Risdaverse #3

When She Purrs

Rate this book
Life on a farm planet at the edge of the universe can be dangerous for a human woman alone.

That’s why I need a husband. ANY husband.

Unfortunately, all the men I approach keep running off. So I hire a bounty hunter to kidnap me someone capable and strong, someone who will scare off the creeps that are trying to move in on my territory.

It’ll be a marriage of convenience only.

I should have been a little more specific about who I wanted, though…because the intimidating and fierce praxiian male that the bounty hunter brings to me? The one with feline features, big arms and an even bigger…uh, farm?

He’s the problem I was hoping a new husband would scare off. What am I supposed to do now?

(Don’t ask him, because all of his suggestions are completely and utterly filthy and have nothing to do with a marriage of convenience.)

Ruby Dixon is an author of Science Fiction Romance. She likes fated mates, baby-filled epilogues, and cinnamon roll heroes. She also likes to write biographies of herself in the third person, because it feels more important that way.

Ruby also loves coffee and dirty books and will probably be a cat lady at some point. :)

As always, Ruby Dixon didn’t disappoint. This was a sweet story set within the same universe as the novella “When she’s married” which I loved.

I’m glad Ruby decided to expand that world because it does make for an interesting concept.

This book was exactly what I needed considering I’m not really in a heavy reading mood. It’s light- ish (there’s mention of past abuse for both characters but nothing on page). The romantic angle is done really well, the characters are very likeable and it’s steamy. A winner in my book.

Narration: 🎙🎙🎙🎙
Romance: 💛🖤💜💚💙
Heat/Steam: 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Story/Plot: 📕📗📘📙
World building: 🌎🌍🌏🌎
Character development: 🦁👱🏻‍♀️🦁👩🏼

The heroine(s): Kim - a human who was kidnapped from Earth and sold as a slave. She has since gained her freedom and moved to Risa Three where she was granted a parcel of land. Though she has been harassed so needs a husband to help protect her land.

The Hero: Nassakth - He is a Praxiian male. Praxiian’s are huge, broad shouldered cat-like males with a long tail. He farms the plot next door to Kim and has been interested in her for a while. So when he finds out that she hired a bounty hunter to kidnap her a husband, he pays the bounty hunter to kidnap him for Kim.

The Story: Kim is distressed to see that the man the bounty hunter got for her in none other than the neighbor that she is afraid of. He has been courting her in the way of his people, but she thinks it is harassment. Especially considered he marked her door with Jiz to announce to others that she is his.

Kim doesn’t know what to do with Nassakth when she gets him. She immediately recognizes him as her neighbor and keeps him tied to a chair. Her crop just happens to be a drug that works only for the Praxiian males and is an aphrodisiac. It is the only crop that can be grown on her dry arid parcel of land.

The narration was done by Jillian Macie and Mason Lloyd. It was dual POV and I enjoy both of their voices. Mason Lloyed has a bit of a stilted tempo but since Nassakth is an alien the cadence seems to work fine, so I enjoyed the narration quite well overall.

The story was good and this one was much more than just a smut fest like When She Dances which is the last one I listened to in this series. I thought it was so cute that Nassakth brushes his tail for Kim and that she notices and likes it.

4.5 stars - Flew through this... it had all my catnip (heh) for what I enjoy in both a speculative romance with space/alien races and what I love about the kind of books Ruby Dixon writes. Trope wise, this was my jam: marriage of convenience for one person/marriage of love for the other, intercultural romance, low angst/high external conflict, and a protective version of the alpha hero type. I think she handles traumatic backstories for her characters with a good dose of sensitivity (CW: enslavement, sexual assault, and physical abuse) and makes those elements feel lived in as a part of who they are without fetishizing it or dwelling on it too much. I really just love this Risda series from Ruby Dixon- probably my favorite one so far & can't wait for Sophie's story!

This author is really good at writing sci-fi romance.
The author rather often writes rather multi-layered characters and the characters are also sometimes interesting and not “perfect” (and I mean mostly in their personality/temperament…. But also sometimes in their appearances/looks)
And this is also more or less true for the characters in this book as well…. With some exceptions.

The flow of the story is really good and you get immersed in the story rather quickly.
The world-building in this series/book is also good …. but it is not really on the same level as the authors other series... Ice Planet Barbarians and Ice Home series/books, which have rather many good books.

The hero (Nassakth) in this book is patient/considerate and sweet and understanding, he is a gentle giant that is a little bit misunderstood by the heroine.

The heroine (Kim) is at times somewhat selfish and ignorant/insensitive but she also has good moments where she thinks about self-reflection and what she said/did wrong and tries to rectify the situation/mistake.

The heroine talks rather negatively about her age (the heroine is 36…. but she kind of talks about herself like she is at least double that age.) So more or less hints of subtle internalized ageism.👎➖

Both the characters have a sad and traumatic past because they were slaves, and they try and work through that past and those issues together.

The chemistry between these two characters is written and done in a really good way and is also steamy and a little bit of a slow burn.

The characters in this book are a little “older” Kim is 36 and Nassakth is 45.👍➕

Even if it is a sci-fi romance …. it is always very much appreciated when the author is or tries to be inclusive. (And it would be really great if the author wrote more heroines and heroes that were “older”…. I think out of all the books/series this author has written only 4 or maybe 5 heroines? Are older: one heroine in her 50’s and 3 or 4 heroines that are in their early to mid 30’s…. all other heroines are in their early to mid 20’s and few in their late 20’s…. it would be very nice with some more age variety among the heroines.)

This author is really obsessed about all or almost all of her heroines having offspring (“baby obsessed”)…. which gets repetitive rather quickly…. Would be nice if some of the heroines did not want children or just wanted to wait or something…. Just to mix it up a little.

This book is still a very enjoyable read from this author and I recommend it to everyone who likes sci-fi romance.

I've had a strange couple of days after a complicated and annoying book - so I needed something steamy and romantic. And boy did I get it here!

Was it bizarre and fetishized? Of course, it was, Dixon writes about aliens with big and unusual... organs and stuff.
But was it also totally sweet, romantic and steamy? Hell, yes!!

I enjoyed every minute, and the epilogues were just two sweet cherries on top. If you need an escape and don't mind aliens - don't look further!

Dnf, I've come to love many of ruby's books, this not being one of them. I made it to 54% and that's was my breaking point. I can not stand our heroine, she's is ignorant and only thinks of herself or what she has gone through or what she thinks is right and wrong. Her man goes way beyond with loving and caring for her, is down right sickening because she's doesn't deserve a lick of it. When it's explained that he has killed his own slaver and a man who wanted to slave her, right away she thinks well I can't reconcile with this, yes he was a gladiator and that kinda killing is ok because they know what their getting into ( a match to the death) but how dare he kill his cruel slaver his parents sold him to. How dare he kill the man who wanted to take her and sell her for sex!!! Come on!! I was so done after that. I think she should have died alone on that planet and that her mate could have done a trillion times better for himself.

When She Purrs was another enjoyable read from this author. Nassakth was sold into slavery by his parents which was considered an honor. He spent his life fighting but as he aged he knew escape was the only way to live out the rest of his days in peace. Kim is a human used and abused until she is freed. Nassakth was so sweet and patient with Kim and their relationship developed in a really sweet way. I loved the ending and the two Epilogues. Now what didn't work for me was that the story was too long with not much happening. It took me forever to read because I did put it down twice to read something else.

That took me way too long to read but life has been stressful lately so we’ll blame that 😅 the length for books/novellas in this series is all over the place tho, definitely wasn’t expecting a full length book all of the sudden but it was pretty cute. We got a new alien species as a hero and he’s a cat. As a cat lover I’m conflicted because he’s pretty cat like so some of that was a bit weird to imagine 🥴 overall though I liked that the heroine was a bit older than your typical h, that the hero was an ex-gladiator and the epilogues were very cute.

I want to thank Ruby from the bottom of my heart for this book. All 77 days of quarantine she has posted a chapter on her FB page. I looked forward to it every morning. Today was the epilogue. I’m sad it’s over. This was a spin-off of her blue alien series spinoffs. I loved every second of it.

A book from a series with more than 20 books

So technically this spinoff series is no where near 20 books long BUT the 3 series set in this universe is about 30 books altogether soooooo I'm fucking counting it.

Bethiah was THEE best thing about this book and I for some bisexual vibes from her 🥰. I NEED one of the future books to be about her. She was hilarious! We had a little cameo from some blue pirates 😉 so that was a nice and makes me want to read that series over. I also really liked Nasskth and Kim and the epilogue was so darn cute. I love how after so many books Ruby can still find ways to keep it fresh.

I'm in the minority here, but I just wasn't loving it, and I found myself getting bored. I think I would have enjoyed it a lot more if it had been 100 pages shorter. The epilogues were too long, in my opinion, but it might be a big plus for others.

Also, I kept imagining the hero as a large, gray version of Puss in Boots from Shrek and that was not a turn on for me. 🤷‍♀️

"It's fiction. It's not about you."
"Do I inspire you?" I ask hopefully, and when she turns pink, I am pleased.
"Do you need more inspiration?"
"Not right now, no." She glares at me ferociously. "You—"

"I'm purring and we're going to fuck and I don't care if the entire ship hears it. Do you understand me? We're going to fuck, and you're going to fill me with your cum and give me a baby, and then we're going to raise a dozen of them together on our farm."
the way our girl went from being too shy to openly say what she wanted to this>>>>

“Kim, have I not shown you how much I care? Do I not demonstrate it every day? Of course I love you. How can I not? You are the most perfect female I have ever seen." He leans forward and presses a kiss to my knee, then my thigh. "You are kind, and gentle." Another kiss, and he's heading toward my pussy again, I just know he is. "You are brave and honest." Another kiss, this time on my inner thigh. "You are beautiful, and smart, and resilient. You stand up for what you believe in. Seriously Kindle. You are my best friend.

JK, but thanks for putting this bad boy in my recommended cause
I SERIOUSLY HAD NO CLUE THIS WAS EVEN A THING??

Apparently for the past quarantine, RD has been posting a chapter of this story a day.
Which I am frankly, UPSET, that I missed out on this experience....

But then...at the same time, knowing myself and my patience level...

Ain't no way i could have done 1 chapter a day...

Especially since I friggin' Crushed This Bad Boy In One Go.

This story was so cute and sweet and an absolute delight to get the chance to escape into. I love getting to learn more about the human women who were freed from their slavery and given a plot of land, some machines, and a prayer on this backwoods farm planet. I felt bad for Kim (as well as all of the other women we've met) and not just the suffering at the hands of their prior captors, but also sad for the Earthen lives they had to leave behind. Kim has her farm, growing flowers (And YESSS buddy those buds have got some serious mojo to em for a certain someone) and hires a bounty hunter to go out and catch her a husband of convenience.
Which, if thats how that works, apparently I've been going about things the wrong way....
Anyway, enter the room Nassakth! Our Praxian hero who is trying to woo is sweet Kim...in ways that make her believe she needs protection from.

Cause, yes, "Marking" her door was probably not the best idea.

Moving forward, Kim and Nassakth are not an insta-love (which I Am So Here For!) and have to struggle both with their feelings, building trust, and trying to make a future with eachother. It's sweet y'all and burns over time until culminating into what I like to fondly call,

"Need to Get Me A Daym Praxian."
Cause hoooooo nelly. That is some steamy-steam buddy.

Overall, this is one sweet retreat. There is not any really intense moments, hard-pressed action, or any dread-consuming drama happening here. It's a story about two individuals healing in themselves, but also together, and I found it an absolute delight to read.

The Mesakkah better watch out, because the Praxians have certainly...Intrigued me.

I hope we get to learn/see more of them in the future. Finger crossed.

Ugh it hurts me to rate a Ruby Dixon book so low but I didn’t care for this one at all. Was way too long of a story and boy did I feel every page turn. Most of my problems centered on the heroine Kim who was just plain annoying. At the start of the book she is appropriately described as too stupid to live, inviting any single alien man to her home for a cup of tea and a chance to see if they should be mates. I get it, humans are naive creatures but this chick was a slave for like 5 years and treated horribly. You’d think she would be a bit smarter in exposing herself to strangers. Then there is just so much unnecessary angst and drama introduced to fill out the 380+ pages of this book. I mean we get to about 85% of the way through and Kim is convinced that the hero Nassakth is going to leave her without a second thought. Seriously!?! Your mate who has bent over backwards to make you comfortable and is just a big old cuddly Hero is going to drop you?

So why even give it two stars? It was Nassakth who I really did like as the Hero that slightly won me over. Seriously hope this is not a new trend in Ruby’s books.

Of course Ruby delivers again. This was the best one of the series in my opinion. I definitely liked the longer length. I just loved Nassakth. He was so fierce and patient. I was so excited to read about a praxiian and get a change of pace. Nassakth and Kim helped each other to heal and move beyond their past as slaves. I love SFR and Ruby is one of the best authors in this genre, great job!

Tristemente, sin ronroneos de mí parte para este libro

When she purrs de Ruby Dixon serie Mail-Order brides/Risdaverse libro 5

Reread: May 2022, 4 Stars

Ok, so still really liked this on the reread, but not as much as the first time. A bit because of the audio (didn't lovvvve the female narrator that narrates the Risdaverse books) and partly because I know I love some others from this series a bit more.

Hella steamy, hella dirty talk, and the couple has a nickname for the hero's peen: The Warrior.

This was the first beefy Risda book and her first Covid Serial book posted online, so that was were the 5 star love came from as well. I hate bumping down ratings on rereads, but it was just by a smidgen. Maybe on the next reread it will go back up who knows, that's the risk of rereads.

SO GOOD.

So many amazing things here, but this one killed it. We have a Praxiion hero, and our heroine hires a bounty hunter to steal her a husband. SO STEAMY, top level my friends. Perfect set ups for future books and a more complex story compared to the other novellas. This one was originally written as a serial story on FB, but she pulled out all the good stuff for this story. One of my favorites of hers from any series yet!

Ehhhh. I much prefer Ruby Dixon's shorter books, I get as much or even more enjoyment out of them than her longer ones like this one. They sometimes feel a bit too dragged out or I get bored once the couple gets together. This was alright (though I loved that he was rich lol).

When She Purrs is part of the Risdaverse sci-fi alien romance series by Ruby Dixon that takes place on a farming planet. This is a marriage of convenience between a human and former gladiator alien hero!

Kim is 36 and thinks she’s “too old” for any guys to be interested in her. Her farm on Risda III doesn’t have great land that could entice possible mates to be interested either, so she ends up hiring a bounty hunter to help her find a husband! She wants a husband in name-only and to keep her safe from a neighbor who has been low-key harassing her. But imagine her surprise when the bounty hunter sends over her new husband-to-be and it’s the neighbor she’s been trying to avoid!

Nassakth is a 45-year old former gladiator who has been watching Kim from afar to keep her safe and is interested in her. He’s been leaving critters he killed for her on her doorstep and scaring away other males, thinking he’s showing her he’s interested. After he sees the bounty hunter talking to Kim he asks what she was hired for and when he finds out, he tells the bounty hunter she can “kidnap” him to be Kim’s husband. This was a cute setup of miscommunication, she thought he’d been harassing her but he’d been trying to court and woo her to win her!

Kim was a former preschool teacher in her past but now she’s writing romance stories on a space forum, releasing it chapter-by-chapter for other ladies to enjoy, read, and comment on! Her farmland is only good for growing an aphrodisiac flower to specific aliens which creates quite the funny first encounter between Nassakth and Kim! This was a fun one, my only issue was it was too long. Most in this series are shorter and novella length and this felt like it would have worked better at that length too.

I love Ruby Dixon and I don't always read the blurb before reading her books. So, imagine my surprise when this book's hero wasn't a blue-guy, but a cat-guy. And, while the characters were actually pretty adorable, I wasn't personally into the hero being a cat-guy. The rest of the story was cute though, plus a few interesting characters were introduced.
