Joanie

Rate this book
They say you should never meet your heroes…so you should *definitely* not have a one-night stand with one...

But Kristen Perry never got that memo. She’s been madly in love with legendary rocker Joanie for as long as she can remember. Joanie is one of the living legends of rock music, a pioneer for women in the music industry for decades and a lesbian icon. Her music gave Kristen the strength to keep going...so when Joanie announces dates for her farewell tour, of course Kristen’s going to be there.

And when Kristen finds her way backstage, it just must be her lucky night. For somehow, impossibly, she meets Joanie herself...

What follows next is a wild, romantic night of adventure, rescue, passion and a love story that, if both women can find the courage to open their hearts, could change their lives forever…

The whole story is told from Kristen’s perspective. She’s 21, completely starstruck, and so sweet that I just wanted to protect her, especially when she learns the real deal about how Joanie is looking for her bed partner of the night. That said, I also can understand why she was swept up in the moment, especially once she was around Joanie. I’m glad that Kristen also demonstrates she’s very capable and has strong ethics (I won’t get into why, but just know that I loved this part so hard), because it shows there’s more to her than her identity as a Joanie fan. We also learn fairly late in the story that Kristen is autistic, and while I can’t speak to the authenticity of the autism rep, I’m mentinoing it since I know many readers are looking for that.

Ooohhh, Joanie!

We've all been there. We've all developed a crush on someone famous, followed their career, hung on to every word they spoke or sang. We've fantasized about being with them romantically and some of us have even planned what our wedding would be like, right down to the wedding night. I know I have. Heart captured the essence of what it's like to be young and in love with an idol. A God, if you will. Kristen was no different when it came to her feelings toward the rock Goddess, Joanie. Immense talent aside and her uber fame, Joanie was delicious in every sense of the word. She was the kind of woman who did everything effortlessly. She prowled, stalked, and sometimes even growled like a wild animal on the hunt for its prey. Hidden deep beneath her sexual prowess and larger-than-life presence, there lied a soft and vulnerable woman clawing for the surface to finally be seen and heard as the true woman she was and not for Joanie the rocker with countless notches on her belt. This story took place over the span of twenty-four hours, minus the time jump in the epilogue. More than mid-way through, I forgot it was still the same day, because so much had happened between Joanie and Kristen. Heart did an amazing job taking us on a highly emotional rollercoaster ride within those twenty-four hours. We watched a fantasy turn into a reality turn into a love story. I thank the author for writing this fun and sexy story, and for reminding me what it was like to have a crush.

I recommend this new author!

DNF. It just made me feel too awkward. I get there is probably some sort of redemption, but you have to like the characters and story enough, and I just didn't.

Joanie is a some sort of Rock Goddess who is 'middle-aged' and retiring. Kristin is 21 and has been obsessed with her basically her whole life. She even confesses she knows everything about her, has watched all her videos and interviews, read every article and magazine piece. Even knows her height and measurements. Yeah it's that level of obsession. It gets a little creepy IMHO. It doesn't come off as cute and naive as I'm sure the author intended. (The girl literally turns up in a purple unicorn shirt for a concert, and even mentions how different she is compared to the other fans, and how she is IN LOVE with Joanie... literally.)

It is a stark contrast to Joanie, who exudes sexual energy onstage but states she has never fallen in love. She has her bodyguards trawl through the crowds at her concerts, to bring a group of girls backstage for her 'pick from' in some sort of Rock'n'Roll bachelorette for them to participate in, with NDA's signed even before they meet. All these ladies seem eager to please and proclaim how big of fans they are. A fist fight even breaks out amongst two of the girls who are fawning over the idea of sleeping with Joanie and challenging each other.

Again it's supposed to come off as "oh those wacky rockstars and their antics!" but to me it just came off as gross and manipulative. It didn't paint the afamed Joanie in a very good light IMHO. Neither did Kristins own eagerness to happily join in with this apparent regularly honoured tradition of fanboi fuck buddies. All I kept thinking was I sure hope she's having safe sex, since it appears she fucking a new girl (if not multiple girls) every damn night. *shudder*

I'm not trying to slut shame anyone, but it's hard to change your own reactions to certain things, and then be expected to care for characters who are exemplifying things you are not comfortable with.
It even states at one point in a praising way that Joanie "is just doing the same as what other male rockstars have done time and time again!". Um sorry but those types of explanations said under the guise of feminism (that's word is infact used in the same passage to justify this) to me, just make me wanna say that you don't have to join the rabble and sink down to their level. We can do better. So I knew I was floundering then with the narrative being presented.

I stopped reading at Chapter 6, about 24% in when I just knew I wasn't going to like anything more to come out of these all too bizarre scenarios and characters and their faulty ideals and justifications for things.

I'm sure others would like this, and as I said I have faith that the author has intended a real romance and love story with redemption inside - but I couldn't commit, at all. So I best leave it to others to enjoy.

Oh dear, not my sort of tale / writing at all. Not quite sure why I read it- but please ignore this review as I am clearly not the target audience.

They make music together

Meeting your hero in this story may not be a bad thing. Kristen and Joanie have both had a hard time growing up. This is a very good age gap romance story and I enjoyed reading it. Kristen may be young but she has a huge heart and great advice for her hero.

Different

This is a very different book then I'm used to reading. I really, really enjoyed it. Two wounded souls begin to heal when that one unique person sees you and draws you close. It's the perfect HEA.

The beginning of this romance is hampered by the crass "pick a one-night stand from the holding tank" setup. Once the story line moves past the meet-not-so-cute phase things are more interesting. The main characters are each dealing with some issues and as a couple they find a sense of mututal peace and belonging. Almost from the beginning their emotional connection is even stronger than their sexual one. Their ultimate HEA feels right; even so the "holding tank" leaves a pretty sour taste.

This was the first book by Bridget Essex or rather Lucy Heart I‘ve read for a long time. I was very excited about it. In the end it was beautifully written as all her stories are. Two lost souls find their way to each other and there were puppies. So what could I want more. 😊

Kristen did most of the 'talking' in this book and Joanie somewhat, but not fully, was in the background. I learn later in the book how Joanie's music saved/protected/spoke to Kristen when life was overwhelming and threatening for her. I never learn Joanie's dark past and appreciated how the author didn't dwell in that space but let Joanie explain that music was her escape. The story moved through one night and a day and was well written with just the right amount of groupie and assistant drama.

A animal shelter volunteer and a rock star find something in common!

Is it the normal case of a rock star to fight against the system and family to get their viewpoint noticed? A chance meeting at a outdoor concert sends the shelter volunteer scrambling her get autism in check to find the battle behind the singer's music. What the author has created is another way to manage autism and not make it the cornerstone of a story. Very nicely written! Enjoy!

A lovely read that's full of surprises and heart

I didn't expect to feel so many emotions when I first picked up this book. I also didn't expect to see so much of myself in Kristen. I couldn't put it down.

Excellent

An excellent book. Well written with interesting characters, cute puppies and an hea. Good mix of tension and doubt without being difficult to read which I really appreciate with all the fear and uncertainty in the world.
