character once he can start to communicate with Rachel. I really liked him.
We get to see some people from previous books and Dixon does a good job of keeping the series going strong. She's had a miss or two for me in this series but it is one I am enjoying. It seems like she'll only have two more books in this series with the last one being Azar and Melina. Although, honestly, she could continue with more books in this series and I would be glad.
I don’t want to bitch about this but the cover is awful. Beside that it was neither a bad book or a great book. It was something in the middle and we finally got some new informations about the danger from the Rift.
Ten times better than the last installment of this story. There were a few niggling things that bothered me, but I think it did move us closer to the conclusion in a believable way. The next one really looks interesting! 3.5 stars
My least fav from this series. Biggest reason for the low rating is the insecure heroine. And the way she implied that she wasn't "worthy" of, or "pretty enough" for rape...?
There is no such thing.
Men will fuck dogs, theyll fuck pies. They fuck any holes. Rape has never been about beauty. I don't know what this author was trying to say here...
I really liked this one! A great addition to this series! I like how this one has a lot of time after the couple gets together. I love those kinds of stories!
So after the amazing ness of the last book being everything I never knew I needed, I won’t lie I was hesitant to read this. We’re back to another human woman taming her crazed dragon mate. I was also less enthused about being closer to Azar, he’s been such a thorn in this series that as much as I want and need his story I also dread it (because I know I’ll love it lol). Why I would doubt Ruby after all this is I do not know 😥 The story was absolutely brilliant and just the way this series is progressing as a whole couldn’t be any better. In a nutshell I truly love this author, how each story becomes so memorable I do not know. This book was a great continuation of the series and I loved seeing couples from older books coming together. Everyone thought the world ended when dragons came through the Rift but years later it seems something even worse may be lurking and seeking it’s own way in....
I really liked the heroine but the plot this time was.... Hmmm... Like we went all back to the beginning. Like Claudia's story when they didn't know anything about the dragons... And Azar?
I'm sure he has his reasons but I don't like that motherfu***er.
Good story. Some extra details revealed about Azar and the rift. No intimate scenes other than the Hero and heroine. Author gives a trigger warning for threats of rape and assault.
As I've noted in previous reviews, RD works hard to make each entry in this series unique. We've seen glimpses of the dragon madness, but here it is overwhelming. All of the previous women have been pretty but not gorgeous, here she is badly scarred from a prior dragon attack. Like I said, different.
The story is obliged to follow a certain sequence, but here again, it's modified to be interesting. The smexy bits are good, but don't dominate the story. The characters from the previous books appear near the end, but have little impact on the story.
In addition, the author has outlined a plot-arc for books 8-9-10. I'm intrigued.
This was ok. I liked that it gave a little more details on the Rift and brings another glimpse of life in Fort Dallas. Unfortunately the middle was still a bit boring and dragged a bit too much. I’d say it’s more for hardcore fans of Ms. Dixon and series completists only.
MAN, I like these Drakoni. They're a little whacked out from being dumped in our world, a lot dangerous when lost in their heads, and complete cuddle bugs once they find their special someone. Jurik is SO adorably cuddly. He just wants to stay as close to Rachel as he can get and she's both weirded out by it (because when all is said and done, the guy's still a predator) and comforted by it (because there's not much opportunity for sweet cuddling when the world's on fire around you). To be fair, the weirded out part really only comes into play before she gets to know him and accepts that he's totally into her and would never hurt her. After that, she's a-okay with it on every level.
Speaking of Rachel, she's the prickly sort of survivor you'd expect to find in the After. She guards her heart after being abandoned by her parents. She's pragmatic about her looks because of her scars. She's practical and hardy and she's willing to do most anything to keep on surviving. Putting the moves on a dragon, however, is sort of outside her comfort zone.
As for Jurik, he's one of the more sane unmated dragons we've met so far. That's mostly thanks to the human-Drakoni babies who are forcing him (and others) to stay in the here and now with their infant demands. Babies who can mind-speak and keep badass warriors focused are pretty awesome. When Rachel stumbles over him, Jurik finds a little more focus (although he does do the crazy thing occasionally, still).
We get a few more answers to the big question of how the humans and Drakoni are going to have to figure out how to co-exist on earth (there's a plan in the works, it's just...well, it's an interesting plan hatched by a guy who skates the line between good and bad). We also get a new complication that could have BIG ramifications for both the human survivors and the Drakoni alike. This is a crazy dangerous world and I'm loving it!
The Fireblood Dragon series was so incredible! It’s gritty, adventurous, full of survival, but also spicy and sweet. I think it was a great dystopian romance series! I give it overall ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️!
I really liked how these books intertwined with one another. Their plots overlap in a way that made it hard to put down the series. Plus there’s the overarching plot with the main villain. Speaking of the villain… his book is the final one… and his redemption arc is the best one I’ve ever read. I hated him throughout the books and then by the end of the series I was actually really surprised by him and his actions. (Proving once again how amazing of a writer Ruby is!)
Additionally, I loved how each couple was a little different. Each Drakoni was mindless and violent until they scented their mates. I loved how each woman embraced the power they had over their dragon. These women went from barely surviving and fearful of the world to having a dragon as not only a doting mate, but a fearsome protector. Each partner complimented one another. Through their love they were able to find freedom and happiness in a broken world. Everyone gets their HEA!
Also… does Drakoni sound familiar?! If you’ve read Ruby’s Icehome series… specifically Veronica’s Dragon… you might recognize some overlap. (I love that little Easter egg!)

I had one problem that actually had nothing to do with the book but a comment someone made about virginity in this book. Someone had commented and basically judged/shamed the heroine for being a virgin. All i want to say is that it’s OKAY to not be a virgin, completely YOUR CHOICE, this person left a negative review SIMPLY because of that.
Lady’s out there, do NOT let someone shame you or pressure you into doing something you’re not okay with because society or even someone’s comment said something different. The comment disgusted me and i just want to put this out there!
Okay so I’m all for this series, honestly. It’s a good wind-down kind of read for me, lowkey guilty pleasure and it still has a storyline that’s interesting. Unfortunately this story by itself wasn’t up to the same standard as the others for me; sure it had good scenes but overall I felt it was a bit backwards and paced oddly.
So we finally got to the main storyline of the series again, with the thing in the Rift, after two books of literally no mention of it at all, which I think is going to get really good from the next book onwards. (Bugs as big as cats? If that isn’t the stupid Rift bugs, I’m blue.)
I was right about the babies for the most part, they help the madness but didn’t think it was going to help with the thing in the Rift. I’m kinda eh about the fact that the babies have become the solution so now all the women have to go through having babies to save the world? And we still get no detail about birth, like are there complications at some point? (Yes I know the point of the fires is to make them strong enough to have half-drakoni children but still, there’s gotta be something??)
Rachel was an okay character. I get the author wanted to explore like for a person with a disability in the apocalypse but the number of times that it came up in certain parts was either too much (rendering it unnecessary to mention) or not mentioned much at all (therefore leaving me to question how things actually worked in the scene) I dunno I felt Rachel paled in comparison to the other main characters we’ve had so far. Visiting Dakh and Sasha was great but that whole scene served to say that she wasn’t ready and would be waiting (which Jurik was fine with) but then as soon as they’re alone, it’s pants off and wham-bam-thank-you-ma’am-mated-forever and she changed her tune?? I don’t know about you but it was a weird pace for me (and most of these other books have been pretty much the same in the sense that there’s a moment of complete shift; which wasn’t really believable in this one.)
I’m glad Jurik and Vaal got a reunion, though it was from a third person point of view (I don’t think we really got to see what they both remembered about each other but it was adorable to see that they remembered each other.) I was surprised that Gwen and Vaal are still living in Fort Dallas, and not in their own place and coming into Fort Dallas when needed, especially considering the baby now. Does Azar know that the babies are the key? Because to me the babies seem like they could be more leverage to hold over the other drakoni.
I can’t wait for Jenny’s book though; like, breaking a drakoni free of Azar inside a fort? Now that’s gonna be interesting!
Was kinda annoyed Azar wasn’t killed at this point. Like, I get that he’s the one controlling the drakoni around the fort now but the authors note at the start of this book said that an abuser would get what he deserved (which I know was Brady or whatever but ugh get Azar out of there, or at least give me a short book/explanation on how Melani (Malenj? I forget how to spell her name) is still with him? Honestly still not seeing it??
I don’t know when the next instalment of this series is out but I think I’m going to be glad to take a break from this series for now.

I am SOOOOOOOOO happy to be back in the land of apocalyptic dragon love! I love a good post-disaster world setting, and gah i wanna be out scavenging that ho like its nobodies business.
Rachel is one of the first h's i think I have ever personally read about who was literally maimed. Half of her face was ravaged by a dragon when the rift first opened, and up to her elbow on her right arm was amputated (same incident). She doesn't have time for peoples shizz, and uses their discomfort of her appearance to her advantage.
It honestly pulled on some serious heart strings, seeing how deep her pain really went. Not just the phantom limb pains, but her fear of being abandoned again. And her soulfull ache to be wanted by another. But her reality has taught her that girls that look like her dont get that. Shes tough, and won't be a victim ever again.
I swear this entire book I was thinking to myself, "why does Jurik sound familiar? Why do i feel like we've met him?"
And then I read the authors note and realized I AINT CRAZY, we have seen him before. Mind you, briefly, but still.
Jurik is mad just like EVERY other dragon, but when he smells Rachel, hes all MINE MINE MINE. But he's pretty...tame compared to the other Alpha-esque dragons. I mean, he literally lets her run back to Fort Dallas...but still throws food at em. Cause ever Dragon know, the way to a gals heart is through the meat section.
I wish we could have learned more about Jurik, or maybe gone a little bit more in depth into Rachel's life before the rift opened.
But I honestly cant complain, cause Im super pumped to see where this story is heading now. That ending certainly left me wanting more.
Cause just when you think the world couldn't get much more dangerous?
Side Note:
Can I just mention that one of the things I love about Ruby Dixon books are the variety of heroines we see coming round?
Im gonna quote the author message here: "I would rather try to represent varied aspects of heroines than make everyone absolutely pretty and perfect dolls. It's always my opinion that everyone can be a romance heroine, and I try to write that."
YES. YESSSS BABE.
I say it once, I say it 20,000 times.
Ruby Dixon is a gift to the romance reader community.
We are back at Fort Dallas, getting ready to wrap up the series. We follow our heroine and a group of girls that are part of the "Panty Project." Our heroine has an extra fear of dragons because when the Rift happened, she was attacked and left with a scared face and missing limb. The author mentioned how she is trying to be self aware and not use any ableist language. This is not own voices, but inspired by someone she knows personally.
Love our hero of course. He has a fun personality and likes to play and tease our heroine.
Really had fun with the project in the plot, how our couple meets, and the conflict. The incorporation of the babies and a fuller understanding of the Rift and the big bad and is really amping up each book leading to the finale.
Right now there are just two books planned left in the series. I would like to see maybe one or two more just to build up things a bit, but I still feel that the stepping stones here are doing the series justice.
This probably would have been a five star read, but I did the thing where I binge 75% of the book in one or two sittings, then take like a week break and finish the book. So, that is on me... idk why I do that but alas here we are. Still a favorite of the series!
Me pareció perfecto. Ojalá me topara más seguido con personajes así. En fin, hacia el final hay un pequeño desarrollo de la historia marco en donde nos muestran el creciente problema que deberán enfrentar los drakoni y los humanos. Me pareció bueno, peeeeero... ¿la solución? Ay, por favor. Jajajajaja.
I really enjoyed this series, but Fire in His Chaos was not a good book. There was too much emphasis on the possibility of rape, amputation, prostitution, and disfigurement.

To be honest it was a tad slow for me in the beginning. Having read the rest of the series I’m not fond of the other humans not knowing the drill of how Drakoni operate and thus reading what feels like redundant passages about mating and communication etc. To some extent I get it but that gets boring - just a note to author. That said...when they met with other mated pair and communicated it picked up significantly and the new really big threat that’s introduced is sheer brilliance and I cannot wait to see what she does with this new development and all the new babies because the possibilities have my mind going a mile a minute. For real, good stuff. Also I loved these characters! A lighthearted Drakoni and one absolutely fierce heroine!! Just so good.
