This was my first time reading this author, but it definitely won't be my last! I love second chance romances, and throw in a brothers best friend and I couldn't wait to read this book!!

Jaxon and Kayla have always had feelings for one another, and has spent a single night together many years ago.. on the same night Kayla's brother died. She feels immense guilt because Jaxon was supposed to be with him instead of her, and feels that her brother would still be alive if they hadn't acted on their feelings. She's back in their hometown again on the run from her abusive ex, and runs into Jaxon. The feelings for them both comes rushing right back, especially since Jaxon has never stopped loving her. He sees the bruises Kayla is trying to hide, and convinces her to stay with him for the time being. Jaxon is ex military, so he can definitely protect her from the abusive POS that's hellbent on ruining her. Now that they are living together, they realize they can't live without each other any longer... But will they finally have their happy ending? Or will someone always be waiting to tear them apart?

I really enjoyed this book! The suspense was very intriguing, and there was a twist i didn't see coming! I definitely recommend this book!

**I received an ARC of this book and these are my honest opinions!**

5 Star Review Bound By Secrets (Deadly Isles Special Ops) #2) by Amy McKinley
I cannot understand how I have not come across Amy McKinley before. Bound By Secrets had me invested from the first to the last chapter and I had a hard time putting this book down. I enjoyed it so much that I immediately went and one clicked the first book in the series as well.
The writing was strong and I enjoyed Ms. McKinley’s style of writing. This is Kayla and Jaxon’s second chance at love story and was an entertaining story with suspense, drama and one that had me on the edge of my seat at times.
The characters are strong and Jaxon is most definitely an alpha who knows what and who he wants and is driven and focused. Whilst Kayla is a strong heroine who is feisty, independent and sassy, there were times that the emotions almost took control.
As danger rears it’s head it is up to Jaxon to keep Kayla safe. The chemistry between them is intense and steamy and I was cheering for them to get their happily ever after.
I loved this story and cannot wait to read more in this series.

I have read a few books from this author and she continues to blow my mind. This book has my two favorite genres, second chance and military romance. This storyline exceeded all my expectations. This is the second book of the addictive series of Deadly Isles Special Ops. They don’t need to be read in order but there are previous characters in this story as well. I was so excited when I got this book I stopped everything and started to read it immediately. I could not put this book down until the end and I can’t wait to read the next book.

Kayla Kane leaves her abusive boyfriend and she has to lay low. She finds herself back in her childhood city. Kayla starts to think about her brother that died in an accident that was never solved. She is shocked when she sees her high school lover, Jaxon. Kayla can’t help but to have feelings for him but he broke her heart. She doesn’t want to get hurt again but she needs his help. Kayla knows her ex is watching her and sooner or later she will be in danger. Will Kayla and Jaxon be able to heal from the past or will there be more secrets that will ruin it all?

Bound by Secrets (Deadly Isles Special Ops, #2) by Amy McKinley was a great 5 star read.

Kayla is in a relationship that takes a dark turn and she runs, she’s done but she knows he won’t give up on her that easily. She goes home but she knows she has to stay alert. When she sees Jaxon old feelings come back.

Jaxon was Kayla’s brother's best friend and she was off limits. But when they finally gave in to their feelings tragedy hit and that was the one and only night they had. Now that she is back in town he is determined to never lose her again. He agrees to her staying with him and they quickly discover they still have the chemistry and attraction from before.

Overall this was a great read. I felt like I had several different stories going on. We have several twists and turns. There was an even bigger twist towards the end that totally threw me off and had me thinking WTH. All of the characters added a great element to the story. We get a couple of steamy moments. The author does a great job of pulling you in with her writing and I can’t wait to read more from this series. 1-click and get started today.

🌌 This book made me cry more than I expected.

The story is a second chance romance between Jaxon and Kayla, he was the best friend of his brother (who died years ago) but the secrets between them keep each other apart for years. Until she needs help because her ex boyfriend is stalking her.

As I said, this story made me cry but mostly because of Kieran. Kayla and Jaxon' story is sweet and so well written I can’t wait to read book 3 and get back to read book 1 as well.

I am loving this series so much! I really loved book 1 and couldn’t wait to dive into book 2 and I wasn’t disappointed at all! Kayla and Jaxon were just wonderful to read about, I loved them both from the very beginning and I was so invested in their story throughout. I loved that when they met again there was this lovely genuine connection between them. Both of them were really lovely characters. There were some unexpected twists in the story too which made the story exciting to read.
I am really looking forward to the next book in the series!

This book starts with Kayla Kane staring at the tv where she watches her boyfriend leaving the ring where he has just won his latest fight, but he is leaving with another woman and Kayla is enraged and plans to confront him when he gets home, but what happens when she does prompts her to leave as soon as she comes around. It isn’t the first time she has been abused by him, but this time, he took it too far and so she throws her belongings into a suitcase and bag and grabs her surfboard before putting as much distance as she can between her and the man she is going to leave behind. Jaxon Hale is tying up his stint as a beat officer with the local police where he has been working to see if it is a career he wants to follow, however, he is not happy and has decided to leave to join the team where his older brother works instead. When he goes into his local coffee shop, he is more than surprised to see Kayla, his first love and the woman he has had feelings for half his life, but she is hiding something and he won’t stop until he finds out what it is.

While they were in the coffee shop, an alert came through on Jaxon’s phone which looked like an attack, but when he arrives at the station, he realises that he is going to be getting nothing out of the officer on the case, so when his brother contacts him and confirms his suspicions, he knows that there is something else going on because he should be enjoying his honeymoon and adding into the fact that they can’t contact his brother as he is on a mission, Jaxon feels like he can’t do anything and he doesn’t like that feeling in the slightest. Meanwhile, Kayla goes to visit her parents, but when she gets there, she discovers that they are selling the house and Kayla isn’t happy that she will be losing another bit of her childhood and the memories forged there with her dead brother, but she tries to accept this unwelcome bit of news, but when she heads upstairs to start helping them to pack, she decides to start in her brothers room which she knows is going to be the hardest one to pack away and this is solidified when the memories come flooding back. Later on, she hears another voice and goes downstairs to find that Jaxon is there and it turns out his parents are moving to his old condo and that he came over to find out about paint choices so he could start redecorating so it is ready for them and remembering that there is a spare room, Kayla realises that this is the perfect answer to the situation with Roy and asks if she can stay there and help with the painting, Jaxon agrees, however, she is not sure how staying in the same house as him is going to work seeing as she has had the biggest crush on him for half her life.

As the time passes and Kayla and Jaxon spend more time with each other, they both realise that the time has come to talk about what happened in their past, but also about the present as well and the more they start to learn about the secrets surrounding them, the closer they become, but are the secrets they hold going to be a barrier they cannot surpass, or will they be able to build the future they have always wanted together? As the tension rises and patterns emerge, can the two work together to solve the mysteries surrounding them? This is a fast paced romance with secrets and revelations abound within it, but that is what will keep you reading until the very end.

What is there NOT to love about this wonderful novel? I for one was able to jump right into this story that truly captures my heart.

First off I must say i am a lover of romantic suspense and this one went above and beyond I found and I loved the suspenseful moments for sure.

From the first bit of the story I wanted more. I wanted questions answers even though I knew it would be a bit of a wait for those to come to me. But that was the joy of the book, it kept me interested and I wanted to keep reading to find out more info!

I love the characters the story surfaced around. Kayla and Jaxon. These two to me at first could NOT be more alike. But as I read on its true, they were more alike than I actually saw at first. They both came with a past. And I will say it wasn't always pretty. But their qualities that were alike as well as their differences made them who they are. From differences being cast aside to finding the very common ground they walk on they found a shared ground and a story being written between them that they never actually thought possible. I think to both of them it was shocking and beautiful at the same time,.

To me this story really was wonderful as it wasn't just about love, not just about second chances, and not just about allowing yourself to feel something you put up walls to make sure you don't. It also had the pure danger or not knowing can this love be safe? Will it protect me? Will our love be the downfall of us both?

This was on the line for Kayla and Jaxon pretty much at every turn. Wondering if they were safe from the danger or was it just the beginning?

This was a wonderful fast read for me. It didn't keep me just interested, it made me give up my sleep to see what would would happen next. I live with no regrets!

This was my first time and I know for a fact in the future I will gladly re read this novel. Its a story I wont forget and I do truly want to revisit again soon!

Do yourself a favor and read this amazing book. I assure you on my heart you will not be disappointed.
Wonderful work Amy McKinley :)

Bound by Secrets, (Deadly Isles Special Ops #2) is the second book in the Deadly Isles Special Ops series.
After reading the first book I couldn’t wait to get my hands on the second, and I was not in any way disappointed with the read. The author has done it again, bringing the characters to life and making you feel like you are sitting right there alongside them!
This second book in the series features Kayla Kane, a book reviewer, and Jaxon Hale former Navy SEAL. The two know each other well, he is her deceased brother’s best friend from high school, and she is the “kid” sister he never looked twice at until they shared a single night together after graduation. That night everything changed for both, and secrets were kept.
A decade later, Kayla is on the run from an abusive ex-boyfriend and needs a safe place to hide. Not wanting to risk her family’s lives, she runs into Jaxon and asks to borrow his spare room until she can get herself settled.
Sharing accommodations turns out to be more difficult that these two thought, and secrets are revealed that bring out hurt and pain but are the only way the 2 can move forward.
Just like the first, this book has many twists and turns. I enjoyed every turn it took and did not see what was coming, which is one of the things I love about this author! I also enjoyed that the characters from the first book popped in every once and a while to tie the series together. I thought this was a great way that the author was able to make the books a series without the same consistent characters. It really allows the reader to enter a new story with old favorites included.
Overall, this is a great suspense romance novel that I really enjoyed, and cannot wait to read the conclusion and find out what happens! I think I may have found a new favorite author!

This was yet another page turner by Amy McKinley and book two in her ‘Deadly Isles Special Ops Series’. It can be read as a standalone story but I recommend the previous book, ‘Twisted Secrets’ as it was a great read. In ‘Bound by Secrets’ book reviewer Kayla Kane is on the run from an abusive boyfriend. Not wanting to put her parents at risk she goes to her brother’s best friend and former Navy SEAL Jaxon for a safe place to stay. Jaxon also happens to be the man that she has been attracted to since for ever and who she shared one unforgettable summer night with a decade ago. Jaxon Hale has never found a woman who compares to Kayla and it was only a promise that he made to Kayla’s brother that stopped him from telling her how he felt about her but now that she’s come back into his life he’s determined to have a relationship with her. He just needs to keep her safe first from her stalker of an ex boyfriend, and so asks Kayla to stay with him. However, they soon discover that living together will be more complicated then they thought as their mutual attraction cannot be denied. When tensions, painful memories and secrets are all bought up and the threat to Kayla gets nearer the couple risk loosing each other for good.
This novel has a fast paced storyline and a gripping narrative which had me hooked from the start. I liked the main characters and the chemistry between Kayla and Jaxon really came across and the second chance at love element added to the overall story. The plot had plenty of twists and turns that I was kept guessing until the end. This fairly short novel had a mix of romance, drama, suspense and mystery and I found myself completely immersed in the story.

I received a free ARC copy in exchange for my honest review. This is my own opinion and was not influenced by anyone.

Bound By Secrets by Amy McKinley held me from page one. This series Deadly Isles Special Ops has me reading as soon as the book is available. The plot is full of intrigue, danger, secrets and twists. Bound By Secrets is book 2 in the series and is best read after the book one. There are elements that wrap up with each book but there is one thread that is in them all.

Kayla is fleeing an abusive relationship and heads home to hide. While there she runs into Jaxon. He was and still is the man she loves, her first love. He was her brother Kieran's best friend.

Jaxon has been filling in for Kayla's father as a police officer now that he has retired from the navy. He loves Kayla and has for a long time. He first noticed Kayla when she was a freshman in high school and he was a junior. They had one night together before all heck broke loose and Kieran was killed. Now secrets, regrets, anger and guilt is left for Kayla and Jaxon. Jaxon makes it his mission to help Kayla break through the sadness that has her locked into place so she can see his love.

Once Kayla's walls start to come down she shares her relationship of an abusive boyfriend with Jaxon. He will protect her with everything he is.

I will say the twist in this book surprised me. Usually I see them coming but pleasantly Amy Mckinley crafted the story that had me looking elsewhere. I love the long running thread regarding leaks and espionage. It adds to the mystery of the story. The book ending had me tears. Perfect, just perfect. I can't wait to see where the series goes.

Bound by Secrets (Deadly Isles Special Ops, #2) by Amy McKinley Have you ever had that relationship that didn’t quite fit into your life when you thought it should? Have you ever had that relationship that you knew was bad for you but kept going back until the final straw broke?

Jaxon Hale is a former Navy SEAL with an honorable discharge after an injury on active duty. Jaxon is filling in for Captain Kane of the Honolulu Police to find a path that he can live with after the military. Kayla Kane returns to Honolulu after an encounter with her live-in boyfriend, Roy. Jaxon and Kayla share a past, but secrets have marred that past since Jaxon was a senior and Kayla was a freshman. After all this time, Jaxon and Kayla’s paths collide again. Trying to keep their families safe from hidden forces and working through the pain they both share, will Jaxon and Kayla finally find a place in their hearts for each other?

I truly loved this book. It’s full of passion, suspense, and real-life issues. Family plays a major part in the lives of both characters. Rebuilding after drastic life changes and finding a place to call home is something that I connected with, and other readers should too.

Most readers don’t like to start a series in the middle, but this book is a true stand-alone. It mentions characters from the first book but can definitely be read without reading the previous book.

This is the second book in the Deadly Isles Special Ops series. Its Jaxon and Kayla's story. You can read and enjoy this story without reading the first book but you will come across characters from the first book since it was about one of Jaxon’s brothers and there is a secondary storyline that starts in book one and is ongoing in this book. The story is well written and entertaining. This book is second chance romance. It’s fast paced, steamy and filled with action. I can’t wait for book three.

Jaxon and Kayla had one night together, that night was the night her brother Kieran died and she blames Jaxson because he was supposed to be with Kieran instead of with her. Jaxson hasn’t forgot Kayla and over the years no woman has measured up to her. She was his friend’s sister and he promised to stay away from her but his friend is dead and Jaxon isn’t going to let that vow stand in his way anymore. He needs to convince Kayla to forgive him and to a chance on a relationship. Kayla’s on the run from her abusive ex. Jaxon’s determined to keep her safe and convince her that a relationship with him is a good idea but they both have secrets they're keeping from each other. Will they be able to find happiness together?

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

The addition starts with the book cover….yeah…yeah…yeah don’t judge a book by its cover they say ….well we all do it and this one here it is the scratch to your itch or better yet the filling to your oreos! Speaking of filling…..wait, that’s for later. Within the first chapters you get the panoramic view of whom you’re dealing with! By the time you’ve figured out who is who and who to like and dislike, you’re already hooked, and you may as well give up the fight and prepare yourself for an all-nighter!
Can’t say I didn’t warn you.
There are so many secrets, guilt, anger, danger, suspense, chemistry, action the list goes on and on and they will have you up all night trying to read to the very last page. Kayla is on the run from an abusive jerk of an ex and she will not involve her family as she refuses to have another person; she loves taken from her so she goes to the one person she knows can help her. She needed somewhere safe to stay so she reaches out to Jaxon. She has history he is/was her brothers’ best friend but will their ghost from their past come back to hunt them or hold them back. Living in a small space brings back all the old feelings and the chemistry isn’t lost nor is the attraction lost either but to move forward secrets must be exposed but will they stop them or free them and is there a HEA for them?

I could NOT put this book down either!!

Kayla
On the run after her abusive ex boyfriend almost killed her, she runs to the one place she knows home. She had to be smart about though, and running into Jaxon was not part the plan. Seeing Jax after all this time brought feelings she never let go off. Not only was he her brother's best friend, but he was her first everything. But staying with jax just might the safest thing for her to do but also the hardest, having to the face the past and coming clean about what's really going on with her. Trusting Jax won't be easy but she never stopped loving and he always did make her feel her safe. But letting all her feelings and truths out, will it be damning or can Jax keep her safe?

Jaxon
He never thought he would see the girl who stole his heart when they were just kids but here she is back home, but something is wrong, she's covering bruises and lying, and she's scared. He will do everything in his power to protect her. He let her go so many years ago and he wasn't going to let her slip away again. He will protect her at all costs. But will she still have him after all the secrets come out?

I loved the second chance/brother's best friend romance. I love the suspense and how love con conquer all, if you are wiling to trust again.

I've really become a HUGE fan of Amy McKinley the past year because she writes hot military & ex-military men with a kicker of suspense which is my jam. Kayla's in a relationship with a fighter, and it becomes apparent that she needs to break it off, but when she tries to do so, yeah, that fighter acted like they were in the ring together so she needs to find a place to lay low because she can't put her parents at risk, plus he doesn't seem to have any issue with trying to kill her. Their family has already been through enough after the death of her older brother so she doesn't say anything when she gets there. She ends up staying with Jaxon Hale, her brother's best friend & the love of her life until he messes it up. He's working as police now that he's an ex-SEAL, and he's determined to get her back. They're working towards that when Kayla's ex-boyfriend comes for her but will he keep her safe?! I'm telling you that Bound by Secrets is a fast paced story that came out of the gate exciting with twists that had the f-bombs dropping, but then there was the ultimate twist that I didn't see coming whatsoever which put me in my happy place! I CANNOT WAIT for the next book and HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND TO ALL!

Bound By Secrets is the second book in the Deadly Isles Special Ops series by Amy McKinley. As with all Ms. McKinley’s work, this is really well-written- a fantastic romantic suspense story full of secrets, heartache, pain, guilt, anger, angst, danger, violence, drama, chemistry, sizzle, intrigue, tension, mystery, action, twists and turns, and second chances.
Kayla desperately needed a place to stay, somewhere safe where she wouldn’t be found by her abusive ex- so that’s how she comes to be staying with Jaxon Hale, her brothers’ best friend. But Jaxon and Kayla have a history together- one weighed by heartache, pain, and loss. The budding possibility that began to bloom, was destroyed in one foul swoop- leaving them both longing, all this time, for what could have been. Sharing his home together brings old feelings and memories bubbling to the surface- and complicates matters even more. With danger circling, and secrets being exposed- not to mention their simmering chemistry adding to all the tension- things take an intense turn- with the story holding me firmly in its grip right till the very last word.
Loving this series! Can’t wait to see where we go from here. Bring on Book #3!

Thank you, Amy McKinley!

When Kayla needs to leave her abusive relationship, where can she go that will not cause problems with her or her family.

Kayla is running away from an abusive relationship and decides the best place to go is home, the only problem is she does not want to bring the unwanted attention that her ex will bring if he finds out where she has escaped to. Only once she is home he has also returned, Jaxon should be here Kayla had thought she had got him out of her system, her first love and mistake. But, will she be able to protect her family and her heart.

Jaxon has retired from the navy and has decided to go back to his home town to help out with the local police department. Although he is trying to piece his life together, he not expecting to see Kayla, the one that got away.

The story is a great page turner from the beginning till the last page will have you at the edge of your seat. The chemistry between these two characters jumps off the page and will have you routing for them at every turn. The story was well developed and constructive with the twists within the pages. This not the first book I have read by this author and it will not be the last, I can't wait until I read the next book in this series.

The second in the Deadly Isles- Special Ops series, Bound by Secrets is just as exciting as its predecessor! Once again, we are in the beautiful city of Honolulu, this time with Jaxon Hale and Kayla Kane, his high school best friend’s little sister. Kayla is outrunning her abusive ex-boyfriend when she runs into her childhood crush while returning to her parents’ home; Jaxon is working as an interim-police officer while Kayla’s father- the police chief- recovers from heart surgery, and is pleasantly surprised that she is back in town, but worried about the man who hurt and scared her so badly. Bound by Secrets follows the two former friends and lovers while they work through their shared history and heartache, and through the current threat to her life.
Just as before, I could not put down Amy McKinley’s book once I started!! The characters are richly created, and the scenery is as beautiful as in reality. There is a bit of cliché in a girl and her late brother’s best friend finally coming together after years of hurt between them, but the impact that the late Keiran Kane had on his friends and family adds a kind of sweet twist on the tale. I’m excited for the last installment to come out in March!!

Bound by Secrets (Deadly Isles Special Ops, #2) by Amy McKinley

5 out of 5 stars
This was a great story I just started reading this authors books and I am hooked. The characters are well written and amazing. The story line was awesome and could have come off the headlines in the news. The detail description was like I was in Honolulu

Kayla Kan is on the run from an abusive relationship needs a place to lay low, but she won’t risk her parents’ lives. To keep her family safe, she needs to find a good hide out and here comes Former Navy SEAL Jaxon Hale her brother’s best friend.
Jaxon Hale has never found a woman who could compare to Kayla and the single night they shared the summer after graduation. So, when she comes back into his life after a decade, he knows he won’t let her go and vows to make their relationship last this time.
But Kayla and Jaxon soon realize that sharing a living space doesn’t come without complications. Especially when their past shadows their every turn, and tensions escalate as they dive headfirst into painful memories for a chance at a future.
Can They over come their past and move on? With the uncertainty with the ex-stalker boyfriend treat looming over them can Jaxon keep Kayla safe.
I highly recommend this book….

WOW just WOW! This is a full length Romantic Suspense novel. Be a great reader, by reading this book in the order of the series. This is one you won't want to put down.

Kayla Kane must escape the abusive relationship is in. Running as far away as she can. She heads home and soon realizes her parents could be at risk. She goes to where she can get help. Her brother's best friend and former Navy Seal Jaxon Hale. Jaxon has never found a woman like the beautiful Kayla Hale. He has loved her since childhood. Now she is back and nothing will stop him from helping her. Will he reveal the untold secrets around her brother's death? Or Will they let their hearts be their guide? Or will her ex win her back? So many questions and no spoilers.

Amy McKinley has done it again. She has brought those hot steamy Navy Seals and built her story around them. This story builds intensely around the Navy Seals and the people who need them. I absolutely fell in love with the characters. The strong independant Kayla who never gives up. Jaxon who is ready to fight for his end results. Welcome to the rollercoaster ride of emotions that you will enjoy in this Romance. Well Done Amy McKinley! Well Done!

After falling in love with the first book how could I not chase the paths of Xander’s brothers. Though these are stand-alone books they do weave together the characters that you come to know and love through the series. This book made me laugh, cry, and get angry at some of the characters and if that isn’t the telling of a good book then I do not know what is.
Kayla returns to her hometown after a life-threatening experience with her abusive boyfriend, hoping to hide away for a while and letting things blow over. What she doesn’t expect is to see her past crush, one-time lover Jaxon. She is soon forced to face not only her feelings for the Ex-Navy Seal but also the past tragedy of losing her brother. With her ex closing in Kayla realizes her one haven is staying with Jaxon in his condo. That is until her ex shows up threatening her loved ones and bringing to light the secrets from the past that can’t stay buried. Can Jaxon save his relationship with Kayla when his secrets surface or will he lose her forever? This book has more twists and turns that a roller coaster and is designed to leave you on the edge of your seat. You may lose sleep while reading this book simply because you cannot put it down, it is just that good and worth the read.

Be prepared to leak a few tears here and there. So we meet Jaxon and Kayla who have known each other since they are kids. So we have a best friends sister trope her. Only it has a twist to it. It is full of dangers. So we know that they both tried dating when they were in school. Unfortunately tragedy strikes and things change. Kayla is still trying to recover from the tragedy even though it happened years ago. She tries to move on with her life but her current boyfriend needs to go. Jaxon is no longer with the navy and trying to figure out what he is going to do. He fills in for Kayla's dad who is a police officer. Now remember I said that he is no longer in the navy, yeah well there seems to be some trouble going on that is effecting a lot of active and inactive members. So Jaxon is trying to find out what is going on. He also knows that something is going on with Kayla. Can he get to the bottom of things? Will Kayla be able to move past her grief? Will she find out what really happens. This was very tense, suspenseful and we get a happily ever after. I loved their story.

After reading the first book in this series "Twisted Secrets" I knew I had found a new author that was going to become another favourite and I wasn't disappointed with this second offering in the series While each book is about a separate couple and can be read as a stand alone there is a underlying thread that runs throughout and anyway they are so good why wouldn't you read them all

Jaxon and Kayla where something special to one another when they where younger but he was also her brothers best friend so when tragedy struck him it destroyed them all. Jaxon has since retired from the Seals and is working with he police Kayla has moved on and managed to get herself tangled with a fighter who when he doesn't get his own way uses her as a punching bag She has fled from him but knows she can't put her parents in danger by going to them so she asks for Jaxon's help. Spending time together has them reconnecting and maybe a chance at a future until her ex reappears on the scene Can Jaxon keep her safe and can they build a life together Be ready for an adrenaline fuelled ride with this couple

Bound by Secrets (Deadly Isles Special Ops Book 2)
Amy McKinley

4 out of 5 Stars

Kayla starts her journey on the run from a possessive, cheating boyfriend. Kayla runs to the one place she thinks she can be safe, home. Home isn’t as safe as she thinks. A casual run in with Jaxon, her high school crush, at her favorite coffee spot leaves her mind spinning with feelings from the past and memories she doesn’t want. Text messages and a frightening phone call from the ex makes Kayla believe that the safest place for her physically is the most dangerous place for her emotionally.

As Kayla and Jaxon spend time together, Kayla works through her grief for the brother that was tragically lost in an car accident. Kayla discovers that taking chances emotionally may lead her to the greatest love she won’t let herself have.

There are twists and secrets that lead to discoveries that release Kayla from the restraints she has put on herself when it comes to Jaxon. Will she lose everything just when things are aligning for what she has always wanted, forever with Jaxon?

A page-turner that will have you wondering to the final secret has come to light.

This quick, addicting, emotional rollercoaster of a book hit me right in the feels-and I mean in all the feels. I was angry, cried tears of sorrow, cried tears of happiness, followed by more tears of grieving acceptance, then throw in a bit of intrigue, compassion, and more tears for good measure.

Amy wrote a fantastic book layered with genius plot lines so simply laid out and well executed that the story came out seamlessly. It seems strange to recommend a book about an abused woman on the run that seeks help from her deceased brother's best friend (that has family ties with special ops) to overcome her abuse, secrets of the past, and dangers of the future; oh and let's not forget that because the author plays expertly on your heartstrings, you'll cry, a lot, but here we are The book was splendid.

Great books like this transport you to another place and allow you to see and feel what the characters are experiencing. They can even leave an impact on you and maybe remind you that life can be short so make it sweet. I'm so impressed with this author's abilities, I can't wait to binge read the next book in the series.

3.5*

This was an enjoyable read. Whilst I don’t truly think it’s a stand-alone as there is a storyline that’s running through from the previous book that is still unresolved, it does have a completed story of its own and a HEA

Kayla returns home after her boyfriend attacks her, but realises she can’t stay with her parents in case he comes for her. Her old love and brothers BF is now a police officer so she concocts a reason to stay with him. But soon has to really explain what’s going on. Whilst this is happening they are also rehashing their relationship and what happened around the death of her brother, an old story that is also concluded.
Again with this book, the main storyline focuses around Kayla and not Jaxon, he is an important character but other than the running storyline the book doesn’t really delve too deeply into him as a character in his own right.
Still an enjoyable read through

Bound by Secrets is book two in the Deadly Isles Special Ops series by Amy McKinley. This author has mastered the military romance, and stamped her unique writing style all over, making the barre being set incredibly high for other authors of this genre. The characters are always intriguing, mesmirising, strong, courageous and charismatic. And that is just the leading men!! The women are brave, compassionate, understanding, resilient and unbreakable. Brave men need these powerhouse women, and Amy McKinley provides a plethora of action and adventure and enough passion to ignite the pages. Bound by Secrets was a memorable mix of attraction, angst, aggression and apprehension. Kayla and Jaxon share a past and he wants a future. Kayla is running scared and Jaxon has his work cut out trying to prove they are meant to be. Jaxon is what every man wants to be and Kayla is an inspiration and someone to look up to. Neither are perfect, but they are perfect to escape with. A classic story of love that is both edgy and addictive. 4 stars.

I couldn’t pick this book up fast enough after reading the first in this series and absolutely loving it! I enjoyed this one almost as much, McKinley’s writing style is so easy to read and her writing just flows effortlessly which makes for a really relaxing reading experience, despite the fact the plots are so fast paced and thrilling.

This plot was less thrilling that Twisted Secrets for me personally, which is the only reason I have given a lower rating than the previous book. I - again - really enjoyed reading about Jason and Kayla and I thought Jaxon’s character in particular was very well explored. I would have enjoyed a little more background on Kayla. Having said that, I loved the storyline involving her and Kieran. And the final paragraph of the book genuinely brought tears to my eyes and really moved me.

I think if you want a book that has lots of twists, some steamy romance scenes and a thrilling plot then Amy McKinley is definitely a good author to get to know. I will absolutely be continuing this series and cannot wait to see what the characters will have to face next.

Bound by Secrets is the 2nd book in Amy McKinley's Deadly Isles Special Ops series. It is pretty similar theme as the 1st book. I really love these books, and cannot wait for them to merge into the Gray Ghosts series. While you do not have to read in order, you really should read book 1 as well, because they are both great. This story focuses on Jaxon, another Hale brother, and Kayla. Kayla is escaping a bad relationship, one she nearly died from. Upon returning back home, she runs into her childhood crush. Despite her feelings for him, he is the best person to stay with, and keep her safe. The characters both have good backstory and their chemistry is great. I love that they have a history and are friends before lovers. McKinley is so good at keeping things a secret, and keeping the readers hooked throughout. I did not piece together all the pieces of this puzzle until the very end. I did not see in coming, much like book one. I highly recommend this story, and cannot wait to read book 3, which I imagine tells the story of the last Hale brother.
