I like Slaine and ABC Warriors so I wanted to like this. But I just can't get behind the hackneyed effort. The writing gives a nod to current cultural terms from the social media age but otherwise there are absolutely no new ideas here. The artwork is quite good but badly let down by uninspired writing. I think there was meant to be some humour in some of it but really it felt like 1980s stand up.

Spacewarp represents Pat Mills return to the role of editor and lead creator in a comic. Long time fans of 2000AD will be aware that Mills was the original editor, designer and wrote all the stories for the first ten or so issues of the comic.

The six stories all written by Mills, so if you aren't a fan of his very distinctive style of writing then this comic isn't really for you. However, in 2000AD where I feel he's a bit tired of trying to get a more mileage out of ABC Warriors and Slaine these stories all buzz with energy, verve and the determination to get as many ideas as possible over in the limited page space.
The stories :
Slayer - Beautiful art by James Newell and a story that probably has a very Nemesis the Warlock feel to it.
Jurassic Punx - Bruno Stahl is an excellent artist drawing dinosaurs, guns and action in a fast paced sort of fish out of water situation.
SF1: A good future war story is always something to look forward to. The art by Ade Hughes makes an excellent start but gets a bit confusing towards the end, possibly because so many ideas are being thrown at the reader. I think this would have been better split over two issues or double the page length.
Futant - Plenty of action, intriguing story and probably the most classic 2000AD/Action art of the whole comic.
Xecutioners - Interesting space bounty hunter type story with probably the most modern looking art of the whole comic. I would have liked to see it in colour though.
Hellbreaker - my least favourite possibly because of the contemporary story setting and the art didn't appeal to me.
Speer & Loathing(?) - a bit Cthuluish and therefore I found I couldn't really get into the cast of this particular story

This comic is completely let down by the boring cover though. A cover is supposed to sell the book and four characters that I have no previous connection to just standing around simply does not do it.
One of the points the comic raised that surprised me most is that I have become so used to seeing colour art that interestingly I found I missed having some stories in colour despite thinking how much I would like to see a back to basics 2000AD type comic. The lack of colour may not be appealing to the target demographic that Mills is aiming this comic at
The other thing that really bugged me was that my in copy (and it may not be a problem on other people's copies - I believe this was printed on demand by Amazon) everything, including the cover, has been printed at a slight slant from the centre fold dropping about 1mm to the edge. I note that the ISBN barcode on the back cover is level though. It might seem nit picky but this a printing error like this feels sloppy and amateurish, and I'm afraid it loses one star for this because at nearly ten pounds for this comic it's simply not acceptable

I'd recommend as a curiousity read and I think having different writers come in and pick up the stories to take them forward would be a good idea - there's a lot of Mills to absorb in one go here. I'll probably get the next issue based on potential of the whole thing.

Very disappointing, I was expecting so much more from Pat Mills. The stories are clichéd, and read like someone who is trying very hard to recreate 1990s 2000ad but doesn't quite understand why it was successful. The artwork is mostly poor, although to be fair it does look like colour art which has been reproduced in black and white, so it may look better in a colour format. None of the characters are memorable or original, with one character being a rip off of Mills' own Torquemada.
If this was an anthology by newcomers it would be relatively impressive, if still not particularly good, but coming from such a titan (no pun intended) of the comics world it's surprisingly amateurish.

Excellent start

This is fantastic new comic that I believe achieves the very difficult task of appealing to kids and adults equally. Pat Mills is one of the very best comic writers Britain has ever produced and his new team of artists make this a sure fire winner for me. I hope it continues!

Uncle Pat does it again!

What can i say? Pat and Lisa have assembled and developed a fantastic team and comic. It sets a very high bar indeed! The artwork and storytelling is superb...it takes a few reads to fully take it all in (try the guided view of you can, it really is a different and exciting way of reading comics). So top marks to the Spacewarp team!!

Get Warped!

Spacewarp is the best thing to happen to British comics since 2000AD (which is obviously still great) and Warrior (RIP). Pat Mills has successfully captured all of the energy, fun and warped sensibilities of the great strips of the past (far too many to list here but head over to downthetubes.net if you're interested). But there is nothing remotely nostalgic about Spacewarp - it has arrived at exactly the right time. The Spacewarp concept /framing device works brilliantly and is open enough to allow for the future strips to head off in new and intriguing directions. The art is consistently excellent throughout - a compelling case for what can be achieved when artists own their own creations. I can't remember a time when I have looked forward to the next issue of any publication as much. Highly recommended!
