In a time so long ago that no one remembers, the people of the old lands used to worship and sacrifice to cruel gods to appease them, and those gods warred against each other, caring nothing for the plight of mortals. But that was before the collapse of the old world and before the time when people fled in their thousands across the sea. In the lands of the Whispering Coast, there are new gods to worship, though miracles are rarely witnessed. There are so many untapped riches that one could easily forget the past. But the old gods are waking once more from their slumber under the seas and the dark places below the earth, and they have a need for war. On what Sir Roth Harlan thought was a mundane voyage to an island to fetch a captive, he will discover a threat to the safety of everyone in the occupied lands. Everything he has ever known is at stake, and Roth will find that protecting humanity comes with a price.
GLYNN JAMES is an author of science fiction, post-apocalyptic, dark fantasy, horror, and dystopian fiction. His love of science fiction began when he was eight years old after discovering HP Lovecraft and Richard Matheson, and then later on Terry Pratchett, Neil Gaiman, James Herbert, Clive Barker, and Stephen King.
In addition to being author of the “ALTERLIGHT” supernatural mystery thriller series, he is author of the dark sci-fi series "DIARY OF THE DISPLACED", the post-apocalyptic "THROWN AWAY" series, and co-author of the "ARISEN" series and the “DUSTFALL” series.
I enjoyed the start of this new series from this author and, as usual, it's the characters that make it compelling. In this story, there is a vast cast, some more interesting than others. I especially liked the girl who is sold to Supply (an army contingent) by her father before he returns to soldiering.
There is a pandemic of the gruesome kind that is infecting humans and turning them into 'zombies', while other lizard-like creatures are monster killers - but as to why and what will happen...?
This story has its roots in fantasy yet is surrounded by horror.
The writing style is excellent - fast-paced with an easy flow. There is a great sense of place, plenty of tension and some 'bloody' scenes.
It's a pity book two isn't available (but I hope it'll be on Kindle Unlimited as well).
This book hooked me from the beginning! Glynn did a great job creating mystery wrapped in Medieval fantasy with a splash of zombie related fun but more intriguing and complicated than other stories of that genre. He writes in a way that makes you connect and want to see how the story turns out for the characters. Can’t wait to read book two!!!
