I received a review copy of VILE & BLESSED from the publisher Emergent Realms in exchange for an honest review.
Ultimately I was impressed with AH Serrano's debut and am looking forward to more from this author. I grew up reading YA Fantasy but haven't read it in a while, and it was nice to immerse myself in a fantasy world and fall in love with the characters. My favorite character was River—so great! Another aspect of this series that I loved was the world building. You find out early on that this culture is multilingual, which is a touch you don't often see in Euro-centric or Americanized Fantasy.
I would highly recommend this book to fans of AN EMERALD IN THE ASHES and CHILDREN OF BLOOD AND BONE—young adult epic fantasy with a focus on the characters and their relationships and fun, fast-paced action in a creative, unique world of magic.

Vile and Blessed, the debut novel of A H Serrano is a YA Dark Fantasy that envelops the reader with a mix of mystery and secrecy. This is the first book in the series and introduces the reader to Anmerilian, a large country occupied by people with different abilities.
The main character River Kennry has always felt different, he is born without any ability and doesn't fit in with the other people of Anmerilian. His sister Shiloh and his friends Darthan Nalund and Lhii Fuéra are the only ones who accept River as he is.
River starts having strange dreams and his paths cross with a mysterious merchant who has answers to his questions. The book is divided into 3 parts, the first part is told from River's POV and from the second part Darthan's POV is added. It's interesting to experience the story from Darthan's POV since a certain important character plays a role in both of Darthan and River's lives.
River must deal with rejection from many people, at some point I felt so sorry for him, it seems as if he never catches a break.
River soon finds himself at The Institute Hospital. Having spent the majority of his childhood at Tuerçic City Hospital, River is left with traumatic memories from Dr. Armanjic and is admitted to his care again and have to endure new treatments at The Institute Hospital.
The true identities of some characters are revealed which is a shocking surprise. I don't want to go into too much detail to avoid any spoilers, but the story takes a dramatic turn halfway and something is freed inside River. Here is where the story gets interesting and the reader's toes are dipped into a sea of questions.
"At the height of your weakness, I am freed."
The world-building is detailed and the map adds authenticity to the story. The characters are well developed and interesting. Shiloh and Lhii are my favourite characters, they have strong personalities and are easy likeable. I find the different abilities interesting and would have liked a bit more elaboration in the story, but The Glossary of Names and Terms gives us some details about the abilities. Since the focus is on River and his lack of abilities, the reader's focus is drawn to his past and the possibilities of his future.
The author has the ability to create a world with its own unique language and make it believable. The plot is startlingly original and the characters get under your skin. I'm looking forward to book 2!

It has been quite some time when Emergent Realms contacted me to review one of their books and I declined. Honestly, aside from having too much on my plate at the time, I’m not particularly a huge fantasy/scifi reader—more so, if it is a series. But, this year, I’ve decided I’m going to give them a chance.
Vile & Blessed wasn’t at all what I expected. Although, to be fair, I am unaware if I even had any expectations in the first place. And I believe that that is a good starting point for reading a book—so as not to fall into the hole of disappointments.
The book began really strong, for me. It was mesmerizing to read as the flow of the words felt as though the author is in front of a campfire telling the story herself. It has such a smooth rhythm that I didn’t even feel the pages slip by.
I was strongly intrigued by the characters. Each of them has their own purpose within the story, and that gave a powerful mark as you read through the book. I also enjoyed the author’s decision to provide another point-of-view to allow the readers to have a more broad introspection of the story.
For its pacing, the book was relatively fast-paced—an in-between, if you may. It wasn’t slow to bore you, but it also wasn’t at all swift to permit the feeling of being left behind.
What was weak, in my opinion, though, was the lack of better introduction to the book’s world, magic, and cultural backgrounds. It was a story laced with a beautiful scent of diversity yet it can be perceived that the author provided such a miniscule amount of effort into giving a better approach in immersing the readers within her world.
It felt as though she could have done something in threading particular instances within parts of the story to allow a more fluid stream of descriptive subtleties that will provide readers with greater immersion towards her created universe.
Moreover, I was pretty disappointed with the choice of trajectory for the characters. In addition to their lack of strong background, the way the characters projected themselves along the story was underwhelming.
There are two characters that dug themselves into my mind, though: (1) Aaro; and, (2) Savyra. Without diving into spoiler-y details, I love these characters for such specific reasons: Aaro for his interestingly refined antagonistic characterization—he was effective as his character wasn’t at all evil, but with the way he was written, it may seem like so: and, Savyra for her refreshing personality that complimented the grimness of the story very well.
Vile & Blessed is a potent novel emblazoned with so much possibilities. Despite my partial disappointment, I can see the strength of the book and how it can be a more effective read for others. It would be interesting to see her prowess in interlacing character stories by creating a wider range of perspective to allow fluidity with what I found lacking within her story. I do, still, look forward to what the author has to offer in the subsequent parts of the book.

I found Vile & Blessed an okay read.
Some aspects were good and some ... not so much.
I really liked the concept of the story. River is a character who has spent his life being lied to and accepted certain facts for truth when, in reality, he has no idea who he really is or where he’s come from.
He’s loved through some horrific things in his short life and from the ending, it’s clear he’s only got more to come.
It was easy to get into and it held my attention but I didn’t love it.
It definitely has the potential to be a great series though.

Vile & Blessed is hands down one of the best books I have read this year. The characters are personable, drawing you into the story from page one, especially River and Darthan. I followed their development with great excitement! I can hardly wait for more from AH Serrano.

VILE & BLESSED was a fantastically dark fantasy filled with magic and danger, with a tortured and unsure boy at the center of it all.
River Kennry is an anomaly — in a world of powers, he was born with none. Spiritless, and with an unexplainable condition that is a mystery to everyone, including the myriad of doctors who subjected him to all manner of torturous tests. River knows he’s powerless, but that doesn’t stop the feeling of something other in him, something deep within that’s trying to get out. Things get rather mysterious when River is contacted by a person unknown who has information about River’s past with the doctors at the Institute, and that sets River on a quest of self-discovery that can either shed some light on who and what he is, or end his life.
Atmospheric and dark with subtle touches of horror, this book is exactly the type of fantasy that appeals to my dark heart. Though there are plenty of bright spots mixed in, particularly the friendships that River has with his small group. I also loved the world that Serrano created with this book, and how layered and detailed it is, and the air of mystery that envelops you from the very first page.
The characters were one of the highlights of this novel for me. Each and every one was perfectly imperfect and I loved that they all had their flaws and were just so generally human and relatable. I also loved the storyline surrounding River and how he just doesn’t feel like he fits in, even though he does have a circle of friends. That added such a realistic element to this fantasy world, and it’s something that many teens will absolutely understand when they pick this book up.
Bottom line — a delightfully dark debut that will grab readers from the very first page. The book ends on quite a cliffhanger, and I will certainly be impatiently waiting for book 2.

I enjoyed this one. A dark fantasy with lots of mystery and intrigue, we follow River an Anmerilian born without ability. River has had a difficult life, without a spirit he has been subjected to various treatments from doctors and shunned by almost everyone. He has a few friends and his sister who are supportive of him, I enjoyed their dynamic. River is struggling with the mysteries of his past and comes across a cryptic stranger. This prompts River to investigate further with the help of his friends. It becomes apparent that there is more to his story than meets the eye. He is apprehended and taken to the institute, where River tries to find out more about history. A journey of self discovery and acceptance, well written relationships and enough mystery to keep you on your toes. I enjoyed the magic system. It was also a bit emotional at times and very thought provoking.

October 31, 2020I was super lucky to be able to read an advanced copy of this book, and I would highly recommend you pick it up yourself on release day! If you like mystery, you'll love following the threads of River's past throughout the book to figure out what's really going on. I enjoyed learning about each character (not gonna lie, Darthan is my fave) and the world as well. It kept me interested for sure trying to figure out what was going to happen next. Plus, to take the time to have a language with slang and all that takes a lot of work and guts and I commend the author on all that effort! Truthfully the only thing I'm bummed about is not having book 2 to break into already.

This is a very unique dark fantasy.
We follow River, a boy born in a world where everyone develops powers or unique abilities, and yet he was born with none. He’s basically treated like a pariah, even amongst his own parents. He meets a woman who causes him to wonder about his past and who he really is. River is determined to find out, so he goes back to the Institute where he was hospitalized when he was younger to get answers. And finds out about something dangerous that is part of him and what he may be capable of.
This story started out dark, and then just got darker and darker as the story went on. Poor River and how everyone treats him. I mean goodness! Just because he doesn’t have any powers, doesn’t mean he needs to be treated like dirt! Although, that may also be why I loved the friendships he did have. His best friend Darthan, who is so sassy and a flirt, and his crush Lhii both stuck with him no matter what and were determined to help him. My favorite relationship was between River and his sister Shiloh. They’re so close and you can feel that as you read the book, especially when they’re separated and his sister just makes him her priority and sole focus to help him.
The world is interesting and has its own language and powers, which just made the world more interesting. There’s a lovely glossary in the back that explains A LOT, which helped! Love it when an author includes a glossary to explain language or words used in a book. And after that ending, makes you want to know even more about the world.
I will say that I never really connected with any of the characters. I connected more with the relationships, rather than individual people. Darthan was definitely my favorite and Lhii my least. However, the way everything played out for each character was rather shocking. There were definitely some plot twists in the book that I did not see coming and I’m still trying to recover from them 😅

If the authors goal was to make me frustratingly know more of the story well they succeeded! I constantly wanted to know more and what was going on, I needed answers. Which kept me wanting to keep reading. From page one I was invested into the plot.
The plot is mysterious as there is very little we know since we see mostly through Rivers eyes. I came up with a bunch of theories of what it could be and I was looking for clues to try and figure out who he is. Im glad we got to know most of the information and who he really was at the end. It was really interesting and satisfying to have everything revealed.
The characters are great, some are more emotional then others but all of them have a great roll. My favourite will have to be Lhii and Darthan. Darthan is so fricking funny I really loved him. There was a lot of teenager issues which I feel like most of us could relate to once in our life. River was great as well I just wish he would of asked more questions when he had the opportunity to. 😂 Oh and Mama Tè was so sweet I loved her!
The writing style is not bad but scene transitions could be a bit better. Oh and I loved the little glossary at the end of the book! Over all it was a great read, I’m excited for book 2 and I recommend that you pick it up!

Vile & Blessed is a fantastic coming of age story. A H Serrano uses multifaceted characters, a unique setting, and the intrigue of secrets to draw the reader in and keep them turning the page for more. I especially enjoyed the themes of friendship and self discovery. While River is unlike a typical teenager, his story still felt familiar to me because his uncertainty in himself is something everybody experiences, on some level, as they become who they are meant to be. I'd recommend this novel to anybody who appreciates fantasy books and a good mystery.

Read this book if you’re looking for an escape into a remarkably detailed new world full of powers, love, loss, fear, and the danger of keeping secrets. A H Serrano’s world of fantasy and horror is much more than it appears at first blush. Be prepared for intrigue, shock, some gore, and a fascination with a world with so much to hide. Can’t wait for book 2!!

This book was written by Maria’s daughter. Maria is the para my building who I have been working closely with since she joined up in September. This is a tough one to review. I really liked the concept and the main character. I found the story sometimes difficult to follow as characters would be somewhere else with no transition or explanation. It also left me hanging more than I like. Fantasies do that to an extent but usually have some closure. This one did not.

Thanks, Emergent Realms for sending me a copy of this wonderful coming of age story. This book centers on the story of River as he tries to essentially fit into a society that has powers - whereas he has none. It was a very intriguing read and I would say the mystery aspect of this book is huge whereas in other stories it plays a small role. Not this one. This is a book where you have to keep reading to see if one of your questions will be answered so I'd say it's more plot-driven. One thing I loved about this book is that Serrano does tie up some of those loose ends near the conclusion of the book instead of leaving several threads unresolved. It still ends on a cliffhanger, but we get more information about who River is in the big reveal. I also liked Serrano's overall writing style and appreciated the glossary at the end of the book. The world-building and plot were fantastic overall and right on target with what I appreciate in a fantasy book.
On another note, there were some characters I took a liking to instantly aside from River like Mama Te and Darhthan. Others were ok and still had a part to play in the story - I just wish they were a tad more layered if that makes sense. Perhaps we will see that in book two. There were some parts that had time jumps that were somewhat confusing, but it's easy to catch back on - just wasn't quite certain the first time I'd read through. I think if we get a timeline or even "year" headings above each chapter along with the glossary, that may help readers in the next installments. Other than that, I think it's a fun read - definitely pick it up if you like mysterious and a little touch of horror!

This dark fantasy was a perfect October read! We follow River, the only Anmerilian born without a power. Due to his lack of ability, his life has been full of doctors experimenting on him and neighbors avoiding him. His few friends and sister are the only ones who wants to be near him. As he stumbles upon a mysterious stranger, secrets about his identity and the country’s past comes to light. But before being able to find anything out, he is once again sent to the people torturing him “to make him better”.
I loved the friend group and the dynamics between them, and the plot has potential. I found it very slow paced at times, or time-jumps that I did not quite follow. My favorite part of the book was part two and the time he spent away from his friends, as I unfortunately found the other parts quite boring.
But the second part of the book was so interesting, dark and perfect that it gave this book at least one extra star! I can’t wait to get my hands on the second book and find out what happens to my favorite characters!
I definitely recommend this book to someone who is looking for a dark fantasy filled with mystery and secrets!

This book started strong! I was impressed by the writing right away. Serrano builds a unique world where River has spent most of his life in an institution being experimented on.
There was a lot I liked about this book, the characters being one of them. Mama Te was my favorite. She was so loveable and caring. She was the mother they all needed. I also loved Shiloh and her unbreakable bond with River. I always love a good relationship between siblings and this was one of the best. It was evenly paced with mystery laced throughout.
The story leaves you hanging quite a bit while it leads you along with very little info. Honestly, I’m not sure I have a full understanding of the plot now that I’m finished. I felt frustrated multiple times that I did not have enough information. I know River didn’t have the info but I felt the story would’ve moved along better if the reader had more tidbits of information along the way. Then we could be cheering him on or yelling at him. Instead I regularly felt frustrated and confused.
All in all, it’s a unique story and a great debut that many will enjoy!

River is shut out of society because he has no magic power. Even his parents seem to hate him. But when he's sent to the Institute for "treatment", he learns there is much more to his condition than he could have imagined.
I thought this was an absolutely brilliant book. It takes some familiar tropes (someone born without magic, a lost past, a secret orphan) and reimagines them through the lens of real-world events in a way that lends new insights to both. River's time in the institute provides a thoughtful commentary on the use of institutionalization in our world. There's a clear metaphor for mental health treatments--and the abuses within that system--that's explored thoughtfully.
My favorite thing about the book was the writing style, which was detailed while still being crisp and clear. I just wished for a bit more worldbuilding, as the many different magic styles were introduced rather quickly, without as much richness as I would have preferred. Overall, though, this was an extremely well-done debut, and I do hope the series will continue!

For a debut novel, I was blown away at A H Serrano's writing skills! I felt immersed in the world that they created! The descriptions and world-building were incredible.
This was such an easy read (I flew through the book) and the plot was incredible and unique. It follows our MC River, who has grown up without an ability ( in a world where everyone has an ability). River doesn't feel like he fits into the societal norms of Anmerilian. Only a select few accept River for who he is, his sister Shiloh and friends Darthan and Lhii. River has no idea who is he, what he is or where he is from, but he is eager to learn.
The story was phenomenal but the characters fell flat for me personally. While I don't need to love a character when the plot is amazing this would have brought the rating up a lot higher if this was the case. By the end of the book, I did like the characters and felt anxious to see where the story goes in book two because DAMN THAT CLIFFHANGER!!!
