Blaze, Maverick, and Gwen have never seen a dragon before, and they're from the Ruby Dragon Kingdom. That changes one summer when they're whisked away to the Land of Sand and Sun-against their will. Their cousins, Hailey and Claire, happen to be visiting at the time, so yeah, they're kidnapped too. They discover dragons aren't the myths they thought they were, and the dragons have stolen the Sand Dwellers' parents. The five cousins must use their magical talents to get them back . . . or they won't be allowed to go home. Can they solve the mystery of the missing parents before the dragons destroy everything?

The story itself is an adventure with cousins through desert, ruin, and dragons with magic and mystery. All good things. But it read like a beginning reader's chapter book, and I was not anticipating that. I had a hard time picturing children as young as eight riding horses, or more accurately, mounting and dismounting, without help. It was logistics like that and the dialogue, which did not fit the setting, that threw me off. For what it is, it's a good story with fairy-tale worldbuilding, suspense, and character building, but definitely more Middle Grade or Children's than the YA I thought it was.
