On 1 May 3052, over twenty Galaxies from seven Clans clashed with twelve Armies of ComStar’s Com Guards. For twenty-one days, one of the largest campaigns in BattleMech warfare unfolded to decide the fate of the Inner Sphere.
The Battle of Tukayyid brings players back to this gargantuan conflict, allowing them to relive one of BattleTech’s most pivotal moments. It builds off of the Chaos Campaign: Succession Wars framework to unleash a massive experience players will enjoy across dozens of games. Each of the seven campaigns within includes the following: a short fiction entry and write-up of the battle, including a map of the regions; the specific Combatants involved, along with insignia; and details to allow players to play out each campaign on their tabletop. Finally, a technical readout section showcases ’Mech variants that first appeared during this conflict.
This Chaos Campaign puts you as the hero—Aidan Pryde, Anastatius Focht, and others—of the battle. Do you have what it takes to lead the Smoke Jaguars to victory, or will you repeat the failure of the Diamond Shark's? Or can you find a way to defeat the indomitable Clan Wolf? You will decide.
The Battle of Tukayyid is one of the most detailed events in the history of the BattleTech universe - between this book, the prior scenario pack, writeups of events on the planet in at least 4 sourcebooks, a short story collection, as well as being the focal point of two novels and having flashbacks or important moments in a bunch more... It's a well-worn part of the universe, but it's also one of the most pivotal events in the universe, with most of those books being published at the height of BattleTech's popularity, so it's a thing loads of people who might not play the game or read the books now, but haven't kept up with it.
So with that runaway kickstarter a few years ago, it made sense to do a new Tukayyid campaign book. Of course, like so many other things in the Kickstarter feature creep happened and it went from being a free PDF with a barebones campaign similar to the free Succession Wars one to being a full-size offering, and instead of a little print on demand booklet we get a full colour hardback with a full retail release.
The book opens as always with some short fiction, followed by a general introduction (the in-universe writing is by a member of the ilClan as the battle's bicentenary looms), then a repeat of the core chaos campaign rules and guidelines on how to apply them to the Tukayyid campaign overall, and then an expansion of the Battlefield Support rules from the BattleMech Manual to allow players to add simplified combat vehicles to their force. These rules are fast-moving and do a good job to balance the vehicles being dangerous but also more vulnerable than 'mechs.
These core rules are then followed by a section on each Clan that opens with a short story, a rundown of the events of their battles, a map of their Area of Operations, and then the specific tables and touchpoints for their campaign. The book closes out with a Technical Readout that features a number of Clan OmniMech configurations and ComGuard 'Mech variants and a few pages of colour 'mech art detailing colour schemes of various units in the battle. And then a big poster is glued into the back of the book with a map of Tukayyid on one side with zoom-in panels on the various battlefields, and the other side has a map of the Tukayyid system for Planetary Assault-scale games.
Overall this is a great campaign package. It's not as good as, say Total Chaos in terms of accessibility and scope, but it's right up there. It balances the vast, sprawling scale of Tukayyid against a tight, limited campaign format allowing players to create their own story on this world while not necessarily devoting a couple of years' worth of game sessions to it.
