“The original edit was mindful of reflecting how Finns speak English (a language that has no articles). As this approach had been poorly received in some quarters, the book has been now (10/2022) re-edited.”

Jon and Gus, science fiction fans from Finland with a penchant for fist bumping and pop culture references, travel to the Portland Comic Con where tragedy strikes. Their hero, Dr Wells, suffers a heart attack. With his dying breath, the doctor exhorts Jon to “find the …” as he pushes a book into Jon’s hands. Following clues inscribed in the book, Jon and Gus discover an alien structure with a mysterious Black Table which they accidently activate, transporting them to an alien world.

Jumping from world to world via the Black Table galactic transportation network, Jon and Gus embark on the adventure of a lifetime where they encounter monsters, alien tech, giant vessels made of water and make new friends. But those friends are facing an unstoppable and mindless enemy. An enemy that is destroying the galaxy, and Earth is next in its path.

Can two fans from Finland save the day? Black Table is a rollicking yarn of two likeable, wise-cracking friends who like nothing better than pranking each other. That is, except when they are not doing something more serious, like saving the universe.

SPSFC2 full read #1... Let's go

This is a fun sci-fi adventure for those who love pop culture references in their books. My original draw was the Finnish characters, which ended up being a bit of a let down because the humor was nearly entirely American and there weren’t many noticeable references to Finnish customs or culture.

The characters are adults but the writing feels geared towards middle grade or YA, with lots of excited shouting and fist bumps and such. Jon and Gus are definitely likeable, if not static characters, cracking lots of jokes and Star Trek references when they’re not busy saving the world. They’re relatable enough but man, they just felt entirely juvenile. Huge Bill & Ted vibes.

It’s also quite full of typos and sentences with poor structure so I’m wondering what an editor and a proofreader were doing while reading it. I may have been reading a prior version from Kindle Unlimited, as it seems like the book was re edited at some point. I totally understand the authors note about Finns speaking English, but this goes well beyond dropped articles to just not being well written or edited.

Ex: “He rolled one end a few times around his free hand a few times…”

Like I said, the dropped articles don’t bother me. It’s the repetitive phrases, frequently off putting verbiage, sentence structures, etc, this book just frankly needed a strong proofreader and it affected the reading experience.

That said though, it is a fun book with a fast moving plot and likeable characters. That’s why I originally voted to read the entire book. The characters are fairly static so the plot is driving, which I definitely prefer because I hate books with tons of inner monologue. That said, I did enjoy reading it quite a bit and the concept is actually cool, with the discovery of a time and space travel device, alien races, a threat to the Galaxy, and of course, hissing Star Trek doors. I was smiling too, I mean it’s funny but it’s only funny so many times.

Overall: I don’t regret reading the full book, but based on the overall presentation and perceived reading level of Black Table, I can’t go much higher than 2.5, or 5/10 for SPSFC grading purposes.

I’d recommend it for YA or middle grade sci-fi fans that don’t mind reading through some rough editing, and those who enjoy plot driven books with lots of jokes. This would have made a great graphic novel

What a gem! Black Table is a fast-paced adventure set in today’s world with today’s problems, but taking today’s solutions with them to infinity and beyond and using them as tools to fight evil. The best friends, a survivor and a genius felt like a perfect combination. Once I started reading, I didn’t want to put it down. Sometimes I laughed in tears before I could continue. I also loved Jon’s background stories and their Star Trek like attitude towards other races and words. This would make a perfect movie!

Although I don’t have the numbers, considering how fast tickets sell out, I would assume Comic Con expos and events are one of the most sought-after journeys for die-hard comic/sci-fi fans to take. I personally love the costumes and the fanfare. From the grandiose events held in NYC to the Roswell Galacticon held in the UFO capital of the world, all are a whole lot of fun. Not to mention, the big stars that attend; from the days of Kirk and Spock to the more recent Hayden Christensen of Star Wars fame, these fests are truly exciting. Which is why when this incredible book began at a Comic Con and readers could “walk through” the sights and sounds with the two main characters, I was beyond thrilled.

Their names are Jon and Gus (think Bill & Ted here for a second), and their excellent adventure is to travel all the way from Finland to attend the Comic Con being held in Portland. These two ‘awesome dudes’ really get into the fanfare, arriving at the convention dressed in “Star Trek: Next Generation uniforms.” And, no…they did not forget the one-of-a-kind ears. They’re not only into the hullabaloo, but they are also looking forward to meeting one of the persons they’ve looked up to for a long time who will be appearing: Dr. Wells. Call it fate or call it tragedy, their icon suffers a heart attack at the convention, but not before shoving a book at Jon and Gus and telling them to go “find something.”

Like two good soldiers following orders from their hero, Jon and Gus end up going into the “unknown” where the unexplained awaits them. They will follow clues left behind by Dr. Wells, and the book’s information, and end up standing face-to-face with aliens, and a technology that the aliens own that works much like a time-transport machine.

They learn that there is a darkness coming across the land and it is headed straight for Earth. Using the Black Table device, Jon and Gus, and their new buddies met along the way, will travel between the alien world and the present attempting to halt the Swarm – which is the entity that’s doing its best to destroy all life in the universe. Now you’re talking about the blind leading the blinder, as Jon and Gus stumble while they try to understand this strange situation, as well as all the gifts the Black Table can give them on their path.

Jon, the guy who understands survival techniques, paired with Gus, who, much like Dr. Spock, is a techno wizard who searches for sanity and logic in everything they come up against, make for the perfect duo in this interstellar jaunt. And with the great job the author did of inserting well-known sci-fi references from TV shows and films, you can tell that this writer was “on board” at all times with the world he created. The Bill & Ted comment refers to the dudes who love fist-bumping and working together to save everything in the galaxy, even though they have no clue whatsoever what’s going on most of the time.

Add in the fact that, for once, every character is a “good” person – whether human or alien – and you have a read that is exciting, shows great unity, and causes you a little bit of heartbreak knowing, post-pandemic, that events, conferences and the job of just having fun was simple and brought joy to everyone. I give 5-stars to this one, gang, in every category. From the nerds to the pop-culture inserts to the fun storyline that involves the reader instantly, this author has done a heck of job. Best part? There is a Book 2 that’s just as great! Enjoy!

Really enjoyed this book. It's funny with lots of popular culture scifi references. Main characters are not really like this, but I saw right away Simon Pegg and Nick Frost as Jon and Gus :)

Black Table

I came to this book by an indirect route: this negative review at Boundary’s Edge by Alex Hormann. The strength of his negative reaction to it was surprising. I started poking around and after looking at other reviews and finding a bit of a polarized reaction, decided to read it for myself.

My experience with the book was more positive. I was expecting Bill and Ted with infuriatingly good Anglo-Nordic accents, so I wasn’t disappointed. I’m willing to give Pennanen considerable slack for the writing, although that was competent if very minimalist. His prose may be stripped down, but at least it’s clean. (And sometimes, particularly for Americans, hey, you might have to work for it a little bit. Just saying.)

I also thought there was a bit more nuance in the story than typical for this part of the genre. Look, no one will be mistaking this for Dune. But it’s a celebration of pop culture in a lot of ways and doesn’t take itself too seriously. Plus, taking it on the level of what it is, it’s just a fun read.

This book started off very quickly introducing the main characters in a fun and exciting way through going to a Sci-Fi convention. We immediately know they're different quirks and can tell that they are going to be fun characters. They share a lot of inside jokes with each other throughout the book that the reader gets to be in on, but not all the other characters. As they go through space and meet friends and foes the dialogue continues to match what is happening within the story.

The storyline itself is one that I have never read before. I loved the uniqueness of this story line. With it being a sci fi book, there was obviously some science behind the extraordinary events. Luckily, the characters are able to explain it in a way that the readers are able to understand.

This was an easy read. That would be great for any teen or adult who loves sci fi.

I bought the book as a recommendation from a friend, mentioning a part of the story in happening in my hometown. I am not particularly a fan of science fiction, but this book kept me up in the nights, unable to put it down. The story is full of 80s-2000s references to movies, music, TV shows and sci-fi. The characters are fun and easy to identify with. I really feared and cared for them through the story. As science fiction is so not my genre, I am more than happy to give full five stars.

Black Table by Anttimatti Pennanen is about friends Jon and Gus who travel from Finland to Portland Comic Con. They meet their hero in time for him to abruptly die, but not before putting them on a quest.

They discover an alien structure (Black Table) that allows them to travel between worlds. They meet friendly aliens, vessels made of water, and a destructive entity called the Swarm. The Swarm is destroying life across the universe, and Jon and Gus (and their new friends) must work together to stop it.

Things I Liked:
-The comic con setting. Only a small portion of the overall book, but experiencing the con with Jon & Gus was fun, and made me miss the pre-pandemic days when I went to conventions.

-The characters. Everyone is likeable and nice! There are no inherently evil characters, and everyone gets along. I get stressed out by a lot of impersonal drama, and I don't enjoy reading about unlikeable people.

-The pop-culture references. Jon and Gus are nerds, and they are often referencing sci-fi movies and shows, which was fun.

Things I Didn't Like:
-The alien worlds didn't feel "alien" enough. The author often described something by comparing it to something on earth, and it felt like the world/setting was too similar. Like, they have armchairs and sliding glass doors on their patios.

-The fist bumps. Ok, this one's on me since it's literally on the cover. But I didn't realize there would be SO MANY FIST BUMPS. I found it to get a little cringey. And then I started imagining a drinking game for every scene with a fist bump.

Award winning author Anttimatti Pennanen is back with a first installment of his new series -
Black Table (The Black Table series Book 1) Trilogy where he detangled the complex and adventurous life of our protagonists Jon and Gus who are insane science fiction fans but their life takes a upside down turn when they face the death of their science hero Dr Wells, who tried to communicate his last hope to them to find something or someone from a book which hold so many secrets and mysteries about the alien and enemy world along with the Black table kept besides them which accidentally get unlocked and teleport these two in the alien world where they encounter a nail biting and life threatening adventure with monsters, unusual creatures and what not.
Will these men be able to battle with these creatures and save the universe?

In my opinion it was absolutely an idyllic new age science and adventurous fiction where an imperfect characters like Jon and Gus embrake a journey like never before just to save the universe from the evil powers.
The plot and storytelling was fresh and the character development of both Kon and Gus worked out really fine towards end.
Overall an interesting and engrossing book with a pinch of fresh contemporary romance.

This book came to my attention by one of my editing students. Jon and Gus are Finnish fanboys in the line to meet their sci-fi hero Dr Wells at Portland Comic Con when tragedy strikes - Wells lays eyes on the pair, gasps on a final request and dies of a heart attack. An improbable adventure ensues when the friends decide to investigate the writer's last words, leading them to an obscure artefact in a cave: a time-travelling, galaxy-hopping Table. Which they unwittingly activate, sending them a very long way from home and bringing them face-to-face with unexpected enemies and unanticipated allies. Between fist bumps and pop culture references, Jon and Gus uncover an ancient mystery spanning centuries and whole sectors of space, change the timeline once or twice by accident, and might even save the day.

There's a quirky Finnish flavour to the book, a self-aware enjoyment of being an English-language book not mainstream American or produced in the UK, that I think I connect with as an Australian reader. I can't decide whether it's more Hitchhiker's Guide or more Bill and Ted, but really, why not both?

Looking for Bill & Ted get Lost in Space? This book tries to deliver, but doesn't. Black Table is a science fiction novel about two friends from Finland, Jon & Gus, who go to a scifi fan con to see their favorite author and end up lost in space and time after finding an alien traveling device that looks like a black table (called a Blato).
The thing is, I really wanted to like it. I’m secretly fascinated by Finland, & I'm an avid fan of everything sci-fi. So when I read the blurb for the book, I was hooked. Who doesn’t want to get lost in space with cute, smart, sci-fi nerds with a sense of humor? And these guys have it all between them: man-buns, military experience, tech know-how, and Star Trek T-shirts! I even loved the over-the-top, way-too-often fist bumps. And good scifi humor can be hard to find. And look at that cover! So fun! I was excited.
Unfortunately, the writing was dull. There were a lot of places when I just wanted to scream: “please show me, don’t tell me!" Also, the jokes were way over used. How many times is that away-mission red-shirt joke really good for? There's lots of seemingly pointless moments with no follow through. And the surprise twist seems only half-hearted, clumsy, and barely important (though it does set everything in motion).
There’s apparently a sequel, but since I don’t care for these 2 scifi fans, I won't be reading it.

I really wanted to like this book

It sounded like a cool premise but ended up reading like Bill & Ted Go Space Tripping. Dialogue was terrible and the two characters came off as juveniles. Could have been a good story if the author I could accept if they only talked like they did when trying to speak English since it would have been a second language they rarely spoke, switching to their native tongue during conversations with each other. I could see where they wouldn’t use contractions if they didn’t often speak English.

I typically like this style of book, comic con, pop culture references, characters winging it, but somehow this one did not draw me in. Some of the background about the one of the characters military history went on for pages, I just skipped it.

Liked it a bit. Considering the author’s base I was expecting a non-American plot treatment.
