Jehovah-Jireh: A Treatise on Providence

Rate this book
The providence of God is his almighty and everywhere present power, whereby as it were by hand, he upholds and governs heaven, earth, and all creatures; so that herbs and grass, rain and drought, fruitful and barren years, food and drink, health and sickness, riches and poverty, yes, and all things come, not by chance-but by his fatherly hand. God's providence is SURE and STABLE. Whoever wishes to walk securely, needs but to conform himself to its settled provisions and principles. Proverbs 10:9. Never did his Word fail. Greatly was the Psalmist comforted with this view of the stability of God's government, "Forever, O Lord, your word is settled in heaven. Your faithfulness is unto all generations-you have established the earth, and it abides. They continue this day according to your ordinances; for all are your servants." Psalm 119:89-91; compare Proverbs 19:21 and Josh. 23:14.

This is a magnificent work that encompasses pastoral, literary, and political writing in a beautiful celebration of God's providential outworking in the temporal world. It is at once admonishing, encouraging, interesting, and most of all convicting. Simply one of the best Christian books I've read.

Hands down the BEST book on Providence I have read. I have not yet read Flavel. If my opinion changes I will come. Back and update. I was especially struck by the amount of one-liners the believer can take away to meditate on to God’s glory. Finally, the American nature of this writing was surprising as before beginning I was not aware he was born in the states. He has a word to say to Americans that is just as relevant today as God’s Word is always relevant. It was a good salve to my soul and a good way to end 2023.
