Supernatural Institute #1

Fated by Starlight

Rate this book
Passion, duty, and fate collide in this enthralling rejected mates wolf shifter romance series.

Avery
Half witch, a quarter werewolf and barely passable at either.

Still, there’s an upside to my lacking abilities. I’ll be an excellent supernatural ambassador if I can survive three months of high-intensity training. I expected it to be rough and sweaty, but I didn’t expect my commander to wear a face from the past.

Wyatt’s my former teenage crush, and he’s even more delicious than before. But as my superior he’s forbidden fruit, so I can’t let his distracting presence deter me. No matter how much I yearn for a taste.

Wyatt
Squad Commander. Pureblooded werewolf. Alpha.

My responsibilities weigh on me daily, and I’m more crushed than ever under that weight. Because my new recruit isn’t the shy, awkward girl I once knew. Avery’s become a luscious temptation that duty demands I resist.

One glorious night under the stars, my willpower slips, but no matter how much I want her, I can’t let it happen again. So I reject her, and I’m prepared for her hatred until a rare celestial event changes everything.

Now fate demands that I choose between Avery and duty. Little do I know, that decision is only the beginning…

Book one I found cutesy and intriguing. Trust me if I enjoyed cutesy that is an accomplishment. I am a cold cold lady 🥶

Love the secondary characters! World build is solid. Storyline has a great flow to it.

Hoping a little darkness will make its way into book 2. I can only take so much sweet...then I need a little sour 😉

Happy reading,
DD 🥂

PS I let a bit too much time pass between reading this and doing the review. So this is a little more brief than usual. Sometimes sis get caught up in mom life.

This was a quick read that I really needed! My mood reader ways finally lined up with the book I picked, which was a really, really, really nice surprise. The characters were fun and the story was interesting and fresh enough to keep my attention. I personally found it to be a gigantic copout but that's just me. I'll definatly be picking up the next book in this series ♡

This is a solid 3.5 stars. It lost a star for not starting the plot until literally 93%. Although enjoyable, this quick read sets up the series. Introducing the main characters and exploring the forbidden romance, adult vocational student/commander teacher romance. Add in a bit of magic and talk about the commander being an Alpha Wolf and Fated mates. This ends on a cliffhanger, and I quickly went to read the discretion of book two. It sounds like it has a lot of tropes I dislike, so I might count this as done.

The feel of his mouth devouring my skin was heaven and hell wrapped into one... I needed him. All of him. Inside me. On top of me. Around me. Owning me.

5 stars!

Holy crap, Krista Street!! Ever since I devoured her Supernatural Community series, I've been excited about starting one of her other series in the hopes that they would capture me the same way, and this first book did not disappoint! This story was everything I hope for in a shifter romance novel, and I became completely entranced once I started. I LOVED the chemistry and angsty longing between Wyatt and Avery, and I just could not get enough of them. Wyatt gave me such Twilight Edward vibes with his masochistic tendencies while trying to protect Avery from himself, while Avery was just the right blend of heartbroken and angry at Wyatt for his hot-and-cold behavior. The ending left me reeling for more, and I am so stoked to see where the rest of this series goes♡

Tropes: fated mates, forbidden love, alpha j/p hero, special snowflake heroine, hidden powers, rejected mate, secret pining, magical world, cliffhanger ending (part of a series)

My Wyatt, the werewolf hell-bent on protecting his mate from everything...including himself...

This book has such good reviews and the premise of a supernatural institute was super interesting to me. The story had so much potential, but the author should have spent way more time world building and developing the characters. I was excited to read about the different training sessions and obstacles the FMC would face, but it was barely part of the story. Also, the author missed a huge opportunity to talk about the supernatural beings at the institute and get really descriptive about the different mythical beings. Instead, she barely developed any of the side characters, except when it was absolutely necessary to further the plot. Overall, everything was just so vague and uninteresting. A majority of the story is the inner monologues of the FMC and the MMC pining after one another. Other than that, I can’t tell you anything that happened. And the ending made absolutely no sense. It ends on a pretty big cliff hanger, but I won’t be reading the sequel because I don’t care about any of these characters or the story.

The first half of this book reads in a middle to high school-ish writing style. But with 18+ themes. The second half levels out a bit as the actual plot takes precedence over all of the ogling over the hot guy/girl. It is then that the story is actually enjoyable. THEN… the right in the middle of the big climax… The end. Yep, ridiculously annoying cliffhanger.

Still, I was looking for a light romance and, until that stupid cliffhanger, that’s what I got, so I can’t complain too much.

Just know that in order to have any idea what happens in any area of the plot, the reader must pick up all the rest of the books in this four book series (I researched a bit and discovered that every book has the same nothing resolved, cliffhanger ending). I see there is also an amnesia plotline in it somewhere, which may be right up some people’s ally. Unfortunately for me, it all puts a period on any desire to continue.

Werewolf romances are my go-to kind of PNR but up until now, I stayed away from the 'Rejected mate' series. I had no desire to read that kind of anguish, to be fair. But I don't know how this snicked past me. Maybe because it was Kindle unlimited recommendations rather than GR recommendations and without reading its GR reviews and ratings, I was already midway when I noticed it was part of the bandwagon rejected mate series :(

And now it's too late. I already finished #1 and already started with #2.

2 things stand out or I am annoyed at.

Needless to say #1 ends in a total cliffhanger hence my attempt to get closer by starting with #2 already. What did I get myself into?

I really enjoyed this unique and new take on the supernatural! I was weary about the idea of the ‘supernatural forces’ as I’m not usually a fan of military-type stories but this wasn’t like that at all!

The pacing was well done & I really loved the characters! I’m looking forward to the next book.

Things I liked:
• Dual POV
• Rejected Mates
• World Building
• No love triangle 🙏🏻

Bait and switch

I feel cheated. The blurb made it seem like they would introduce the setting, then get to the actual conflict of the strange celestial occurrence. Nope. The first 75% is set up. No real plot happens until 90% done. There are a few pages of actual story, and then it ends on a cliff hanger. All of it was telling rather than showing, and it read like a YA novella.

It was entertaining but the issue I have with this book is that the fantasy plot line isn’t very strong, neither is the romance really. So I guess just the plot in general was lacking for me.

I haven't binge-finished a series this fast in a minute! It's definitely an easy listen and on Kindle Unlimited!

I listened to all four of these books in quick succession becuase they're short which almost made them better? It is able to hold my attention with quick action scenes and just enough detail to keep it from being a full-on novella short.

This was book 1/4 and it was fun!

Nothing Happened

Nothing happened, and it ended abruptly. Once it ended, I felt like I wasted my time. There is no sub-plot to make you feel like something was resolved. Just training and partying.

1 🌟

I was in the mood for a shifter, rejected mates romance. Instead, I got a story about an incredibly dumb woman and her incredibly childish love interest with no real rejection at all. Just a bunch of meaningless words on the pages. All the tropes were crammed into this and without a distinct plot or reasonings for these tropes to be included, it just came off as a nonsensical mess.

Everyone male the FMC encountered stared at her “boobs”. Constantly. In almost every scene the men did this.

The FMC had a high, round ass, wide hips, big “boobs” and a narrow waist.

All the men wanted her. All the time.

The MMC had a chiseled jaw, a chiseled abdomen, broad shoulders and thick thighs.

Despite having known each other as acquaintances when they were teens, both MCs have nothing in common except for their attraction to each other. It goes no further than this.

Suddenly, by the end of the book they’re in love and I cannot for the life of me tell you why. Because there is no reason. And you can’t use mates as an excuse because the FMC is not a werewolf and can’t feel it the way the MMC can. All she knows is that she wants to bang his brains out.

The word boobs actually Icked me out in this book. It just felt so… idk.. juvenile.

Then again, the whole damn book was juvenile.

The FMC thought that she could have a relationship with her commander. She does not hesitate to have a sexual encounter with him by doing her best to make herself look more alluring to him. She thinks that after one fumble, they are now gonna be together forever. She becomes so delusional that she bakes him a tray of cookies and thinks it’s a swell idea to go to the commander quarters to personally deliver it to him.

At no point does she think, oh, this might be bad as these relationships are forbidden. But no, our queen doesn’t. She thinks it’s perfectly reasonable.

There were a few inconsistencies in this book, but the one that really stood out was the recruits apartment.

The author states that the apartment is bare bones. It’s just a place to sleep, nothing more.

But then a few chapters later, the kitchen magically has all the ingredients to bake cakes, cookies, pastries, you name it.

Everything about this book was lazy. The plot, the characters, the world-building - the whole story was just shallow and slapdash.

I’m not going to lie- having never read this author before, I saw the clique book title and thought this series was going to be exactly that- clique, with everything expected. I started the book because, clique or not, I’m a sucker for a good shifter romance. But let me tell you- I WAS WRONG! This series surprised, excited, and drew me in like no other shifter series I’ve read before. Yes, there is a delicious slow burn romance. Yes, there is a main character you absolutely fall in love with. Yes, there is a mystery that keeps you racing for the next paragraph, the next page, the next book! This series has it all! Beautifully complex characters, plots and sub plots that satisfy even the most ADHD reader, and a romance that is actually healthy- which is saying something given the typical werewolf romance novels. I highly, highly recommend!

3.5 this book wasn’t bad but it wasn’t amazing, i feel like the main characters had 0 chemistry and i wish we got flashbacks to there past or literally some substance at all that would make me believe that they actually were interested with each other…. romance aside i did enjoy the plot and i am very tempted to pick up book 2 but the romance was just🫠

Lost interest a little over halfway in. It started promising but really fell off around the spicy scene. Also, incredibly predictable.

You know, this is an example of how NOT to string out a story. The initial 99% of the story is a fun 3-star where the only negative is being a bit heavy on the romance's melodrama.

Then they cold-cock you on the last page, like, "Hurry up, you have GOT to see this!" -- I swear, that's nearly verbatum.

The End.

What the living eff? That's like a parody of a ham-handed cliffhanger. Boo.

Then, I read volume 2's Kindle Sample, and it ends before anything substantive on the big topic is said.

So, basically, they've thumped your arm, jammed in the needle, and you'll need 28 volumes to find out wtf is going on.

So screw it, I'm out.

Fated by starlight

This review contains spoilers..

This book is put together sloopy. It's not appealing for the H to choose his duty to his friend over his desire for his mate. The scene in which that happened is horribly written. It's way to obvious that the author is trying to draw it out as long as possible. It reminds me of when a teacher assigns an essay with a specific word count and the student just starts spouting gibberish to meet the count. More words doesn't always equal good writing.

DNF- at 70%- too cringey and just not good

It’s just so cringey and not well written. Their relationship is all lust and not really any well developed tension or emotions. And Avery, the FMC feels really young and not at the same time. She’s just not a believable character.

I stuck out as long as I did because I enjoyed the world and the idea of a magical task force, but the characters, dialogue, and writing just did not live up to it.

I hate tropes about miscommunication. They are the most frustrating. When a single relationship spirals all because of one thing. Ah well, wouldn't have an interesting book without a bit of drama.

First: dual POV, no love triangle, rejected fated mate (sort of), slow burn, fast read, good action, great baked goods. NA but feels at times like YA. Cliffhanger.

Guess what, y'all? There's a freaking cliffhanger, but no worries (sort of) - the next book is already out. This is essentially a story about unrequited crushes, grown-up (ish) feelings, and two people who clearly are meant for one another but are caught up in a situation in which if they want to be together one of them has to give up their dream. I like them both, like him better.

Avery, our FMC, is a young woman who is mixed race human, witch and werewolf. It's rough to be a female supe in this world. Apparently females can't do all of the cool and powerful things that males can. Neither can mixed race human/supes, which makes Avery weak among her classmates and vulnerable in her future profession. She is attending Supernatural Institute because she has to pass a three-month training ordeal in order to follow in her parents' footsteps as an international ambassador among supes. Because of her mixed genetic combo, she has very little power and is essentially human. As a result, she struggles the most among her classmates and is last in every physical training exercise.

I like her but... and here's where the book lost a star (dang it!). Avery is well educated and is presumably in her low/mid-20s. However, she doesn't speak like someone who is either college-educated or gifted in the art of negotiation. She comes across in many scenes as a teenager who is crushing over the hot boy and baking him treats to help him like her. I kept forgetting that this story is post-college and that she was selected by the institute because of her brain skills. All that said, she is brave and is a very loyal friend with natural protective instincts.

If not for some lady bits coming into contact with some man bits, this felt more YA than NA. It isn't. I really like that Avery is totally comfortable with her sexuality, and isn't the "I swear I'm ready" lower lip biting virgin trope. She likes being bitten, which is convenient when most available guys in her world are vamps or wolves. Or fae. Not sure if they do sexy biting, although they have the teeth to do the job. Poor thing spends a whole lot of time being aroused by vamps and a particular wolf shifter...both of whom can smell her problem. Don't worry: this isn't a love triangle.

Enter Wyatt, her group commander and her super-hot (no supe pun intended) former high school crush! He's hot, cus, well he's a wolf shifter, but he also is kind, supportive, patient and all that is good about an alpha (and a book boyfriend). He's also territorial and protective of her, which is a problem because no fraternizing is allowed between supervisors/trainers and subordinates/trainees. Avery's high school crush reignites (if your imagination is as good as mine you will totally get why she's hot for Wyatt). Wyatt remembers her as that girl who was way out of his league. He still believes that, but his wolf has other ideas. Wyatt's painful struggle to nip their attraction in the half-bloooming bud is tested time and again, and his tendency to want to or actually save her tips off colleagues and his boss that he has a problem (man, is his wolf a pain in the backside). There were places where I wished we had his wolve's POV, too. What a fabulous running commentary that would be! I loved the moments Wyatt and Avery had to talk informally. They were sweet and I would have liked more of those conversations. We learned a lot about how their bodies responded to one another, but no cold showers that I can recall, even though they needed them very often.

This review is really long because I really liked the book. I need a 4.5 choice. I also need my workday to be over so I can read the second book. Rumor has it that one has a cliffhanger, too, but the third book is out.
Enjoy!

Addicted to shifter, reject, romance books…😂 how did I get here?

I don’t know, but I really enjoyed this read on a lazy day, read in one sitting, it’s was easy flowing and kept me interested.
I love Wyatt as a character, he has a great balance of brooding male vs caring and affectionate.

I enjoyed the magical elements and law in this book, a mixture of supernatural species and parallel worlds I found it really immersive and the world building was better than I would have expected, I’m excited to see more from the rest of the series.

Be warned it’s a cliffhanger but all are available on kindle unlimited and are perfect for a quick read with feeling.
