I enjoyed the compilation style of this book recounting different advice from authors on: the moment they knew they'd make it as a writer, what motivates them, what tools they couldn't live without, their keys to success, what they'd do if they could go back with the knowledge they have now, and advice for struggling writers.
I picked up gems of great advice throughout and it helped put a bit of a pep in my step and confidence that it is possible to make it as a full time author, which is my ultimate goal! It was great to hear different perspectives of writers making it in different ways.
This book provides a wealth of information on different approaches to managing your books as a business and developing sources of income from books. The author has partnered with other very successful authors who explain their thoughts and processes to writing, selling books, and developing other sources of income around the text. Each author gives a slightly different take. Together they form a rich range of information that can benefit any author who wants to do more with their writing.
I bought this for information but found inspiration instead. That's not a bad thing, per se, but it's not what I signed up for. The first few author contributions were kinda ego trippy to me. The middle onwards were more informative and more inspirational.
I'd been sitting on the first draft of my second novel for six months. After getting to the middle of this book, I resolved to get it out to beta readers, and quit stalling, which I did about a week ago.
This book was so full of actionable information from actual authors who are in the market today. The content is well thought out to discuss the ups and downs of publishing. I loved how the authors each talked about their biggest struggles and what they did to overcome them.
I finished this book excited about the possibility of writing again. :)
I'll tell you what, reading all of these author's stories of their struggles, lessons they learned, and successes really strengthened my hope! These people proved to me that my dreams are obtainable and the struggle of the journey is something I need to appreciate. I recommend this book to any wanna-be full-time writer/author. Because according to these evidences, one day, you and I, won't be wanna-bes.
With a line-up of the kind this book has, there’s bound to be something of value and this book delivers in that department. Being an author myself, I recognized many of the names and some of the advice, but even so there were new names and pleasant surprises in the bunch. I’m looking forward to implementing some of the ideas I picked up in this book that is both insightful, valuable and a reasonable quick read.
This book consists of a variety of authors answering a series of questions related to their success and the lessons they learned along the way. The real eye-opener for me was finding out there is no "one size fits all" recipe for becoming a successful author, you must go through the process and learn whatworks best for you. I found the advice to be extremely useful, even when 2 different authors gave contradictory advice! The importance of getting help early on, building an e-mail list and learing how to market your book were consistent themes, but each author had at least one valuable piece of information that any aspiring author can benefit from.
Many of the featured authors offer beneficial advice to writers regardless of publishing method or venue. My favorite question posed to each participant focused on their most successful business decisions. This is also a great motivational book to pick up for a quick jolt of enthusiasm; turn to almost any chapter for a success story that will keep you on track to reach your own goals. The hard work is still all on you, but it is nice to have this encouragement at hand.
This is a must-read for how-to become a successful author and/or publisher. The book answers questions that maybe you didn’t know to ask yet in your authors’ journey. If you’re seeking personal and professional growth, this bestseller will lift you up mentally while delivering education that’ll make a difference in your future.
Each of the authors candidly answered the same questions with a variety of descriptive details of their failures and successes plus the tools they used for creating and marketing their products. It’s interesting how the members of the group turned negative events and downfalls into positive learning experiences with a successful outcome.
I made notes while reading and noticed trends for becoming successful and how it was defined individually for the author. You can bet that I’ll follow-up with the resources offered by this group of experts.
I got a lot of useful and interesting advice from this book, but the number one thing I got? Everyone's path is different. You read these advice books, from people who have had success and speak so authoritatively, and you are sucked into believing if you want to succeed, you have to do it like them, and if you fail, it's because you didn't do it exactly like they specified. There were more differences in methods than similarities in this book. Yet they were all successes. So that means you pick the things that resonate with you, that challenge you, and that spark your imagination, and then you use them to build your own path to success. And you don't give up. Success is possible if you keep in the game, not if you bow out.
For both seasoned authors and new, this book is the holy grail of how to become a commercially successful writer and self-publisher. I read this book somewhat casually the first time around, along with a healthy bit of skepticism of course. Midway through I knew this project was for real. Each featured author shares a unique angle in how to break free from the pack. Info I had been, quite frankly, missing. Many of the points raised resonated with me, and I deeply appreciate being able to add this additional knowledge to my endeavors to reach best seller status in the near future! Darrell Gartrell. Author, "21 Years of Wisdom".
Write and Grow Rich is a great book for authors. It features multiple successful authors sharing their experience in writing, marketing, and succeeding. My only concern is that the best practices are only hunted and not really laid out. Which was expected because these authors are successful by selling their secrets.
I would recommend this book to any aspiring writer. There are many things to learn about the self-publishing business and most of them are hinted in this book.
What I took from this book is, again, some hints about things that I need to research for my own upcoming book.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
The first part of the book read like the intros to those standard, get-rich-with-writing webinars. But later in the book some more potentially useful information was delivered, with more candour. One of the better revelations of the book is that writers approach their craft, and their marketing, differently. So although much of the book read like the ho-hum back patting that's rife on the web, people new to writing and publishing will find some gems in it.
Wort investing in this book if you want to prosper as a writer, author, or book marketer.
Well written - the content of book is entertaining and educative. The work is distillation of experience and knowledge of expert writers and author from different niches. Will gladly recommend the book to anyone who wants to learn the rudiments of writing, publishing, and marketing of books. Real value for the price.
This is a well-written book that proves quite useful for budding authors. It is done in a style that can serve as a reference book where you can search anywhere to get the information you require. The broad range of interviews allows you to see that regardless of who you are there is someone who will appeal to you/has similarities to you that writes successfully.
If you ever think of publishing a book, read this book first to short circuit your path to success.
I bought this book when it first came out excited to learn about writing. It's not that kind of book. It took me a while to get back into it but I'm glad I read it. Even though it is geared toward nonfiction, I found a few useful nuggets that made it worth the read.
It's also inspiring to hear many different authors' success stories, and the different paths they followed. It's nice to know there is no ONE right way.
For the most part, this book is filled with people who are very gifted in writing, marketing, and speaking. Actually, it should be fair to say that all are. However, while most offer sound advice for beginning authors and publishers, a few seemed to be enamored by their own success and were looking to tout their accolades. You will learn much from reading this book. As they say in the South, "Eat the corn; throw away the cobb."
Once you start this book, and you have your own amazing concept for a book in the back of your mind, things just fall into place. I know that everone of these authors in the interviews are behind me. They truly WANT me to succeed as a writer! Thank you for the priceless encouragement!
Solid advice from a variety of authors, including fiction, which is not exceptionally common. Slightly sales pitchy at times, but that is part of the performance of the book: this book and what people do in it (selling services) is how you make money as a writer. Some of the non-fiction advice isn't especially useful, but definitely worth the time.
I decided to buy this book and read it, though for some reason, I am cautious about books penned by multiple authors. I really enjoyed the book however, and learned a lot about today’s publishing industry. I will be putting some of these principles into practice.
This book is utterly useless. Full of self-adoration and arrogance with **very** little advice that is anything more than thinly veiled opportunities to cram some more boasting in.
I always enjoy books like this because they light a fire under me. A lot of contradictory information, but overall it motivates me to get to work on marketing. And that is the most important part.
It was a lot of verbal back patting for these authors who make money from authors, but I learned about a few tools I'd never heard of. While some tooted their own horn, some actually gave legit advice. Checking out Jason Ladd!
Good, informative book on the current state of indie pub. Not so much for the fiction author but if you write nonfiction and run a course or two this is for you.
I love this book and will refer back to it over and over again!
It is a treasure trove of information. The authors interviewed are very diverse in their outlook and approach to writing, with some consistent core messages. There is a wealth of value here for every aspiring author.
This book is full of variety. It introduced me to many experts in the field. Many of the stories resonated with me as an author. I encourage all writers, experienced and beginners, to read this book. It’s a great value!
