" Amor vincit omnia."

Series: The Warrior Daughters of Rivenloch #2
Publication Date: 11/17/20
Number of Pages: 416
** 3.5 Stars **

This book takes place at the same exact time as the first book in the series, Bride of Fire. I haven’t read that book, but I imagine that the opening scene in that book is likely the same as this one – but with the focus on a different heroine. I don’t feel that I was ‘left out’ because I didn’t read that first book – this one is totally standalone. Although, having read that book might have helped me to understand why a Highland Laird would want to move his clan to a lowland castle on the border with England.

Hallidis Cameliard is the future Laird of her clan – and she’s currently acting as Laird during her parent's absence. Hallidis’s clan has a long-standing claim against Creagor and was surprised when it was granted to the nephew of the last Laird at Creagor. While Hallidis’s parents were petitioning King Malcolm to grant Creagor to them, her cousin Jenefer snuck out via the secret entrance to lay siege (or something) to the newly arrived Laird Morgan Mor mac Giric whose uncle was the former Laird of Creagor. Hallidis and another cousin, Feiyan, left Rivenloch to stop Jenefer and return her home. Except – all three of them end up captured. Hallidis manages to escape and also manages to capture a prisoner to use to bargain with Morgan Mor mac Giric to get her cousins released. That prisoner turns out to be Morgan’s right-hand-man, Colban an Curaidh – which means Colban the Champion.

During his ‘imprisonment’ (which consisted of being held in the Lairds chamber), Colban soon endeared himself to Hallidis’s three brothers and her sister Isobel. Her siblings took great delight in thwarting Hallidis’s plans to treat Colban as an enemy prisoner. Of course, he soon endears himself to Hallidis as well. They come to love each other and commit to marriage. Then, the unthinkable happens and she ends up having to marry another. How can they ever get to a HEA with her married to someone who is not The One? There are lots of twists and turns before they ever make it.

I went into this book thinking it was going to be filled with action – LOTS of sword fights, sieges, and battles – I mean – the series is WARRIOR Daughters of Rivenloch, so you’d expect lots of ‘warrior-ing’ and I didn’t see as much of that as I’d expected. The first 65-70% was much slower paced than I expected, so I found myself putting it down frequently and not being in any hurry to pick it back up. The book picked up after the 60% or so mark and I enjoyed it much better. It was well written, just, to me, overall, slower-moving than I expected. However, what really got me – and it isn’t mentioned anywhere in the book blurb – is that there is a serious, active, sexual deviant in the story – in a pivotal role. It doesn’t matter to me if he got his punishment or not – his proclivities had too much page time for my taste – at least his activities did. A mention of his ‘ways’ would have been sufficient; I didn’t need to see them all in print. I was happy to have met Hallidis and Colban – and I LOVED Ian, Isobel, Brand, and Gellir.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

If I could give this more stars I would. This story happens at the same time as the events in book one, "Bride of Fire". Hallie of Rivenloch is cousin to Jenefer in book one. Hallie and her cousins, Jenefer and Feiyan are all warrior's. Train by their warrior mothers they all know how to use a number of weapons and usually best most men in a fight. Hallie has been trained to be the Laird after her mother. She is loyal to her clan, honest, strong and beautiful. Most think she has a heart of Ice as she does not believe in love. But she has know all her life that a husband will be picked for her due to her place in the clan. When her cousin Jenefer and Feiyan are taken captive by the soon to be new Laid Morgan Mor Mac Girics at Creagor. She takes his first hand man and best friend Colban Curaidh captive to use as leverage to get them back. Little does she know just what she has done.
Colban is a champion, he is loyal, strong, wise, handsome as the devil and determined to help his clan.
This book is so fast paced once you get started you can't put it down. There is so much going on. Both sides want to claim Creagor. There is all of Hallie's siblings that help make the story.
Her younger sister Isabel is a romantic, brothers Brand and Gellin both want to be warriors and are learning. But her youngest brother Ian is without a doubt the one you will fall in love with.
With the fighting, holding the clan in order till her parents get back, the growing attraction between the two there are so many twists and turns. The ending will have you upset, mad, glad and shocked how it ends. I sure hope you get a copy. This series is not to be missed. Could be some of the best books of the year.
I receive an ARC from the author and want to thank her. I am giving my honest opinion voluntarily .

When Hallidis Cameliard’s reckless cousin decides to challenge command of the neighboring Creagor all by herself while her parents are away, Hallie and her other cousin Feiyan attempt a diplomatic solution which quickly goes awry. Now faced with both cousins being held hostage, Hallie finds herself in a position to take a counter hostage, Colban an Curaidh (Colban the Champion). The situation quickly spirals out of control as Colban endears himself to Hallie’s sister and brothers, and finally, to Hallie herself. But circumstances thrust on her family by a young king threaten all of their futures. There are enough twists and turns and surprises in this book to keep you riveted right to the satisfying end. Ms. Campbell manages to thread that fine line between a book which can be read as a standalone, and a book that continues with themes and characters from the other “Ravenloch” stories. I highly recommend this book along with the rest of the Rivenloch series. You won’t be disappointed! I received a free review copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Bride of Ice by Glynnis Cambell is a kick ass tale of medieval proportions. Who doesn’t love a beautiful warrior woman who can best most men? This 2nd book in the Warrior Daughters of Rivenloch series picks up with scenes that parallel book 1 and catapults the reader into Hallie of Rivenloch’s enchanted life. As the daughter of the Laird, Hallie prepares to lead her clan, but is shocked to find a worthy opponent for her affections in a braw Highlander foe. The vivid characters and remarkably clever, page-gripping plots, made this a fast paced read that I had trouble putting down. Glynnis weaves family dynamics, murder, romance, and an awesome cast of characters into a tale that just won’t quit. I loved every minute of it!

Bride of Ice is an epic love story a beautiful strong female protagonist. I mean let’s face it, who doesn’t like a strong woman character that can best all the males?

Second book of the Warrior Daughters of Rivenloch Series, the book continues on with some of the characters of the first book, Bride of Fire.

This book is fast paced and there is a lot going on, including some deviant characters that you don’t normally find in the medieval stories (at least the ones I’ve read so far. Easy to read book and very entertaining

Daughter's raised to be warriors like their mothers, Hallidis is in charge, but when she is faced with the problem of her cousins not following orders, she feels some doubt about her abilities until she overcomes those and captures the man she thinks is the right hand of the highlander who is claiming her cousin's castle. Let the games begin!
She has no intention of getting close to the man, but it seems like every one of her siblings are determined to be best friends with the man.
A tale woven in a way that grabs you on the first page and won't let you go until you read the last word.

Just when I thought I'd read the best Glynnis Campbell has to offer, Bride of Ice came along and grabbed me by heart.  She eased into the story like a broth slowly simmering, readying for a satisfying stew. Characters were added like fine seasonings. The storyline grabbed me like the aroma wafting through the kitchen as it came to a full boil and I found myself finishing the book with my cat sleeping on one side of me, my husband softly snoring on the other, and the alarm clock reading 2 am.  (Totally worth all the coffee I need to stay awake today!)

This is a story filled with intrigue and danger. Hallidis is a warrior. She is strong and determined to do her duty to the clan. Colban is loyal and fierce. You will enjoy the dialogue as they try to one up each other. The characters of her young siblings also bring a delightful flair to the story. It is filled with multiple heroes and heroines. There is also many humorous situations to lighten the mood as they race towards their happy ending.

Colban, a chivalrous knight melts the heart of Hallie, a cold-blooded warrior maid, with actions of heroism, honour and self-sacrifice. I was hooked on this mesmerising, full of action story with twists and turns, sizzling-hot passion and breath-taking scenes. I liked the fact that she kept pushing him away, but her siblings kept bringing him to her... I enjoyed so much this story, it was a such delight to read!

Destiny

Hallie and Colban were ment to be even if everything seemed to be against them. Enemy clans who were looking to keep a castle and use hostages as leverage. Now throw in those pesky English and there are cliffhangers galore.

Great

I really enjoyed this story. It was very entertaining with the antics going with the children. Colgan really wasn't a true hostage because came to visit him. Love does conquer all.

Brawn and Beauty

This story shows how Rivenloch motto is true, love does conquer all. She is a warrior in her own right destined to one day be Laird. He’s bastard and second to his Laird. Their honor and loyalty to their clans come before all else.

I rated the book 2 points. The first and third books in the series do not deserve more than 1 point, but this part received a point only for the adequate main characters, especially Hallie, since her sisters are absolutely inadequate youngsters. I think this is the worst author of the historical genre that I have read, but it can be called historical with a huge stretch, since the author writes completely modern things.
So, according to the plot, it happens parallel to the events of the first part. While the naive fool Jennifer expects that now a whole army will come to save her and take over the castle for her, her sister returned home to her most mundane tasks - managing the castle, training, controlling her brothers and sisters and along the way she took Morgan's right hand with her. But if the reader expects that this will be a harsh captivity, then he will be disappointed - he was received as the most honored guest, allocated the best chambers, fed like a king and entertained by the whole family - here we see performances, and bathing in the bathtub personally by the mistress of the castle and etc. But the stupidest thing in all of this is that he imagined that such an empty place like him - a bastard without a name and family - could be a worthy husband to the daughter of the clan leader, and she put on rose-colored glasses with thick glass and immediately strengthened this marriage (well, you know what I mean I). But okay, as always, both heroes are simply divinely beautiful and cannot resist each other. Then there is the battle already familiar to us from the first part, well, there is no way for the author to end everything with a happy ending by showing the hero as an irreplaceable warrior who saved Hallie herself or her mother, otherwise at home he gave them an ostentatious demonstration of his power by defeating her warriors, but in a real battle he did not stood up against 3 Englishmen and Halia saved his life. So the author decided to drag out the plot by weaving in a fagot and pedophile husband, an outcast hero and a stupid knightly tournament, but why all that? To find a husband for my third cousin? I think something better could have been invented there. And so the ending came out too hasty - it was so easy for a rootless warrior to be allowed to become the husband of the lord’s heiress.

Hallidis “Hallie” Cameliard can’t believe it her cousin Jenefer has been captured by the enemy at Creagor. Hallie is acting laird of Rivenloch while her parents are away must go and save Jenefer. When Hallie gets to Creagor instead of trying to make peace is apprehended herself. Hallie must find a way to escape and is able to taking Colban an Curaidh as a hostage. Hallie takes him back to Rivenloch intended to treat him well but with cold indifference and disregard. Colban manages to worm his way into everyone’s heart. Hallie’s siblings love him, the Rivenloch clan accepts him and Colban realizes the affection he has for Hallie has grown into love. Even though Colban is a hostage he enjoys the he spends with everyone including even though she is known as the ice queen. Still, Colban can’t resist Hallie and nor can she deny the strong feelings that are slowly growing towards him. There are many obstacles to both of them being together family, king, country, being enemies will all come to a head leading to either war or love.
What an amazingly wonderful Scottish historical told brilliantly! This might be the second book in the Warrior Daughters of Rivenloch series the story gives enough background without getting lost or confused. Ms. Glynnis Campbell just knows how to tell an engaging tale that never slows down in action or adventure keeping us in a state of suspense. The characters are very real and the places brim with life that it isn’t hard to imagine any of it. Hallie the aloof haughty heroine at first seems unfeeling and cruel but as the book progresses she is hard to resist. While Colban is just instantly swoon-worthy and makes a great book boyfriend; he’s loyal, honorable and chivalrous what’s not to like? There are a few confusing moments but really this is a excellent book that is well worth the read!

I enjoyed book 1 in this series enough that I couldn’t wait to see what had happened simultaneously with Hallie and Colban.

The book started out well. The author treaded carefully by explaining the overlapping events just enough to move the story along without completely repeating the first few chapters of book 1. Getting to know Hallie’s younger siblings was a high point of this book. Colban and Hallie’s chemistry as a couple felt more natural than Morgan and Jenefer’s. If anything, the relationship felt almost too slow to develop despite only covering what was intended to be a week of time.

The place it really fell apart was the introduction of the book’s “villain.” While book 1 had a villain that took us by surprise just when we thought Morgan and Jenefer were on the path to happiness, anyone that read book 1 knew what got in the way for Hallie and Colban. Unfortunately the author fell back on horrible stereotypes of male weakness being tied to effeminate behavior and the sexual abuse of young boys. As soon as the author introduced us to Archie’s “type” I knew exactly where she was going with the plot. This alone would have been disappointing enough, if there wasn’t such a strong parallel to book one. Both story’s lovers were kept apart by the presence of a legal spouse that just happened to be so evil they hastened their own death, conveniently opening the door to our HEA.

Wow just wow what a great read. I have enjoyed this series each book is amazing. Hallie the in to be the laird of Riverloch and her cousin Feiyan have to go after her cousin Jenefer who went to the keep she had hope to become the Laird of. Creagor the castle adjoining Riverloch. That Hallies parents had gone to athe king of Scotland to petition for. Hallie and her cousin end up he captured by Laird Morgan Mor ma Giris. Hallie escape but is followed by Colban an Curaidh. When Hallie is surrounded by wolfs colban feels he must step in and save her unbeknown to him Hallie was not in danger but when Colban tells Hallie to climb the tree by her she does because she doesn’t want the wolfs to mane him. They spend the night in the trees Hallie wakes up and seized the opportunity to seize the upper hand. She takes Colban prisoner as a hostage to use to get her cousin back. From Laird Morgan Mor ma Giris. When they return to Riverloch both are drawn to each other but can they come together and they work this out for the best for everyone involved. I guess you’ll have to read the book to find out. An amazing storyline and characters that are engaging and captivating. Can’t wait to read the next book in this series.

This was a book I found hard to put down. It had me laughing out loud, which is not something that usually happens and then it had me feeling distraught by the things that the characters had to endure. This is the second in the series and although it can be read as a stand-alone, it is much better having read the first one. Ms Campbell knows how to draw you in and hold you with the emotion she written into the characters. The storyline was well written and flowed without a lot of fillers. There was a bit of everything, humour, action, mystery, suspense and sadness. It was a real emotional rollercoaster but still a very enjoyable read.. There are parts that some may find disturbing but they were written with sensitivity. There was some sex and this reviewer skipped it as usual and it didn’t affect my enjoyment of the book. This is the only reason why I didn’t give it a 5* I received this book as an ARC and freely do my review. I now wait for the next one.

Bride of Ice, by Glynnis Campbell is a must read. The romance that takes place between Hallie and Colban was so cute. I loved the humor that transpires between the two. This intrigued me even more to read the book. The romance was a so slow build between the two, but once the two finally recognized their feelings for one another the passion then takes over. Like I said the The book brought humor. Bits of witty banter among all the characters. I found that quite refreshing. The humor I feel played a good part in helping the book move along. I enjoyed all the different characters who played their own parts in helping Colban and Hallie see their stubbornness ways. The action was terrific. I enjoyed reading that the young ladies didn’t wait for a hero to come save them. They took care of matters their self. The females showed intelligence, ingenuity, problem solvers and they showed that they can be leaders. I enjoyed the fact that the book was an easy read, The writer didn’t add information that had no pretense to the story. She stayed to the plot and focused on making the book entertaining to read, I recommend this book. I voluntary reviewed this ARC after receiving a free gifted copy.

Wonderful story!

The storyline began with repeating the storyline of the previous book in this series, but once past that, it pulled me in. Loved the idea of strong warrior woman who underneath it all had caring hearts who would protect and do whatever it takes for their family and clan. Their motto; Love conquers all!

Bride of Ice is the second book in this series. I absolutely loved this tale of warriors who love as hard as they fight. Halli and Colban are amazing characters. Such depth is hard to achieve. I laughed and cried. I cannot wait to read the third book. The first two are brilliant!
