The Mirror of Ecidyrue #1

Draco Malfoy and the Mirror of Ecidyrue

Rate this book
All it takes is one look in a mirror and an ill-advised attempt to shatter it, before an embittered Draco Malfoy fresh out of Azkaban is sent back into his body on the day he gets his Hogwarts letter.

Suddenly, Draco has an unwanted second chance, with a Sorting Hat that doesn't know what to do with him, a certain Muggleborn who won't leave his study table alone, and green eyes he just can't get out of his head. And then there's his new wand, whose choice of him could just mark him as every bit as dark a wizard as his name means he should be.

After the defeat of Voldemort, Draco accidentally gets transported back in time and into his eleven year old body. Now faced with reliving everything over again with the knowledge of what's going to happen. Except how does he make sure he doesn't mess up the outcome, or is it already altered.

This was such a fun read. Retelling the first book from Draco's perspective with a unique twist. Seeing how much Draco has changed since he started at Hogwarts, and how much he's struggling with his actions.

Draco begrudgingly becoming the fourth member of the trio was something I never new I needed.

Someone from post-war Hogwarts going back in time to their 11 year-old self and reliving their school years! I love the idea, 6/5, would read again (and again). It's my New Thing. And I think it's only really something you're likely to find in all its depth in fanfic, because normal media often doesn't have a clear canon that we all know very well to riff on.

Anyway. If you're like me and you're into this sort of thing, this fic is wonderful. Well-written, engaging, repeating the first year of school without feeling too repetitive, but hitting all the highlights while introducing us to new things.

18 year-old Draco Malfoy goes back to the Malfoy manor after his dad was sent to Azkaban and Draco and his mother were left off the hook by Harry's touching deposition in their favor at their trial, reminding me that I should really reread the series again because I forgot a lot of what happens in years 6 and 7. Anyway. My faulty memory notwithstanding, Draco has a grudge on Harry, and on the world, and he hates everything, and his morale is so low that the first thing he does is get utterly drunk.

While drunk, he comes across the mirror of Ecidyrue (reminding me I should reread some Greek mythology, but this is neither here, nor there), which he breaks in a fit. And he falls in, waking up as his eleven year-old self, in his old house, with his abusive father and his mother who does little to stop that.

Worse, he knows that, in order to defeat Voldemort, he should probably keep the past as it is, even if it means sacrificing people he cares about and, well, a part of himself. And he knows he's a coward and unimportant to anyone - or, rather, that's his feeling about it, but... unreliable narrator much?

This is pre-Draco/Harry slash, as far as I can tell from the tags (and from Draco's slight obsession/rivalry with Harry, although isn't that just canon?). Great stuff.

If you're into Harry Potter fanfic about people being sent to the past to relive the events in the books, although not really, complete with trauma from the war and darkness, but that's also well-written, I thoroughly recommend The Time Jump Chronicles by Transgressions, which is about a jaded Auror Harry Potter returning to his 11 year-old self and body - though that one is Harry/Snape.

"I'm useless and you know it. I'm no good at any of this heroic bit, I just freeze up. Potter needs you, so don't be stupid. It's the three of you. It's always going to be the three of you. So take my spot, call the play, and win the game. And if you stick around wasting time once it's won, I'll cheer from the afterlife when Quirrell drinks your blood. Well?"

Honestly I’m so in love with this fic that I need to put it on Amelia’s radar

Goddamn solid series. Author churns out words like its butter, and yet the quality and plot has been on point. One of the best fanfics I read this year, and the high word count means it will be quite a diverting time.

Draco is very disagreeable, and an unreliable narrator. Childish for being so old, and its perfect.

Draco Malfoy and the Mirror of Ecidyrue is a rewrite of the first Harry Potter book. Draco travels back in time after the war has ended and is forced to relive his first year at Hogwarts, but this time with all the knowledge of what's to come.

Time Travel ususally is not for me, but the way Draco is forced to face this second chance at life is very intruiging. It's funny at times (Draco's disdain for Hogwarts child-safety precautions and how he stands up to his parents), but also endearing and sorrowful (the regrets Draco has to his passiveness in the Second Wizarding War).

In no other work have I seen Severus Snape viewed through the eyes of the main character in such a kind and caring way. Also, the friendship between Draco and Hermione is to die for. The book has some mystery elements as well and I am keen to find out more about the magic mirror and Draco's Tallon wand in the next fic in this series.

2.5 ⭐

My first time reading a time travel where they don't try to rewrite the past.

An interesting idea and well written.

Draco is both himself and different.

I look forward to reading more.

3 estrellas 🌟🌟🌟

1. Seguir en el universo HP
2. Leer algo feliz, idealmente donde Wolfstar saliera bien parado

Así que sin pensarlo mucho más empecé con "The Mirror of Ecidyrue #1: Draco Malfoy and the Mirror of Ecidyrue" .
