Owen Lipke is looking for adventure. When he hears about a ranch in the Muskokas catering to kinky men who don’t want to settle for backroom amateurs, he signs up in a second.
At the Braided Crop Ranch, Owen finds what he’s looking for: A sex positive space with safety protocols and Doms (trainers) who know their business. And a stable full of well-behaved ponyboys to prove it.
Owen thinks his trainer, Kamal, is hot as hell but finds being a ponyboy isn’t as intuitive as he expected. As he struggles to learn the basics of equine pet play under the firm hand of his trainer he finds himself falling for the older, experienced, man.
And perhaps Kamal is developing a thing for the young, adventurous newcomer. But there are rules at the ranch about fraternizing with staff. And Owen wonders if it’s wise to fall in love with the pragmatic trainer who unravels him layer by layer to expose his deepest needs and most secret proclivities.
But perhaps wisdom is overrated. And maybe the rewards of adventure are only achieved when you abandon caution and take a huge leap of faith.
Queer erotic romance. Incendiary encounters, stealthy romance, multiple genres. AE Lister is a Canadian non-binary/gender fluid author with a vivid imagination and a head full of unique and interesting characters. They write consent-based kink with a dash of romance.
So, like with book one, there were bits I really liked and times when I was very frustrated with this book.
Owen is an utter charmer, he's delightful, secure in knowing the kind of Domination he wants and perfectly willing to stretch his comfort boundaries.
Kamal is more of an enigma and was one of my biggest frustration points. We don't get his POV, only Owen's, and I don't think really enough information was given for me to get any kind of a reading on him at all, other than surface level.
He's a ponyboy trainer, he likes to Dominate, he's Muslim (but again that seemed only as a nod to him being an unusual ethnicity for a BDSM Dom because "religion" rather than having any actual bearing on the plot narrative.
The ending, like book one, felt rushed and overly sudden.
I did think there was a bit of contradiction about how the ranch was founded versus what was said in book one. That may be a case of the anonymous ranch owner (mentioned in book one) just handing it over to Andrew and Kamal to establish. The way it read here was that the ranch was theirs.
However, there were also some great bits. The ponyplay, as in book one, is exceptionally well done, as was the brief switch into puppy play. The sense of place is also done well, the ranch and its setting is very easy to visualise, as are the other ponyboys on site with Owen.
The ponyboy scenes are all intense, moreso with Owen and Kamal as they do go deep into humiliation and objectification play, and I really loved the threesome with one of Kamal's old friends who visits the ranch.
So, overall, a good read but I slightly preferred the set-up of book one as I felt that narrative was more rounded out.
#ARC kindly received from the author in return for an honest and unbiased review
BDSM fans, and lovers of kink: Ponyboy should be at the top of your TBR shelf. AE Lister writes one of the all-time hottest puppy play scenes I’ve ever read, and the ponyboy training scenes are delectable. It’s not all sex though, AE Lister explores this ponyboy’s character in great depth. This is a story of soul searching and exploration, and one man’s journey toward uncovering the person he’s meant to be.
Owen has a notion that there’s something missing in his life. He's craving to experience true domination, and a safe place to explore his desires. This leads him to the Braided Crop Ranch. He knows if this doesn’t work for him he can walk away, but hopefully learning about pony play will be a step in the right direction.
AE Lister does a marvelous job of expressing Owen’s emotions throughout the story. From the moment he steps foot on the ranch, through his interactions with the folks at the BCR, we experience each sensation, reaction, and response with him. The sex scenes are gorgeously sensual, and we’re treated to stunning descriptions of Owen’s physical responses. Ponyboy is seriously smoking hot.
When Owen meets his trainer, Kamal, there’s an immediate spark between them. The momentum builds steadily, and their scenes are intimate and emotional. We get everything from Owen’s point of view, and I found this makes the interactions between Owen and Kamal that much more intense.
There’s marvelous detail about the early weeks of Owen’s training session, but I’d have happily read a hundred more pages to get the stuff we don’t see *wink*! Plus the final weeks wrap up so quickly, and I would have loved a few more pages of the epilogue.
At the end of Ponyboy Owen has come to a crossroads in his life. Knowing he doesn’t want to return to his old life, he’s faced with making some difficult decisions. He has no idea what’s going on in Kamal’s mind for their future; and Adam, the ranch owner, has presented some appealing options which could offer Owen a brand new life. I’d have loved to get deeper into Owen’s thought process as he really works this all out.
Ponyboy is an absolutely wonderful addition to AE Lister’s BCR series, and I hope we see more of Owen and Kamal some day. The final book in the series, Ranch Boss, is due out October 2021. We’re getting Adam’s story and I can hardly wait!
Thank you to the author, NetGalley, and NineStar Press for the ARC of Ponyboy, this is my honest review
4.5 stars Owen is bored with the current BDSM scenes he has, can’t seem to find the right experienced Dom. A friend tells him about The Braided Crop Ranch, a kinky BDSM ranch, they train men to pony boys, after reading about it online, he decided to subscribe
We get a view of his preparations for his six-week leave, his arrival at the ranch, how he gets an introduction to all the other people, the ones who work there and the ones like Owen, who were there to explore their fetish. Looking around his eyes stopped at a tall, dark-haired man with a black beard, what a beautiful man!. It seems it’s his lucky day, this man named Kamal will be his trainer.
There are restrictions, rules to follow. No fucking with the pony boys, play around is allowed, but no penetration. The attraction is instant and strong, even though Kamal is super professional he also seems to struggle with his feelings for Owen and the rules about fraternizing, luckily he has some equipment to use on Owen. These events are highly sensual and delicious, all wonderfully pictured.
Owen came for some adventure and got much, much more. Being guided and praised by Kamal was exceptional, Kamal pushed him to the edge and kept him from falling, quite emotional. Watching them under these circumstances was extraordinary.
There is something special growing between them, it’s passionate, sensual, and strong, only, what will happen when the training is done.
Kamal was such a great Dom, even me as a reader wanted to please him. He’s highly skilled as Dom, controlled, confident, experienced, patient, he was a sight for the eyes. The author did a great job explaining all the equipment and the process of the training. Also, the interactions were wonderful and emotional. What I missed was the view from Kamal, even though the author explained what was going on with him, I wanted to feel his strong mindset and emotions more. It was all told from Owen’s point of view. In comparison with the widely way the story was written, the end felt a bit rushed and came way too fast, I yearned for a prolonged end. I enjoyed this narrative, it was innovative, I loved the protagonists and all their interactions very!.
Owen knows what he’s looking for and what he wants. He wants to be dominated. He’s told about Braided Crop Ranch; there’s he finds what he needs. Kamal is his trainer, he’s older and hot as hades. They have an immediate chemistry and connection, lots of spark! Loved the puppy play scene! loved their story and cannot wait for the next! I am voluntarily leaving a review form an advanced copy that I received. My reviews are solely based on my thoughts and opinions.
I was hoping for a steamy romance book. Unfortunately this wasn’t it. I was a bit bored with the story. Each scene of play was very detailed but there was no emotions behind it. So I couldn’t believe the love story between the two guys. I feel bad so I’m giving an extra star just because of it. I received this ARC from the publisher and Netgalley for my honest review.

Having enjoyed the first book in this series, I was keen to read this one too and I wasn’t disappointed!
Owen is living, but only just. He craves more, and the local to him kink clubs aren’t offering him what he needs. Then he hears of the Braided Crop Ranch. Is it too good to be true? Let’s see!
Owen’s assigned trainer is the enviable Kamal. He is everything Owen dreamed of, and more. For his part, Kamal loves his job at the ranch, training and guiding a new pony boy every few weeks. But Owen is different. Kamal wants things he most certainly cannot, and should not have. But there are still opportunities. To touch, to master, to make him need. Kamal’s friends on the staff can see a difference in him, but poor Owen cannot trust the feelings that are developing. Could Kamal ever want Owen for real?
The story is thoroughly engaging and fantastically sexy and kinky (naturally) and the characters were warm and I was rooting for them from the outset. The conflict between the characters and their need for each other and the fear for the future was so real I was totally invested in them, and was joyous at the HEA.
Highly recommended.
I received a free copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Oh, Owen, you delicious man, you. Owen is a man who is searching for something more in his life. Something that can fulfill a need for him. On a casual mention from a hook up, he hears about the Braided Crop Ranch. What follows is the story of Owen finding his missing pieces.
I really liked the dynamic that Owen and Kamal had. It seemed that Kamal knew exactly what Owen needed and then gave it to him. Owen was as strong willed character that was instantly likable. I liked that he didn’t bend to every whim of Kamal and showed that he had a backbone. The pony play was beautifully written and described, as were the feelings it evoked in Owen. This sense of belonging and fulfillment easily translated from the page. This booked definitely packed a heat level that I loved, but one must be advised that the MC does have intimate moments with other characters in the book.
I genuinely with we got to see Kamal’s POV. He seemed like such a complex character underneath it all. With the one rule about trainers and ponyboys not being allowed to go all the way, I imagine there was an internal struggle going on for him as his feelings for Owen grew. I would have liked to read about the struggle. I was also slightly disappointed that we didn’t get to read the scene where Owen and Kamal finally do go all the way, but I also undemand that the things Kamal and Owen did together throughout the book were far more intimate than actual penetration.
This was a book that kept my interest in more ways than one and I really enjoyed it from start to finish. I look forward to spending more time at BCR in the future.
** I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.**. I admit that I requested this book partly out of homage to my favorite Ponyboy (Curtis) and partly out of shear curiosity. I really expected it to be one of those reads that end up being WTF? Boy was I wrong. My experience with pony play was limited to Real Sex on HBO (?). I may have seen it briefly in a movie somewhere, but it was always presented in an “OMG, can you believe these people kind of way?” I admit to thinking it was one step too far. Although, I am much more live and let live, this was still something I could not fathom. However, this book was so good. The way this author takes you right into this world with plenty of showing but not in either a militant look at this or a voyueristic giggly way. I feel like I have an understanding why this works for people. I loved these characters. I loved watching Owens journey. He knows there is something missing in his sex life. He’s tried D/s but he has not found a fit. He hears about a ranch that specializes in pony play and something in his brain lights up. He applies to go and a last minute cancellation sends him quickly. There is an immediate click with his assigned trainer, Kamal. The seriousness that this environment has for pony play is apparent. I loved seeing all of the prep and care taken with the pony boys. Boundaries are discussed and respected. Safe words or other cues to pause or stop are respected. In ways I never expected, this book really worked for me.
Owen Lipke (pony, 27) & Kamal Salib (trainer). (Owen is the pov character.)
We return to the ranch with Owen, one of the newest batch of ponies. The other 5: Jake, Biskane, Miles, Andrei, and Sam. It’s a year after the first book, summer again. Jensen is strictly working as a trainer in training with Kamal, his stable hand position taken by Carrie.
Owen is the pov character. Like Jensen when he first started, Owen comes to the ranch with fresh eyes. He had been craving a stronger hand from a Dom, but had never ventured into ponyplay or any kind of petplay. Owen lucked out in falling into a slot less than a week after finding out the ranch existed. Bypassing the waiting list because of a last minute cancellation.
Owen falls for Kamal hard and fast, and Kamal seems unusually smitten with his newest pony, more so than even Luke. Since Jensen is helping out there is lots of talking over Owen’s head as Kamal gives Jensen guidance. And Owen eats up the objectification of being the subject of their discussion, yet not part of their discussion.
When Owen comes up to say “hi” during their picnic dinner, Kamal impulsively instructs him to kneel, and Owen falls to his knees. Owen pushes all of Kamal’s buttons, to the point where the no intercourse rule is quite the challenge. Kamal keeps Owen in his room overnight with a puppyplay scene, where Owen eagerly eats up everything Kamal throws at him.
Kamal is honest with Adam about his attraction to his ponyboy. Adam asks only that Kamal waits till Owen’s visit has officially concluded before breaking that last barrier.
We see a good deal of Jensen on stage in this book. And when his lovers come for a visit, we get a nice juicy scene between Owen and Luke, early in Owen’s visit.
Enjoyed returning to the ranch, but I — by far — favored Jensen’s book. Probably the switch aspect.
This book was on my radar from the moment I saw the title and the cover! And it got recommended me many, many times... so when I got the chance to read the ARC, I couldn't say yes fast enough LOL.
But on a sirious tone, holymoly! What have I been missing out on? And this book is the second in the series! WOW! I knew that after reading Various Persuasions, that the author is now on my auto-buy & one-click list, but this book just made me sure about that decision. Now I only need two thing: the first and the next book in the series hahaha
The story is *surprise-surprise* playing around pony-play and BDSM elements. I love everything pet-play and BDSM related, so it wasn't a question that this book will be right up my alley, but never in a million years have I thought this will be this amazing. I mean, come on! It takes place on an actual ranch! And it was so hot, I have no actual words to describe this journey.
The storyline, the characters and the banter between them... the romance and everything pony, just WOW. My jaw is on the floor. There's just no words how beautiful and awesome this story is.
Owen and Kamal were so perfect and I loved the instant chemistry they had for the first time they saw each other. And I loved how open minded Owen was, everything from singing up for this event to get into the shower with one of the guys while still pining after Kamal. And how he was in pony gear, just WOW. I need more characters like Owen. And Kamal, haha, it was a bit funny how he got into this situation. We can call this story a workplace romance too, because Kamal was sort of Owen's boss in this situation. Oh and I loved how strict they were about the rules - no actual fucking, but anything other than that was okay. And how hot it was. HOW! HOT! Phew.
Really, really enjoyed the book, and the surprise threesome at the end was a great addition too.
Highly recommend this book, but only for open minded people.
Low angst pony play fun! I absolutely adore the thought and detail that is put into the creation of the Braided Crop Ranch, or BCR as it’s often referred to in the book. I’ve read a few puppy play scenes here and there but this author is the first I’ve come across that not only features pony play but puts such love into introducing it to her readers as well as the MC’s. You feel like you’re right there experiencing it with them. Owen is not new to the kink scene but knows something is missing, he needs something more. He finds his way to the BCR and by luck of the draw is placed with Kamar which we know from book 1 is the most strict of the trainers and sought after. I know as a reader I’m always going to fall for the strict one so I was thrilled this was the match up. They are both drawn to each other and things quickly become more personal than just trainer and pony boy. I love the little details like Owen rolling the bit around in his mouth with the occasional foot stomp. He’s an amazing pony boy! There is some puppy play but I admit that is not my favorite, I was ready to get back to the stables. There is some sharing with sexual play, as there was in the first book. I’d like to see Biskane get a story. If you’re looking for a light, low-angst read and want to escape to some kinky stables for bit, this is the book for you.
This story had everything I enjoy: likeble characters, great MCs, hot kinks, smut, and so many different feelings.... not to mention the plot development that was so good. Important to say that it shows on page one MC having sex with other people (prior to the couple coming together), threesomes and sharing (amazing, hot sharing scene! you don't want to miss it), but NOT cheating, and a great HEA.
I had really liked book 1 - Stable Hand, but Ponyboy is even better, I think that when you read the first and learn about the Ranch and the pony play (which was new to me), it builds up and prepares you for the second story. That, and the fact that we get to revisit Jensen, Adam, Lorraine and, of course Kamal! I wish we had more of Adam, though, his inputs on book 1 were so good.
Owen was a great character! He may have seemed lost in the first chapter, but that is not true at all. He knew what he wanted, what he needed and he jumped head first in the Ranch scene. He wasn't a pushover and Kamal knew how to give him exactly what he needed, it was an amazing dynamics.
*I read an ARC provided by the author and this is my honest review*
3.5, rounded up I actually enjoyed this one more than the first book. I don't know if it was because it was from the perspective of someone already involved in kink, so there were no repeated "omg wtf" moments that Jensen had, or if we just had a lot more time to witness the trust and chemistry between Kamal and Owen. I just felt more invested in these two.
Still kinky af, still hot af, still relatively light on substance compared to the tons of hot kink. But still something that really hits the spot when you're in the mood for it! We also got to see more of Jensen, and even Noah and Luke briefly. I felt that the epilogue was abrupt -- I think I actually would have liked it better if it just ended at the previous chapter -- but overall, a fun, scorching hot read.
I enjoyed this book! Both of the main characters are sweet and snarky. The story is low angst and the book is occasionally laugh out loud funny. Kamal says Owen has “ the soul of a child in the body of a full-grown man” and that’s a perfect description. While spending the day as a puppy, Owen had the following though that made me giggle snort. “ I was supposed to be his pup, so I acted like one. I climbed over top of him and rubbed my face against his shoulder, licked his chin, turned around to wiggle in his lap and wished I could have farted in his face.”
Beautifully written, sexy, and intriguing. Kamal is a heart stopper and Owen is absolutely amazing. I loved watching Owen’s journey as he finds and accepts himself. Sexy, funny and incredibly hot, I was pulled into the story and couldn’t put it down! Can’t wait for more from the Braided Crop Ranch!!
Another fun, sexy novel that is an excellent follow-up to the world we visit in Stable Hand. Lister hamstrings themself a bit in using only one narrative point of view for this series, I think, because I ended up wanting more from Kamal's end of things. Otherwise, this is still a wonderful book that evoked much more emotion than I expected.
This series just gets hotter and hotter! Kamal is everything you could want in a dom and so much more. As for Owen, I adore his passion for kink exploration. This book is wonderfully written and I can't wait to see this series continue.
Wow! I absolutely loved this book and I have no hesitation in recommending it! Delicious kinky perfection. I don't want to give spoilers for this book, I want to urge readers to dive in and follow Owen as he adventures into the world of pony boys.
What whirlwind romance for two characters who weren’t looking at all. Big ups an downs and a little bit of stage fright. But it all works out for the best don’t cha know.
Just like the first book, the ending felt rushed. However, there is actually a short epilogue in this story, so maybe we will get more in the next book.
Not as enthralling as the first book. After awhile, the storyline between Kamal and Owen felt played out. Not quite sure why the author bothered with the epilogue which felt like an after thought.
Pony play, impact, three way mmm, puppy play, forced orgasms
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I wanted to like this but it was boring and there was a huge emotional disconnect. It was like someone wrote this and didn’t put any care into it, just wrote the bare minimum to tell a story. You just through the motions and read what happens and that’s about it. All show, no tell.
Worth the read for a kink that's not commonly explored.
Good book indeed. What was missing was a final love scene where there are no rules holding them back. The end of the book felt rushed but the character development was pretty good. I enjoyed this book more than the first.

Ponyboy (The Braided Crop Ranch, 02) by A.E. Lister ★★★★★ 300 Pages 1st person, one character POV Content Warning: pony play, puppy play, as well as consensual sharing, humiliation, degradation, and D/s aspects of BDSM
Ponyboy takes place the summer after Stable Hand, continuing the story of the BCR and it's members. Only, this time, we see the ranch from the perspective of a new pony, rather than the stable hand that Jensen showed in Book 1. And that is a huge difference.
Book 1 taught us how the ranch functioned, in terms of legalities, behind the scenes, and their rules and processes involved in making the ponies feel welcome and loved. Book 2 goes more into the emotional and mental challenge of changing your mindset from regular human working a day-to-day life, to a ponyboy learning how to be the best pony ever.
Owen, the MC, is bored with his life. His extensive forays into kink have led him nowhere good, and he's sulking after a recent break-up that was inevitable. When a hook-up tells him about a pony ranch in the middle of nowhere, he's instantly intrigued and makes an impulse decision to investigate. Along with bestie, Tamara, Owen delves into the BCR website and all it offers, submits an application...and fate takes a hand. There's an instant spot on the next session, due to a cancellation.
Owen is off to the Braided Crop Ranch. With no experience of animal-play, and no idea how his six weeks there will change him forever. He's sweet, charming, a little feisty, and I love how his mental confusion over being a pony really shines throughout his sessions with Kamal. Yet, although he sometimes acts out, sometimes misbehaves, he wants to do well, and when he really can't abide something, he's not afraid to use his safeword or put his foot down. And Kamal isn't afraid to let him.
The chemistry and dynamic between Kamal and Owen is palpable, bursting off the page. Though they can't break the BCR rules, there is a lot of action between them that is often far more enticing and evocative than what could happen if they broke the rules. I loved seeing Owen break down in front of Kamal, and how eagerly and sweetly Kamal took care of him. I loved that they leaned on each other, bickered and bantered, but ultimately understood each other.
~
The usual cast are all back, with the exception of the ponyboys from Book 1. This book offers a new group of six recruits, including Owen, and effectively shows how each have a different experience, different backgrounds, and each want different things from their stay. Each character is interesting in their own way, providing support and friendship for Owen, who is a bit of a lost boy, mentally. While Owen is adorable, he's lost in life and looking to expand his kink-experience, while also being obstinate, in a far more playful way than Luke ever was. Though there are some small similarities in their personalities.
Jensen is back, but training under Kamal as a trainer at the BCR. He's still with Luke and Noah, who make a small appearance. Adam is, as ever, enigmatic and wonderful. Connor was briefly on page, as were some of the trainers. I loved seeing more of the next cast, as well.
While this is Book 2 in the series, it could effectively stand on its own as a solo novel. Though far more enjoyable knowing the story of Book 1, there's nothing here too heavily relying on Book 1 that you would have to have read it first.
I can't say too much about the plot itself, because I feel I'd be wading deep into spoiler territory, but...I loved Owen. I loved seeing a new side of Kamal. I loved that the story explored another side to the ranch, that I hadn't realised I was missing from Book 1. I love that Adam will get his story next. And I love that though each book ends with a HFN, I always feel hopeful and confident they're on their way to a HEA.
I can't wait for Book 3.

Favourite Quotes
“I whimpered at the sheer vulnerability I felt, knowing he could see into my soul just like I'd suspected. He knew me. He saw me. And he wouldn't let me deny myself.”
I really loved Owen! He was spunky and fun and his love for adventure along with his yearning for that perfect Dom made him a unique and special character. I definitely saw why Kamal fell for him. He had fire and spirit and determination...all things that Kamal loved in his ponies. It was time for Kamal’s adventurous spirit to meet Owen. When you meet the one, you just know.
I loved this BCR story a bit more than Stable Hand simply because Owen just seemed to tick all my boxes and Kamal’s dominance was HOT!! I loved how Owen was just able to let go and finally find himself. I loved how Kamal took control and how fierce yet gentle he was. He told Jensen that the ponyboys came to the ranch to find that dominance that they yearned for but also needed the caring and tenderness as well and Kamal was a perfect example of that.
The only downside is that the story couldn’t go on forever. I loved these two and the epilogue wasn’t nearly enough for me!! I want more!!
