Robert Yeo is a national treasure. His poetry, plays and edited anthologies have contributed significantly to Singaporean literature over his long career, leading to his reception of the Public Service Medal in 1991 and the S.E.A. Write Award in 2011 for lifetime achievement.
To celebrate his eightieth birthday, NUS professor Dr Ismail S. Talib has assembled a wealth of tributes from Yeo’s friends both local and abroad—such as, in Singapore, Catherine Lim, Ovidia Yu, Rajeev Patke and Suchen Christine Lim; and, internationally, A. Robert Lee, Paul Sharrad, Chetana Nagavajara and Alfred Yuson—that point to life-changing encounters with Yeo and his works. This encomium presents the portrait of a man who has left an indelible mark on the national literary scene, and whose writing remains vital and relevant today.
Dr Ismail S. Talib has been lecturing in the Department of English Language and Literature at the National University of Singapore since 1986. He has been the regional editorial representative of the Journal of Commonwealth Literature for the bibliography of Singaporean literature (which later includes Malaysian literature) for more than twenty years now. Among his recent publications is a chapter in Volume 10 of The Oxford History of the Novel in English. He also has research interests in narratology and film.
Robert Yeo is Singapore's literary all-rounder. He has established himself as a playwright, poet and novelist. Although I have (sadly) not heard about him prior to this, this book is a testament to how much he has contributed to the literature scene in Singapore. How many people can have a book of tributed dedicated to your 80th birthday by so many other authors?
Great, soulful writings bringing me a touch of nostalgia in the days I used to dabble in theatre and literature. Miss this!
