There are six eggs in Mother Hen’s nest, but-- Chip! Chip! Chip! Chip! Chip! --only five eggs hatch! The sixth egg goes on a high-rolling adventure across the barnyard, past the pig and the tomato patch, and, finally, into Mother Hen’s waiting wings. What a wild ride! Lisa Campbell Ernst’s bold, energetic illustrations transform a short trip across the barnyard into a rollicking good time.
This is a great book for beginning readers. I would say probably first grade. The story is about a Hen who has six eggs. Five hatch but one just rolls out of the nest. The egg that wouldn't hatch sent the whole barn on a marathon chasing after this egg. Finally, when the egg cracks, the chick explains this crazy ride he had. It is very simple, but a think young children would really get a kick out of it. I remember reading it as a child, and finding it so funny that all these animals were chasing after this rolling egg. I thought this book was a decent enough book. I think that some of the words were easy for a first grader so, to some it might be a little easy. However, it is a great book to have in your library especially for those students who are not quite at reading level, such as ELL students.
This cute little level 2 bilingual book would be great for beginners to use for Readers' Theater. It also has a little art activity in the back. Simple and repetitive text.
Green Light Reader-Level 2. Leveled as short sentences and simple dialogue with creative stories. This a familiar plot of barnyard animals joining together in a chase. In this case, the hen has one egg that didn't hatch and when it rolls out of the nest, she gives chase with other animals joining her. The book is written in English and Spanish. There is a step by step activity at the end allowing kids to make the chick that wouldn't hatch.
