Scarlett Wells is enjoying the last summer in her small town off the coast of North Carolina before heading off to college. Beach days, endless nights, and making memories with her best friends are all she has in mind. Until she crosses paths with an intriguing man who instantly captures her attention. He’s mysterious, a little dangerous, and hell-bent on protecting her at all cost.
Pierce is an immortal who’s been torn between worlds for centuries. Too damaged for Heaven, too good for Hell. He’s damned to roam earth collecting the souls of the dead, while harboring the curse of the Angel of Death.
Everything changes on an unforgettable night in a crowded bar when Pierce is drawn to gather a soul far before it’s time, Scarlett’s. She’s being hunted by something unearthly, and his only mission is to shield her immense light from the horrific evil that’s targeting her.
In their fight between good and evil will they prevail, or perish?
I read this book from start to finish in one go! It has the perfect mixture of supernatural, love, and drama. If you are looking for a book where you can feel the connection between the characters then this is the book for you! Another amazing book by H. L. Swan!
37 chapters. 309 pages. An Angel of Death and a human. Love. Friendship. Complex characters and situations. I have finally finished Guarded by Death and I am in absolute awe. I have never been captured this fast by a book that is a stand alone. This book comes to show that love truly does prevail! Getting to watch the workings of the brilliant mind of miss H.L. Swan is astounding to say the least. This book has left me breathless and wanting more. Guarded by Death has surpassed so many books that I have grown to love. I cannot honestly articulate how great this book is. The understanding that these characters have for each other and the love that they share is immaculate. It was well written and the mind that came up with this story should be congratulated!
Such an amazing read Pierce is an immortal who has been torn between worlds for centuries. He harbors the curse of the angel of death.
One night everything changes for him when he must gather a soul. Scarlett is being haunted by something evil and he decides to save her light from the darkness. Scarlett is drawn to his mysterious Pierce and they fall for one another. The bond is so strong with feelings neither understand. But Pierce is determined to protect her.
@h.l.swan is one of my favorite authors and I loved the Emden series, so I had no doubt Gaurded by Death would be equally as amazing!
Scarlett just graduated high school & meets Pierce, the Angel of Death, who is sent to gather her soul, but finds himself compelled to protect her instead. The bond HL creates between Scarlett & Pierce is captivating. I just loved the intensity of both the story and the characters' relationships. She does a great job designing a believable parnormal world & all it would entail. 10/10 recommend this read!
Not sure if any of this is a spoiler, but I still decided to add the spoiler warning.
Didn't think I'd like this genre but I ended up loving this book! I was flying through the pages and there didn't seem to be a boring part in this. Also the plot wasn't predictable for me, which I always appreciate and it caught me off guard multiple times.
I honestly fell in love with Pierce and Scar, they are too sweet! This book had its adrenaline filled moments that made me be at the edge of my seat but also moments that made me go "aaww" and I kept waiting my Pierce to show up as I was reading (never happened tho). So thank you, now I have another imaginary boyfriend, Pierce, in my head, along Hardin, Aiden and few others XD
The only reason I'm only giving 4 starts instead of 5 is that I wasn't huge fan of one of the plot twists, that just wasn't for me. I didn't expect it which I appreciate but I also wasn't a huge fan of that when it happened.
But overall a very well written book that sucked me into its world really fast and really deeply. Literally couldn't put the book down until I was on the last page.

I loved the Emden series by H.L. Swan, so I was more than excited to see what she could do when she dips her pen in some paranormal romance!
I absolutely loved this book! Pierce is so swoon worthy and his fierce efforts to protect Scarlett from evil is swoon worthy. It's complex, it's beautiful, and it shows how love always wins.
I'm not usually into paranormal stories, but this one is a 10/10 ! I'm so happy I read it!
I absolutely loved this book I didn't want to put it down but real life happens so I had to take time to read it the characters are great and as a twilight fan I did see a few similarities but I didn't mind this. I would and already have told my friends to read it
Love... Love...LOVE this book!!! The beautiful story of a human and the Angel of Death. Amazing story line! Love the twist(s)!!! Definitely unexpected! Incredible ending! I cried (again!!!) ❤

I LOVED this story! While I thought their relationship moved really quickly I do remember being 18 and falling head over heels fast for guys so it made sense (especially if they were as hot as I imagine Pierce is lol)! The end definitely had a twist I wasn't expecting and made me enjoy the book all that much more! I know it's a standalone book but if she wrote a sequel I would snatch that book up quicker than you can imagine!
Everything H.L Swan writes is 🔥🔥 Not my usual genre but wow, I think I may have a new favourite.... Doesn’t everybody want someone like Pierce in their life? The perfect balance of love and hate in this book, especially with the major plot twist, all I say is I didn’t see that coming!!! Amazing!
Wow, what an interesting storyline concept. I wondered the entire time how the Angel of Death would find happiness. Have to say the twist regarding villains was a surprise as well. Well done. This young writer is definitely one to follow.
The best book I have ever read! Definitely went to the top of my book shelf i have been obsessed with twilight and After for years and this book surpassed those! I was and still am shocked at how much I loved it! So amazing! Definitely my favorite book EVER!
3.5 stars. Cool concept and I knew it would be a guilty pleasure from reading the blurb but still wanted something a little more fleshed out and mature. It feels quite immature a little throughout and often jumps into being cheesy, but I know this will be loved by a lot of people. I especially would have loved this in high school when my Twilight faze was strongest and I wanted books similar, which this falls into such a category.
The other thing that annoyed me was it felt like the climactic problem happened about 3 times within the book, instead of one. Each time I thought the problem was solved and everything was fine again, the problem would pop up again. It made the jook feel jerky. When Pierce was fighting the bad guy, this happened far too easily and quickly. This was the big bad guy who was the whole problem for 3/4 of the book, and the fight and climax was over far too easily and quickly. I felt like I must have missed a few pages, like I blinked and the problem was solved. Even though I understand the bad guy wasn't the only problem in the book, it was still disappointing.
Truth be told I had no idea this was a teen book. I mean I kind of assumed based off the cover, but after reading a couple chapters I had thought it was an adult book because of the f bombs and the age of the main character. Well I guess they don't filter teen books as much as they used to, because that's what it is.
I can't give it a bad review, because it's not a terrible book. But in that same breath I can't give it a good one either. It's your stereotypical, insta-love teen supernatural romance. Nothing really all that special. Main female is shiny and special to male, Male instantly falls head over heels for her and will die to protect her, something something bad guy after her...you know the rest. Kind of a letdown truth be told. Wish I had known what it was from the start.
I loved Aiden and Emilia so thought this would be similar. Unfortunately this books story line was flawed, felt very rushed and the plot wasn't engaging enough. That being said I did like the crossover between this book and Aiden.
While the plot was intriguing at first by the time I got around 70% through it, I couldn’t wait to finish it. It kind of droned after awhile.
Pierce was a bit overprotective/possessive and Scarlett was a bit immature (I mean she is 18 but she got a bit whiny at times).
I thought it would be more adult but the more I read, the more I realized it was YA (as I’ve seen others point out).
There was some holes throughout the story and felt it could have been fleshed out more. They were bonded, then not, then bonded again? Sometimes I wasn’t sure if I missed something or just confused.
When Pierce explains how he became the Angel of Death, he goes into great detail as if it shouldn’t be a quote. Like “The massive doors opened and a third person stepped into the room.” And he describes the room. It’s a bit much.
I kind of figured it was Liv with the poisoning when Scar was in the hospital talking about when she didn’t get sick but I figured she was the demon in disguise, not some jealous psycho. Like really? I just felt it was a bit flat. I dunno. Then thinking the demon was dead, then alive, no he’s actually dead…oh wait, surprise! He’s alive. And then disappears because he got what he came for. Like…what?
Also, I’m not the greatest at grammar, but I found a lot (and I mean a lot) of punctuation mistakes as well as some words needing capitalized or not capitalized. I would suggest the author go back over it.
Overall, it wasn’t a bad story but nothing that sucked me in.
