The Making of a Master

Rate this book
As a Spirit of Security, Frank gives his personal touch to maintaining peace in the Underworld city of Concord. From traffic control to providing new equipment for the playground, he works to keep the citizens of Concord safe and happy.

Frank grows concerned when signs of a failing infrastructure appear - small piles of dirt in unexpected places, damp spots on the walls - especially as his sister, Dawn, is scheduled to spend an entire week in Concord. Then the museum collapses. He and his partner, Anna, race to solve the mystery but things become more difficult when his own entrance to the Underworld fails, limiting his access to Concord.

With Dawn’s assignment imminent, Frank races against time and gravity to save her and the residents of Concord. Will he find answers in time, or will a giant collapse destroy his beloved city?

The Making of a Master is a Concord Chronicles novella.

Thanks for your interest in my books and me. I love talking books with readers and hope you’ll share your thoughts on my books by leaving a review and/or dropping me an email. It’s easiest to get a hold of me through my website (kaistrand.com). Perhaps you clicked on my bio to find out things about me, such as I hate to handle raw meat, I’m a wife and mother of four, a compulsive walker, and a Mozart fangirl. But since you stopped by, what I really want you to know is that I love that you read. Readers are smart, quick-witted, and usually good conversationalists—even if it’s only in their head. Introverts unite!

I write middle grade fiction because those are the most formative years of our lives. It’s when we are trying to claim our freedom, while still being restricted by rules. The things we learn in books can give us the skills to navigate that maze. I write young adult fiction because there are no limits to what message I share or how I share it. Plus young adult readers are some of the most passionate readers out there. I heart YA readers.

If you’d like an image of me as a writer, go ahead and picture me with my laptop in a quaint bookshop café, fingers flying over the keys while the words pour out of my fingertips. It’s much better than the real image of me in my pajamas with coffee breath, sinking into the me-sized crater in the couch, grumbling at my laptop when the words don’t come.

In The Making of a Master we follow Frank, a Spirit of Security, on his nightly duties in the underground city of Concord as he helps to keep the citizens safe. When a major collapse occurs followed by a smaller one, Frank is determined to discover why, especially since his sister is about to spend a week in Concord. I enjoyed discovering the new underground world Strand created with sky-blue ground, Natures Spirits, and unique inhabitants. The chapters are fairly short, and once into the story, the pacing is good. Although the beginning chapters explain things and set things up for the main plotline, it wasn't until chapter seven that I was hooked. Strand did not disappoint, though, and I was hooked (like I've been in all the books I've read by her) and with Frank every step of the way as he worked to solve the mystery of the collapses. Overall, it was a fun, quick read. I'm excited to continue reading about Concord and Natures Spirits in Day of Reckoning.

Just the thought of living underground makes me nervous. I like the open air, sky, clouds. But then again, the way Kai Strand describes her world in THE MAKING OF A MASTER sounds interesting and exciting and pleasant. A nice place to live after all. So, I’ve discovered there is beauty in places I had not imagined.

And the characters add to the reason I enjoyed this story. “Nature’s Spirits,” as they are known, add to this beautiful and fascinating world. Stop by for a visit and meet a cast of characters I believe you’ll remember for a long time. Kai Strand has written another winner. Enjoy the read.

This is a great story. It is filled with fantastic mythical creatures. The story is so clearly written that you can see all of the action in your mind while you are reading. And it comes with a fantastic twist for the ending.

The interior of The Making of a Master is as intriguing as the cover indicates. The reader is drawn into an unusual world, and it's underground. The story about how Frank, a Spirit of Security, faces his fears and uses his intelligence to track the causes of the infrastructure collapses is exciting with moments of levity and poignancy.

A good read that I really enjoyed all the way through. Although middle grade is not my favourite, the author has really written this wrll, to even appeal to older audiences. Great job!
