I was given a free copy of this book and I decided to give it an honest review.
The author's style of writing seems effortless. She gives you a total sense of place and characters, without bogging down the story with details. The pages flew by as I was absorbed in the story, but do not mistake this book as an easy read. There are some very dark elements in Hennion's story, but I don't know if trigger warnings are necessary as most all of these action take place off stage. They are alluded to and have consequences but are not gone into detail which make them somewhat more palatable. I wish more plot threads had been wrapped up but this is the first of a multi-book saga. All in all a very engrossing read.

The first thing to say is that this book is not going to be for everyone. In parts, it's brutal, disturbing, and more than a touch uncomfortable. But... It's important to note that nothing is without purpose, and I absolutely loved "The Book of Death". Jacklyn Hennion's writing is a gem amongst the other gems of the characters and the story itself. Full marks from me.

My thanks to the author and Hidden Gems. This review was written voluntarily and is entirely my own, unbiased, opinion.

I couldn’t put this book down for the second half! The author’s note on the amount of death in the book was accurate. I thought this would lead to not feeling invested in the characters, but that couldn’t have been further from the truth. I had to fight to urge to skip ahead to see what happened to my favorite characters. I can’t wait to read the second book.

I received a free copy of this book and want to give an honest review.

The book is well conceived and the writing is good. But even though I would love to know what happens, I don't want to read any more of the books. I didn't realize it until I read this book is that I'm so over all the violence towards women in some fantasy and all the death in some books. I've never liked books where they Macbeth everyone. I was not a fan of George RR Martin because of his constant killing off of the characters. I should have known from the title of this book. In a way, Death is a major character. (no, it isn't a personified character, there is just so much of it.) The rape scenes are not as graphic as I've seen but there was just too much of it.

It was difficult to decide on a rating for this book. On one hand, it was absorbing and a page turner. I enjoyed the setting, the magic was intriguing, and I liked the characters and sympathised with them. But on the other hand, I had difficulty with the book’s darker aspects. I don’t completely shy away from dark or adult themes but the amount of rape and sexual abuse here felt gratuitous to me; particularly nauseating was . I kept going to the end because I wanted to find out what would happen but, after a certain point, I’m not sure I can say I was enjoying it.

absolutely fantastic. like Eragon meets Throne of Glass. There are a lot of sensitive scenes so be aware of that but an amazing plot and lovely characters
kept me up reading it because of how hooked i was to the mysteries and what was gonna happen next and can't wait to read the second book
absolutely recommend but just take mind of the trigger warnings
