From the Authors Invitation This book is about going home. It is about a place and a time that no longer exist—other than in my mind and my memory. The place is a small town in east-central Illinois. The time is mid-twentieth century—the 1950’s and early 1960’s. Tuscola was surrounded by corn and soybean fields on the black-soil prairie land common in mid-America. The time has long faded into years and decades. The place is still there, but the world surrounding it has changed beyond recognition. What happened to the world of yesterday? When we were young and full of dreams—full of anticipation of a future still over the horizon? A future soon to become a past we yearn for.
