Paranormal Investigator, Sidney Lake doesn’t jump at shadows. The weird stuff is her jurisdiction. When the mangled body of a supposedly extinct creature turns up in New York City’s subway system, she’s number one on the Medical Examiner’s speed dial.
But this case hits too close to home when clues point her toward the truth about her parents’ brutal murder twelve years ago. Her boss Mitchell Harris, questions whether she should continue to investigate. However, Sidney insists on facing her greatest fears and putting her parents’ memory to rest once and for all.
What she uncovers sheds a light on secrets that reach further into the darkness than she ever wanted to go… and leads her to a future she never imagined.
Sarah Lee Blair earned a BA in Creative Writing from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. While spending a semester abroad at Swansea University in Wales she traveled to nearby Bath and Glastonbury often, drawing inspiration for her writing from the myths and legends surrounding the area. Sarah now resides just north of Atlanta, Georgia with her husband, their two children, and chihuahua. While writing is her first passion, she also enjoys sewing, tater tots, catching up on her teetering TBR pile, and hanging out on her back porch drinking sweet tea.
First things first, let me just say how wonderful Ms. Blair is and give the rest of you a warning. The Nook version of this novel is wonky and hard to read, but I'm sure if you contact Blair, she will email you a PDF (like she did with me). Thank you for letting me be able to enjoy this book without the added headache because it was fantastic!
I stink at reviews because my brain is a mish-mosh of anything and everything I've ever thought about, and I can hardly begin to organize it. So I will quickly go through and say I ABSOLUTELY recommend to paranormal lovers, romance lovers, and people that binge watch all of Supernatural in a week. You will adore this as much as I did.
Characters: Kick. Ass.
Sidney is a BAMF without the added Mary Jane BS of not wanting to be one. She kicks demon butt and takes names, all while owning her sordid past and moving on from it. She's a hell of a protagonist and one I would love to hang out with, even if I'd be a bit afraid of her.
Williams, Sid's partner, is just the most adorable human ever. He's perfect. That's all I can say, really. Other than, it's so refreshing to read about a male and female who are best friends without an ounce of romance. Their relationship is fantastically heartwarming.
Mitch/ AKA The Chief is pretty sexy in his own oldie way. His character felt real, raw, and not some generic, stereotypical, angry police chief. I am so tired of those.
Steamy D/ AKA Dimitrius / AKA STEAMY FREAKING D almost killed me. He's too much. A++++++ male character. 15/10 would sleep with. 18/10 would die for.
My only negative that took this down a half star was the lack of female characters. Other than Sidney and Williams' wife, there were none to be seen. Perhaps the sequel will give way to another female badass or two. I would really like to see that, since Blair is able to write them so well.
PLOT: This shit was bananas (in the best way)
When you start your journey in Darkness Shifting, it's a pretty awesome world. Since Sidney is immersed in the magic elements of our world, it comes across as magical realism almost, which is pretty freaking dope and rare. Once the story unfolds, however, you will be gasping and squealing and applauding Sarah L. Blair's use of mythology and lore. In the beginning, what gripped me was the characters. I liked their relationships and that they seemed like real, 3-dimensional people. About fifty pages in, and I was hooked on the mystery. It's seriously wonderful, and I'm not including any spoilers because I can't put into words how much I LOOOOVVVEEEDDD the backstory to this.
Related Novels: This most reminded me of an adult version of The Raven Boys. Let me explain though. It's way sexier (waaaayyy sexier) and much more paranormal, but the mythology is so well thought out and explained that you don't need to rely on the characters to carry the story. If you're a fan of those books (and 18+), grab this one.
All in all, DARKNESS SHIFTING was a novel that immediately grabbed my attention and held it captive the entire time. The plot was executed to perfection, and the characters were so realistic that I could almost hear them speaking to me from the pages. The descriptions that Blair used were so well done that I thought I was there with them, even during the bloodier parts. Her action sequences contained enough punch and kick assery without going overboard that didn't feel the need to skim or skip pages.
SOOO...
If you need me, I'll be twiddling my thumbs and sopping up my tears as I wait for DARKNESS RISING.
I went into this book with high hopes based on others' reviews. Unfortunately, this book features a well worn plot thinly veneered over romance with interludes of boring graphic sex. I couldn't finish it.

I love a good bit of urban fantasy. A secret world of monsters and magics hidden beneath the real world is a set up for so many good stories and popular television shows. Whether it's Harry Potter, or Buffy The Vampire Slayer, or even The X-Files, the idea that there's more to the world than you can actually see is such an alluring concept that it's one people keep coming back to time and time again. Because of this there's a lot of books that fit into the genre, and sometimes it can be hard to stand out amongst the competition. Sarah L. Blair's Darkness Shifting is a book that I don't think a huge amount of people have heard of, but deserves to stand out amongst books in its genre.
The story follows Sidney Lake, a woman in her mid-twenties who works for a special organisation that investigates and polices paranormal beings and incidents around New York City. It's kind of like The X-Files, but without being seen as a fringe group that's made fun of. Whilst we don't get to see a huge amount of how the organisation works, we get to see Sidney and her colleagues called into police and federal incidents and be treated with respect. In some ways it made me think of S.H.I.E.L.D. during the early stages of the MCU, where you didn't quite know who they were, but they were walking in with special ID's and knew what they were doing so you made way for them because you're way out of your depth.
Joining Sidney is her partner Williams, who might be one of the nicest sidekick characters in one of these books. Sidney is definitely the lead here, it's not Mulder and Scully or Sam and Dean, so don't expect Williams to come into the spotlight too much. But when he is around he's the best kind of support for Sidney there is. He's kind and caring, sweet and funny, and loyal to a fault. And the fact that there isn't any kind of romance or sexual tension between a male and female partnership makes it so much better too. He's the sweet and goofy older brother that everyone would want. Plus his willingness to crack a joke at the most inappropriate moment, and being a wonderful father, made him a character that I not only wanted to see make it out alive, but would actively want to spend some time with.
The previously mentioned sexual tension is instead given over to Sidney's boss, Mitch. A man almost twice her age who recruited her into the organisation years before, he proves to be a good romantic foil. I have to be honest, I'm usually not comfortable with relationships with large age gaps, particularly with much older men. I think that they can sometimes seem slightly predatory, with older men preying on younger and less experienced women. This was not the case here, however. Sidney is such a strong and capable character that I never once got the indication that Mitch might be one of those creepy older guys. Sidney just wouldn't stand for that kind of thing. Instead he's the rock for her to lean on when things get tough.
There are a number of times during the book where Sidney goes through some serious physical and emotional trauma, and each time Mitch is there for her. He doesn't do this to make himself look like the good guy, or use it a pretence to get into her pants. He's doing it because he's a good person. He understands that Sidney is younger than him, and that she might not want to lock herself into a relationship with a man twice her age, so he gives her the space to be who she wants to be and do what she wants to do whilst being there for her the instant she needs him.
The relationship between the two of them is one of the more enjoyable aspects of the book, mainly because it was treated in a very adult way. Often times books that involve romance will put me off a little, particularly if it's too over done. I don't like stories where people are soulmates three days after meeting each other and initially hating each other. This kind of relationship though, one that's evolved over years, where each person in it has thought long and hard about the kind of person they are and what they want out of life feels so much more grounded that I was able to get on board with it much easier.
I won't go into the story too much, as the twisting narrative that packs in the surprises and subverts expectations is one of the best things about the book. That being said, I will talk a little bit about the way that Blair presents the world that she's made.
Going into the book we know nothing about the kinds of creatures that inhabit it, or what the rules are regarding the supernatural. Instead of bombarding the reader with these kinds of facts they're given to us slowly, revealed if and when they become pertinent to the story. We learn werewolves exist when Sidney is called into a crime scene with one. Demons get mentioned when one causes some havoc, and we learn ghosts exist when it comes up in casual conversation.
When you're introducing readers to a new world there's really a few main ways to get them up to speed on how things work. One is to have a completely brand new character who's learning everything fresh and can act as the eyes of the audience. This is similar to Harry learning he's a wizard in the Harry Potter books, where we discover the word alongside him and every new experience for him is one for us. Another way of doing it is to have experienced characters who are used to the world, and the information is given to the readers outside of conversations. Whilst this method can mean that readers get a lot of useful information and background world building it can sometimes feel like an info dump and comes across very stale.
Then there's the approach that Blair took, where we're dropped into the middle of things. When this is done badly readers can feel lost, but in cases like this we're given enough respect to be able to keep up with things and to learn as we go. The characters don't explain the stuff they already know, and we're not given masses of encyclopedia entries on monsters, instead the story presents things to us. That's all. The story provides us with the world in such a way that we don't need the explanations and info dumps because the world just works. This not only speaks volumes for how well crafted the narrative is, but for Blair's ability as an author.
I read the book in one night. I picked it up in the afternoon, put it down once to eat, then kept reading through to the early hours of the morning to finish it. I probably shouldn't have done that, and was actively keeping myself awake to finish it; but the story was so good that I didn't want to wait even those few hours through sleep to find out what happened next.
I don't often use phrases like 'page turner' or 'impossible to put down' because often books aren't like that, even when they're some of the best you've read. But on this occasion I do have to use those words. I stormed through the book because I found it engrossing. I loved the world that Blair was building and the characters she was inhabiting it with. Part of me wishes I had taken longer, just so the experience wouldn't have ended so fast, but there was no way I was going to make myself stop reading and end the fun.
Darkness Shifting is not only a great entry into the Urban Fantasy genre, but an example of how to do the genre right. It excels in every area and left me wanting to read more the moment it was done. I really hope that the next book in the series comes soon, but more than that I really hope that more people discover this absolute gem. So if you've never read this but it sounds like something you'd like please pick it up and give it a chance. Then tell others about it. I'm sure that if hordes of eager fans come to Sarah Blair asking for the next instalment it'll help encourage her to write it, which means I get to read the next book even quicker.
I love, love, love this book. The story is compelling and tight and I hope there'll be more to read from this author and characters soon. It's a fresh take on the monsters that lurk about and the fact that it's set in NYC only makes me love it more. I adore X-Files and loved the nods to that great show. I can see Sidney working with Mulder someday.
The descriptions are rich and enticing and I just want to read more about Sidney and Dimetrius. This is definitely one you'll want to read. I read it cover to cover in one sitting.
I love this book. I love Love LOVE this book!! Recommendations need to be flying out the door, and through all social media platforms! The plot was engaging. The main characters were believable, intelligent, and interesting. I adored the Arthurian snippets. I just wish I had more success with my author internet stalking and had a release date for the next book! I need more!! The sooner to NOW the BETTER!!!
I read an early draft of this book a few years back and cannot wait to read the published version. The story is atmospheric and action packed, its heroine damaged and dangerous.
While a lot of urban fantasy is overly obsessed with the fantastic elements, Darkness Shifting really puts the plot and characters in the foreground, and lets the rest fall into place organically.
A really fun read. I am not always a fan of the paranormal (gets a little "weird" for me sometimes), but their was a real sense of "gosh, what if..." as I read this story. Blair's writing style is fun, funny, dark, imaginative, and fresh and modern. Looking forward to more from Sarah Blair.
Good fun fast moving urban fantasy meets detective novel with a spot of romance thrown in - the plot hums along apace and the characters work very well, so well worth your time.
It was hard not to like this book. It had a fresh approach to werewolves and the supernatural in general, and the right mix of both sexual and emotional tension. The combination of very early history including the idea of a goddess, with the present allowed the plot to work really well because it was kept simple. It gave the plot a believable edge. It is the writing which carries this though. There is a nice easy flow, some well-rounded characters that are very appealing, and the complex romantic situation maintained interest without any unnecessary angst, and as the situation intensified it also caught our emotional attention. This was all writing style. I thoroughly enjoyed this and if I have a complaint it is that the second book is not out yet.
Sidney Lake is a unique New York City investigator. Her job requires that she investigate crimes of the paranormal variety, ones that involve ghosts, poltergeists, witches, and the like. However, when a mutilated body turns up in the subway, Sidney is shocked to discover that a species she had long thought was extinct may not be extinct after all. Solving this case forces Sidney to confront painful truths about her own past and about the harsh reality of her parents’ murder so many years ago. Following this thread also leads Sidney to Dimitrius, a man who is much more than he seems and to whom Sidney feels an inexplicable connection. In tackling this case, Sidney will have to face her greatest fears, as well as the truth about her own destiny.
One of the best things about Darkness Shifting is Sidney Lake herself. This character is the definition of tough. From the very beginning, she establishes herself as a character who won’t let anything or anyone sideline her or silence her. She’s resilient, she’s intelligent, and she’s tenacious. She also loves fiercely, even if there are only a handful of people in her life that she lets get close to her. Her parents’ murder has undoubtedly shaped who she is, but she’s far from being an abrasive character who shuts everyone out. I liked her scrappiness and her courageousness, but I also loved her softer side.
“I don’t want to be a monster”
“It takes a lot more than claws and fur to make someone a monster.”
That’s not to say Sidney is perfect, because she does make mistakes, but that just makes her feel all the more real. All in all, the complexity of Sidney kept me invested in her story. I also appreciated that she’s aware of the supernatural forces existing around her; we don’t have to read about her discovering the existence of magical creatures and we aren’t forced to spend time while she comes to grips with the knowledge. Since she already knows, we get to hit the ground running and get to the action and the romance that much quicker.
The image in the subway came back to her. The ears and the fur, that long tongue and the mouth full of huge sharp teeth, reminded her too much of what stalked through her nightmares.
I also found myself fascinated with the mythology in Sarah Blair’s world. This book is so much more than your average paranormal fantasy/sci-fi book. The addition of Arthurian legend into the narrative was a refreshing take on the genre. I love that this isn’t just a book about werewolves, demons, and other supernatural creatures. It dives into the history of King Arthur and other characters from the legend, and Blair weaves these elements into the story flawlessly. I’m always excited about a story when its mythology is as intricate as it is in Darkness Shifting.
“I’m sort of an Arthurian geek.”
“How did I not know this about you?”
Williams shrugged and suddenly found his coffee very interesting. “It was more of a phase I went through in high school.”
Dimitrius was also a refreshing love interest. There’s enough mystery to his character to keep you intrigued about his background, but I liked how he was pretty honest with Sidney. He wasn’t one of those characters who keeps everything to himself and refuses to tell the heroine things that she deserves to know. He was respectful, charming, and definitely sexy. His and Sidney’s relationship was my favorite one in the book.
“How did you feel when you first saw me? Before we ever touched.” Sidney thought back to the way the firelight illuminated his hair. The way he moved. The look in his eyes that made chills run down her spine. “That’s what’s real.”
Williams, Sidney’s partner, was another awesome character and a source of much humor and amusement throughout the story. His comments and his awe at the even crazier-than-usual things happening around him, as well as his moments of geekiness, always made me laugh.
“Is this heaven? Did I get eaten by the shifter zombie and go to heaven? I think I’m dead. I have to be dead because this is heaven.” “You’re not dead,” Sidney said. “Be cool.”
There is somewhat a love triangle in this book between Sidney, Dimitrius, and Mitch, Sidney’s boss. While I normally shy away from love triangles, I couldn’t find it in me to dislike Mitch. He’s just all around a good guy, totally head over heels for Sidney, and he truly wants what’s best for her. Plus, Sidney didn’t really spend the book being super torn between these guys. She remained pretty loyal to one guy and I respected that about her. Even if you’re not a huge fan of love triangles, there is something about this one that sets it apart from others.
Overall, this series is off to a wonderfully strong start! It’s got a distinct and relatable cast of characters, rich mythology, intense action, and great twists. The overarching mystery of what happened to Sidney’s parents and how she fits into what’s going on in the city is intriguing and suspenseful, and there are moments of heartbreak that add weight to the story. Oh, and of course there’s romance (and heat!) to spice things up. The ending both satisfies the reader and teases greater things to come. I can’t wait to see where this goes next.

Loved this book! I thought the mystery kept me turning the page the entire time, and I loved Sydney and following her like a ghost throughout the story. Paranormal books are not ones I read often, but I loved this one and need more books like this on my shelf. It kept me on the edge of my seat, and I fell in love with the characters and the mystery! I would definitely recommend it! *i received a free copy in exchange for my honest review and opinion*
I enjoyed Darkness Shifting so much. Blair has taken urban fantasy to remake the legend of King Arthur into a modern legend. What I love so much about this book is how the characters always remain true to themselves. Even with magic trying to force a path, the MC, Sidney, refuses to take its crap. If you're looking for a strong female lead who refuses to be anyone's princess, I recommend this novel.
I loved so many things about this book-The X-Files/Supernatural vibe, the clever way the author wove in bits about King Arthur, and how the plot kept me guessing. But the characters, THE CHARACTERS, were so freaking lovable. Renny and Williams were top-notch. There were parts that had me wheezing because they were so endearing and real. Excellent job! Can't wait to read more from this author!
This is a new author for me. I enjoyed the twist and turns presented in the storyline. If you like a n adventure in the world of the paranormal this book is for you. There was a new twist to the plot through out cover to cover. I highly recommend the series.
This book deserves all the praise. The plot is tight, the emotional arcs are gripping, and the paranormal twists keep you guessing. Just when you think you’ve figured it out, another layer is revealed. I need this as a series Sidney Lake is too good for just one book
Even though I LOVE watching Sci-Fi, I've never really been into reading Sci-Fi... until this book. Darkness Shifting: Tides of Darkness Book One is a PERFECT blend of the X-Files and Castle mixed with a little bit of King Arthur mythology. Sidney is such a great character! Her past consists of the tragedy of her parents' murders and being raised by a heartless grandfather. She struggled and continues to struggle with this past. However, this dark past is what makes her such a great paranormal detective and such a relatable character. The twists and turns in this are mind boggling. It has the perfect balance between action, sci-fi, and romance. I recommend this book to everyone! It had me on the edge of my seat the entire time. I even read it while I was vacationing in Disney World...
Honestly I don't generally care for stories involving paranormal creatures, but I have to admit that Darkness Shifting was a compelling read. Sarah Blair has mastered the art of beautiful prose in this dark paranormal romance, not to mention put a few interesting twists on some monster-classics.
The thing I love the most in Blair's writing is her determination to avoid cliches. Most paranormal fiction follows the same formula: 1. Heroine is living an average existence in normal hum-drum world, 2. Heroine meets someone mysterious or witnesses something dramatic, 3. Heroine realizes not everything in her world is all that it seems, 4. Heroine discovers she has magical powers, and finally 5. Heroine discovers she herself is something amazingly powerful/special. From the first chapter of Blair's novel, this formula is totally shattered. When we meet our protagonist Sidney, she is already living in a world rich with every paranormal creature imaginable (except for vampires--thank goodness!), and guess what? She is already kicking ass and taking names. While Sidney still has a lot to discover about herself, we don't have to suffer through the cliche of her learning about the world she lives in. You will not find any wide-eyed innocent damsels in this book. Instead, you get plunged right into a world full of all the creatures you read about in fairy tales--everything from werewolves to leprechauns--all meshed into a modern-day, urban backdrop.
Another cliche Blair manages to avoid is the oh-so-common LOVE TRIANGLE. Have I mentioned that I hate love triangles? HATE them. The funny thing is, Darkness Shifting actually does feature two love interests: Sweet and lovable Mitch, and the mysterious Dimitrius. However, Blair handles this issue with such finesse that you really can't even consider it a love triangle. Sidney never goes through the whole "Oh no, two beautiful men love me, whatever am I going to do??" *fans self* conundrum. Rather, Sidney's love and loyalty to one of them is very evident...and quite beautiful, really. It's so refreshing to see two men care so deeply for a protagonist, but without any angst or negative feelings toward each other.
Blair is definitely a character-driven author, as her characters throughout the novel are strong, distinguished, and loveable. I had a particular soft spot for Sidney's partner, William. He is sweet, dorky and adorable, and provides the perfect comic-relief right when you need it the most. And I love love LOVE Mitch. So many love-interests are drop dead gorgeous, and while Mitch has his attractive attributes (i.e. toned chest), other details such as his lack of hair and his age make him so relatable. Also, the age thing. Sheer brilliance. Why does every relationship in novels have to be perfect and mainstream? I love it that Blair breaks this mold by throwing in a detail that might make some readers uncomfortable.
The final cliche-breaker is who Sidney and Dimitrius turn out to be. SO NOT WHAT I EXPECTED. I don't want to give away any spoilers, so I'll just say it's like paranormal meets fairy tale legend and it is totally unique.
Minus .5 a star because of some minor formatting issues with the Kindle version that occasionally distract from the story. Otherwise, a spellbinding, masterfully woven tale for the sophisticated devours of urban fantasy. I look forward to following Sidney's adventures into Darkness Rising.

Loved they way the author brought in several mythologies and wove them together to make a plausible explanation. The characters were sympathetic and the story great
I'm officially hooked on this series. It may be an urban fantasy, but it has a bit of everything. Romance, suspense, fantasy, an arthurian element, and the buddy cop banter fitting a crime drama.
Sidney is strong, real, and a new favorite FMC. There is an intense ending that will have you reaching for the next in the series; ready to binge. Sarah Blair is a new stand out author, and I'll read anything she writes. I would highly recommend this series!
I always like to read a scary book around Halloween. Sarah L. Blair’s book, Darkness Shifting, fits the bill. It reminds me a lot of The X-files, which I absolutely love. Yet, she manages to tie in something else I love: King Arthur. Just on this basis, this book was a complete win.
The characters were developed well and I felt like I was part of their little group, trying to solve the mysteries. There were a lot of plot twists and turns that left me wanting more. And I will warn you: there is a lot of blood, gore, and violence. If you aren’t comfortable reading that, then please refrain from this one.
But guess what? There is also KISSING. Lots of kissing and hot passionate sessions in showers and beds. They are well done, and make me want to yell, “get it girl!”
I can’t emphasize enough how much I loved this book. It set me in the mood for Halloween and provided just the right amount of hot romance I needed. I truly can’t wait until the next book is released, and continues the story of Sidney Lake.
New to me author. This is a strong, well written debut. Grabbed me from the beginning... lost me a little with King Arthur but I fell back in. Looking forward for more from this author.

I absolutely loved this book! The story had me in its grip right from the start and kept me turning the pages all the way through. The characters really came alive and the book offers everything I could have asked for: a great heroine, action, humour, and romance. I can't wait for the next book in the series to be published!
This is a book I just couldn't put down! The story line is compelling and the author's style imbeds you right into it reminding me of J.K.Rowlings and the Harry Potter series!
This is a book I just couldn't put down! The storyline is compelling and the author imbeds you right into it. If you loved J.K.Rowling's Harry Potter series you'll enjoy this book immensely!
A great read, there are some great reviewers on here - I'm not one of them. I read the book really quickly because I was enjoying it. A fab easy read - can't wait for the next one. If I had one regret, it would be that I found this book too early and the next ones are not written yet. Can also see a prequel...
