Dodging Calamities

Rate this book
My name is Tamsin Vale and I’m the last known fairy… And I think I’m out of time. The walls are closing in from all sides and we’re quickly running out of options.

But I don’t think help is coming.

Making up with Darby and Lucca—having them at my side—has helped my soul, but I’m still missing pieces of it. I want to let Hudson back in, though I don’t know how.

And I really wish I could move on from Craftsman. Why can I not let go of the man who nearly destroyed me?

There are too many other things I should be focused on. McGrath is circling and must be handled. The warlock elders are stepping up their attempts to get me. Others are getting too desperate and that makes people dangerous, but trying to make friends with the wrong people will get me killed.

I really wish help was coming because I don’t think I’ll survive without it.

Fighting The Good Fight

I’d probably give this book 4.5 ⭐️ if I could.

I really enjoyed this book. As usual it was filled with mayhem, angst and busting the bad guys. There is a LOT of plot happening, with alliances being made and poor Tamsin facing down all sorts of conspiracies and attempts on capturing her and her assets. At the same time as finishing her high school certification and attending her college classes she is sneaking around breaking out enslaved hobgoblins.

Tamsin is still dealing with her guys, they keep letting her down, or climbing back into her heart and then letting her down. I honestly don’t know why she bothers with them sometimes, even if they do love her, they are completely hopeless a lot of the time.

One thing I really liked about this book is that Tamsin uses her human contacts and knowledge of the human world in order to get one up on the supes. She uses their prejudices against them. I like that Tamsin doesn’t defeat everyone single handed. She is very powerful but it useless without people to train her and support her. She cannot stand alone against the entire supernatural world and her allies are very important to the story. It’s not just her overpowering all her enemies to get what she wants, she has to be clever and work hard and be able to work as part of a team.

There is a lot in this book about the way supes treat females. This is a recurring theme within this series, but it seems much more prominent in this book in particular. Tamsin is single handedly trying to bring the supernatural world out of the dark ages and encourage women to embrace feminism. There are quite a lot of articulate arguments and reasoning from her to the male supernaturals she encounters about why sexism is rife and good men don’t seem to see it.

I have two little niggles about these books and they are the same for all of them. Firstly, there are often really obvious typos or words missing here and there. I think this is partly because the author has a really really tight publishing schedule and this means that some things get missed. Secondly, when her main characters get on an angry rant, they all sound the same, across all of the books, and series. They use the same sort of slang and verbal short cuts. It’s a little thing, but it bugs me a little because her characters are not all alike, but when they rant, they could be the same character. That’s it, those are my two niggles. Everything else is addictive reading. I can’t stop and often re-read series because I enjoy the stories so much. This author is a great story teller, even if her proof reading isn’t perfect!

Love the story but

The only thing I have been upset about they way she is handling her men. It just always seems like shes finding fault in everything they do and they spend a lot of time walking on egg shells around her not being sure what will set her off. I love how strong she is when defending others but she should be willing to hear the whole story and gain a better understanding of thing before she just blows. It sometimes feels like she doesn't care that other have teams and might not agree with what she is doing. If they disagree with her their against her fully and her feeling are hurt again and they have to scramble to reassure her they are still on her side. That's just my feeling but I am still hooked and can't wait for the next story!!!

Trauma trauma trauma

This was not my favorite book in this series. I was so wishing for help for Tamsin after the last book and my wish was answered but is he really help or just another problem. Hmmm, I want to just shoot him and move on. I think that would be less trauma for Tam. One major player that is a big problem is finally removed from the board, I approve even if another moves right in. I absolutely adore the justice that is handed out at the end of the book, couldn't have happened to a nicer group of guys, lol.
I understand that Tam was abused and neglected and the trauma is real but I feel like she uses it as an excuse or crutch in her relationships. They all have issues as well but I feel like their trauma is not as important as hers. Is it because they are men? They want to be there for her and she shuts down and backs off. I know the weirdest thing can set you off but if you want relationships you can't just shut down with your friends, family and lovers. It takes work on both sides or they will quit trying. I love Craftsman and Hudson, yes they made mistakes but Craftsman had his own real trauma and I don't think Tams understands what he was dealing with. Hudson was trying to do the right thing according to how he was raised and lets face it most boys mature slower than girls the same age. Darby is sweet and a rock. Lucca is sweet and hot. Hope they figure it out.

Favorite book of this series so far!

Whoa, I can not even begin to break down this book ... Erin took this one to a whole new level... my heart was pounding while reading some parts of this book.. the action picks up big time ... the council Is making moves and they aren’t being sneaky about it anymore..

Tasmin is making a lot of way into restoring faerie but when she finally finds someone there he definitely isn’t what she was expecting and he doesn’t make things any easier for her..

Craftsman and Hudson are still trying to make amends for their mistakes but Tasmin is struggling to forgive them but she’s come along way .. Darby and Lucca are in but for how long? They keep making stupid choices and Tasmin is scared...when Tasmin makes a decision about Mel without consulting her she finally realizes that she can’t do it all by herself ..

I don’t know what’s going to happen next but I know I’m definitely here for it... I really hope a Tasmin and her men can make more moves in faerie.. I love this series and I really need her to forgive Hudson lol.. let’s see how it goes !!

So Much...Everything

Wow. Just wow. I don’t know where to start. I will preface this with the fact there will be spoilers.

SPOILERS

Okay, with her four guys, it’s like two steps forward and three steps back. By the end of the book, she wasn’t completely solid with any of them. Mel’s no longer talking to her. And she finally found a fricking fairy!!! Only to have said fairy be a complete and total jerk. Horrible. As sexist and power-hungry as the warlock council. Two books ago, everything ended on such a down note; but now we are back there again, just in a different way.

Long story short, lots of drama, lots of action, lots of heartbreak. Amazing book.

Best one yet!

I adore this series, each book keeps getting better and better. This book really takes you through a lot of character development from the first page all the way to the last. You get to the end and you cry out "wait I need more" It doesn't end on a cliffhanger any more than any of her books. However you definitely are left with a hunger for more books in the series. I stayed up all night reading this book as I couldn't put it down. When I got to the end I wanted to read the whole thing over but I had to get SOME sleep, if only a couple of hours. This book is worth every penny.

The crazy drama continues

I was so excited this book came out today that I had to read it to continue the crazy fairy story. I had reread the last book to get my mind in the story and then I read 7 and it was great. It continues the story and I an not a plot spoiler so here it is. Contains dragons, wolves, witches, hobgoblins, school, councils, FBI, snark, crazy relationship twists, more food mentioned than in any pantry and a great paraphrased quote 'I am living in a Disney movie with a lot more guys for the princess oh and a lot more sex.' Looking forward to the next one in this series, but also hoping for the next in Karma bakery.

OMG, OMG, OMG!!!

Absolutely incredible! Well, I was half right about her origins, and book 7 of this amazing series is my new favorite. Poor Tamsin, the hits just keep on coming and the « Gem » she did find was a big let down, what a douche canoe! Having a little time with River was the was pretty awesome but for the reason he showed up. This instalment brings more of the storyline together and raises more drama than anyone should have to face and I loved every second of this book and am dying to see what’s next and what she will actually do with the promise she made to herself at the end. If you’re looking to read a series where the FMC is tough, kicks arse and takes names, this series is worthy of reading!

Wow just Wow

Absolutely loved this book, and really can’t wait for the next one, Erin R Flynn you are a genius at writing in a way that keeps the reader enthralled, as I literally couldn’t put the book down
Tamsin is an absolute bad ass, something’s happened that I knew would, because they had to eventually, but as always this amazing author still managed to throw in a few surprises
I recommend these books to anyone, who loves a book that has an amazing plot, and likes to get lost in their book worlds

Dang on it man do I ever love this series!... But I only have one critique Erin and other reads...there needs to better proofreading for your books, because some of these paragraphs are a total mess and it kinda take away the reading flow when I have to figure out what you're trying to say... other then that I freaking love this series and I'm looking forward to the next book of my favorite heroine Tamsin Vale!

Love the story , love the characters ! Tamsin is one of my top five favorite females characters . I preorder as soon as it is possible . Seraphine Thomas is in that top five also . I can't say anymore because I would be giving away too much of the story . Worth every penny ! This author has a very good imagination . I would love to be able to read her mind . Fascinating !

Tamsin is starting to come across as unhinged in her interactions with Craftsman. I'm surprised he even still wants to be around her ... I know I don't during these relationship scenes!

This plot was probably one of my favorites of this series. I loved that we finally got some answers to what happened in faerie and the steps towards fixing the supe world.

The only thing contextually botherin me is how I love tamsins relationships at the same time I hate them. I understand how Tam’s trauma affects her response to issues in her relationships but it’s almost as she sees the guys trauma especially craftsman as less than hers. I want to see her make up with all the guys just to see them all together because.... I MEAN... can you imagine the HEAT🔥🔥

The editing could be a little better, but tbh I’d rather these books be pumped out quick. I’ll concede these few mix ups since it’s easy to read thru. The voice changes for dialogue could be a little clearer for each character. Their very unique in personality and but they tend to talk the same since the beginning. The “sure” and modifiers every time it’s more than a few lines of dialogue tend to be trite with every character

Otherwise I loved this book and where the series as a whole is going can’t wait for book 8!!

Addictive Series

Let me just say first that I am so addicted to this series. Sadly though this book was extra frustrating for me. Why does Tamsin hold such strong grudges over her guys? I keep thinking that she’ll cut them some slack but she’s brutal. It’s kind of making me hate her. Also, can we just say this new guy was a MAJOR disappointment. I keep hoping that Tamsin will find someone to explain her mates to her and how to claim them and maybe she’ll soften up a little towards them. I was also hoping she’d find a fairy mate to go with her harem but after this book it doesn’t look good. Sad and frustrating but I’m not giving up on this one.

I’ll be honest. I keep reading these because she IS a kickass heroine... aaaand... I get more and more frustrated with her refusal to find balance for herself. She’s got all this on her plate. She’s doing amazing work to take down the corruption. She’s changing her world. I applaud ALL OF THAT SHIT. She wants honor and justice restored to her world. She wants the fairies to return. She doesn’t want to be alone. But she dishes out equal hurt to the men who gather around her and refuses to consider how much she is equally ravaging them. Yes, traumatic past... but she is traumatizing them too. With all of her abandonment issues, those guys just keep coming back. It’s almost like she acknowledges they are people, but refuses to be emotional beings who also have questions, uncertainty, and fear (mostly around LOSING HER). I wish they could find some healthy center. Yea, healthy relationships. Given the author said this was an anticipated 25 book series, I hope something starts to turn that way sooner then the end of this. Plenty of series have taken a long time to get to the end, but can she find a way to stop further damaging the people who keep showing up for her? Oh, and that new guy IS a dick.

I have tossed around the idea of writing a review for this book and series as a whole for awhile. The first few books were truly amazing and captivating. I loved the character development and Tamsins snarky attitude. However, this book and the one before Tamsin has started going from snarky and badass to kind of narcissistic and abusive to the people the in her life. She is always angry at the guys because they do not behave the way she wants all the time. She gets mad at them for every little thing and instead of talking about it just decides that shes gonna end things or threaten to end things until they grovel to come back to her. Many of the things she gets upset about are extremely hypocritical because she does the same thing to one or all of them. In this book while she has reasons she goes as far as doing something to Mel and her family that she has blown up about when done to her in the past. The character is actually making it very hard to continue reading, she is coming a crossed as abusive and controlling of the people she claims to care about. At this point the world is captivating I love some of the characters but Tamsin constantly getting mad at the guys and throwing them away all the time is really impacting my ability to stay interested. The world building is awesome and this book added a new twist that is interesting but the main character right now is just horrible.

Dodging Calamities, the seventh book in the Artemis University series, is an ebook I downloaded from Kindle Unlimited.

Much as I love the world-building and storyline for this series, I'm starting to see a shift in Tamsin from strong and independent to vain and solitary. In a long-running series, readers love to see growth and complexity in the characters and relationships, but things seem to be regressing in both areas. I'd love to see everyone get on the same page and start working and communicating to make the tension more focused on their mission to fix the supe society, than always trying to fix their misunderstandings due to (mostly Tamsin) jumping to conclusions.

Note: if you’re a grammar geek, this series may not be for you. Spelling and punctuation errors, not to mention poor grammar make this a challenging read.

Fun Read Per Usual

I really enjoy both this series and this author.

Even though I don't agree with all of Tamsin's choices, I mostly love her as a character. She is super powerful but damaged and flawed. What I am not fond of is as much as I like a good grovel, Tamsin is always getting angry with her men. Usually, they do something worth her ire but she is so harsh and unforgiving, past the point where it is obvious that the transgression wasn't done intentionally or maliciously. . It somewhat gels with her backstory but considering how she is far from perfect, it makes me uncomfortable to read at times. That being said, I still love these books and plan to continue reading.

Getting a little soap boxy

Okay, so seven books in and the ten minute speeches every other chapter on men being sexist is getting old. The way Tamsin is with her guys is a level of immaturity that doesn't fit with the rest of her worldliness. Yes, she had trauma and fears commitment and abandoning, but she just expects the guys to forgive her when she does things, but makes them suffer while not listening to them? Not exactly relationship goals after a year and a half of being with them. Seems like this could wrap up in just a few more books if the soapbox scenes and over the top relationship drama ended. P.S. if she ends up with the dark fairy prince it negates everything she claims is wrong.

Tedious

The story is getting harder to read honestly. The whole I'm a badass but you hurt me and I love you but I don't forgive you drama is getting old really fast. Like she's been keeping secrets and hiding her power but expects all of her lovers to cater to her every unspoken demand and understand her wants with out having to speak them and punishing them when they obviously fail. Refusing to define relationships beyond the bedplay and getting all emotional and hurt when the guys refuse to act like faithful hounds. This story needed to wrap up like 3 books ago. Honestly regret getting sucked into the blackhole of this authors writing.

At this point, isn't she being a bit of a hypocrit? She hates when people makes decisions for her, og take the decisions out of her hands. But didn't she do the exact same thing? I get why she did and for all the right reasons. But the shit she put the guys through, for witholding information and taking her ability to deal with the issue properly out of her hands, is exactly what she has done to Mel. It's the exactly same damn thing

Holy freaking f*ck! She found one, she actually found one. And what a douchekanoe... I felt her pain through the words, her hope and faith slipping away. Yes the ending means she is fired up, but wrath is not enough...
These series are extremely fast paced and hurt my heart, but oh so good! I just hope that there is some relief for Tamsin.

Whoah- do this is the book where stuff HAPPENS! It’s all building up and Tam is smack in the middle of it. It’s drama, danger, victory and pain, and the journey still just feels like it’s beginning.

Better but now a wait. Spoilers within

This one was better but still a lot happened off page. All of Tamsin’s planning that I knew nothing about, was never alluded to by her came to be seen by everyone, AND the readers. This way of writing frustrates me as well because as the audience in her head, we should be privy to her plans, and understand her feelings, and if we don’t explaining why.

There are still some things I’m taking issue with, mainly the misspelling and of course the glossing of information or events. We spend tons of time on Tamsin’s need to eat, which is a fundamental issue for fairies, but I don’t think every meal needs to be noted. I’d much rather see her training, or her learning and what she learned.

The surprising thing is this is called Artemis University, but it doesn’t really have to anything to do with the school or classes. The cast of characters surround the school, but honestly more and more are happening at Tamsin’s houses. I mean we barely get much school any more.

Izzy was an afterthought we barely saw her. Blake gets to come back this semester and the council tries to trap Tamsin but we don’t get to really see how everything goes down. We get told it. We get told the aftermath of things, which is annoying.

Tamsin also finally released a fairy, and we know a bit more about her. Which honestly wasn’t surprising at all as that’s what I’ve thought from fairly early into the book. The guy she rescues, releases? Idk, he isn’t the most pleasant. I don’t like him, and I suspect he is going to be shady. Maybe try to take credit for how he’s helping Tamsin, but take credit for the entire thing? I don’t know.

Tamsin’s issues with her men is annoying in some ways and understandable in others. Due to her trauma I totally get why she freaks so hard about things that somewhat adjusted people may not take issue with. It makes sense, but it is still annoying. Most of the book is spent with issues between them all, and then more issues that happen within this book. I don’t like this step back go forward step back more. I like how they talk things out but I wish I could understand Tamsin’s reactions just slightly better because not all the times is it clear why something might have been an issue. My highlights will also have issues I have. Like the room was so quite “you could hear a flying fart” Tamsin has used this phrase entirely toooooooooo much throughout the series. Too often. There are a few other phrases that repeat too, or how one character will say something and then another character completely separate from the last will say or echo the exact same wording but normally wouldn’t talk like that.

I wish there was more editing to help the pacing, description and help the plot fill in. Overall I am definitely here for Tamsin’s story and what may be a 25 books series per the author’s note in I think book 2.

Please note the following review encompasses books 7 through 12 of the SERIES. As each book depends on the prior books, I am not reviewing each individually to cut down on repetition. Following this review, I will be reviewing the series in batches of 5, with a final end review of the series as a whole.

As always, I will endeavor to minimize spoilers, but please read at your own risk.

OH.MY.GODDESS.

I am practically speechless right now. I just closed my Kindle on that wicked relationship cliffhanger at the end of book 7, and my better half (at least according to him) is laughing at me for looking like a fish with my mouth opening and closing. (He's a real peach 🍑, 😆)

So far, I can honestly say that I have never read anything like Artemis University before. It is one of a kind, which honestly makes me a little sad, because it is so freakin amazing. It is nonstop. Full out. Action, coming of age, romantic relationship drama, friendship makers and breakers, enemies to lovers, heiress to the empire ... I could go on except I can't find the words. This series has everything you could want. Hot and steamy. Warm and domestic. Plus some swashbuckling and tight pants. It is almost the Princess Bride of romance series.

Well, if Buttercup was really a Fairy, and there were multiple Wesleys, some of whom are quite dark on the morally gray scale. The R.O.U.S.'s easily could translate to the assorted corrupt elders and councils, provided they could survive and even thrive away from the Fire Swamp ....

I am getting way off track. Anywho, there is a metric frakton that happens in these 5 books, but I am not going into details. No spoilers, remember? Just trust me. Have someone hold your beer and download the first book. It feels like a crazy leap, but you will love every moment of learning to fly.

However, before I go, I do want to add a content warning of sorts because mental health matters. Contained in the story so far, you will find past trauma (physically, emotionally, and smexually.) There are forced abductions, bullying outside of the harem, references to ongoing trafficking, violence, attempted forced mating and SA, intimate partner abuse, family disconnect and related trauma from both sides, and discussion of forced breeding. Please know your limits and read responsibly.
