Sally Gardner grew up and still lives in London. Being dyslexic, she did not learn to read or write until she was fourteen and had been thrown out of several schools, labeled unteachable, and sent to a school for maladjusted children. Despite this, she gained a degree with highest honors at a leading London art college, followed by a scholarship to a theater school, and then went on to become a very successful costume designer, working on some notable productions.
After the births of twin daughters and a son, she started first to illustrate and then to write picture books and chapter books, usually with fairytale- or otherwise magical subject matter. She has been called 'an idiosyncratic genius' by London’s Sunday Times.
The ebook I read is in blue ink. The colour and font was easy to the eye.
This is a whimsical book. Imagine our female protagonist as a child of Han Christian Anderson's The Little Mermaid, that is, the happy ending version. In this story, the girl has a mermaid mother, who still has her fishtail. Her father is human. He carries their mother when she needs to go about the house. She either sits in a bucket or in the bathtub. If you enjoyed watching Little Mermaid 2, you will like this book. If you have read the middle grade book Ingo by Helen Dunmore, this book is the chapter book version.
The words in this book well-chosen and bring the story to life. Humour is sprinkled in every page. The characters are adorable, like the pastry-chef working in the ship's galley. This is the perfect read for lower primary children, a popular age for pirates, dragons and mermaids. And this book has them all.
I kept looking at the beginning of this book for the missing initial chapters... I don't know how many times I checked to see if it was the second or third in a series. The book had way too many minor characters who were never properly introduced and didn't serve enough of a role. I was confused - my 5 year-old was totally lost. There were good story points, but it needed a serious rewrite with a real introduction!
I won a copy from the publisher without expectation of a review. It has not affected my opinions.
MR TIGER, BETSY, AND THE SEA DRAGON returns to a quirky world of fairy-tale-esque adventures. This time there are pirates and dragons!
This is a book that highlights the heroism of ordinary people, through new character Septimus, who's kidnapped and brought aboard the pirate ship. He was a really nice addition to the cast, someone who is very ordinary but has a big heart and has courage.
I appreciated that this book explained how the story world fit with ours, setting this world as "off the map" - linked to our world but more magical! It's a fun detail that reinforces the quirky nature of it, the oddity of its location that fits into the vibes of it all.
We get to spend time with the mermaids in this book! Having introduced that they exist through Betsy's mum, they weren't that present in MR TIGER, BETSY, AND THE BLUE MOON. However, this time around we do get to see a bit more of them as well as understanding some of their culture. I am hoping we get to see even more in the next book!
Nick Maland is back with the illustrations. I really loved the double page spreads here and how they help tell the story. For instance, there's one that's split into three panels that shows what happens to the pirate ship in a storm, letting the words take a rest while the illustration shows off the tale. The words also interact with the illustrations more. For example, there's a bit at the end where it's like "I'll just show you" and then has an image of the scene.
Sort of hard to rate, as I’m not the in the intended reader age group (8-12). I’d picked it up to read to my 6yo daughter, but after a few pages we realized it best to wait a couple more years for full enjoyment.
That being said, Mr. Tiger, Betsy, and the Sea Dragon is incredibly charming and quirky with delightful illustrations on almost every page. It’s wholesome with adventure, a little girl learning how to be brave, some peril considering the villainous pirates, and fun fantasy elements. For me, I found that the straightforward narration complimented the prevalent illustrations and clever turns of phrase so as to be easy to follow but interesting.
Hopefully we can circle back around to it when my girl is a bit older. This is actually the second book in the series but could be read fine on its own.
I also admire the author’s note at the end about nurturing one’s (especially a child’s) imagination and the fact that the book was printed in blue “Dyslexie” font, apparently easier to read, which I had just thought was part of the whimsy. Isn’t that lovely?
My favourite characters: •|• Betsy Glory, the daughter of Alfonso Glory (a wonderful ice cream maker) and Myrtle (a mermaid). °^° The mysterious Mr Tiger.
