Sebastian Darnell seeks vengeance, and he is adamant on destroying all of the Morrows once and for all. His advisors have a more daring goal in mind, one that relies upon pitting the Darnell siblings against each other to prove that Sebastian has the stronger claim. Hell yes I'm reviewing my own book. This one was so much work and it took me a lot longer than I would have liked, I was so afraid of having "second book syndrome" where it felt like things would drag, but...I can honestly say I'm so excited for you to experience the next step in this journey with me.

The pefect sequel, packed full of action and heart-wrenching moments.

Blood Of Queens ended with a bang and Heir Of Kings keeps that momentum going, wasting no time in picking up exactly where it left off and flinging you into the action (and the drama). This time, there are a lot more character POVs which really helped to further flesh out the world, showing you different perspectives from different areas and standpoints. I struggle to think of which character arc/POV I enjoyed the most - and while they don't all end as you might expect, I have to say each ending was extremely satisfying.

Everything that was put down and set up in the first book is executed perfectly in this sequel, and there were many moments that had me filled with glee and even more that sent my anxiety through the roof. In the end, everything is rolling toward the final conclusion and I am beyond excited (and nervous) to see where it takes us.

I was not prepared. This book was wilder than the first one. This book pick ups a few weeks after the first one ended and it ain’t slowing down. Were keeping the momentum with book two because it’s jam packed of emotion and action, making you feel very strong emotions (love and anger) towards some of the
characters.

A lot of times, a book with too many different POV’s can be overwhelming for me but she executed it FLAWLESSLY and it was exciting to learn about the world from other people’s POV’s from all over.

This book dives into the background of the world and the places within it, as well as the characters and the history of Basium.

This book was truly heartbreaking (which makes me both extremely nervous and excited or the third book lol) and was full of tension and shocking moments that left my jaw on the floor and tears in my eyes!!!

Maddie… I don’t know if my heart and emotions can handle much more. PLEASE be kind in book 3…

Heir of Kings is the exciting sequel to Blood of Queens and I found it just as thrilling as the first.

The additional POVs were great and I especially loved Bellona’s as she’s my favourite character, but also getting to know Lilith and Sebastian.

One of my favourite parts was exploring more of the continent in the various countries, Harith in particular. I’m very keen to read and learn more about the rebellion happening there.

It was also amazing to see more magic, such as with the Merciless Ones.

The ending had me on the edge of my seat with every twist, I really just felt like I needed someone to scream about it with!

Overall this was a great read and I cannot wait for the conclusion!

Oh god, what a book! What a ride! I honestly don't know what to say about this one😅 let me start with telling you that this one is even better than the first one.

This book picks up a few weeks after the end of the first one. And man this book has a lot of action and emotions. It makes you fall in love more with these characters, it makes you angry at a certain point.

In this book we get to know more of the characters and places in this world. And I love to get to know these other characters too. This book also gives you more insight of the history of Basium, which I want to learn more about!

And oh the tension in this book kept building up. I had predicted that this book would be heartbreaking and I was right! I was shocked multiple times and one part I still don't believe it's true (not going to say which one because I don't want to give spoilers!) Just be aware that when you start this serie, you are in for some heartbreaking!

I can't wait to read the next book in this trilogy and last but not least I want to thank the author for providing me with an ebook.

Maddie Jensen does it again with an incredible sequel! Heir of Kings starts off right where Blood of Queens left me wanting for more and throws you right into the action! This was a perfectly executed sequel that helped flesh out the world more and got you even more invested in the characters (which I didn’t think was possible!). I can’t wait for the next book

Brilliant sequel to her first book Blood of Queens, as always very well written with exciting storylines, interesting characters and just an all round great read. Highly recommend reading the Legacy of the Lost trilogy, and very excited for the next book!

Whew! Okay so I received this book as an ARC in exchange for an honest review, and honestly I'd do anything for my girl Maddie.

First things first, as with Blood of Queens, I absolutely adored the writing style. It's easy to read, wonderful on my brain, and isn't bogged down by purple prose or overly symbolic language which tends to make fantasy stories confusing and hard to decipher. It's easy to flip through and honestly I swept through the first third in an hour before having to put the book down because I had absorbed so much information and needed to process it haha.

Maddie does a really good job of plotting and keeping the sequence of events interesting and moving forward, which can be an issue, especially with sequels. The pacing in this has greatly improved since Blood of Queens, although I will be the first to admit that it tended to drag a little bit in the middle, although I'll get to that later in my review. Maddie is also excellent at conveying a great amount of information in a very short time. Within one chapter so much will happen and so much will need to be unpacked, there were moments I had to flip back and make sure I hadn't skipped a page or something.

Like my Blood of Queens review, I couldn't give it a full five stars purely because of some personal preference things, but they were pretty minor. The emotional moments were quick and I didn't feel like we as the reader truly got to settle into them and enjoy them as we could have. Particularly some moments in Theron and the twist at the very end. The other issue I had with it was that it did start to get bogged down around halfway through the book. This wasn't because of an excess of information, but rather the sheer amount of POVs we were given made it confusing at times to keep track of everything that was going on.

Vida's POV in particular was the hardest for me to get through but I think that's just because I dislike Vida as a character and not a reflection on the author or the writing as a whole.

But again, these are all minor issues that can be boiled down to a personal preference. I know plenty of people who adored the new POVs we got and who disagree with me on some of the points above. This was just MY review of the book.

I will say, another place where Maddie shines is in building character. Sebastian and Lillith were two characters I was mostly eh about, but by the end of this book I fell in love with them. So much so that I would have thrown this book against a wall if anything happened to Lillith (and I did when a PARTICULAR MOMENT RUINED MY LESBIAN MILF DREAMS) but anyway, Maddie's character work has increased tenfold since Blood of Queens and something else that I don't know was intentional but I adored, was that in some POVs like Bellona's or Sebastian's, you don't truly know what the person is thinking all the time. It's almost as if it's a limited POV but in their own head and I really enjoyed it.

Overall, this was a very solid sequel that suffered from some pretty par-for-the-course parts of second book syndrome, especially in the middle. But the plot is always moving forward, the characters are well-written and mysterious enough to keep your interest, and again, this is a great summer read like it's predecessor. It took me longer to read than Blood of Queens, but like I mentioned before, I read the first third in like an hour. I highly recommend it, especially if you're looking for something new that doesn't pull punches and won't hit you over the head with purple prose.

Desperation was a cruel mistress.
••
Heir of Kings is the second book in the Legacy of the Lost trilogy, the first book being Blood of Queens.!
••
After reading the first book in December last year, I really should’ve dived into the second book sooner.!! But also like damn, did Heir of Kings left me wanting more answers than book 1.!! It was a wild ride and I was all here for it.!!
••
Heir of Kings took everything from Blood of Queens and added additional depth to, be it the plot or the characters and the magic system as well.!! I completely enjoyed the flow of the story and was hooked from the start.!! The story picks up where it left off in book 1 and just ensues with all the politics and war and betrayal right off the go.!
••
Carissa was as badass as the first book & Jacen was a softie who needed to be protected at all costs.! But also how adorable was their baby omg.!!
••
Bellona also remains one of my most favorite character and I adored her even more in book two.!! Also the poly relationship was very well written.!
••
I couldn’t have hated Deacon more if I tried.. I literally wanted to go into the book and be off with him.! Especially after what he did to Jacen like I was TOTALLY NOT EXPECTING that.!! Like I still can not believe Jacen is dead okay? It was one of those moments where you just pause and need to process if you really read what you read.!
••
The ending was devastating, honestly the entire book was like one big WHAT THE HELL JUST HAPPENED moment.!! Like I just wanna ask the author how could you do this to us.!!!!!!
I cannot wait to read the conclusion but I’m also scared of it.. the third book can’t come sooner.!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

So I got this book as an ARC and was so excited to finally have my hands on the long and eagerly awaited sequel to Maddie’s Blood of Queens!

The writing style was spot on for me, and kept me intrigued throughout the whole novel. I will admit, having multiple points of views gets confusing for me at times, but I was able to love seamlessly between each character to have a clear understanding of what was going on.

It was good to see some further character development, and see more magic going on!!! (That’s what I’m here for hehe)

The twists and turns were unexpected and I cannot wait for the concluding novel next year!!

This is the second book in the legacy of the lost trilogy.
In the first book we had 2 POV's in this one there are a few more. But it's a good thing because there are a lot of things happening in different places so we need the extra pov's to get the full story and know what's going on where!
I have to say a lot of bombs are dropped that blew my mind! Things I did not see coming and I love it when I'm surprised like that!
In this book we get a lot of action but also a lot of heartbreaking things. Especially that last big one. I was shocked. I didn't want to believe it. I cursed 😅
I have no idea what will happen next but I'm very curious to see how things will go after everything that has happened.

Middle books in series sometimes struggle with either not having enough of a plot to stand on their own or becoming bogged down with seeming irrelevancies. Jensen has crafted a strong second book! The plot never faltered, with danger and betrayals throughout. New character POVs are explored and while sometimes I don’t like jumping from one character to another, Jensen also makes each characters motives and voice strong enough to be distinct (plus they are very clearly labeled in each chapter heading 😂). The final events of this novel definitely left me hanging and ready to pick up book three when it comes out!! 4.5/5

Such a good sequel!

Thank you again to Equality Book Tours for the opportunity to read and review this book for the tour.

Again, what a sequel. This book is such a good follow up to Blood of Queens. Carissa, as always, is such a badass and I loved her growth progression in this book. The multiple POVs were very clear and each voice was distinct- despite us hearing from 6 different characters. It was a very well-rounded look into the series.

Overall, such a win. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed both the first and second installment in this series and can’t wait for the third!

I'm so glad book 3 is coming out this year because after the rollercoaster of events and emotions in Heir of Kings I am beyond excited to see what comes next in the Legacy of the Lost trilogy!

Jensen has beautifully balanced various character perspectives, crafting a gorgeous tapestry of storytelling excellence. This sequel/middle book in the series does not disappoint. If you enjoyed Blood of Queens you absolutely must read Heir of Kings!

Oh my heart! One thing I love about reading this series is being able to really understand and follow each character. They’re all so well written, and fully fleshed out. Maddie Jensen has made me care about every single character whose POV is presented. The grief and joy expressed by each character, has me feeling everything right alongside them. This book has me in absolute agony and I am so anxious to find out what happens in the third!!

Loved this just as much of not more than Blood of Queens, much needed following BOQ, read that again so I could smoothly transition into Heir of Kings.
All my favourite things these books hold a high flag for; tension, strong females leads, and more tension haha.
Now how long do I have to wait for the final instalment, at least I will get to read BOQ and HOK again ❤️🔥🔥

This is book 2 in the Legacy of the Lost Series. I recommend reading in order as there is a timeline that must be followed in order to understand what is happening within the trilogy.

The story starts off several weeks after the heartbreaking ending in book 1. Let me tell you that I am not surprised that this book has taken hold. It is told In multiple POV's which I enjoy. There is also an aspect of the story where I feel that the numerous points of view help the overall plot with an understanding of where the other characters are coming from. This one has even more twists and turns than the last book that I was not expecting and it made me love the book even more. The emotional moments had me screaming and the surprising ones had me thinking..."WHAT IS GOING ON!"

If you love political intrigue and court politics with romance, betrayal. surprises and heartbreak, this book and series is for you. I give this book 5 stars.

I'm excited to share my review of Book 2 of the Legacy of the Lost Trilogy, Heir of Kings! It's an adult fantasy novel that continues the story of the Darnell siblings and the Morrows in their fight for the crown. There are tropes such as enemies to lovers, arranged marriage, found family, blood feuds, magical wars, etc.

I LOVED Heir of Kings! It's hard to make the sequel better than the first (especially for how good it was), but Jenson did an excellent job building upon the original story. Like the first novel, there were multiple POVs, which gave Game of Thrones vibes. Although there were many characters that the book followed, the ones with the most chapters were Carissa, Jacen, and Sebastian.

Once again, Carissa was a badass queen who put the needs of her people first and used the court skills she built up in the first book. I liked the realistic romantic plot between her and Jacen because although they love each other (but might not realize it yet), they have many obstacles that continue to try to put a distance between them. Seeing both POVs in their relationship puts more emphasis on how they each have understandable conflict from their standpoint and why they made the choices that they did. It added great complexity to the characters and their situations, which really brought depth to the story.

The LGBTQ+ representation was even better in Heir of Kings, as the book dives deeper into Bellona's romantic relationships. I loved how the book explored poly relationships in how Bellona didn't have to choose between her old and newly developing love. I mean, why choose?!

Aside from romance, there are many more action sequences now that the war has begun. So many scenes kept me on the edge of my seat! Finally, I liked Sebastian's character development, as he has to choose between his lifelong mentor and his long-lost sister.

"Sometimes... miracles and nightmares are one and the same."

O. M. G. Heir of Kings is definitely a wild ride I was not expecting.

If not familiar with the events that took place in book one, Heir of Kings picks up a couple of months after with new characters, new places, and even more gut clenching events.

I loved how the political play given the arranged marriage between Carissa and Jacen continued into book two, and it honestly became a little more frustrating because of Jacen's character. I sometimes wanted to slap him through the book to make up his mind, but I knew he had a part to play in this story. I also wanted to have a one on one conversation with Carissa because I felt she could've done more to try and use her magic against those harming her and to use it to fight for her people.

Honestly though, if there is somebody I hate with a passion in this series... it's Deacon. I really applaud Maddie for having me hate someone as much as I hate Deacon. Even in the first book, if it's one thing he has... it's audacity.

I really enjoyed the pacing of the book, although I did feel like it was a little slow at times with the details we were receiving. I am not a big fan of multiple POV's. I often struggle to catch up with what's going on and they can become confusing at times. However, I felt that Maddie executed this well enough that I could follow along throughout the book.

Ultimately, I gave this book 3 stars because I would've wished we could've seen some form of bigger development in the relationship between Carissa and Jacen. Although I did appreciate the different characters in this book and the information they provided, I felt that our initial main characters were not as "main" as they were in the first book. Either way, that ending had me screaming "WTF" and needing to take a couple breaks. I still enjoyed this read and look forward to what happens in the third book.

- Thank you Equality Book Tours and Maddie Jensen for allowing me to read and review this book.

Thank you to the author and Equality Book Tours for sending me the ARC to this fantasy with political intrigue, a war looming and an interesting magic system.

Carissa has been betrayed by the people she thought were her friends. She lost her last connection to her family but found out her presumed-dead brother was alive and vying for the throne.

Jacen doesn’t know what to choose and who to be loyal to. He has to pick a side- his father and uncle or his wife and child. He is struggling to figure out the lengths he could go to protect his family.

Sebastian seeks vengeance and his advisors keep fueling his hatred towards the Morrows. He must find out where he draws the line when it comes to what he would do to get the throne. He has to decide what he wants for his future.

After the way Book 1 ended, I dove straight into this book expecting fierce battles. But, I feel like the story lacked the power it held in the first book. The situation of each character was shaky and heart-wrenching. The book was filled with emotional moments that kept me turning the pages.

It felt like the MCs don’t have any role in the story. Carissa is supposed to be the most powerful of them all but she never tries to learn to control and wield it. But, she expects to fight and win against Deacon - who has been using his magic to overpower everyone for years.

Jacen had even little to do in this book. It was frustrating to watch them not make decisions or use their powers. There were so many nerve wracking moments that kept ending in the same way, the MCs losing. There were some satisfying moments that made the read interesting.

“Love was more than nice. It was heartbreaking and beautiful all at once. It was the most terrifying thing Jacen had experienced, in some ways more difficult than war.”

“Magic didn’t make someone a monster; their actions did.”

“Sometimes, Sebastian, miracles and nightmares are one and the same. I made my choice to protect our people, and I won’t be shamed for it.”

This is book 2 in the Legacy of the Lost trilogy and it brings even more heartbreak and strife for the characters we met in book 1. This book also has multiple POVs from key players in the story which made it very interesting. There’s a few storylines to follow which adds layers of complexity and interest. My favourite part of this book is the focus on the different female characters and how they show strength in different ways. I also liked how many of these women had such deep relationships with each other. Be warned though? This book will break your heart over and over, but I’m hopeful for a happier conclusion in book 3!

I rarely write reviews for much of anything, but this book drove me absolutely insane in the best way possible. I didn't think it would top the first one, but here we are! I'm usually skeptical about having so many different POVs in a story, but it was wonderfully done here and I was thoroughly invested in everyone's story. Lilith's arc was a particularly incredible one to me. I have so much love for these characters, and seeing their subtle but constant growth was a great experience.

I have yet to see someone comment on this, so I will: Deacon Morrow is one of the most fantastic villains I have seen in a while. Truly, I don't think I've ever hated a villain so much while also getting immensely hyped whenever he made an appearance— the drama he constantly brings to the table is just so good.

The finale made my jaw drop— unexpected but fitting, and had me so on edge I immediately purchased the next book. Absolutely cannot wait to see what book 3 has in store for me! Massive props to the author, haven't been this invested in a story for some time 🫶🏻

👑 @maddiejensenwriter has written a fantastic sequel to Blood of Queens! And I'm really looking forward to book 3!!!

👑 I loved the characters, the world and the trouble everyone got themselves into in book one so much! And that continues in Heir of Kings!

👑 There is even more betrayal, murder, heartbreak and battles. There's even some new romances introduced that I loved so much! There is bi representation from one of the FMCs too!

👑 There are multiple POVs, but each POV adds to the total story and you don't get bored at all!

👑 I'm feeling a bit heartbroken at the end of this one, there's just so much loss. But I'm always hopeful when it isn't the end of the series yet!

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Spice: 🫑

👑 The only thing I would have wanted more of was how information was traveling so fast and how certain elements/battles played out so quick too.

So much happens in this sequel novel that its almost impossible to pick a favourite moment. I'll admit that I'm not often a fantasy reader but Maddie Jensen has managed to develop established characters with new and exciting twists AND introduce us to some fascinating new people - while not making the reader feel overwhelmed by the changes in 'voices' throughout the book. It is amazing to see the growth in this author, with only a year in between books, she's quickly developing as a go to author for me and I can't wait to see what is around the corner!

Okay okay okay SO. What a terrific sequel! This was a complex but not convoluted novel, the next instalment in the journeys of some of our favourite characters.

Carissa and Jacen are my faves and to see how far they’ve come warms my heart! Deacon can go jump in the nearest lake.

This is a heart wrenching, heart stopping tale of love, loss, betrayal, sacrifice and the power of friendship.

(Also, where’s the next one?)

(Also, if anyone needs me, I’ll be recovering from that ending. That’s all).
