WHAT HAPPENS WHEN A BOY IS PUSHED TO THE WALL AND A GIRL HAS TO FIGHT FOR HER HONOR AND FREEDOM? Gopi, just 11 years, has promised to bring smile to Ria. She is rich but handicapped. Gopi is poor and broken. But it was a promise he could die for. Thus, begins his transformation from a boy to a man who unknowingly is running on a collision course with the high and mighty. But he is none to be stopped. He knows he will have to do something unthinkable to bring her a smile. His elder sister Seema is just 15 and has been kidnapped by money lender and kept with other inmates in the hostage camp. With goons hovering around, she has no choice except to fight back, or to escape. Both are fatal. When pushed to the corner one day by a guard, she stares at her horrible self – that she could murder. Thereafter, one day she manages to escape with another inmate only to frustratingly return to her enclosure when her friend is shot dead by guards. And just when she was beginning to surrender to her fate, destiny throws yet another chance for freedom, but it has a repulsive rider – she will have to protect the ones who she would be happy to kill. The rider she will have to save her captor from a deadly conspiracy.
This story broadly revolves around three characters, Gopi, an eleven-year old boy, his fifteen-year old sister Seema and a deaf, dumb and handicapped girl Ria. The commonality in all of their individual spectrum is that a devastating incident, changed the course of their lives forever.
If I had to describe the novel in two words, then it would be “ENGROSSING” and “CAPTIVATING”. After a long time, I read something like this which has a multitude of layers to unravel with each and every page that I turn. No wonder, I couldn’t help but finish it in one sitting. One of the themes that lingered on me for a long time is the socio-economic differences between Gopi and Ria. This novel is very authentic in highlighting the wretched condition of Gopi and his family. The portrayal of debt trap and the hopelessness in the family is very well narrated.
The author with his writing style and storytelling abilities was able to make my heart weep for Ria. The story of her accident that made her deaf, dumb and handicapped is heart-wrenching too.
This novel is also acting as a mirror, reflecting the darkest parts of human nature, conspiracies, kidnappings and most importantly, murders! The way Seema’s captivity in a place worse off than a decent dungeon is depicted will caused a lump in my throat. This shows that how such cruelty is still prevalent in the world, where humans are treated as mere objects. It is thought-provoking in many ways and is a toe-gripping rollercoaster ride. I simply loved the author’s writing style. Though the change in narratives and scenarios is very frequent in this novel, but not at once, did I feel confused. Saying that this book was merely interesting would be an understatement.
The overall plot is unique and was satisfying to read.Ultimately it is a gripping saga of finding the light at the end of the tunnel and never losing hope.
Mother's eyes brimmed with tears. “He has forgotten his mischiefs. I wish I knew the secret of preserving his childhood for him to live it later. He is becoming a man much too quickly.” “Destiny”, father said. “Poverty”, mother replied gently.
When I picked this book, I was expecting it to be more like a crime thriller, but what I didn't expect to read was fiction filled with many overwhelming emotions. This book has the capability to melt its reader's heart through the lives of Gopi, Ria, and Seema. All these three characters lived, suffered, and experienced those row realities that exist in our society. Either it's Gopi's poverty and his willingness to be useful for a good cause, Ria's struggles as a handicapped child to make her place in an ordinary school, or Seema's helplessness to become the slave of her circumstances; somewhere between their life journey through this book, I found myself gravitated towards them!
Even if it was a good read, there were some down points I can't deny; the start was just too slow for me and it took some time before I found the story pace. There were also some immature technical errors in this book which affected my overall reading experience whenever I observed them. Apart from that, I loved reading this book for its characters and the way they evolved throughout the book.
The author’s detailing for all characters—even if they may have a small part to play— is commendable. He gives them their share of their past, adds reasons to exist in the present situations, and connects them brilliantly with each other. And here, I am not just talking about Gopi, Ria, and Seema, but Yogesh, Anita, Ajay, Sheela, Hari Singh, or Avinash. Many such characters might not have appeared as significant as they were if it was not for the author's skills to put the soul in them!
As I mentioned, the start was indeed very slow for me but once I caught that pace, the pages were turning on their own and events folded and unfolded as the story developed. If anyone is going to read this book then I will surely suggest to stick to the first part because then what the author may bring is worth a read.
From the unique title "After the dark", the book had grabbed my attention without any doubt. Till the end, it was hooked me with pages which are really mindblowing. The plot of this book is simple yet so engaging indeed. It was a great read and I love the way it captured complete soul.
The complete story revolves around Ria and Gopi's life phases and their bonding. Ria lost her parents and physical abilities after an accident. There is another important character of Seema who is devastated and fights for her freedom from a hostage camp. What's next? Will they all get back to a normal life? What does fate want to play with them? Grab the book and you will love it.
The storylines are very catchy and have the power to impress the readers. Sometimes I felt that the story is taking lanes but not the high road. But that was very minor and can be neglected. The writing style is very smooth and so classy. All major and sub-characters have the same importance and they all are very well developed and defined. Overall the plot is creative and very satisfying to complete.
The title is very unique. After seeing the title and the cover, at first, I had creepy feelings about the book, but after finishing I must say, the story was the perfect read of this month. It's a ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐/5 read and highly recommended to everybody.
There was a time when popular Indian literature was, at best, stuck at romance books with similar plotlines and cliché tropes. So to see books such as After the Dark rising to popularity, despite being of a completely different genre, was what encouraged me to read this book, and I am honestly pleasantly surprised.
After the Dark is a story that revolves around children who face, and ultimately fight, the dark cruelty of life in poverty. It narrates the story of three main characters: Ria, an eleven-year-old girl who lost her parents at a tender age to an accident that also crippled her for life; her friend Gopi, and his sister Seema who was kidnapped by their village's money-lender when their father could not repay his loan. The story follows the lives of these children as they take the road to crime to stand up against the moneylender, and what ensues is a long line of murders, conspiracies, and a whole lot of thrill.
What I liked best about After the Dark was how unique the plotline was. The story illustrates the plight of the poor in a way that would break your heart. The middle of the story gets complex and scattered, but the ending wraps it up nicely. The pace is steady and gripping. The writing, however, felt clumsy at some points. The writer was clearly passionate about portraying the life of the poor but was not very empathetic towards them. This made me strike off a point from the book.
Overall, After the Dark is a book that is not perfect by far, but it is an honest effort that would make a good one-time read for everybody.
Under the cover of darkness, a lot can happen, lives can change. In the heart-thumping novel, 'After the Dark' by Rohit Pagare, we come across three kids - Gopi, whose sister has been kidnapped yet in the eyes of adversity, he is determined to help another; Seema, who is kidnapped and trapped in the entangled web of darkness with no hope of escape; and Ria, an orphaned, dumb, deaf and handicapped school girl. A single string of hope, fight and strength bind all of them together. Can they achieve their purpose, or will life beat them down first?
The novel, in my words, is about children's fight against the injustice created by adults. It made me pause and think in multiple sections. The world is cruel to all, and circumstances can change at any time. The three protagonists in the story had to fight their own battles, which made me feel powerful while reading their story. The characterisation is on-point. I loved the graph they achieved as the story progressed, but it wasn't just the major characters. Minor characters like Sheela, Anita, Yogesh, and more have been given due importance in the narration. While at times I did just want the focus to remain at the centre, it also made me feel that without the compelling side characters, the novel wouldn't have been what it is. A thorough, slow reading of the book can open up more interpretations.
I wouldn't say the book is perfect. When it started, I couldn't connect to the narration. It felt abrupt, and I couldn't figure out the progression of the storyline. If the storyline wasn't as good, I might not have been able to read on. As I read, I got used to the writing style and was intrigued by the book. The novel is almost 300 pages long so the author must pay attention to showing rather than telling.
Overall, I do recommend this book. There is no doubt that this book has a lot to offer to readers. With a bit more polishing, this book could be perfect.

Have you ever thought you can be attracted to someone's suffering? How nicely society has victimized, and at the same time glorified "poverty"? It is hard to fathom. And here, chaos and misery in their lives enticed them. Blurb and title gave rise to my confusion and I thought it would be love story with some dramatic family background. But I was glad it proved me wrong. ▫ The plot is a tricky, nail-biting and overwhelming emotional roller coaster ride. It revolves around two characters whose lives are totally in contrast yet interconnected. A blend of rural and urban lifestyle is depicted evidently. Battle of protecting one you love and gut attacking your conscious mind narrated incredibly by author. Where both characters try to adjust in new ways. Other supporting characters have also played a good role supporting plot and main characters. This is the plus point. Supporting characters are important too. Lucid language would make you feel to highlight everything.
Altogether, get ready for an extremely expressive plot.
I got to know about this book through a friend, I was surprised to find this book because off late I haven't read any other book in the same genre by an Indian author. I really loved the blurb, I could straight away connect to the stories of the three children not in the literal sense obviously, but as a reader you have that empathy when you read such stories, and you want to read how the story unfolds. My feeling wax exactly that after just reading the blurb. The book's about three children, they all are connected to each other, they have some goals, but are dealing with their own share of problems, trying to get out of the hole.
I just loved the way how the story was inter wined by the author. The middle part did get murkier but the ending was superb.
Overall I think I'm ending 2020 by reading a great book, this again Is a bit of a surprise because the book doesn't really have a happy plot line, but that beautiful narration of the story stood out.
Overall my rating for the book would be 5 🌟 for sure.

Lucid language and strong charcter is the beauty of the book. After the dark is a great read for all those who loves sunshine at the end.
I expected this book to be dark and sad but I was disillusioned after the first chapter! This book revolves around young protagonists who are so strongly built. They are brave and complex and detailed, that one of the things I liked about the book, even though the characters are kids, the way the author has written them, it’s like reading about complex adults. This book did make me a little sad, because of the difficulties the protagonists had to face but with sheer perseverance, they made it through. I was engrossed in the writing from page one and did not wanna put it down. This book in many ways tell you about the society we live in. this book may be classified as ‘fiction’ but the story tells nothing but the truth about the nation we live in and the problems you have to face if you’re a person with no money or a to have a disability. I really enjoyed this book even though it made me sad. I recommend.
"After The Dark" written by Rohit Pagare is a thriller story. The story revolves around the around three main characters Ria who lost her parents in a car accident, Gopi and his sister Seema. The author has very well narrated the phases of their life. The story is about their life struggles, poverty, and the reality of our society.
My Views: The title and the cover are perfectly apt to the story. The language of the book is simple and lucid. The plot of the story is unique. The pace of the book is slow it could have been better. The characters of the story are well crafted. The story is full of twist and turns. Overall a good thriller book. Recommended this book to everyone.
If I had to say something about this book than I would say a mirror to the outlook of a society. Who will not be engrossed if we gotta read about 3 kids named Gopi, Seema and Ria. The state of Gopi's family was very heart breaking but a true reality of a lot of people. . Was Ria deaf, dumb and handicapped from birth or did something dangerous happened to her and her life changed? What is behind Seema's journey? The journey of all these kids will make your heart heavy but will not give you a chance to out down the book. The writing is brilliant and engrossing but the pick up for me took some pages but I was happy that I waited and here I am impressed by this book. There is sadness, murder, kidnapping soo have a look before you get into it.
There is a lot of poverty and disparity in the world, many people suffer from it. In Rohit Pagare's fictional world, there exist three children- Ria, Gopi, and Seema, who fight against the disabilities that limit their physical power and reach the end of the dark tunnel.
The plot is a very engaging story of a life full of gut-wrenching moments that these innocents have to go through. There is a lot of thrill involving various conspiracies. The plot is so beautifully vivid and keeps engaging every core of the reader. With its lucid language but an amazing narrative, the author has given a deep, thought-provoking, and chilling story to read and retrospect at the same time.
The title of the book gave me a feel that this was going to be a thriller, but instead it turned out to be a story of three children Ria, Gopi and Seema. Each of them suffer from some disability and this story of about how they overcome those disabilities and come out stronger.
The plot of the book I would say was really really nice and was a complete roller coaster emotional ride for me. I loved how engaging the book was and how it made me feel all the emotions . The helplessness, the anger, the courage, I could feel everything. This book gave me goosebumps. . The characters were well drawn, with narration to the point. I would say this book a really good read and I do recommend it.
Compelling and gripping After the Dark, perfect name for this story, a story that presents the the power of hope. The story is not of one character, and each and every character is significant, with their own influence over the story. The story pivots over the life of Ria and Gopi as he brings honor to Ria, a special child. The story opens with the accident which caused Ria loss of vision and sight. The intense plot and engaging presentation does provides a gripping read. The presentation is simple, and the balance between suspense, and elements like feelings, emotion presentation, supporting characters gives a simple and very clear reading experience.
Apart from a captivating title and unique plot, 'After the Dark' is a simple and engaging book. . The powerful book revolves around the life of Ria and Gopi and their bond. Leading an abnormal life, with physical disabilities and losing their parents, will their life ever be normal again? To know, you will need to read the book. . The plot touches various sensitive topics and reflects the dark side of humanity. Yet at the end, their is always a ray of hope. . I loved the spooky cover. Also, the title. The plot is stunning. The characters are well built and driven. . The story is for all kinds of readers, old and new.
To begin with, the cover of the book is really good. I really like fonts and the effects used on the cover page, colour combination is really good too. This book was like a rollercoaster ride for me. I really enjoyed the concept and the overall story. It was a little disturbing for me at times, but this is what made this book beautiful, its rawness added a separate spice to the book. Overall if you want to read something thrilling and really entertaining then this book is for you
