It wasn't the same. The characters, their personality, and the way they were drawn, the story itself, and the stakes involved...I was underwhelmed by it all. Before I began reading the manga, I was under the impression that Kuklo would be the one to design the 3DM gear. Figuring out that that wasn't happening further dimmed my interest. But that can't be chalked against the manga so we'll move past that. The tone of this series is rather dull and lifeless. I mean, I get why it has to be all serious and brooding, but the original manga managed that without boring me to tears. It was action-packed, exciting, funny, and gave me so much feels. Before the Fall was lustreless. If there was anything that I could have wished for in a prequel, it would have been the development of the 3D manoeuver gear, for sure. That part aside, the numerous side-tracks and sub-plots, though well-executed and well-placed weren't terribly interesting. Even the device's development wasn't interesting. There was something missing throughout. It didn't make me feel. I disliked the character design. Apart from the 5 boys that Kuklo and Cardina befriended in the latter half of the manga, the ones in Rosa's group, every single man in the manga looked the same. Even the freaking titans all looked the same. Take away Captain Carlo's beard thingy and make his eyebrows more pointy and you have Xavi. Make Xavi's hair longer and you'll have Angel. Add curls to Angel's hair and you'll be looking at Cardina. Make the hair darker and spikier and you'll have Kuklo. Ugh. I'm sure I had a few other problems but I'll just leave it here. To sum it up, I didn't like it nearly as much as I had hoped.
I'm not really satisfied with how Xavi's story arc developed and ended, but this story was a great insight into the early process of the survey corps before Eren's time.
but I liked this story overall, the sweet romance of sharle and kuklo, the friendships, the portrayl of blleankess and darkness, the underground and vertical manuever device portrayl.
I expected WAY more tragedy if I’m being honest and I lowkey wanted it- and a lot more masterful plot like regular AOT- but it was allllll worth it for that very last panel 😌☺️
finally finished the whole series and oh my god it’s so cute. i feel like that’s such a weird way to describe attack on titan of all things but i absolutely love kuklo, cardina and sharle 🥺they’re such adorable protagonists. The manga almost reminds me of one of those early 2000s romance shojo mangas but with the constant looming threat of getting eaten alive by a titan 😁 kuklo and sharle are such a cute ship and im so happy they’re canon although i wish they would’ve been less blockheads about it and had more relationship building moments. (sidenote who tf gets married at 15??) i wish they would’ve ended on less of a cliffhanger about their relationship but otherwise i feel like the manga wraps up their story and the main story very nicely. the only thing that annoyed me was how besides the creation of the odm gear, it had no ties to the original manga. I would’ve loved to see some familiar last names, even if they’re very distantly related. I really don’t get why this manga isn’t talked about. It’s got a really interesting premise and really adorable characters, although i can see how the sort-of shojo spin may not appeal to those looking for traditional attack on titan in this prequel. overall i loved it and i wish it was talked about more.

Overall the series was mid. Started really weak but then got better but not to a point of being "great" just ... okay. It has a some good characters and interesting stories. The last arc which was probably the best, should've been longer and the ending was so rushed that I would call it downright bad. It was okay but I'll never read it again.
loved how things didn’t go 100% according to plan but still worked out~ the ending was great too. Xavi and his lil personality disorder like I am confused but whatever ig
The conclusion of this prequel is at hand and all I can say is, they definitely rushed these last few chapters. Not only in terms of the plot (they killed the titan way too fast) but also in the epilogue. Dammit! I wanted something that connected Kuklo to Eren! That would've been epic. I wanted something that brought up the whole Ackermann thing!
Either way, this series was an amazing ride, especially now that the original series is close to being over. Overall score: 4.5/5.
I appreciated that this had a satisfying ending with closure, although it felt a very rushed. I'd hoped and expected more from the final showdown between two of the main characters, and I wanted more detail about the "happy ending" the characters received. I'm still glad I read the series, but I wish that there had been much more fleshed out for this final volume.
Quite a rushed, empty and disappointing ending. One character goes through one of the weirdest retcons I've ever seen. It also plays way too safely for its' own good.
Cut from a titan's stomach after his cultist mother was eaten alive when he was still growing inside her womb, Kuklo bore the cursed reputation of being the son of a titan. He was locked in a cage as a toddler and treated as a circus freak to be paraded around. After years of abuse on the streets he was sold to the Inocencio royal family to become the plaything of their cruel son Xavi. Never taught how to speak or shown the love of another human being, Kuklo's life seemed destined to meet a gloomy end. That was until Sharle, the daughter of the Inocencio family visits him in his cell one fateful night and teaches him the warmth of another person.
Before the Fall takes a very different approach to storytelling than the main series. The high stakes action, intricate world-building, thrilling political undertones, masterful use of mystery and foreshadowing aren't really anywhere to be seen here. That's not to say the prequel is bad, it just tells a much more personal and self-contained narrative that serves to flesh out the lesser explored elements of the main series such as who was the first person to ever kill a titan, how the survey corps were formed and how the three dimensional odm gear they use to kill titans was invented.
The star of the manga in my opinion was Sharle. She threw away a life of luxury and safety to save Kuklo and rebel against the cruelty of her own royal family. She constantly puts herself in danger to confront the horrors of the titans, corrupt royals and rogue criminals. She uses her well-educated background to enlist herself in the service of a group of underground blacksmiths in order to improve their methods and create the technological foundation of the military gear that would go on to give humans a fighting chance against the titans. She was the backbone of the whole narrative and her influence had the biggest impact on the events of the main series. If not for her efforts, none of the characters in the main series would've ever had the means to survive. I also just really enjoyed her personality, the way she never discriminates against the lesser class and how she breaks free from the chains of her royal upbringing.
Kuklo was a decent character, but after he meets Sharle he mostly just feels like a generic Shounen protagonist. He's not bad, just mundane and doesn't really fit in with the overall complex cast, especially next to the secondary protagonist Sharle who ended up accomplishing so much. Some of the world-building doesn't line up with the main series such as titans being able to walk at night and them disappearing the second they're killed, but most of the inconsistencies were minor things that weren't enough to completely destroy the immersion. The limited scope of the plot and setting also made the pacing feel somewhat tedious at times because most of the drama is never taken beyond the walls of the cities, but it also made room for more personal time between the characters living out their daily lives together and really learning to put their heads together to help form a better world for humanity's last survivors.
Not nearly as good as the main series and it doesn't add that much to the world or overall story, but it's an enjoyable side story that gives you a better understanding of the basics regarding daily life in the walled cities and how the foundations of military power and titan-fighting capabilities came to be. It probably won't appeal to casual readers of the series, but it might be worth checking out if you're already a diehard fan of Attack on Titan.
As a big Attack on Titan fan, I was more than a little frustrated with this series and it almost retcons/contradicts a lot of the original series world building. It's written as horrible fanfiction that keeps trying to rework its own world building to align with canon.
At it's core it sounds like a good idea, a Titan son, and at the time this was released to the public, we did not know much about Titan biology in canon so in theory you could have a Titan's son, but as the main storyline came out parallel to this, you can see where the author's collide and this one has to throw up their hands in the air in defeat. Like "Titan's can't find humans in the rain." K then why are some of the most iconic Attack On Titan titan fight scenes in the rain?
Attack On Titan is known for having killer women soldiers so I found the misogyny for Rosa and Sharle to be so out of character for the world. We have Ymir, Mikasa, Annie, Sasha and Krista who are well established bad asses in the military and somehow y'all are gonna work an inferiority plot into the prequel?
Add on top of that, none of these people or plotlines matter or have any purpose. We never meet Kuklo and Sharle's descendants in the main line and there's no reason for me to care about them. I don't even care about the main plotline to disband the Survey Corps because I know the Survey Corps still exists years later. Now if this was set in the northern district and the plotline was to find that town settlement of exiles, that I would care about because that has value. That answer isn't answered for me already.
So I'm giving this five stars at the end, though that last chapter did feel super rushed.
-small warning, this may contain spoilers, but I think I do not go too much into detail-
Regardless, this was an amazing road. I do not know how this plays on Attack of Titan because I have not read that yet (and I fully intend to), but on its own it is pretty amazing.
First of all, I loved the universe, I loved the different factions, the way their interests interacted and clashed and how it all was very intriguing. I feel like it failed to deliver in the end and it juststraight up killed characters because it was difficult to follow through on these threads, but, still I found it pretty fascinating.
Second, the characters. It of course suffers from main character syndrome and Kuklo and Sharle are painfully naïve, but, whatever. They're so sweet and so earnest and I adore them. I loved the interactions between characters, their friendships and their rivalries.
-Just... can we just agree that Sharle should either cut that mane or braid it? It was driving me nuts-
Third, the art. I don't know, I thought it was beautiful.
Last volume of the series and I'd say that overall it was 4.5 stars. Not quite perfect but I really enjoyed it. The artwork was 5 stars...amazing. The story was a bit of a slow build. It took a while for me to really get invested in the characters but once I did, it was great. The ending felt a bit rushed...wasn't bad but was just a bit of a let down due to how rushed it felt with a bunch of exposition to wrap it all up. But overall...I would recommend it and I will likely read it again some time. So glad it was all available on Comixology Unlimited.
I broke down and bought it. I will donate it to my local library because I don't need the last book in a series either in my own collection or at the school (we don't have any of the series but Lubbock does). This ended much more cleanly than I expected. Everything was tied up neatly though not necessarily as I had expected. I'm glad it doesn't go directly into the main series because it had more room to be its own thing.
This felt rushed and they had less difficulty taking titans down than the SC does in the main series. Overall, it's a satisfying (and predictable) conclusion, but the prequel series dragged on over the course of 17 volumes. I'm curious to see how these specific events play into the ongoing story as the main series winds down to the finale.
Perfect ending for the series even if the ending was a bit too predictable at time throughout the series as well as the final volume.
However, I grew to love the characters from this seties(not as much as AOT main series), but still enjoyed reading these volumes from start to finish even if it was slow burn character development and plot at time. Defenutly would recommend for any AOT fans.
This series started slow but it was so worth it 😭 The plot sometimes leaves you wishing for more or feeling like the development was either too slow or too fast, but I loved the characters and the story overall. I wish they were somehow more linked to the story we know but, to me, learning about the lives of other people in this world and knowing they were important feels right. 🕊️
3 for the overall series. Not a patch on the main series and at times it was downright awful, but overall it was ok. You wont miss anything by not reading this but if you want to devour all AOT media then you wont hate it, just be ok with it.
We reach the end, and it was pretty good! There was a lot of action and some tense battles with not knowing if everyone would make it. The very end felt a bit rushed, but kinda natural soooo yea. I can recomend the series for AOT fans for sure!
I’m not sure what to say about this story. Before the fall isn’t nearly as interesting and exciting as AOT but maybe it doesn’t need to be. Maybe it was made to be read by AOT fans who would like to get some more content.
Journeys end! The corps encounter their first live titans and the outcome will change the shape of their world and Share and Kuklo’s lives. Loved the action but felt the story ended very abruptly
