Five years ago, U.S. Air Force pararescue jumper Garrett Shepherd saved a stranger's life. Now that man, Edwin Sprague, is dead-and he's left Garrett millions of dollars as thanks. But there's a catch: Edwin has a task for Garrett to complete that will double his money-if he survives. Edwin wants revenge from beyond the grave, and he wants Garrett to get it for him.
Garrett agrees to give the bizarre challenge one week of his time, but he's quickly pulled into a dangerous world of scandal, bribery, and secrets some would kill to keep hidden. He has attracted the attention of some very powerful people-people who have destroyed their enemies before and will not hesitate to do so again. With the help of a Navajo policeman and a beautiful lawyer, Garrett's investigation leads him deep into the Navajo reservation-but uncovering the information he's hunting for proves to be a deadly quest.
No Good Deed Goes Unpunished by E. James Harrison is a suspense thriller that takes the reader across several states including Texas, California, Nevada, Utah, and Arizona with most of the action in Utah. The prologue grabbed me and I had to hold on tight as the suspense built and the action kept coming at me with only a few interludes.
Our protagonist, Garrett Shepherd, is a former US Air Force pararescue jumper. Five years ago, he saved a man’s life. That man has died and left him millions of dollars. However, Garrett has the opportunity to increase that money if he completes a task. What is this challenge and will he undertake it? If so, will he be successful?
Garrett’s character is well developed and we see different aspects of his personality during downtime and stressful times. I easily connected with him. The other characters had a variety of depths, but they were appropriate for their roles. I cared about the characters and that makes reading a novel special.
The plot is well done with lots of unknowns and some twists. One of the fascinating things about this book was the interactions of the characters as the stress built. Will you be surprised by some of the events? The ending was satisfactory, but there are threads that could lead to another book. There are some violent scenes and themes include, integrity, scandal, revenge, bribery, murder, honor, secrets, friendship, lies, family, and much more.
Overall, this book is engaging, entertaining, action-packed, and suspenseful. While this is a standalone novel, it could easily be the first book in a series featuring Garrett. This is the first book that I have read by this author, I definitely want to check out his other novels. If you like suspenseful action thrillers, then you may enjoy this one as much as I did.
I received a digital copy of this book from Covenant Communications and the author in a Goodreads Giveaway. Opinions are mine alone and are not biased in any way.
Excellent action-packed suspense-filled story that I could not put down. I would love to see Garrett and perhaps Klah solving another crime together in the future!
What I liked: * Garrett: a good man with the perfect skills to solve the problems he was faced with. Smart, savvy, serious, and savage when necessary. * The premise, plot, and story as it was told – really kept me reading! * Klah Nez: interesting and intriguing police officer – would love to learn more about his heritage * Kevin and his wife * The locale of most of the story * The unflinching look at the bad guys * The twists and turns and surprises * The feeling that at times I was right there trying to stay alive with the characters * That the instigator of Garrett’s quest, Edwin Sprague, was not all that his family thought he was * That the bad guys were, for the most part, caught or otherwise dealt with * Wondering if this was a standalone story or if perhaps the beginning of a series * All of it really except…
What I didn’t like: * The loss of innocent lives…more than one that made me sad * Knowing that some of the bad guys might get away with what they did
Did I enjoy this book? Yes Would I read more by this author? Definitely!
Thank you to NetGalley and Covenant Communications for the ARC – This is my honest review.
WOW! Just WOW!! From the first page this book had a hold on me and didn't let go, so hang onto your seat.
Have you ever done something nice for someone, not expecting anything in return, and have it backfire on you so that you wish you'd never done it? That's the situation former U.S.A.F. pararescue jumper Garrett Shepherd finds himself in. He finds an almost dead stranger in a remote part of the desert and takes him to a hospital, saving his life. Several years later when the rescued man dies, that Good Samaritan act comes back to haunt Garrett.
This suspense/mystery is one heck of a ride for the reader. Once Garrett accepts the strange offer, and sets out to fulfill the deceased man's final wish, the action and tension only let up a few times, and then just long enough for me to catch my breath, only to have it taken away again. The surprises and plot twist keep coming right up until the end. I didn't want to stop reading this book because I HAD TO KNOW what was going on, and try to figure out who was behind it and why.
The ending is complete and satisfying, but there's still room for a possible follow up book, which I'd be more than happy to read. (hint hint for the author). If you enjoy suspense books this is one for you.
I received a complimentary copy from the publisher, Covenant Communications. All thoughts and opinions expressed in my review are my own.
There were a lot of things that I loved about this book by E James Harrison. I loved the way the characters were written. They seemed real. I loved the plot. It grabbed me from the first. I really just loved this book!
This book is written from several perspectives. I loved that! Especially when I got to the end and realized that all was not as I had thought it was. That kind of threw me, in a good way!
Garrett is the main character, I’d say. He’s the one tasked with finding what Edwin had left behind. Garrett is also the one who is constantly in the line of fire. I liked him. He had a sense of honor that you don’t always see in male characters. I loved that about him!
There were parts in this book that made me yell at the characters to not do something. As well as parts that made me sad. And parts where I was confused as to why the character would do what they were doing. I think that’s a sign of a really good book. That I cared so much about the characters and what happened to them.
Thanks to E James Harrison for a great read! I can’t wait for more.
Oh.my.word. This book is so fantastically suspenseful! I feel like I still have a book hangover even though I finished it a few days ago. It jumps right into the mystery from the first chapter. The suspense only went up from there and kept me hooked until the very end. I became so invested in the characters and what was going to happen to them! There are so many surprises and plot twists and "how did I not see that coming?" and it made the story so much fun to read. The ending leaves some room for a possible sequel and I am keeping my fingers crossed that one is in the works. Trust me, if you enjoy suspense books at all, you need to read this book!
I received a complimentary copy from the publisher but was not required to leave a review and my opinions are my own.
Wow! Talk about an engaging suspense novel! There was so much about this book that kept me completely hooked and excited to find out what was going to happen next. Full of surprises and twists, I can't even think how to describe them without spoiling the story. I'll just stick with this, No Good Deed Goes Unpunished was a fantastic read. I loved the characters, the mystery, and the setting. It was super interesting and well done. Definitely a book I'd recommend to fans of suspense who like the intensity of suspense fiction, but without the gore or inappropriate language. I received an advance reader copy of this novel. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Whew! What a ride. If you’re looking for an adventure/mystery book that keeps you guessing until the very last page, “No Good Deed Goes Unpunished” is for you! Filled with plenty of action-packed gunfights, car chase scenes, you won’t want to put this book down until you know “who did it.”
Garrett did not have any ulterior motives when he saved a stranger's life. He was only trying to use his skills as retired military for the good. When he was contacted several years later and told to fly to LA because he was mentioned in the man's will, he was shocked. He was offered a reward, but then additional money to fulfill a task that was not exactly straight forward. What is he going to do?
There are SO may ways that this book could be inadvertently spoiled, so I am going to keep to the facts for my explanation and simply rate elements.
5* for suspense. This book was FULL of plot twists. Like ones that I never saw coming. At one point, I thought the author was kidding. He was not. There was very little I figured out.
5* for the characters. I really liked the good characters. I do think it was a positive representation of the Native American community. I felt like it was honoring to the service of the military. And there were a few characters I did not enjoy - pretty sure I was supposed to feel that way.
5* for the setting. Great idea to have a suspense book take place basically in no-man's land.
5* for the unique plot. Normally one does not think that hard times could come as the result of a good deed.
3* for themes. This is purely my personal preference. Redemption and revenge were both elements. Revenge was emphasized more. That left me feeling a bit empty at the end.
22/25 stars ends up with a 5* average which I do think is what this book deserves overall. Would I read more by this author? Probably. But I did feel a sense of disappointment. While I know that all wrongs will not be righted, I was wishing there was more hope. Maybe that was not possible due to the focus of this book.
Thanks to Covenant Communications and to NetGalley for letting me read a copy of the book. Clearly I have my own opinions and did not hesitate to state them.
I love mystery and suspense, especially when it keeps you wondering who really is the "bad guy." This book did a great job of that. The characters were strong and believable. The hardships they faced looking for the missing car kept me on edge and turning the pages. How they figured out what to do next was amazing and I could easily follow their jumps in logic and deduction. I couldn't read it fast enough and stayed up way too late finishing it.
I haven't read this author before, but I really liked this book. Lots of twists and turns. I'm going to have to read more by him.
No language or sex. But there was a lot of violence, blood and some very unfair deaths. I'm not complaining about that, it made the story more believable. It was just a shock at times. Recommended to 16+ who like military-style action and fighting the bad guys. I give it 5 stars.
The story begins when a man is left for dead in the desert. Five years later family and a stranger are gathered for the reading of a will. That was when the reader discovers that Garrett Shepherd saved the life of Edward Sprague. Edward's final wish is that Garrett takes on a task that will gain revenge on the man responsible.
From the opening page, this book is full of action and suspense. I did NOT want to put this one down.
Source: I received a complimentary copy. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.
This book was hard to rate. There were some things I liked about it but some that I did not like at all. While I had part of the “mystery” figured out early on, the suspense up to resolution was pretty intense. Nothing was ever as it seemed and not all the “good guys” make it out unscathed. In an attempt to be realistic, I think the author brought some sadness to the story that I could have done without. I was also disappointed in Garrett and the Deputy. They did some really dumb things at different points in the story. There background should have made them smarter than they were. If you like actions, suspense, violence, and intrigue you will probably like this story. If you like romance, and heroes, and growing attached to the characters through the story then this book is not for you.
The writing was competent, but the plot was all over the place, the pacing was bizarre, and the ending was unsatisfying and felt incomplete. I feel this would have been a much better book with a good editor helping the author shape the story. I wouldn't hate to read another book by this author, but I wouldn't be in any hurry, either. Too bad, because I had high hopes due to the author's writing style, but the book didn't live up to its promise.
"No Good Deed Goes Unpunished" takes you for a very wild ride! This novel is the kind of book that keeps you up at night because you CAN'T put it down. I stayed up several nights in a row, way past my bedtime, so I could keep reading. This novel doesn't let up on the action, and good luck finding out who's behind all of this until almost the very last chapter of the book.
Main character Garrett Shepherd is a very rough, former military man who doesn't put up with much. He has a good heart though and cares for his friends and trying to do the right thing. When he gets pulled into a bizarre challenge after saving a stranger's life five years before, he finds no way out. He's given $5 Million dollars for his good deed but is given a new challenge to add to his earnings if he completes a task for the wealthy family. This task is all about revenge and the people behind it are fighting back and want secrets to stay in the past.
This novel has many surprises that leave you in shock. This is the second book I've read by this author and I can't wait to read more. This is a 5 Star book for me! Adult Suspense readers must put this book on their to-read list.
**There is some violence that may be sensitive to some readers. **
Language: G (0 swears, 0 “f”); Mature Content: PG; Violence: PG13 Living his normal life, Garrett gets a weird phone call that changes his life -- and makes him several million dollars richer. Five years ago, Garrett saved Edwin’s life. Now, Edwin is dead and has left Garrett money in his will along with the promise for more if he can accomplish the impossible: track down the information Edwin was nearly killed over. The payout is tempting, but it comes at the risk of lives. With lives on the line, anything less than suspense and action would be a disappointment; Harrison arranges both without making the antagonist’s plot obvious, making both the protagonist and the reader puzzle out what’s going on and who’s on which side. Most loose ends are neatly tied, though a couple unanswered questions leave room for a potential sequel. Overall, I enjoyed my time reading Garrett’s story as it gave me all the excitement I was looking for when I picked it up. The violence rating is for gun use, murder, and blood and gore. Garrett Shepherd's life has suddenly changed, all because of a decision he made 5 years ago. He brought a dying man to the hospital after finding him alone and dehydrated in the desert in Southern Utah. Little did Garrett know that that man was wealthy Edwin Sprague, and now Garrett has inherited 5 million dollars, to repay for the 5 additional years Edwin received. But now Edwin (via video recording) and his widow are asking Garrett to find Edwin's lost vehicle. Once Garrett agrees to do it his life is thrown upside-down. He sets off for the desert on the same road he took 5 years ago. After a frightening couple of days, where two of his good friends are murdered, and he is in a car accident, he ends up in the hospital. He survives multiple attempts on his life, a gun-fight, hikes in the desert, and discovers who is behind all of it. This is a very engaging read with lots of adventure, intrigue, and a touch of romance all to make the perfect get-away book. It's the perfect book for anyone that loves adventure and mystery.
Perfect blend of suspense, mystery and intrigue. Harrison has done a fantastic job of blending mystery and intrigue with just the right amount of suspense to keep you totally engaged with the story. Edwin was beaten, drugged and left in the desert to die. At almost the last minute a pararescue jumper, Garrett, hiking through the desert finds him and saves his life only to vanish back into his life in the air force. Five years later Edwin dies leaving a large amount of money outright to Garrett with the possibility to greatly increase the amount if he will take on a mission to solve a mystery. But what appears to be a simple mission is actually something that could cost lives. Someone does not want that mission to succeed and a mole is feeding information to those people. What does will it take to succeed or will it ultimately fail? This book is all but impossible to put down. A great read that I thoroughly enjoyed. I was given a free copy in exchange for an honest review.
Sometimes I wonder how it is that I miss a good author until their fourth book. 🤔 This is a great #thriller that keeps you turning pages until then end, and leaves you wondering if there might possibly more coming with these characters. This fast paced novel is full of twists and turns that will leave you wanting more from E. James Harrison.
A long-shot search-and-recover mission turns deadly and nothing and no one are quite what they seem.
Garrett initially declines the project, which is a point in his favor. The reasons he changes his mind are also points in his favor. He is an able, trustworthy protagonist, the one fixed point in a shifting landscape.
I like: the desert Southwest is as much a character as the people are; strong first sentence; short chapters; moves right along. I willingly overlook: some of the relationships seem inconsistent; some characters are said to be very smart but shown to be the opposite.
Thank you to NetGalley and Covenant for the free copy I received in exchange for an honest review. #NoGoodDeedGoesUnpunished #NetGalley #Utah #arizona #navajo #pj #ex-military
The description of this book sounded interesting so I thought I’d give it a try even though the author’s name wasn’t familiar (turns out I have read another book by him though).
It took a little bit to grab me, but once it did I was intrigued. Garrett was a great main character. He seemed selfless and brave and had many skills from his career that kept things exciting.
I was kept on my toes most of the story, which I appreciate in a mystery/suspense.
There wasn’t a lot of closure. Hopefully it was setting up for a sequel.
*I received a review copy via NetGalley. All opinions expressed are my own.
This is the second book I’ve read by this author and I think he is unexpectedly polished and talented. Great characterization and believable dialogue. I enjoyed learning about the Navajo culture. The spots of humor (from one of the Navajo characters) in this book helped to lighten the suspense. It was unpredictable and kept me guessing who the “bad guy” was. I look forward to more by this author!
Garrett Shepherd, is barely making ends meet, when he receives a call from a lawyer, his life is about to change. He would have never guessed, that helping a man, in the middle of nowhere, would find him in a lawyers office, as part of that man's will five years later. There is plenty of suspense, that kept me turning pages. This novel is fast paced, and had quite a bit of action.
No Good Deed Goes Unpunished pulled me in from the start. James Harrison does such a great job with suspense! This is one I had a hard time putting down, staying up longer to read than I should have! There were a couple of scenes that slowed down for me but picked right back up. I am excited to find more from this author.
What a great book. It was action packed and had a hard time putting it down. The characters were well written. You can really feel the emotion and it was easy to feel like you were a part of the book. I definitely recommend it!
E. James Harrison’s latest novel is one you’ll want to get. The guys will particularly enjoy this because there is very little romance. Though there is a hint of a couple of them to help keep some women’s interest...mine particularly. The end is quite surprising. I highly recommend this book.
Oh my wow! How did I wait so long to read this? The twists, the turns, the suspense, the mystery, Having most of the questions answered, but having more and needing the next book.
This was a fantastic book with fantastic characters set in the southwest. I really can't say much about this one without giving things away. The characters are fantastic and I could barely put it down. It was a thrill ride that I would take again. The story has a natural tension and a mystery that will have you thinking you have whiplash.
I look forward to a follow up to get more information about this character. Garrett could easily develop a following like Jack Ryan or Jack Reacher. I can't wait for more.
I received a copy of this through NetGalley and highly recommend this.
No Good Deed Goes Unpunished had a great hook and I was drawn into the story quickly. The story was wild, crazy, and full of suspense. Harrison definitely threw some curves in that I never even saw until it hit me in the face. Garrett was a very likeable character with an incredible background as a former Air Force pararescue jumper. While there were some things that seemed unrealistic, I truly enjoyed the story and had to read the entire thing. While the majority of the questions were answered, there may be a sequel in the works because there are some things we do not know. I received a copy of this book for free; all thoughts and opinions are my own.
