Alice thought her future was set in stone, until her past came knocking...
Alice Butler starred in a successful US sitcom until tensions in the cast and crew caused the show to be cancelled. Now, five years later and working towards her dream job in art history, she’s called back for a revival of the show. It can only end in disaster, surely?
Flown to a villa in Chianti to meet with the rest of the cast, Alice must decide where her future lies – with her boyfriend, David, who laps up the Hollywood company, or with the mysterious Matt, who shies away from public attention?
A beautiful romance for fans of Lucy Coleman and Trisha Ashley.
Firstly, my name isn't T A. It's Trevor. I write under the androgynous name T A Williams because 65% of books are read by women. In my first book, one of the (female) characters suggests the imbalance is due to the fact that men spend too much time getting drunk and watching football. I couldn't possibly comment. Ask my wife... I've written all sorts: thrillers, historical novels, short stories and now I'm enjoying myself hugely Cozy Mysteries. I lived and worked in Italy for a number of years, married an Italian, and fell in love with the country. I set almost all my books in Italy and I hope that my love from the country shines through my work. I‘ve lived all over Europe, but now I live in a little village in sleepy Devon, tucked away in south west England. I love the place. That’s why you’ll find leafy lanes and thatched cottages in most of my books. Oh, yes, and a black Labrador. I've been writing since I was 14 and that is well over half a century ago. I'm now approaching 1 million books sold worldwide and I find it wonderful that people as far away as India and New Zealand are reading and enjoying my work. Thank you to everybody who reads my stuff.
T.A. Williams' novels are the perfect remedy for quite a number of ailments. You're feeling down and need your spirits lifted up? Read a T.A. Williams' book. You'd love to feast in some Italian food but you're on a diet and have to settle on reading about scrumptious dishes? Read a T.A. Williams' book. You're fed up of not being able to travel because of COVID but want to escape to some gorgeous location? Read a T.A. Williams' book! Every single time I finish one of his books I'm ready to start packing my suitcases and move to Italy.
Alice left a promising career as an actress when her sitcom was cancelled and she decided to go back to college and study art history. When 5 years laters she's given the chance to reprise the role that made her famous she must decide if she wants to go back to the glamour and craziness of Hollywood or stay in England and get a job related with her studies. And what better place to think about it than a wonderful villa in Chianti, Italy!
The setting was absolutely gorgeous! I could see myself running along Alice around those hills (well, maybe not running. Let's settle on walking), visiting the enchanting Italian villages and traipsing around Florence. In his novels, Italy is always another character in the story and it's clear in every single line how much the author loves this country.
I found Alice a very sympathetic character and her struggle to be seen as herself and not her TV character very interesting. It must be hard to live with everyone assuming you're someone completely different to who you truly are. The cast of characters was a really good blend of charming ones and a couple of idiots (you know who you are!), but once more the first prize to favorite character goes to the dog, Guinness. He made me smile with each of his appearances. Put a cute dog in your story and you've won me.
The romance was cute but I found a bit weird how Alice was already thinking about uprooting her whole life in England to move to Italy just after a couple of meetings with the mysterious Matt. Talk about love (lust) at first sight! I could not understand why he was always so quiet and elusive when it came to talking about his life but after learning his "secret" I totally got it. I would not have guessed it in a million years!
Another feel good story perfect to make you forget for a few hours about the current situation.
Thanks to NetGalley and Canelo for providing an eARC in exchange for an honest review.
This was a lovely book to read especially on a cold, damp and very grey winter’s day. The descriptions of the friendly people and the hot sun warmed me and made me wish for warmer weather. The book reminded me of the tv series”Friends” meeting up to discuss another series. This was a wonderful book to cheer me up, a must at the moment. My thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for giving me the opportunity to read this book in return for an honest review.
Having the opportunity to read a book by Williams when this author has been on my radar for a while, I was really excited. However, I don’t think it completely met my expectations and I was hoping for something more for a book set in the beautiful hills of Tuscany.
The book begins with Alice and her former cast-mates meeting in Chianti to discuss the proposal of a re-vamp of a very popular sitcom – pretty similar to the ever-popular Friends that we all know and love. I was interested to see how Alice would gel with her fellow actors as five years has passed since she was in the Hollywood bubble. However, I don’t think Williams truly explored this element of the plot. As characters were preparing to discuss the new series in a lengthy meeting, suddenly the narrative jumps to them leaving and feeling rather disgruntled. I really wanted the writer to narrate some of these events because there is so much emphasis on Alice’s deliberations as to whether she wants to return to acting, or pursue her career in art history. The television show is what brings Alice to Chianti and Williams only really briefly touches on the glitz and glamour that Alice knows from her previous career; I wanted more of this to add a bit more depth to this cast meeting in Italy.
For the most part, it felt like Alice ran around Chianti like a love-sick puppy! She brings her long-term boyfriend, David, with her to Italy, intending for them to explore the local surroundings whilst she evaluates her future. At the same time, one of her old actor-friends appears to still hold a flame for her, whilst Alice is lusting over a local who is near to the villa where she is staying. There were too many hormones flying about and because of her lusting and the men apparently fighting for Alice’s attentions, I found that I could not believe in any of the relationships. The magic and charm of Italy was lost in the numerous suitors and not enough convincing emotions.
Despite these criticisms, I did really enjoy reading a book set in such beautiful scenery. Williams brings the setting alive with vivid descriptions and I could envisage myself touring Chianti with Alice. Indeed, the historical references were fascinating and it was clear that Williams has done his research. Perhaps we could see more of this from him in the future? Alice’s suggestion to the neighbour at the end of the novel sounded really interesting and I could imagine this as an amazing read. In fact, I was slightly jealous that this would not be something I could follow-up in fiction.
The mystery of the villa’s historical background starts to gather pace in the novel. This is because Alice is really keen to learn who may have lived in the villa and who is behind the mysterious crest. Fuelled by her interest in art and history, I was excited to follow Alice on her discoveries. This added another element to the plot and was again something I think Williams could have elaborated on further, certainly expanding this book to over 300 pages.
I liked this gentle read. I love reading books that are set in Italy and Williams certainly did not disappoint. However, I think I would have liked to see more depth and convincing relationships for this to be a true piece of escape-fiction. Instead, I think there are stronger travel/romances out there, but think this makes for a simple beach read to enjoy – even if you cannot travel yourself.
With thanks to Canelo, NetGalley and Rachel’s Random Resources for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
What an enchanting tale, with all the elements you have come to expect from a T. A. Williams novel, all present and correct.
Stunning Location - We are in Tuscany, in Chianti, and it features a vineyard, a huge villa, and a small town that Alice spends some extended time in.
Black Labrador - Ah Guinness, I loved him so much and all the funniest moments of the book involved Guinness and his new found love of Alice. And his own Matt is rather great too.
Romance - Lucky Alice seems to be swimming with potential love interests in this book, there is David who is her current boyfriend, and travels to Tuscany with Alice. There is Rich her ex back from her acting days and he still seems to be interested. Then there is Matt, who is the handsome stranger with the gorgeous dog!
Italian History and Art - It is becoming rather apparent to me the more of T. A. Williams' wonderful books that I read, that he has a passion for all things Italy, history and art. They seem to be common occurrences in his books, and Alice funnily enough has just completed her studies to become an art historian.
However Alice is torn between her love of Art, and also the sitcom that she used to star in, and that they are thinking of reviving which leads to her other main dilemma of the book, just what direction to take her career in.
Hard to put down - I was enjoying myself so much with this book I never wanted to be a part from it. In fact my kindle was found to be reading ahead, it was enjoying it so much, while I was asleep (Ok, that may also be a sign I need a new kindle cover and I have ordered one), But well if it had managed to transport the words into my mind while it giving me a new starting location, then I would have bene happy as I'd have been continuing sooner.
I just wanted to transport myself to Chianti and to be Alice. Yes she has big decisions to make, but her life is awesome and I would love to be living it myself!
This is a much needed trip to Italy from my armchair, and it was glorious to be immersed in such a sunny environment, in the midst of a dingy UK winter lockdown.
Thank you to Canelo and Netgalley for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.
A former sitcom actress who is now an academic is asked to return to her old Hollywood life which makes her question all kinds of things in her life. This novel takes place in Tuscany which is just beautiful and a nice mental break in the current times we're living. For the most part I enjoyed reading this story. I could forget the world around me and just live in this moment in Tuscany. The reason I'm giving this only three stars is that it lacked depth for me. Every male character is into Alice and her constantly questioning who she is interested in, even after she's decided she isn't into him!, gets old. The characters are fairly one-dimensional and I never felt like I knew, or could relate to, any of them. All in all, however, I had a great time reading it. It's a sweet escape into a simpler world and sometimes that is all you need.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for the chance to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
This is a great mix of Hollywood Insiders reuniting, glitz and turmoil, possibilities to consider, fresh starts, not one but three possible romantic liaisons, art history and a glorious visit to Italy, skilfully blended into an engrossing story, complete, of course with Guinness!! No, I don’t mean the drink, this is a book by TA Williams, after all, and Guinness is the essential black Labrador starring in this story.
We may not have our freedom to travel at the moment but we certainly can virtually through the brilliant descriptions of the sights, community and tasty food in this delightful romance, most of which is set in Chianti, Tuscany, Italy, with side trips to Hollywood. Like every other book I’ve read by this talented author, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this and have absolutely no hesitation in highly recommending it – though my husband doesn’t agree as I was so engrossed in reading it! Needless to say, I can’t praise this highly enough and suggest you grab yourself a copy to escape into as soon as possible (just warn others to leave you alone to enjoy reading it!).
Thanks to Canelo and NetGalley for my copy of this book which I have voluntarily and eagerly read and honestly reviewed.
I love any book by Lisa Renee Jones and this book is no different. This book is full of introductions, a little romance and a whole lot of mystery. Adrian is part of the Walker Security team - he's been overseas doing his thing, but he's back now and is needed as a star witness against a very dangerous man. Priscilla is the assistant DA that is prosecuting the case and she feels danger all around - is she a target? After all, several key witnesses have already been found dead and others are missing. As soon as she meets Adrian, they both instantly feel the attraction, but can they really trust each other? In typical Lisa Renee Jones fashion, this book ends in a doozy of a cliff hanger so I'm going to immediately go grab book 2 only knowing that it's still several months before book 3 comes out. I love Lisa Renee Jones' writing, but I kick myself sometimes for reading one of her books before all three are released.
This is a quick read and very enjoyable. If you haven't read her books before, do yourself a favor and start a series.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. The opinions stated above are mine without biases.
The usual high quality writing (as in language and structure) we expect from T. A. Williams, but disappointing in several ways. The brooding mysterious handsome man next door and his darling Labrador have become de rigueur in his plots, or maybe I am reading the books in the wrong order and just encountering the duo more often than I should. Our heroine tells men she is no longer interested in them romantically several times, yet is always available to tell them again. Are we supposed to infer she is the most irresistible woman they have ever met, or that they are either intellectually challenged or possible stalkers? I'm not happy with either choice. For me personally, this was not the strongest of his novels. I intend to read more, but not immediately.
What better book to read in the depths of winter when it's -7 outside that one set in a hot Tuscany summer?
Alice was one of a handful of stars on a very successful sitcom - that is, until frictions with the producer result in the show being cancelled. Happily, Alice returned to her studies and now, five years on, has just completed her doctorate in art history when, out of the blue, she is summoned to Italy along with the rest of the cast to discuss bringing the show back. Partners are welcome too, so Alice and her live-in boyfriend find themselves on a jet heading to Tuscany. Unsure about a long-term future with David, Alice sees the break as an opportunity to make some life decisions.
I always know when I begin reading a T. A. Williams novel that I'm in for a treat! He writes beautifully, and this second in his Escape to Tuscany series is every bit as good as expected. It's obvious the author is familiar with the areas he writes about; the historic details slip seamlessly into the story and at the end of the day I not only enjoy a wonderful tale but feel as if I've been on a little trip to Italy myself. Then, of course, there is always his trademark Labrador to look out for; every book has one and it's evident that he is no stranger to the breed. I have two myself and Trevor has their traits off pat. I loved everything about this one - the fabulous array of characters, romance, friendships, scenery, history, and the mystery sewn in to the skilfully crafted tale, told flawlessly, as always. A gloriously charming, feel-good read which I fully recommend and happily give all five glowing stars!
I received a digital ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. One of the many joys, of reading books by T.A. Williams, is the wonderful descriptions of the locations he chooses. This is no exception and I thoroughly enjoyed my Book Escape to Chianti. There is a strong list of supporting characters, in this story as Alice navigates her way between her former life in Hollywood and her newly earned doctorate in Art history. When offered the chance to return to Hollywood, rather than find a position with her doctorate, she finds support for both options. The cast of her former sit-com are mostly eager for her to return, as is her boyfriend David. The meeting to discuss the possibility of a return to filming takes place at a villa, in Chianti, belonging to the producer of the sit-com. The neighbour at the Villa is the smoulderingly handsome Matt, who defends his privacy and intrigues Alice. I really liked the character of Felicity Winter and found myself imagining which current Hollywood A lister she could be based on. It’s this friendship that proves to be key in Alice’s decisions about her future. In all of this, I haven’t mentioned Guinness, Matt’s adorable Labrador and the reason that Alice and Matt first become aware of each other. Guinness features heavily in this story and I recall beautiful black labs from previous books by this author. A special mention should be given to the food, from the delights of the Villa to the tiny restaurant in the village, I found my mouth watering as each meal was described. The twists that follow Alice’s story are beautifully framed with the range of Italian settings that are described perfectly. As the weather here turned icy, it was wonderful to feel the virtual sun on my skin.
The Escape to Tuscany series is continuing its great standard and how glorious it is to return to Tuscany, with its sounds and sights and beautiful countryside. Alice proves to be such an interesting character and her ability to see the Hollywood life for what it is, lets us look at it in those terms too. Caught between her old life and the academic one she has embraced, you can see her dilemma as to which she is going to stick to. `
The negative side of social media is flagged up in this story and there is a real sense that different characters are immersing themselves in Tuscany to get away from issues in their past. With all the feelfood qualities you come to expect from a TA Williams' romance and of course that wonderful black labrador whose entrance I was avidly waiting for, I found this to be such an entertaining read.
In short: romance blooms in the Tuscan countryside. Thanks to the publisher for a copy of the book
A new book by T A Williams is always a delight. The settings always have you adding to your travel bucket list. You don't need a travel guide to decide you must visit. His descriptions transport you to the scene and your senses pick up the scent and tastes of the area. Tuscany sounds delightful and is an area I'd love to experience. The cast and directors of a tv series have been invited to Tuscany to see if they will sign up for a new series. Backstage angst is foremost in Alice's mind and she is reluctant to agree. She wants to forge a career in her art history. This adds a fascinating side to the book- you see the area in her eyes. It must be lovely to be so knowledgeable and interested in the art of the areas you visit. Everything is so vividly described you do feel as though you've been on holiday with the characters.
I have to admit I read TA Williams more for the Italy part than anything else- and this one like the others made me long for the chance to travel again. Alice, our heroine, remade her life after her tv career fell apart and now she's on the cusp of a future as an art historian. Except she can't give up entirely on the tv world so she heads off to Chianti. where a revival of the show is going to be filmed, Then there's the men- her new boyfriend, her old boyfriend, and the handsome Matt (and his dog) all collide in the same place. No spoilers but while some choices might be clear from the beginning, you, like me, might disagree with some of the others. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. I enjoyed this on a gray day and it cheered me up.
My first T A Williams novel and definitely not the last. Great characters, a beautifully descriptive setting and an engaging story with a fun Labrador, Guinness, thrown in the mix. The descriptions of Italy were wonderful and made me long for travel again, and the historic element were fascinating which I really enjoyed exploring with Alice. A fun, lighthearted read.
I always look forward to a new book from T. A. Williams as I know I am guaranteed to enjoy it. Second Chances in Chianti was another wonderful escapism read by this bestselling author who knows the right ingredients to captivate his readers:
* stunning locations that are described in so much detail you feel like you are on holiday * the author enjoys bringing historical and archaeological facts to life in his stories * the characters are real and relatable * the food described in the stories leaves you wanting more * there is a gorgeous blossoming romance * and last but not least the ever faithful dog that appears in all the authors novels bringing lightness, humour and charm
Second Chances in Chianti is Book Two in the Escape to Tuscany series. Each book is a standalone story but once you have read about the sensory delights of Tuscany you are going to want to continue your holiday reading by enjoying both books in the series.
Alice’s life was all planned out with studying for an Art History degree but halfway through her studies her life is catapulted to the bright lights of Hollywood and she becomes an overnight TV star. However, after a few years of celebrity life Alice is keen to return to some form of normality and get back to her studies.
Several years on and Alice has proved to her critics that she is serious about her new career prospects and has earned her Doctorate and is looking for work in the Art Historian field.
When news from the past sparks interest in her reigniting her TV career Alice has doubts about stepping back in the limelight. Meeting cast and executives in a villa in Tuscany gives Alice opportunity to take stock of her life and think what’s best for her career and personal life.
When she bumps into the villa’s neighbour and his enthusiastic black labrador dog a friendship soon blossoms but Alice senses all is not what it seems with this reclusive stranger.
Another glorious story of second chances in life, love and hopes for the future. T. A. Williams never fails to delight his readers.
Something I’ve grown to love about the author’s books is that you know exactly what you’re going to get – lots of warmth and sunshine, a well drawn Italian setting you immediately add to your “when I can travel again” list, food and drink to make your mouth water, a touch of history, characters who win your heart, believable romance accompanied by a bit of a dilemma, and the happy ending you have absolute confidence will be there waiting for you (along with a loveable labrador, of course!). This has rather been the year to read books that provide the escape we’re all in such dire need of, and there are very few authors who do it better than this.
There’s a nice bit of glitz and glamour about this one too. After a taste of stardom and Hollywood as part of the cast on a popular US sitcom, Alice has decided to leave it behind to pursue a career as an art historian – until she’s invited to join the cast at a villa in Chianti to discuss the possibility of a follow-up series. Although she’s fairly convinced her decision to change direction is the right one, the trip offers the opportunity to meet up again with friends (although there are others she’d rather avoid) – and following through with a holiday might give her the opportunity to decide whether her relationship with David is the one she really wants.
And on the romantic front, it turns out that she’s rather spoiled for choice. Rich, her former partner both on screen and off, hopes there might be a possibility of their relationship having a second chance: and then there’s mysterious Matt, from the tower on the hillside, who gets her heart (and mine) beating a little faster.
The story isn’t a particularly complicated one, centring on Alice’s decisions – and she’s very likeable indeed, struggling to establish her own personality when constantly confused with the flirty and flighty character she played in the sitcom. And she’s able to be herself with Matt – he knows nothing about her past – although it turns out that he does have a few intriguing secrets of his own.
This is a book you read with a constant smile on your face – although there’s certainly plenty of drama, a few little skirmishes and people behaving badly. The whole cast is excellent – great characters, strong friendships, real people behind the Hollywood veneer. The setting is beautifully drawn (as the author’s settings always are), and I enjoyed running with Alice on the tracks through the vineyards, exploring the surrounding towns and villages, with the occasional outing to Florence (that has to be my favourite Italian city).
I particularly enjoyed the historical theme – nicely done, well chosen, the perfect touch – and the tentative progression of Alice’s friendship with Matt. And as for Guinness the labrador – he’s an absolute joy, often turning my smile into a full-bodied laugh, brimming over with enthusiasm and a total disregard for the need for personal space.
This book was everything I wanted and needed it to be, and I thoroughly enjoyed every moment. If you’ve read any of the author’s other books, you’ll already know that you’ll love it too – and if you haven’t, it really wouldn’t be a bad place to start.
T A Williams is back with another enchanting, emotional and engrossing Italian-set contemporary romance that is perfect for losing oneself into – particularly during these very worrying times: Second Chances in Chianti!
Alice Butler had once had her life completely mapped out. As one of the actors starring in a successful US sitcom, fame and fortune had soon beckoned, however, Alice had quickly learned that all that glitters isn’t necessarily gold. With rising tensions between cast and crew, the show had quickly got cancelled leading Alice to make the startling revelation that being in the spotlight was not in her future. Indeed she was more interested in delving into the past so she had left Hollywood and all its trappings behind and instead had chosen to becoming an art historian. With her dream job in her sights, Alice thinks that life couldn’t possibly get any more perfect – until her past as a sitcom scarlet rears its head again in the most surprising of ways when she is invited to take part in the revival of the now cancelled sitcom. Will Alice’s return back to showbiz be mired in disaster? Or will it be the lucky break she needs?
As she is flown to a beautiful village in picturesque Chianti, Alice finds herself faced with the hardest decision of her life: should she give up her dream of working in art history for the jet-set Hollywood lifestyle? Her boyfriend David certainly seems to have fallen in with the in crowd and begins to relish being in the company of celebrities. However, Alice is increasingly finding herself drawn to charismatic and mysterious Matt who seems to be David’s polar opposite; he loathes being in the limelight and shies away from being front and centre under the glare of the paparazzi’s unforgiving lenses.
Will this second chance in Chianti give Alice everything she has always wanted? Or will she end up making a decision that she will end up regretting for the rest of her life?
T A Williams’ Second Chances in Chianti is an enjoyable tale that sweeps readers off to Italy and will keep them engrossed with an intoxicating blend of humour, emotion, warmth and beautiful descriptions of Chianti that will make them feel as if they are this beautiful part of the world with Alice and Matt.
The next best thing to a holiday in the Med, T A Williams has penned another must-read contemporary romance with Second Chances in Chianti.
Second Chances in Chianti is a fun story for us armchair travelers. It is a mix of Hollywood, with the stars of a show reuniting for a possible reboot of the series, along with a trip to Tuscany. There is the glamour of living in a huge, beautiful villa with servants, a pool and all the turmoil of people living in the same home with pasts coming to the forefront, and a possible romance in a beautiful, historic, cultural city. Alice Butler had been the star of a US sitcom, but when it ended, she gave up Hollywood and returned to school getting her doctorate in Art History. She is ready to start her new life with her boyfriend David when she gets the call. She and David head to a villa in Chianti to meet with the cast and determine if she and the rest of the cast are interesting in participating in the revival.
This is an enjoyable romance dealing with new beginnings, possibilities and choices, following your dreams as well as romance. There was a mix of characters in this one, both ones I enjoyed and ones that really grated on me, so great job Trevor developing those characters to become real to me. The setting was amazing and I loved learning about the history of the area and the art that was part of the story. Of course, Guinness is the essential black Labrador starring in this story and he was a hoot. He was involved in bringing Alice and her new romantic interest, Matt together. There is mystery involving Matt that was fun to read about and the reveal of that secret was wonderful. I liked Matt and Alice together and wanted their romance to develop. My one niggle is that when they spoke in Italian, it was written in English with the book saying spoken in Italian. I would have preferred it was written in Italian or at least the common phrases to give it more authenticity. The audiobook was enjoyable with the story being more of a dramatic reading rather than a full performance. Overall, this was a fun story with a happily ever after ending that I recommend.
About the Book: 5 years ago Alice Butler was a TV star in a comedy Pals Across the Pond. Now she has a PhD in Art History and ready to begin her career off screen.
As she is interviewing for what could be the perfect job, Alice gets a call that could change her trajectory back to the TV screen.
She goes to a villa in Tuscany, Italy to reunite with her old Pals cast to discuss a series reboot.
While she is there she decides to bring her boyfriend, David and extend her trip a few weeks for them to holiday in the area after the meetings and see if this relationship is a keeper.
While jogging one morning, Alice meets a very sweet Labrador named Guinness with a very handsome owner named Matt who lives in a tower next door to the villa.
Alice has a lot of decisions to make and the beautiful scenery of the Chianti region of Italy will hopefully give her lots of inspiration.
Why I liked this book: The story itself with an actress trying to change her image from the character of “Polly the flirt” to her real life as Dr. Alice Burton was appealing to me.
The wonderful description of the Chianti area was my favorite part. The description of the food, wine, shopping, landscape and people made me want to jump on a plane there and enjoy a holiday.
There was a bit of a history mystery as the coat of arms at the villa is also in Matt’s tower and in a fresco painting at a church in town and PhD Alice does some research to figure out the origins.
The romance part is well integrated into the story.
This was a quick and enjoyable read for me and if you like wonderful location descriptions, a little lifestyles of the rich and famous with a dash of romance, grab this read! Thanks @rachelsrandomresources for a chance to read this one!
T.A. Williams is amazing. All the books I have read so far written by this author have given my heart the much needed crave for traveling and the amazing descriptions help me dream of wonderful places. In this book we go to Chianti. Vineyard... Villa... Small town fell... Can I go there right now? Well, at least going on a literary trip to Chianti is safer.
I'm usually very picky on my romance when I see that the MC has more than one potential love interest, but with T.A.'s books I just don't care, and I jump to the opportunity of reading it. In this story, the plus side was Alice. I quite like her, and she was made the journey so interesting. I was kind of interested to see where she would go, what she would pick... and yes... WHO she would pick was also something I was curious to know.
The book really touched my heart for various reason. Not just because of the setting and the descriptions... Not just because of the Art and the History, which I very much appreciated... It was also because of the dilemma Alice had in her hands. The story felt real because I could see Alice and her problems, doubts and situations, and I could understand them.
Overall, I loved it. It was an easy read but one that also made me think at some moments. It has a light feeling thanks to the romance and the interactions between characters. It was also a book that take us to another place, which we very much need now considering the circumstances.
[I want to thank Rachel, at Rachel’s Random Resources, and T.A. Williams and Canelo for the eCopy of this book, via NetGalley, and for allowing me to join in the fun and being a part of the blog tour with my honest review of the book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.]
Alice Butler starred in a successful US sitcom as flirty Polly, a role that followed her even when the show was cancelled. Seeing it as a chance for a second career, Alice returned to Bristol to study for her dream job as an Art Historian, but five years later she gets a call saying that the sitcom might be revived. With all the bickering and backstabbing that went on before, surely it could only end in disaster? The meeting and reunion of the cast takes place in a villa in the Chianti region of Tuscany and Alice has two decisions to make…does she continue with her relationship with boyfriend David, and does she sign up for the sitcom again? Throw into the mix, Mysterious Matt who lives in a Tower next to the villa which just adds to Alice’s list of decisions!
TA Williams writes captivating, believable stories and by the end of them I always want to add the locations of his books to my list of places to visit and after this book that list is getting longer and longer!! It was fantastic to step aside from reality for the duration of this story, I actually visited restaurants, and Art galleries during lockdown! The description of food and the scenery is beautiful and I enjoyed dining out at Giovanni’s on several times, plus I never had to pick up the bill!! Thank heavens for Guinness, the black Lab who features quite heavily in this story - it wouldn’t be a TA Williams book without a Labrador.
Another radiant read from one of my favourite authors.
I absolutely adored everything about this book and just allowed myself to be swept along in the sweet romance, glamour and beauty of it all. T.A. Williams writes about Italy with such vivid and intricate detail that I feel like I am there, and days later I still hold such fond memories of Chianti, like the afterglow of a holiday. The historical aspect of the plot was fascinating, and I could easily imagine all the old, stone buildings in the town, the wonderful aromas from the bakery and restaurant and the cute little house where Alice stays for a while. Alice was a delightful character. Despite being part of Hollywood in her past, she is intelligent, grounded and an all-round genuine person. I loved her dignified responses to things but also how she was not a push over. Matt is an enigma for most of the novel but there is something warm and inviting about him and it was the air of mystery that kept me so intrigued up until the end. Alice’s past companions were all very entertaining and had an array of personalities and I loved the new people she met whilst staying in Chianti too. There is a huge romance aspect to the plot (of course) but there is also an element about the journey of Alice and her dilemma, and I loved being part of her personal journey as much as I enjoyed the romantic aspect. Second Chances in Chianti really is as inviting as it sounds so I encourage you to grab a copy and take a trip without leaving the sofa. Highly recommended.
As a huge fan of this author's previous books, I was excited to be asked to be part of the publication push and couldn't wait to dive into the pages and transport myself to Tuscany!
This is the beauty of a T. A. Williams novel; each one is so beautifully depicted that the reader is drawn into the sights, sounds and smells of la Bella Italia! 'Second Chances in Chianti' is set in the heart of the Tuscany region and you will undoubtedly want to visit for yourself to sample the food, wine and glorious vistas described in the book by the time you reach the end!
No T. A. Williams novel is complete without a furry friend to steal the show and win the heart of the main character and in this one, Guinness, the adorable Labrador, is a delightful feature throughout who certainly helps to break the ice between Alice and Matt.
I loved the portrayal of the different characters; from those gripped by the ideals of a Hollywood lifestyle and fame and fortune, to those more down-to-earth who would prefer to shy away from the limelight. Alice finds herself torn between the two and it's interesting to see how her mindset evolves and changes as the story progresses.
This is another light-hearted romance from a hugely popular author. If you've yet to pick up one of his novels, what are you waiting for? Get reading this one!
Alice enjoyed her life as a TV star in a hit romantic comedy serial until there was more drama in real life than on the screen. When the series got cancelled, she returned to her university life and found academia suited her. The chance to rekindle the past is too good to ignore, so she accepts the invitation to Chianti, not sure what her decision will be.
Set in charismatic Chianti, this story allows you to escape to a place full of history. As always, this author writes using vivid imagery that brings the locations to vibrant life. This is a story where celebrity meets the past. The romance is full of conflicts but always gentle and real. It is a stark contrast to the superficial glitz and glamour of the celebrity world.
Believable characters, a location full of heat and history and a dog character who steals your heart, the perfect book to lift your mood.
I received a copy of this book from Canelo via NetGalley in return for an honest review.
A charming, escapist read. Given the dreary weather this gorgeous, scenic story set in Tuscany, Chianti whisked me away and let me forget “the real world” for a few hours. This is a brilliant story – stunning setting, an eclectic mix of characters and a funny, but cute, dog. What more do you need? Oh yes, a fantastic romance and gorgeous male lead! Alice is quite the woman; having had a successful acting career she is know a Doctor in art history and wanting to pursue this as a career. An opportunity presents itself and she realises she may not have turned her back on fame after all. I liked Alice a lot, she stuck to her principles and didn’t really suffer any fools. She was an independent, smart woman. She had plenty of male admirers to choose from, but she clearly had a spark with Matthew. It was great to read how they slowly got to know each other, the timings may not have been right but Guinness the dog clearly knew what he was doing, the little matchmaker. T.A Williams has such a lovely way of writing, I felt I was there with Alice. I didn’t want to put it down at all and I read in one glorious sitting. Highly recommended for a romantic, scenic escape!
I am loving the Escape to Tuscany series, I love the exploration of prominent locations in Italy teamed with some history and wonderful food.
Whenever I pick up a book by the lovely TA Williams I just know I'm headed to a sunny location for pure escapism and this book was the perfect remedy for a cold February.
Packed with wonderful characters and the adorable Guiness, you get a wonderful insight into different relationships both personally and for the on screen characters. Alice was a lovely down to earth character and I loved spending time with her exploring and sharing her love of history.
A lovely light hearted read that I reached the end of far too quickly.
T.A. Williams has gifted us with what we all want right now - escapism. And where better to transport us than to Tuscany, where he adds in an extra bit of glam in the form of Hollywood actors and directors, on top of the beautiful scenery, a stunning villa, gorgeous food, an art-related mystery and the inevitable romance. And, of course, there's a dog in it - so just about everything I could want from a story.
Did I wish I'd been in Alice's shoes during that sunny July? You betcha: That said, I was more than happy to tag along with her as she explored Tuscany and found out what she really wanted from her life, too. This was not an angst-filled novel, but more a gentle realisation that some things happen for a reason.
Beautifully written, with enticing descriptions of the Tuscan scenery, plenty of humour, a fascinating mystery, believable characters and Guinness, the Labrador, this proved to be a relaxing read that I didn't want to put down. Definitely not the last book I'll read by this author.
I would just like to say a very big thank you to Rachel’s Random Resources for very kindly forwarding me a copy of this book for my Kindle, in return for an honest review. This is the first book that I have read from this author and I can definitely confirm that it will not be my last. This was the perfect book to read during the current conditions and definitely made me wish for warmer sunnier weather!! The book is set in Tuscany and was a beautiful location in a small town, in a huge villa and features a lovely vineyard. T A Williams has written a very realistic, believable story and now I have the urge to go on holiday! I really enjoyed this book and it kept me captivated throughout.
This was my first book by T.A. Williams and it was lovely. The development of the main character, Alice makes you feel like you are on this journey with her. In Second Chances in Chianti, Alice travels to Tuscany to decide if she wants to join her previous cast mates on a new show. Since she’s going and has so much up in the air right now she decides to stay in Tuscany for a few more weeks. It’s during this time where she starts to get her career back on track and figures out what she truly wants in a partner. While to me this book was slow to develop, I understand and appreciate the character development, the storyline and how it was written.
