If the radiation doesn't kill you, the survivors will....
Dakota and Logan continue their treacherous journey to escape the city, but danger threatens at every turn. They must avoid uncontrollable fires, unstable buildings, and deadly fallout contamination.
Dakota knows of a place to ride out the coming chaos - a safe house deep in the Everglades. If Logan helps her rescue her sister, she'll take him with her.
But Dakota's past has caught up to her. Amid the radioactive ruins of Miami, someone is hunting her. And he won't stop until he has her...or they're both dead.
Featuring fast-paced action and strong, complex characters, the Nuclear Dawn apocalyptic survival series is perfect for fans of Harley Tate, Bobby Akart, Jack Hunt, and Grace Hamilton.
Please note: This book is suitable for older listeners due to mild language and moderate violence in the story.
The group waits 2 days for the fallout to drop off to a safer level. Then they head out to find Dakota’s sister. They find dead and dying people, and gangs with weapons looking for trouble. Weakly armed, they try to avoid being seen. But when Dakota sees a gang terrorizing a couple of first responders, she comes out of hiding with an unloaded assault rifle.
Much like the first book, I didn’t hate it. Didn’t love it. Again ended abruptly with “ to be continued”. It drags a bit with the over explaining of every little bit of nuclear fallout info. On to the third anyway 🤣
If the radiation doesn't kill you, the survivors will." This is the main message of this book. Dakota Sloan is on a quest to reunite with her younger sister, Eden, after the United States has been attacked by at least 13 nuclear bombs. After holing up with other survivors to avoid the worst of the fallout, Dakota decides that the time has come to find Eden.
She is joined by a group of survivors who have come to rely on her knowledge of surviving the aftermath of a nuclear attack. The group includes a former convict, a religious bartender just wanting to find his wife, and a nursing student. As this motley crew tries to make their way across Miami, they encounter some not so savory characters in the form of a gang called the Blood Outlaws. They soon find out that when dealing with these types, it's basically kill or be killed.
The author continues to uncover the back story of the characters like peeling an onion. This seems to be pretty realistic to me since the group is thrown together in the midst of a disaster. As their stories are revealed, the reader begins to find out what makes them tick and what motivates them in their behaviors. The writing is well-done and keeps the reader's attention throughout the book. One thing that kept me reading is wanting to find out what happened to Dakota and Eden in their life prior to the nuclear attack.
The story is fast-paced and the characters begin to grow on you as you read. Of course, I expect that not all of them will survive since this is a post-apoc book. The ending is once again a sort of cliffhanger, but the reader should be aware of this since there are currently 5 books in the series.
The narrator, Stacey Glemboski, does a great job. Her pacing is perfect and her performance added a lot to my listening enjoyment. I was given the chance to listen to the audiobook version of this book by the author and chose to review it.
I tried very hard to like the characters, but the story jumps around too much and leaves out realistic details that would make it a much better read. Graphic fight scenes without connection......
If the radiation doesn’t kill you, the survivors will.

Review: I liked this book. It took me a while to get throught because I promised myself I'd listen to this while going on a run but I failed to run as often as I wanted to. Regardless I enjoyed this book and it was easy to keep track of things. Given that I primarily am I romance reader, i do miss that aspect in the story. I do wish it was more promenently there that said, the lack or romance didnt' get in the way of me liking the characters and the book. I do hope Logan and Dakota get together, we see them warming up a bit more thowards each other in this book.
It does take a long time for Dakota to get to where she is going. This is only day 2 or 3 after the blast and she has traveled like a few miles. Im excited to see where the next book will take us. I'm hopeing I'll get through that quicker than I got through this one haha.
An unexpected nuclear Armageddon has targeted 13 major cities across the United States, wiping out millions and leaving millions more dying from radiation poisoning or injured by simultaneous events in Fear the Fallout, book 2 of Kyla Stone's impeccably related Post~Apocalyptic Survival Thriller in her incredible Nuclear Dawn series. The book continues the saga of Dakota Sloane, a feisty survivor with her sister Eden, of their family's cult Compound. Sadly separated by force of circumstance, Eden is currently living on the far side of the country with foster parents, while Dakota fights to be allowed to adopt her, against the odds. Will the sisters both survive the holocaust of death and destruction? How will Dakota make it to Eden?
The answers to these and many more questions you'll long to learn the answers for are waiting to be discovered in Fear the Fallout - another definite winner from Queen of the Apocalypse, Kyla Stone. Get your copy today - when the world goes mad, you'll be so glad you did!
I love this story and read this quickly. The third book comes out in April so waiting for that to continue this exciting story of nuclear attack and fallout. It is really a story of two sisters, the older one trying to get to he little sister who is in foster care and all alone after the attack. The characters are of varied backgrounds and we see some growth in them as time goes on. A good read.
I am happy with the flow of the story and the characters. Glad Dakota was reunited with her sister. I like the new characters brought in also. So far this series is pretty interesting.
I struggled a bit with this one, first with how quickly society deteriorated, and with the stunted conversations from the explanations of what was happening. I can see how it could be very difficult to travel quickly, with various detours and unforeseen incidents, but it made the book a bit of a drag to read at times.
If the radiation doesn’t kill you, the survivors will.
Forty eight hours have passed since the catastrophic nuclear attack which targeted thirteen major cities in the US. Now that the radiation levels have lowered somewhat, Dakota, accompanied by Logan Shay and Julio, set off on a treacherous journey to rescue her sister Eden.
As they trek through the radioactive ruins of downtown Miami, they are horrified at the scale of the devastation. Bodies as well as wounded civilians trapped under unstable buildings with no help from the authorities forthcoming. Lawlessness is rife, with those taking full advantage of the situation by looting and killing those who stand in their way. When a small team of first responders fall foul of the Blood Outlaw Gang, Dakota and Logan must use their wits to help them. With Maddox closing in on Eden however, will Dakota reach her in time?
Fear the Fallout is the second riveting post apocalyptic survival book of the Nuclear Dawn series. Once again the author has delivered a well executed, tense and compelling instalment. I was particularly impressed by the wonderful vivid and stunning imagery used by the author to describe the scale of the destruction in the wake of the attacks. I felt like I was there with the survivors, experiencing the sights, smells and sounds. The stench of decomposing corpses in the blistering heat, coupled with the smoke from still burning buildings and cars. The agonising moans and cries from those trapped, begging for release through death.
The strength of the book lies in its exceptional character development. Each character showed real depth and substance. While the first book set up the world building, the second book delves deeper into Dakotas and Eden’s past, chronicling their escape from the Shepherds of Mercy as well as their first encounter with the reclusive Ezra Burrows.
We learn more about Logan’s struggle to deal with the demons of his past. His guilt and self loathing at the innocent lives he took, only relents when seeking solace in a bottle. Several times he’s required to step up in the book and at first he’s unable to do so. It’s only when Dakota is in real danger that he comes through and earns her respect. We also learn more about Maddox and his reasons for needing to bring Dakota and Eden back to the Compound. Having fallen out of favour with the Shepherds of Mercy as well as his father for allowing the girls to escape, he hopes to be welcomed back once more.
As the book progresses, there is a subtle change in the group dynamics. Dakota and her fellow survivors may have started off as strangers but it becomes apparent along the way that they have bonded. While everyone looked to Dakota for guidance in the first book, this time it’s Dakota who will need the help of her friends. I’m looking forward to reading the next instalment of this engaging series.
I received an advanced free audible copy of Fear the Impact and I am voluntarily reviewing it. Stacey Glemboski has once again delivered a dynamic well paced performance. Her style of narration throughout both instalments has been exceptional, making it easy for listeners to distinguish between each character, particularly the male voices.
This is book two in the Nuclear Dawn series and continues the journey of a group of survivors, following a nuclear bomb going off in Miami as well as other major US cities, led by Dakota. She is trying to reach her sister, Eden, now the radiation risks have lessened, and take her to safety in the Everglades. A place and a person there who has helped keep them safe in the past. He is a prepper and taught her and her younger sister all about surviving different disaster scenarios.
This experience has made Dakota a leader to the small group, who are also looking to find their families, and a loner called Logan, who has some sort of past with weapons and taking care of himself in rough conditions. She will need his help, if he can stop his reliance on alcohol, if the group are to survive. Now they are on the move, they come across other survivors and certain ones of these are out for power and control, and the group have to fight for their lives all over again.
There is a lot more action, almost non-stop, in this book and it shows all the different sides of humanity and how people react, as they are all faced with surviving an unthinkable occurrence. Add in a loyal follower of a religious cult, who has been sent to capture Dakota and Eden and return them to the leader of the cult, then the pressure ramps up intensely. Who will reach Eden first is the major worry for Dakota. Delays from obstacles of downed buildings or gang members to avoid all lead to more stress and anxiety.
A great read, as was the first book ! There are some really interesting characters in the book, with in-depth reasoning behind their lives and how they became the way they are. Some of what the group comes across makes you wonder how you might react yourself in those conditions, as well as how you see certain characters react. There are hard decisions to be made and the survivors may not necessarily agree on everything needed for their own survival. I can’t wait to see what happens in the next book, as this one finishes at quite a convenient point, but leaves you with the need for more asap. I received an ARC copy of this book from the author and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.
The second book picks up right where the first left off, which is good if you are reading them back to back. The characters are trying to make their way a few miles from where the were holed up in the theater in order to rescue Dakota’s sister who is waiting for her.
Along the way they come into a lot of trouble with trying to avoid getting contaminated, gangs that are already running the streets and debris and chaos that is all around from the blast. They learn that there were 13 devices set up across the country that exploded and several major cities have been destroyed and millions are displaced or worse.
In this book, you get a closer look at Logan and why he drinks so much to just get by. He lives with inner demons from things he has done in his past. You also learn that Dakota and her sister, Eden, are on the run from a religious cult where something bad happened and they have been in hiding trying to stay away from those people. (Secretly, I feel like they are the ones who sets the devices all across the country.)
There was definitely a lot of action in this book. A few members in the group got hurt and there is a bit of fighting physically against gang members. Honestly, I feel like it may have been just a little drawn out and I honestly wish it would not have taken all the way to the end of the book for her to finally connect with her sister.
However, it does end on a little doozy and with some of the information into back stories, I am going to go to the next one to see where it goes. I’m hoping it picks up a bit because I do want to see how the characters survive and grow in strength.
Fear the Fallout (Nuclear Dawn, Book 2) by Kyla Stone and narrated by Stacey Glemboski is a thrilling second book to the series and I’m loving it! Recommend if you’re looking for something in the post-apocalyptic genre, something new and will hold your attention, a shorter listen, or if you enjoyed the first book.
The book beings with the characters making their way to rescue Eden. They continue to deal with the fallout and the world running amok. We learn more of everyone’s past including the sister’s time spent with Ezra and how things came to be. The story once again being told from Dakota, Eden, Logan, and Maddox’s point of view.
The narrator, Stacey Glemboski, was great. Easy-to-listen-to voice and a good pace.
Overall, I’d recommend, especially if you’re looking for a new post-apocalyptic series. I listened to this one straight through- very difficult to put down.
Parental guidance/trigger warnings: Similar warnings as the first book- fallout and death from the nuclear bombs, foster system problems (abuse), alcoholism, gangs, guns, violence (what you’d expect if the world fell apart), past abuse that the sister’s suffered at hands of a religious organization (beatings or similar type of abuse), religious fanatics (minimal preaching).
*I was given a free review copy of the audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. Thank you for allowing me to listen and review the book!
Another quick review because I'm too caught up in this thing to spend excess time talking about it. I must dive into book #3 immediately or I'll go insane.
But good gawd this entry was so astronomically grim. And I mean that in a good way. What a fantastic continuation to book one. Picks up right where it left off then never lets you go. Things are effectively amplified this go around, despite still mostly consisting of a single treacherous journey being undertaken by our band of characters. The further they go, the harsher it gets. It's a tough pill to swallow. And tough one to read. Such hauntingly vivid imagery conjured up by Kyla Stone.
I loved it. Loved how everything felt more harrowing. More gruesome and violent (some of which had me writhing in my seat). The reality of the situation sinks heavy on our band of characters, and by default me as a reader. I loved getting the bite-sized scraps of answers in this entry, little snippets of how the country is dealing with the nuclear fallout but without having ALL the answers. You're still left wanting. Loved, loved, loved the growth of the characters. I'm getting even more attached now (and hence, far more nervous).
This is the second 5-star book and I'm ready for more. Moving on to the next one. Let's see if we can go three for three.
I thought this was a solid follow-up to Book 1. Most of the book revolves around the original crew making their way through the city following the nuclear detonation from the first novel as Dakota continues to try to get to Eden. There's not that much going on in the book as the fallout means that the going is slow, but it still kept me entertained and I found the slower pace more realistic. The chapters are told from Dakota, Logan, Eden and Maddox's points of view (particularly the first two) with the story following straight on from Point of Impact. The reader gets to find out a bit more about Dakota and Logan's backstory, but there were mostly carrots dangled here and there without their full backstory being completely revealed just yet. I found Logan developed more as a character in this book and he's definitely a favourite of mine on the pages. As the group travels towards the upscale part of town to get to Eden, there's still the threat of gangs to worry about - I'm going to assume this crops up further down the track in later books as well. The build up with Maddox is also a big part of the story line and without giving away any spoilers, the final few chapters were particularly good. I'll definitely be continuing on with Book 3.
ONE INTENSE EXPERIENCE!!! OMG! Holy crap, guys this is one of the most thrilling rides I have ever been on. Kyla has this series rocking to its own beat. I was in awe from the first part. I was thinking some dumb crap about it couldn't get any better. Blew my mind once again and I'm happy to say it does indeed continue on its forward path even better than the last. All the drama, uncertainty, fear, danger and suspense increases while tension spirals. All the plot twists, unexpected circumstances and unpredictable surprises make for one thrilling experience. I don't know what Kyla uses for inspiration but I'm solidly on the Kyla team. Man, with her insight, eye for detail and imagination alone picks up the gold metal from me. I have to say if you guys read nothing else this year, you have to read this kick-ass series. If you like it action packed, fast paced, nerve racking, spine tingling and an adrenaline rush so swift you can't put this series down once you start. I've read the entire thing so far 4 times without missing a beat. Kyla really rocked this series and man she nailed it. An amazing job Kyla, thanks for sharing this awesome read with us.
The first thing people new to this series should be aware of is this book follows on directly from Point Of Impact, the first book of the series. You could jump in here but I would say it’s definitely best to read book one first. Dakota and Logan and co. are back and still in great danger following the detonation of a nuclear bomb in Miami. The threats to our group are greater than ever as they face down armed thugs and crazed survivors as well as the ever present threat of radiation poisoning. While trying to deal with all that Dakota just wants to get to her sister Eden. Kyla Stone does a masterful job of keeping the story moving at a good pace while at the same time never letting the tension drop. We also get more of Dakota and Eden’s backstory too learning how they came to be where they are. There’s great character development of all the characters and we see what each person is really made of. What really strikes me about these books is the frightening plausibility of it all, it’s unnerving at times but great reading. I can’t wait to find out what happens next.
I’m still really enjoying this series so far, our female protagonist seems to have a small group of survivors that she’s helped following her to help. Save her little sister Eden they’ve come across some gangs and loaders.
We’ve had flashbacks of her past living on the commune, which is like a crazy villages cult. This cult seems to be the ones that set up the bombs in major cities all over the United States that went off, so it’s domestic terrorism and they were trying to bring upon the Armageddon.
In the flashbacks, we heard stories of our female protagonist being branded and burned, and her little sister Eden had her throat slit and they had to escape and a crazy old doomsday prepper ended up taking them in.
The leaders son is near by and ready to kidnap Eden to take her back to the commune.
This second book ends with the sisters being reunited, but their hardships aren’t over yet.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
A rough journey to find Eden. Dakota finds shelter to minimize the effects from the fallout of the nuclear bomb. When she feels that she can go find her sister, Eden, Dakota discovers that she has a group that wants to go with her. She wants to travel on her own, but they are determined to follow her. The scene that faces them is pure devastation. As they travel, they discover that with all the destruction, the gangs are taking of Miami. They have to survive the violence of the gangs and the ruble caused by the bomb. They suffer from the heat and the humidity of Florida. Nothing is easy. Everyone is tense. They are close to finding Eden when they come upon some first responders who are being threatened. Will Dakota ever get to Eden? Read this exciting, tense and page turning book.
There isn't as much action here as there was in book one, but that book started with a Nuclear explosion that turned out to be one of several to wreak havoc on the United States. Enter book 2 with the beginning of its aftermath, or fallout... Dakota is on the move, but she isn't the only one. Eden is hiding in a temporary safe haven. But how long will it remain so?
This book tracks the immediate effects of the bomb by focusing our gaze on people, individuals and groups, whose lives have been torn asunder by forces beyond their control. How each of them reacts, when pushed to breaking point, is a subject that the author treats with great attention here. The story moves with a good pace, as the realistically drawn characters each battle on their own ways in a world that bears little resemblance to what had been before.
There is no turning back for anyone now. Onwards to book three!
This is the second apocalyptic series by Kyla Stone after The Last Sanctuary and it is somewhat similar (well, it has the same feel about it!). It's about a terrorist attack on U.S. soil with catastrophic consequences. I've already read all the books in this series and the story and characters are quite good but it only follows the story of a group a people without telling us much about the world at large. Fast pacing and well written I quite enjoyed reading this series but it didn't really make it to four full stars in my opinion.
I wasn't expecting at all some of the things that happened. By the end, it almost gave me a heart attack:
☢️ Dakota keeps giving little details about the compound and so far, it sounds like the Yearning for Zion Ranch or like that other cult Branch Davidians. ☢️ I'm starting the campaign for Logan to quit alcohol; he might do it to drown his demons. He did some horrible things but honestly, he was a kid who finally had an adult to lookup for even though the things he did weren't good. ☢️ If Eden foster parents cared enough to teach her ASL, Dakota could care more about. Why do you want Eden keep writing everything, just learn ASL. ☢️ I really hope Julio's wife is alive somewhere! ☢️ I'm not sold 100% on liking Shay, besides the I was studying to be a nurse so now I'm everyone's doctor. ☢️ Maddox is definitely in the delulu state of whatever crap The Prophet and the Sheperds brainwashing him to believe as the only truth that matters.
The 2nd book in the Nuclear Dawn series starts right after the end of the first (which you really have to read first) and the tension raises. On their search for Eden, Dakota's sister, she, Logan and the others really learn about the extent of the destruction of the nuclear bombs snd what some people will do in a world without government, police, order. In this 2nd part the pages turned themselves even faster and nearly prevented me from sleeping ;) And the reader learns a few things about the past of the main characters. I assume this will be quite a ride til the end and I'm looking forward to be a part. Some advice though: if you can't live with cliffhangers, don't pick it up... I got an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review
