“Warwick, someday you will become king and you will have the power to make changes. You can keep the people from suffering, you can create a better world. Be a leader that is respected and not feared.”
“The King believes that fear is what these people need.”
She turns in the tub to face me. “No, fear is what causes people to act irrationally. It causes death and destruction. Educate these people, teach them the proper ways not force them. There is a difference.”
“I promise you darling, when I take control changes will be made. Our children’s generation will be educated, I will fight to win respect instead of instilling fear. The poor will stop bleeding.” Tears spill from her eyes as I pull her in for a hug. I hold my own tears back. This woman would have made a damn fine queen, one that was respected and loved by the people.
Queen Regent had so much potential, but the execution completely missed the mark for me. The pacing dragged, the plot felt messy and unfocused, and the characters never developed beyond surface-level traits. I kept waiting for the story to click or for the main character to become someone I could root for, but it just never happened.
The writing style was inconsistent, sometimes overly flowery, other times strangely flat, and major events were rushed while unimportant scenes went on forever. By the halfway point, it felt like a chore to finish, and the ending didn’t reward the effort at all.
Overall, this book was frustrating, confusing, and far from the immersive fantasy experience I hoped for. I rarely leave 1-star reviews, but this one genuinely left me disappointed.
There was a lot I really enjoyed in this short read. The plot was engaging and full of action, and I liked the twist at the end. I loved Dove’s strong and fierce personality, and I thought she was a great match for Prince Warwick. The setting was a nice change of pace – an interesting combination of modern and historical genres. Some of the tropes were pretty standard – enemies-to-lovers, the crazy girlfriend/wife/significant other, the jerk-realizing-he’s-a-jerk-and-becomes-turns-a-personality-180 – but overall, it was a fun and quick read. Great way to spend an afternoon!
Thank you Voracious Readers and IE Michaels for my copy! All opinions and thoughts are my own.
I really enjoyed this book. It takes place in the unspecified future where everthing has resorted back to kingdoms and monarchies. Dove the heroine is placed in an awful situation and along the way falls for the Prince Warwick. They can't be together and their trust between each other is very fragile but they have a strong connection that is not easy to resist. Dove takes matter into her own hands and shows how capable she really is. The end has a twist that you don't expect. A great page turner!
Interesting book. Kind of takes place in a dystopian future where a Monarchy took over in place of where Democratic societies used to be. It is kind of like reading a historical romance but also has modern items since it is in the future. It can be read in a weekend, so if you are looking for a good weekend read, I'd suggest this book.
A great story that has plenty of twists in it that you don't see coming. I do wish the story was a little longer so that I could get to know the characters better but it didn't hurt the storyline whatsoever. Great read!
“I think Warwick knows me better than that. I’m not that stupid.”
“I always tell him that fear makes people do irrational shit.”
“I told him that in the bathtub once. Three weeks later I’m pregnant and cut off from life.”
“He’s a good person Dove. He’s just been put into shitty situations.”
“Your situation is what you make of it. He may be a good person but he is letting the situations control him. He has options, ways out, opportunities to make changes. He doesn’t choose to take those. My only option was to choose a baby or choose death. To be honest, I chose wrong because I saw the good in a man that will never use it. Now that a baby is involved I can’t choose death.”
