Ann Matthews Martin was born on August 12, 1955. She grew up in Princeton, New Jersey, with her parents and her younger sister, Jane. After graduating from Smith College, Ann became a teacher and then an editor of children's books. She's now a full-time writer.

Ann gets the ideas for her books from many different places. Some are based on personal experiences, while others are based on childhood memories and feelings. Many are written about contemporary problems or events. All of Ann's characters, even the members of the Baby-sitters Club, are made up. But many of her characters are based on real people. Sometimes Ann names her characters after people she knows, and other times she simply chooses names that she likes.

Ann has always enjoyed writing. Even before she was old enough to write, she would dictate stories to her mother to write down for her. Some of her favorite authors at that time were Lewis Carroll, P. L. Travers, Hugh Lofting, Astrid Lindgren, and Roald Dahl. They inspired her to become a writer herself.

Since ending the BSC series in 2000, Ann’s writing has concentrated on single novels, many of which are set in the 1960s.

After living in New York City for many years, Ann moved to the Hudson Valley in upstate New York where she now lives with her dog, Sadie, and her cats, Gussie, Willy and Woody. Her hobbies are reading, sewing, and needlework. Her favorite thing to do is to make clothes for children.

I forgot a lot of what happened in this book, including the introduction of the DeWitt family, so it was a nice read. And any book with Jeff in it is bound to be a fun read, even if him and his sisters are acting insufferable lmao. (I can't wait for the girls in the BSC to show Mary Anne the postcards Dawn was sending them.)

this is my first time reading this book!

in yet another subpar book by my least favorite ghostwriters Jahnna Beecham and Malcolm Hillgartner jeff schafer comes to stoneybrook for a week, and the schafer-spier family completely falls apart/acts like a bunch of immature jerks. jeff acts like a baby, but dawn backs him hard because he's her biological sibling, I guess. they go on a trip to boston and waste it, and finally the parents intervene. meanwhile, in an obviously mirroring subplot, mrs. barrett starts dating franklin dewitt and their kids don't get along.

highlights:
-there's a barrett-dewitt kids chapter in which mallory is totally on top of how to take care of a ton of kids and helps out mrs. barrett a lot. I like it because it's very mallory.
-in general, this is the introduction of the barrett-dewitt family, as it will soon be. mr. dewitt and mrs. barrett get married later on (thought I can't quite remember when).
-when going whale watching in boston dawn wears her "save the whales" button and her "the earth: save it or leave it" sweatshirt. oh, dawn. you are so ridiculous and one-dimensional.
-on the way to the airport to drop jeff off, they sing al jolson's "california here I come" (no, not the oc's theme song). I choose to consider this an I love lucy reference, since they sing that song in the episode where they're going on the road trip to california for ricky to make a movie.

lowlights/nitpicks:
-there's a reference to when they went to disneyland when dawn visited, and jeff raced from ride to ride, making sure they rode every single one. that's not true. in Dawn on the Coast (go look at my review for it to see my huge rant about the disneyland part) mr. schafer only lets jeff go on one "roller coaster" (as though big thunder mountain railroad is a real roller coaster -- hah!) and they only go to a few of the different themed lands. since they went on pirates of the caribbean they were not allowed to go on the jungle cruise (even though those rides are literally about a three minute walk from each other) because it would supposedly take too much time. I can't decide if I'm more annoyed at the inconsistencies from book to book or the inaccuracies about disneyland.
-jeff says something about "washington" (ugh. it's called dc, dude.) having the "aerospace" museum. I think you mean the air and space museum.
-mary anne says something about "washington" (ugh) having the smithsonian institution, which is "one of the all-time great museums." do you mean the castle where the entire smithsonian collection used to be housed? the smithsonian institution is an overarching organization that encompasses many museums.
-jeff is the worst. when they're about to leave for boston he says he wants to go to dc instead. WHAT A BRAT.
-yes, the schafer-spier kids are being brats, but when mary anne tries to have tigger post for the family photo and sharon says "oh, no, you don't. I will not have animals in this portrait," I get MAD. PETS ARE MEMBERS OF THE FAMILY, SHARON. YOU ARE A TURD. you and your fake vegetarian daughter are made for each other.

claudia outfit:
-"Today for instance she was dressed in black overalls that she had splattered with pink and green and yellow globs of paint. Her purple high top tennis shoes matched her purple long sleeve T-shirt. Claud has beautiful black shining hair that she'd fixed in a French braid. On top of her head perched a little white painter's cap that she'd also splattered with paint."

mrs. barrett outfit:
-"She was wearing cream-colored linen slacks, a blazer, and a lavender silk blouse with a pearl necklace and earrings."

dawn outfit:
-"I was in the kitchen, dressed in a jean skirt, red cotton T-shirt, and blue chamois shirt knotted at the waist."

snacks in claudia's room:
-ring-dings in the bottom drawer of her dresser
-candy kisses on her closet shelf

dawn is all excited because jeff is coming to visit for a few days. she & mary anne are tidying up his room & making his bed for him, & richard suggests that they all takine a family trip together over the weekend, to either boston or washington d.c. thus begins our A-plot.

our B-plot features the barretts. mrs. barrett has a new boyfriend named franklin dewitt. she seems really excited about him, & he's gone out of his way to get the kids to like him too. when mrs. barrett goes out on a dinner date with franklin to chez maurice (hence necessitating dawn's babysitting services), the kids want to wait outside for him to get back.

dawn, mary anne, richard, & sharon all head out to the airport to pick up jeff. everyone is excited to see him, & he's excited to see all of them, & to catch up with his best stoneybrook friends, the pike triplets. damn. i gave this book four stars & i am realizing only now, writing the recap, that it's kind of boring. so i'm going to pick up the pace.

basically, jeff gets grumpy because hanging with the triplets isn't as much fun as he thought it would be. they want to play softball & he wants to play soccer. they have other friends that jeff doesn't know & they don't invite jeff to tag along when they go to hang out with those friends. this causes him to be kind of a complainer back at the house. richard took a few days off work to look after jeff while everyone else is at work or school, but jeff doesn't have much fun. he & richard don't really have anything in common. richard takes jeff to some museums, which jeff finds boring, & when they try to play catch in the yard, richard is almost comically unathletic. dawn feels sorry for jeff & tries to be supportive of him, but ends up making a few comments that mary anne finds offensive. so dawn & mary anne start giving each other the silent treatment.

meanwhile, it turns out that mr. dewiit has four children of his own. mrs. barrett calls for a babysitter to accompany the whole group on a picnic & play in the park. mallory gets the job, which is fortunate, because she is able to give mrs. barrett some useful suggestions on dealing with having a big family. for example, mrs. barrett is trying to pack picnic basket for the group, but she doesn't know what kind of sandwiches to make because she doesn't know what the dewitt kids like. mallory suggests just packing a loaf of bread & a variety of fixings so the kids can make their own sandwiches. mr. dewitt & mrs. barrett also seems surprised to discover that seven children, two adults, & a babysitter won't all fit in one car. they go to a petting zoo, but it's a disaster. it's crowded, a goat steals one of the kids' sandwiches, & everyone fights. mrs. barrett is very sad. she's way into mr. dewitt & is concerned that the kids can't get along with each other.

by the time dawn's family leaves on their trip to boston, dawn & jeff aren't speaking to mary anne & everyone is feeling the strain. & here's where i'm going to get nitpicky, because i lived in boston for eight years. richard makes everyone get up at 5am so they can "be in boston by lunchtime". um...what? we've already established that stoneybrook is on the coast of connecticut, because the local community center offers boating lessons, leading to dawn getting stranded on a desert island. even if it's as far south as new haven, it still wouldn't take more than three hours to drive up to boston. & that's being very generous. let's say the family took two hours to get ready to leave & eat breakfast--which also incredibly generous. that would mean they arrive in boston at 10am. which is hardly "lunchtime".

also, when they drive into the city, dawn says they have to cross the harvard bridge. the harvard bridge connects cambridge & boston along mass ave. it is north of the city. connecticut is south of massachusetts. what crazy-ass route are they taking that they wound up on the harvard bridge coming into boston proper? maybe this is why richard made everyone get up so early. he decided to take the scnic route in from maine.

anyway, they do all the typical boston tourist crap. they stay at the parker house hotel near city hall, they walk the freedom trail, they have snacks at quincy market. but jeff is kind of acting like a jerk the whole time. before they even left, jeff announced that he wanted to go to washington d.c. after all, & richard said no, because they already made hotel reservations in boston, & jeff asked him to cancel the reservations. when they get to their rooms in boston, mary anne decides to stay with sharon & richard instead (bet they loved that) & jeff suggests ordering gross food from room service & sending it to mary anne's room. like that's a really good prank or something. but mary anne is kind of being a jerk too. jeff asks some question about some historical site they're seeing, & mary anne corrects him like he's an idiot. & then two seconds later, she asks if the boston tea party was a real party.

okay, needle scratch. hold the phones. when i was in school & we did social studies, we mostly studied our own local history, which means i know way more than i ever needed to know about ohio & michigan going to war over the port of toledo (i'm from ohio, on the coast of lake erie). jared went to school in massachusetts & learned mostlu about massachusetts stuff, so he knows like everything there is to know about the revolutionary war. but we all learned about the boston tea party. it was kind of a big deal. & mary anne, going to school one state away, should definitely have some grasp of what the boston tea party was. come on, mary anne. get it together.

anyway, with all the fighting going on, dawn feels obligated to take jeff's side. she also wastes practically her entire vacation writing gossipy postcards to the other members of the babysitters club about all the fighting going on.

the next day, the family splits up. sharon takes dawn & jeff whale-watching, while richard & mary anne go to the MFA. afterward, the parents suggest that they all go to the aquarium (which made me wonder where they met up, because the whale-watching boats dock literally next door to the aquarium, & if i was dawn, jeff, & sharon i'd be a little annoyed at leaving the area only to turn around & go right back), but jeff doesn't want to go. they try to talk him into it, but he refuses. if i was his mom, i'd say, "too bad, we're going to the aquarium, like it or lump it." but sharon gives in & takes jeff & dawn (who decided to stick with jeff & her mom) to the science museum. which is all the way over in cambridge. how are they getting around? on the T? that seems like a lot of subway riding, if you ask me. but they only brought one car. cabs, maybe? that night, sharon & richard suggest a restaurant in chinatown for dinner, but jeff says he's too tired & wants to stay in & get room service. again, sharon relents, & again, dawn sticks with them.

but the next morning, richard & sharon yell at everyone & tell them to make an effort to get along. they do some other tourist-y shit, i don't remember. then they get in the car to go back to stoneybrook. the kids all have a fight over the window seats & jeff declares that he wants to go home to california that night. richard puts his foot down & says no, his ticket is for sunday & that's that. plus they're having a photographer come to take a family portrait & jeff has to be there for that.

meanwhile, claudia & shannon are sitting for the barretts & dewitts (anyone think maybe these kids might have an easier time getting along if their parents didn't dump them on sitters every fifteen minutes?). right away, the kids start fighting. so claudia takes the barretts into the backyard while shannon stays out front with the dewitts. the kids try to play games like red light green light & mother, may i? but it's less fun with fewer kids. so eventually the kids are practically begging to play together. which was claudia's & shannon's plan all along. by the time mr. dewitt & mrs. barrett come home, the kids are all getting along famously. problem? solved.

when the photographer comes to take the family photo at dawn's house, sharon hulks out at dawn & jeff for not being dressed nicely, & then both richard & sharon freak out at mary anne for not being dressed nicely. everyone gets dressed up, but then they all argue about where to stage the photo. sharon wants everyone sitting on the porch. richard wants everyone in the living room, in front of the fireplace. richard gets the line of the book for suggesting that his idea is "elegant. more elegant than a family of hillbillies sitting on a porch." haha! finally the photographer suggests test shots in a few different locations. then mary anne holds up the proceedings even more by insisting that tigger be in the photo. sharon tries to say no, he's not a member of the family, he's just a cat, but richard convinces her to let mary anne hold the damn cat already. not that tigger is too pumped about the idea. the first batch of test shots is awful. everyone looks angry & tense. for some reason, this epic waste of time & money makes everyone laugh...& that makes them all make up with each other. they finally take some nice photos, everyone apologizes & hugs it out, & it's all very "the waltons family christmas". then jeff has to leave to go back to california.

when the test shots arrive in the mail so the family can decide which shots to buy, they decide to frame an angry photo & a nice photo so they will be forever reminded of their family feud & how silly it is to fight. well, "forever"...until the house burns down in about sixty books.

This book wasn't one of the best book that I have read. I thought that it was a bit boring in some parts.

I didn't agree with much that Jeff said or did in this one, with the exception of his point that museums are for wimps. I realized that same thing as a kid, and I've never looked back!

Dawn’s Family Feud
It starts with Dawn’s mom asking for “the squirty stuff”. We find out she means the Wipe-Away cleaner and it’s under the bathroom sink. Which leads to Dawn calling her mother a slob (and I’m surprised she didn’t throw in disorganized like she usually does). They’re all cleaning up because Jeff (who now lives in California) is coming back for a visit. Jeff will be there for a week. Maryanne asks Dawn what she’ll do with him. Dawn says play frisbee in the park, go bike riding, play video games and take him to the toy store down town.

Maryanne says it’s too bad they have to go to school while he’s there. Dawn says at least it’s just Monday-Wednesday. Then they have a four-day weekend. Maryanne says her dad wants them all to go to Washington D.C or Boston and Dawn says either will work. Richard comes in to inspect their work and shows Dawn how to do “hospital corners” on the bed. Dawn notices he seems kind of nervous because he keeps repeating things and knows it’s because he’ll be the one entertaining Jeff while Dawn and Maryanne are at school and Sharon is at work and he’s only raised daughters. (Where’s the other hidden one?). Sharon tells him to stop worrying. Jeff will take the lead. Just follow.

She suggest tossing a ball around only she’s seemed to have forgotten Richard doesn’t do the sports thing. Richard says they put a lot of work into the house and suggests they keep it that way. Maryanne says fine with her. She likes a clean house. This annoys Dawn (even tho just a few sentences ago she said her mom was a slob). They hear Tigger and find he’s locked himself in the closet again. Then Maryanne and Dawn laugh over Dawn saying he was gonna jump out at Jeff and yell PURRPRISE!

When Maryanne goes to sit for the Barrett’s Marnie and Suzi are sitting in a cardboard box singing the wheels on the bus. Then Buddy comes out and starts dragging them and says he’s the tow-truck driver and the bus broke down. This causes an argument between Buddy and Suzi. Marnie wants to get out. Suzi wants Buddy to stop. Dawn tells Buddy there’s a red light and gets Marnie to make a ding sound indicating they want to get off the bus.

Marnie now what’s to stay on the bus so Buddy says now he’s the sheriff and he’ll arrest her. Suzi says she’s the deputy. When Mrs. Barrett comes out she looks great in a silk lavender blouse and white linen pants. She says she has a date with Franklin DeWitt at Chez Maurice. She says Franklin wants to spend time with the kids and Buddy seems excited by it and says they can kick the soccer ball around or wrestle like they did last time (and it was fun). She looks pleased that Buddy is bonding with Franklin and Dawn realizes it must be serious.

The kids want to stay outside and wait for Franklin but Dawn suggests they go inside and eat and pretend like their also at a restaurant. She gives them crayons and lets them draw their favorite foods on a menu. Dawn tries to dig some more but the kids don’t really know that much. Dawn wonders if Franklin has kids. Buddy says he hasn’t seen any. Then she pretends to be their waitress.

Shortly after Mrs. Barrett comes home with Franklin. He’s friendly and compliments Dawn on “saving Natalie’s life” a while back. Then he surprises all the kids with kazoo’s (which would have went right back home with him in that bag when he left). Dawn is in such a good mood she goes home and makes pasta salad. It’s her favorite and Jeff’s. Thinking of Jeff she decides to give him a call. Jeff says he’s counting down (5 more days). Before they hang up (he has to go have dinner) he tells her he misses her.

At the BSC meeting, Mrs. Barrett calls because she and Franklin will be going on a family picnic together. Dawn explains this is her new boyfriend and Stacey adds he has 4 kids and they’re about the same ages as her kids. Everyone but Mal is busy so she gets the job. Claudia wonders if there’s a special reason. Maryanne says maybe they’ll get married. Maryanne thinks its romantic. Claudia thinks it’s crazy (and images all those people trying to get in the bathroom). Mal says it’s not so bad if your organized. Dinners can be like a party. (I think I’d have to agree with Claudia). Dawn is distracted during the movie because Jeff is coming on this day and answers she thinks Kristy’s idea for advertising is great when she’s asked if the new fliers should be pink or green. Mrs. Spier calls and reminds them to come straight home and he’ll be there in 2 hours. Dawn sees she’s a minute late getting home and drags Maryanne home.

At dinner, they all wonder how Jeff will look. Richard asks for suggestions of what to do. Maryanne says take him to the mall. Dawn says take him to the movies. (He loves movies). When they see Jeff, he excitedly tells them about the flight. He says “They gave me the cheese plate. It had these neat little toothpicks I also got the kid fun pack. See? It has a deck of cards, a pack of crayons, and this cool Robin Hood comic book. The flight attendant also handed out special barf bags for kids. I’m not kidding. Look. Mine’s got cartoons all over it.” Mrs. Schaffer’s gotten his favorite yogurt double chocolate trip.

He's excited that he’ll be out of school a week. He says he’ll call the Pike triplets and hopes they play soccer. Maryanne says they’re into baseball now. He says he wants to hike, ride bikes, and explore the passage. Richard asks if he’d rather go to Washington or Boston. Jeff is undecided. Washington’s got cool monuments and the Aerospace Museum. But Boston has that neat old ship. They go back and forth debating the different things Washington and Boston have and decide they have time to decide. Mrs. Spier says in the meantime; they have a surprise for them. She’s going to have a family portrait taken on Sunday.

When Mal gets there, Buddy and Suzi are sitting on the porch in a bad mood. They like Frankin but they don’t like that he’s bringing his kids. Mrs. Barrett is panicking. She’s supposed to bring sandwiches but doesn’t know what kind Franklin’s kids like. Mal tells her to get dressed and she’ll handle it. She says just to pack PBJ, bread, cheese, and ham and let everyone make what they like. Then they can have apple slices for desert. To cheer them up, she teaches Suzi and Buddy to make pirate hats out of newspapers. Franklin and his kids arrive. There’s eight-year-old Lindsey, six-year-old Taylor, four-year-old Madeleine, and two-year-old Ryan. Ryan is scared of Pow.

The DeWitt kids don’t really look all that excited about meeting the Barrett kids either. They just stand their staring at each other. Then Franklin realizes everyone won’t fit in his car. So, Mrs. Barrett says she’ll take her kids and Mal and Franklin can take his kids. On the way there, Mal tries to make conversation about Lindsey but Buddy says he doesn’t care. Then they get a flat. While the adults change the tire, Mal gets the kids to play the license plate game and for the younger ones she adds finding the colors of cars. But when they get to the petting zoo, all the picnic tables are filled.

Mal suggests they make the sandwiches in the parking lot and eat them as they walk through the zoo. A goat immediately steals Madeline’s sandwich. Franklin gives her his. Then Ryan gets scared and Franklin has to pick him up. They all go to the barn. The kids are start to complain. Marnie throws up. Mrs. Barrett says they should go to the park and see Hansel and Gretal but they have to wait an hour. Franklin says they should skip rocks but there aren’t any and Suzi and Madeline sock their socks. The witch scares Marnie and she has to take her to the car. By the end of the day, Mrs. Barrett looks like she’s crying. She tells Mallory she wanted the day to be perfect and it was a complete disaster.

On Saturday, Jeff goes to spend the day with the triplets. When he gets home they go to Casa Grande for dinner. (He loves Mexican food). After that they’ll go to the movies. He picks “The Mutant From Outer Space”. The movie turns out to be so bad it’s good. On the way home, they decide on Boston. The next morning, Richard tells Jeff to clean up after himself which he isn’t used to doing because his dad has a house keeper. He leaves the house going to the Pikes in a bad mood. Then he comes home early, and tells Dawn the triplets don’t even play soccer and they went off with another guy named Scott (and didn’t invite him). Dawn tells him that sometimes people just grew apart. He wonders what he’ll do for three days. Dawn reminds him he’ll have Richard but he doesn’t seem all that thrilled about it.

On Monday, Dawn finds Jeff sitting at the table looking sad. He says he’s bored. He says Richard took him to a museum. Richard comes into the room and offers to play catch with him. Dawn watches them out the window and sees that Jeff is a much better player. Jeff tries to act nice to Richard and acts like he’s having a time. Dawn has to go over to the Barrett’s to sit for an hour while Mrs. Barrett makes differ for Franklin and his kids. The kids are sitting on the couch in their best clothes. The room is spotless. She’s making lasagna, garlic cheese sticks, a fresh broccoli and carrot medley, and spumoni ice cream.

While she’s getting ready, Dawn suggests they make mask. Suzi wants to make a Little Mermaid mask. Buddy wants to make a dinosaur and says they’d better hurry before the other kids steal them. Dawn says she doubt it but they might want to play with them and ask Buddy if he’d let them. He says maybe. At 5:20 Dawn has to leave to be at the BSC meeting. Dawn tells them about Mr. Barrett trying to hard and (Stacey says) that Franklin should just accept her like she is. Maryanne says her dad is doing the same thing with Jeff. Dawn says taking him to boring museums isn’t the way to get close to him. Maryanne says she thought he liked sports. Dawn says he does with someone who can actually play. Her dad looks like a dork trying to. Maryanne says her dad took time off *for* Jeff. Maybe he’d like to be alone. Dawn says she was joking. Can’t she take a joke.

Maryanne says if it was a joke, it wasn’t funny. The others don’t say anything. Jeff pretends to be sick so he won’t have to spend the day with Richard. Maryanne gets upset with Jeff. Dawn takes Jeff’s side. Kristy and Maryanne sit for the Barrett’s and the DeWitts. They argue over what kind of pizza they want. The DeWitt’s don’t want onions. Maryanne says they remind her of Dawn and Jeff. No matter what her dad makes they want to change it. Then the DeWitt’s say they want hamburgers and the Barrett’s say they want pizza. Kristy says they’re having pizza deal with it. Take the onions off.

They try to sit them next to each other so they can bond but they just argue. Then they start throwing food. Then they argue over the Play-Doh (after dinner). So, they separate them. Maryanne takes the Barrett’s upstairs and Kristy takes the others in the rec room. On the way home, Maryanne and Kristy agree that they think the kids are scared their parents will get married and they’ll get lost in the equation. Then she vents about how Jeff’s acting spoiled and Dawn’s taking up for him. She says she doesn’t know how this vacation is gonna turn out.

Maryanne and Dawn get into a fight over Jeff not hanging up his jacket which ends with Dawn telling Maryanne her father is ruining Jeff’s vacation. Dawn tries to go by Maryanne’s room (to make up?) but she doesn’t respond. At five am, Richard wakes Dawn up and says it’s time to get on the road. He wants to get there by lunch time. Dawn and Maryanne are cordial. Jeff is in a foul mood-having to have woken up so early-. Then when their in the car, Jeff says he wants to go to Washington. Dawn tries to reason with him but he gives her the silent treatment. In the car, the adults suggest a sing along, but Maryanne and Jeff don’t join. They suggest the game “I’m Going On Trip”. Jeff says if he were going to Washington he’d bring a baseball, but Maryanne has just said a baboon. He says he didn’t know he was supposed to say a C thing and Maryanne says he did. After that Dawn freezes Maryanne out.

The adults get two rooms at the Paker House but Maryanne refuses to stay in the room with Dawn and Jeff. So, she stays with the adults. First they go on “The Freedom Trail” which is a walking tour of important places in Boston. Maryanne acts like a walking tour book the whole time. Dawn snaps at her and tells her the only thing that makes her smart is the guide book. They split up. Richard and Maryanne go to tour the top part of Fanueil Hal and Jeff, Dawn, and their mom go to the marketplace.

The next day they go to the Harbor to watch the whales. Well, Jeff, Dawn and their mom. Maryanne and Richard are going to the Museum of Fine Arts and having lunch at the Bostonian Hotel and visiting the Boston Tea Party Museum. The adults seem regretful that they didn’t go with the other. Richard suggests they go to the Aquarium. Everyone says they want to except for Jeff. Richard spouts off a lot of impressive facts about it but Jeff isn’t impressed and says he just saw seals at the wharf.

Dawn and her mother want to go but they don’t want to leave Jeff. So, Maryanne and Richard go and Dawn, Jeff, and her mom go to the Science Museum. That night, they finally agree on Chinese food at the Imperial Palace, but Jeff says he’s tired and wants to stay in. Sharon says she’ll stay behind and so does Dawn. After they leave, Jeff starts joking about what he’ll have but Dawn sees her mother looking like she’s about to cry.

The next day, Richard and Sharon tell them that their DONE! They make Maryanne and Dawn to make up and tell Jeff to stop acting like a spoiled brat. They say they’re going to spend the day together. They’ll go to Boston Common and the Public Garden and then they’ll go to the John Hancock Observatory. It doesn’t last. They all get in a fight on the way back about the window. Jeff says he wants to go back to California tonight. Sharon says he’ll stay until Sunday. Dawn is relieved when they make it home but wishes the feud would end.

Claudia and Shannon sit for the Barretts and the DeWitts. Claudia takes the Barretts to play “Red Light Green Light” but its no fun to play with so few people. Same with “Mother May I.” She suggests getting the DeWitt kids and Buddy and Suzi promise not to fight. Shannon does the same thing. Then they all talk about how weird their parents are being and they say their going to tell their parents to cool it. After this, they all are fine with each other.

Richard and Sharon argue over the portrait. Richard wants a formal picture inside. Sharon wants one outside on the front porch. The photographer says he’ll take both. Maryanne and Sharon argue over having Tigger in the picture. Richard says he doesn’t see the harm but Tigger runs off. All the pictures look terrible. They’re all awkward and looking mad. But then they laugh at how bad they look and it goes better after that. They all apologize to each other and make up.
My Thoughts:
I think that Richard tried but you can’t expect a relationship to happen overnight. I do and don’t get why he thought a good thing to do was to take him to a museum. I know he was trying to probably share a little bit of who he was with Jeff but maybe another *kind* of museum would have worked better. Here we have the Mc Wayne Center which is kind of like a science museum. A long (long) time ago we had the Discovery Museum. Richard just needed to *think*. Dawn and Maryanne gave him some ideas (movies and mall). Or he simply just could have asked Jeff what he wanted to do. I kinda know what it’s like when a person calls themselves “wanting to get to know you” but they don’t really want to invest the *time* to actually do the work to get to know you. But I think also that Jeff acted like a brat and should have cut Richard a little slack. Richard does tend to come off a little stuffy but he also could have spoken up and suggested something they do. After reading this, I think I’d like to visit Boston. There were a couple of things I wouldn’t have minded visiting. I can’t believe I didn’t review this one before because I remembered reading it and having it.

2 stars. When Dawn and Mary Anne are fighting it’s usually my least favorite BSC read and this was no different. This one was a pain to get through. The entire dumbass feud is Jeff’s fault and then everyone just starts acting petty with each other. I was annoyed and even the side plot in this wasn’t that interesting.

Dawn's family gets into fight when Jeff comes for a visit, and bicker their way through Boston. In the meantime Franklin DeWitt and his kids enter the picture and prove no match for the bratty Barretts.

Things I remember from reading this as a kid:
I know I read this book since the whole thing was completely familiar. I remember the Schafer/Spiers taking a family portrait and I remember they went on a trip to Boston. I remember the beginning of the DeWitt saga that seemed to go on forever. I know it must be referenced in other books because I remember the kids fighting over the house they end up buying, the wedding, the remodeling of their house, and a bunch of other things. I never liked the Barretts (even today I have trouble seeing past their cranky, loud, messy personas) and seeing them pitted against the DeWitts in a storyline that drags on over books and books in the series is the most unfun thing ever.

Things I've considered since reading this as an adult:
Dawn is so excited that Jeff didn't have a sudden growth spurt so he looks exactly the same as she remembers him. Little does she know that none of people who enter Stoneybrook will ever have a growth spurt. . . ever, ever again.

Mallory is way more level headed and on of things than either Mrs Barrett or Mr DeWitt. I'm guessing this comes from being part of a big family, and learning to roll with the punches. It's somewhat obnoxious that an eleven year old is solving all the problems of grown ups with kids, but whatever. Mrs Barrett never struck me as being very mature anyway.

Although I vaguely remember Dawn and Mary Anne and Jeff fighting in this book I don't remember the details. As an adult it was kind of annoying to read, but I do admire that it was written in a realistic way. I totally felt like I was listening to their petty, awkward fighting and just wanting them to grow up and shut up. They fight just like siblings who know exactly how to push each other's buttons, and reading it got very tedious, especially because Dawn and Sharon let Jeff get away with acting like a spoiled, selfish brat. I guess because they never see him they let him get away with crap like "I don't want to go to the aquarium. I don't want to go out to eat," instead of just saying, "Too bad, we are doing this and that's final" the way my parents would have done when I was ten years old.

This was sort of interesting book, in a boring way. It's just about a family that squabbles during a family vacation. Big deal. I think one of the reasons I prefer to travel by myself is because of the horrible fights my sister and I would get into when we were stuck in the car together, or stuck in a tent together. However, since the Schafer/Spiers don't spend much time together I can see why they fell to fighting so quickly. I think this is the first time they have spent a long amount of time together, especially on a trip. Jeff visited during the Super Special The Baby Sitters Island Adventure, and Super Special Snowbound! but he only stayed for a long weekend, and the family wasn't trapped together in an unfamiliar place for several days. So this is really the first time he is living through the nitty-gritty life with the unfamiliar Spiers, and the mother and sister who have changed as they've adjusted themselves to life with Mary Anne and Richard.

Here’s why everyone in the Schafer-Spier family annoyed me:

Richard: Married for 35 books, 5 super specials, 7 mysteries, and a Logan spinoff, but gets butt hurt that his stepson doesn’t immediately respond to him finally deciding to have a relationship.

Sharon: Sooo passive and indulgent. She just seems so checked out of every kid’s life. This marriage is headed for divorce.

Richard and Sharon: They do absolutely no parenting of any of these kids whatsoever. There is zero effort to transition Jeff into a family where the parents met literally because now-stepsisters became friends. It’s all about them and how Richard needs Jeff to like him, how Sharon needs Jeff to accept the new family, and how the kids not liking each other ruins their delusional marriage and their vacation.

Mary Anne: It’s not even possible to describe how obnoxious and borderline creepy Mary Anne is in this book. It’s the fucking haircut.

Dawn: Dawn has become my least favorite sitter because she is just such a bitch all the time. Seriously, has Dawn not had a stick up her butt for like 30 books in a row now?! She has sooo many issues with the new family that she’s clearly deeply in denial about, because she’s constantly looking to pick fights with Mary Anne and Richard about everything.

Jeff: is the brattiest of the bratty kids in this series and gets away with everything. I cannot stand Jeff. He is such a spoiled little asshole that does whatever he wants and only gets rewarded for it.

This book was good and bad. The parts of it that I enjoyed were When the Barrett Dewitt Families went on a picnic but it was a disaster because that I think is very relatable. I also liked when the photographer came because it showed that the Shafer Spier Family has different tastes. I enjoyed some parts of their visit to Boston but some of the parts I felt like they were similar to other trips in the babysitters club books such as the San Francisco trip in Dawn’s book and the BSC in the USA trip. I didn’t like that everyone fought so much Because it made the book Kind of sad. I couldn’t believe that Richard, Maryann’s dad Suggested singing songs that doesn’t seem like him. I’m also not sure why Sharon was so against Tigger being in the picture I thought she Liked him. The title of the Book really described what went on unlike some other babysitters club books Such as Kristi and the worst kid ever. Overall this book was in the middle between good and bad

As a kid my best friends sister had the whole BSC series on a book shelf in her room. I thought she was so grown up. And I envied this bookshelf. And would often poke my head into that room just to look at it.
And when I read BSC, I felt like such a grown up.
And while I might have still been a little too young to understand some of the issues dealt with in these books, I do appreciated that Ann M. Martin tackled age appropriate issues, some being deeper than others, but still important.

I really don't enjoy the weird leveling that happens between Mary Anne and Dawn whenever they fight. Just about every time it happens, Dawn acts like a huge b and does some really messed up things (in this case, she and Jeff gang up on Mary Anne, insult her father to her face multiple times, including in front of Dawn's and Mary Anne's friends, and Dawn also sends postcards to all their friends trash talking Mary Anne and her dad). By the time Mary Anne does react more strongly, it's pretty understandable, but it's treated as if it's the same as what Dawn's been doing. And by the end, everyone makes up by basically just being like, yeah I guess we all did some things we regret. No! Jeff was being a brat, Dawn joined in, and Richard and Sharon did not parent. Ugh.

When I was 10 I joined a readers club/group where we got a new book every week. I chose The babysitters club.
The books are fantastic! So enjoyable. I loved getting the book every week. They are super quick reads and I was able to read it in one day.
Highly recommend for young teenagers to read or even younger if they are able too read well.

I loved touring Boston with the Schafers and Spiers, even if they were fighting the entire time. The poor BSC only got postcards about how bad of a time Dawn was having!

This book is about the important issue of family blending. The side story of the Barrett and DeWitt feud worked perfectly with the main storyline, though I wish Dawn and Mary Anne had made the connections between their feuds. The Barrett and DeWitt kids were acting out because they were afraid of the changes that were happening and because their parents were acting differently. Jeff does the same thing. I hope this book was able to help and can continue to help kids navigate the changes that the blending of families brings. I wish the parents in both situations had done more to help their kids out, instead of just being upset that they were acting out.

I never liked Jeff, he was such a brat. He's not even horrible the way Dawn his horrible, but seriously next level. I'm not sad that snotty child moved back to California for good, especially after this one. He needed a good old fashioned smack in the mouth.

I honestly don't know why I always loved this one so much, but re-reading it now was still so much fun. Mary Anne, Dawn and Jeff are so childish in this book, and somehow that made them seem more real to me. I definitely had stupid fights like this with friends when I was 13!

Dawn is seriously the worst in her past few books. What happened? She's always had a blind spot for how awful Jeff is but he is AWFUL in this book, and especially awful to Richard and his mom, and Dawn is too stubborn to acknowledge it until way too late.

And sure, Mary Anne is insufferable and I didn't like her much even as a child, but she has a reason to be a little sensitive about someone deliberately hurting her dad's feelings. Dawn's kind of a jerk for not seeing that.

All of that aside, I remember the DeWitts from childhood so it's wild that this is their first introduction. And now I want to take a trip to Boston.

This book was super duper boring because all they did was argue. They all started not to get along at page 5.
I didn’t even finished the book I just threw it across my room and started getting another book and then flop back to my bed.

Mary Anne, Dawn and Jeff are all so bratty in this book and negative. Richard was trying to keep the peace but dawn and jeff were treating him so badly. Maybe it’s a good thing she went back to California

Not a fan of the books where some of the girls spend the entire book fighting. It seems so out of character for them - considering how close they are otherwise.

This book does a great job tackling: merging families, family disagreements, and how most of the time family vacations with children are a disaster.

Realistic look at the challenges of blending a family. But boo on Sharon for not considering Tigger part of the family / worthy of being in the family portrait.

This book gets 1 star for Claudia's outfit below and 1 star for Mrs Barrett finally getting her "happily ever after". No stars for Dawn or Mary Anne or their entire plotline. But I guess I'll go over it anyway.

Jeff is coming to town to visit for a whole week and Dawn is understandably super excited. Mr Spier takes off for the whole week to spend it with Jeff and suggests they take a family roadtrip to either Washington DC or Boston at the end of the week. The first few days are great, everyone is getting along and they have lots of fun making fun of a silly alien movie and eating Mexican food. But then the girls have to go to school, Jeff is left alone with Mr Spier (Mrs Schafer has to work), and Jeff gets sulky when he's forced to clean up after himself and the Pike boys don't want to play soccer. Things go downhill from there. Mr Spier is boring (duh), Dawn & Mary Anne start bickering amongst themselves, "a crack was starting to form in [their] family".

Let's pause the misery for a What Claudia was Wearing, shall we! Today for instance she was dressed in black overalls that she had splattered with pink and green and yellow globs of paint. Her purple high top tennis shoes matched her purple long sleeve t-shirt. Claud has beautiful black shining hair that she'd fixed in a French braid. On top of her head perched a little white painter's cap that she'd also splattered with paint. She looked awesome. (She always does.)

Okay, back to the Spier-Schafer breakdown. They head out on their trip to Boston. Jeff pouts because he suddenly changes his mind and wants to go to DC. Mary Anne thinks Jeff is being a pest and hurting her dad's feelings, Dawn thinks Mary Anne is being a baby, none of the 3 kids want to do anything that the "other family" does. Including share a hotel room, go on the same sightseeing tours, and eat at the same restaurants. And for some reason, their parents go along with it, splitting up into their "original families". Like, what? No. This is a family vacation, you do things together, whether you like it or not. Also, Dawn and Mary Anne are 13 years old and old enough to baby-sit. Let them go off on their own and the parents can do what they want. Ugh. Anyway, the trip is a huge failure and they head home early.

Dawn's mom has scheduled a photographer to come and take a family picture before Jeff leaves and since they're all fighting still, it starts off awful. None of the kids are wearing their fancy clothes, the parents bicker over where to stage the photo, Mary Anne wants Tigger in the picture but he runs off, and everyone has angry faces. When they all see the test shots they realize how stupid they're all being and start laughing, breaking the tension finally. Everyone apologizes, retakes the pictures, and enjoys Jeff's last day there.

Alright, let's move on to the part that rated a star: Mrs Barrett finally getting her a decent man lol. You remember Mrs Barrett, right? The divorced mom of 3 who was kind of a wreck until Dawn helped her get her life turned around? Well she's finally found a good man and his name is Franklin DeWitt. The impossible 3 love Franklin, until they find out he has 4 kids of his own! Yikes. And they're all around the same age. Disaster in the making. The kids don't get along, the adults don't know how to handle it, and the baby-sitters save the day, as usual. Mrs Barrett makes her kids dress up for a fancy dinner, there's a disaster picnic in which a goat steals a sandwich, and lots of crying. Towards the end, the kids realize it's more fun to get along and play games together and it's all good. I do remember Mrs Barrett & Franklin getting married eventually, but not sure when. I'm sure there will be more drama before they do.
