I only knew Dühring because Anti-Dühring was a famous book by Friedrich Engels. However, I became aware of this name when coming across the Wikipedia page, which said that Dühring was also very antisemitic. Later, when reading The World of Yesterday by Zweig (in Sep. 2025), it sparked my interest in the book The Jewish State, where I found Dühring's name again in the Intro.
The infamous book itself does not have any translated versions in my mother tongue (as I hardly see the reason why anyone should be reading it, LOL), so apologies if I made any mistakes.
Any moral objectivist — if we are to agree that there is some right and wrongness in the world — should realize that any ideology that frames the presence of a race in a society as an inherent, unchangeable problem based on race, rather than religion or culture, is WRONG and a horrible way of thinking. To quote Ayn Rand in The Virtue of Selfishness (whose views on groups were horribly oversimplified but have some points on individuals):
“Even if it were provided--which is not--that the incidence of men of potentially superior brain power is greater among the members of certain races than among the members of others, it would still tell us nothing about any given individual and it will be irrelevant to one's judgments of him. A genius is a genius, regardless of the number of morons who belong to the same race; and a moron is a moron, regardless of the number of geniuses who share his racial origin.”
In the same logic, an upright person is an upright person, regardless of the number of people who live on exploiting others who belong to the same race. Even if it were provided (which still is not) that the incidence of men potentially “demonstrating more morally good traits” is greater among Europeans than Jews, it would still tell us nothing about any given individual and it would be irrelevant to one's judgments of him.
Unfortunately, that is anything BUT Dühring’s book is about.
For its consequences: it directly fueled antisemitism in late 19th-century Europe, as Dühring himself was quite an influential figure in the industry, and eventually “contributed” to the "Final Solution to the Jewish Question", which was the code name for the state-sponsored genocide of six million European Jews during the Holocaust.
On the other hand, it actually contributed to The Jewish State’s being written… as it directly caused the change of thought in Theodor Herzl, who once saw himself as a liberal and an Austrian patriot, mocking some of the Jewish members whom he thought were overly zealous. If someone as undeniably intelligent and knowledgeable as Dühring can write such a thing, what can Jewish people expect from the ignorant masses more susceptible to antisemitism? From his furious reaction to Dühring’s book as expressed in his diary, we can see how deeply shaken he was—and how severely his belief that the Jewish question was on the verge of disappearing had been shattered. Though he did not immediately act on this reaction at the time, his sense of self-respect began to take shape.
What made it so bad, anyway?
Dühring and others argued that Jews were a distinct and inferior "race," whose negative traits were inherent and unchangeable, regardless of assimilation or religious conversion. Yes, to him, the "Jewish problem" was NOT a religious one, and was NOT one that could be "solved" through conversion to Christianity. He took a worse stand of expulsion... He also argued that the Jewish religion was not a true faith but an "economic-political" system aimed at exploiting non-Jews, and that Jews posed a fundamental threat to the “moral and cultural development” of European nations.
This, in general, is truly one of the worst books I’ve ever come across.
