Time’s up class-holes. Checkmate. — KING is a full-length 85,000-word new adult/high school bully romance novel with mature themes. This enemies-to-lovers romance is recommended for readers over 18. This is NOT a standalone but if you’re a fan of alpha possessive bad boys, this book is for you!
L.J. Woods is an author of young adult and new adult contemporary dark romance. Her deliciously dark novels feature fierce heroines and irresistible bad boy anti-heroes that can’t get enough of them. With a thing for themes like enemies-to-lovers, bullying and suspense, Books by Woods will leave you gripping to your Kindle.
Woods is a Bi-Bipoc with a passion for travel, bourbon and new experiences. While she's anglophone, she calls both Montreal and Paris home.
This is the first book to be read by the author L.J. Woods. I don't know where to begin. First you really don't know who is telling the story until about the third chapter. Second Jo in my opinion was a disappointment pretty the whole book. She probably had about two moments where she stood tall and strong, but the rest was sad. Like she fought harder against the Lea( who was another bully) than she did Damien and Damien by his actions and words did the most damage. Then in one moment when she is alone with him she forgets everyone, everything and falls into the lusts. Then she mad because he goes back to ignoring her? Then jo has the audacity to get angry at her best friend who didn't reveal that one of kings is her twin brother, but yet she never told the whole truth about her past and she kept going back to Damien!!! Then what really took the cake was she started going back to her old habits and selling drugs. Now you want a better life for you and your sister, but yet you sell for Damien and his friends? What sense did that make? I don't about this but I do want to find out what happens next so let's see
Boring h, boring plot, and annoying slow burn. This is also one of those vague books where the author doesn’t bother describing what the h actually look like, (is she plain, beautiful, chubby, etc),or she just skims it as if it’s not important or made it too vague. The H called her a Gwen Stefani look alike( gwen has straight blonde hair), but the h has curly brown hair like her sis, so what the fuck does that mean… too much in this book made no sense.
What a pleasant surprise to discover a new bully romance a little different from the norm. Having read a great number of bully romances, I have to say this one had some elements I had not come across in other books. While for my tastes it was not dark, maybe I could concede mildly dark due to some themes others may be sensitive to, it had a grittiness that underscored the entire story as well as my favorite: an antihero.
In this tale, Joelle -- that's Jo (she will tell you) -- arrives to the wealthy town of Eden with her sister from the Groves, "the wrong side of the tracks," after the recent (mysterious?) death of her parents. They are taken into foster care as ethnic charity cases and enrolled in the prestigious and elite high school academy. There, Jo re-encounters (recall the donut order?) Damien and meets his crew; the queen bee and her entourage; as well as the rest of the school's bullies and passive teachers.
In this story, the bullying is pretty devious. Damien is literally king, heralding, permitting, other students to participate in her bullying. As is typical of this genre, the antihero, Damien, and heroine, Jo, are attracted to each other, Damien taunting Jo with advances and innuendos. The plot line hints at secrets, and combined with its grittiness, kept me captivated the entire book. Even the adults have ulterior motives, manifested in their awful behavior. LoL. Though Damien is the young king of the town, he has his familial demons too, another mystery which just scratches the surface of discoveries in this tale, beckoning the reader to stay on top of the story.
Generally character development was good but descriptions were fairly vague. It was apparent though that Damien was wildly attractive with his peculiar eyes, one grey eye and one blue one; Jo was mainly described by her curly hair. It was also obvious to me and I was happy to intuit that the heroine was POC -- there were nuggets of clues in the story. A plethora of physically fit and attractive men attending Eden Elite, I appreciated the diversity of the characters, POC, Latino, Asian, and sexuality, both men and women. Out of left field, however, overabundant descriptions about characters' breaths, to the point of distraction.
Damien was the epitome of alpha, dominant male. I got a kick of out Damien’s covert displays of jealousy and his claiming of Jo, as well as those "unexplained" injuries to other men who showed interest in her. Jo was a strong, likable and fairly confident heroine who made occasional mistakes. The chemistry and sexual tension between these two characters were tangible. The steam level was portrayed at times high and at others fade to black, the latter feeling like a short cut and not as fitting in my opinion with the storyline. These invisible love scenes would have made the relationship, their attraction and connection stronger, had they been enacted. Love scenes started at about 50% into the book. How about that kink the author introduced? Rather unique and creative, and not something I've come across in most bully romances.
Great variety of scenes whether school classrooms, locker rooms, gyms, parties, houses, riding in luxury vehicles / supercars, or around the city, even in the Grove. I got great visuals on the characters’ settings.
Nice pace I would classify as medium burn with some occasional slower burn parts. My preference is for a faster pace over descriptive, long scenes. This book had a few of those instances.
An entertaining and intriguing read. I am looking forward to book 2 and uncovering some the secrets hinted at in book 1. (4-4.5 rounding to 4 stars for now)
Look this book ain’t it. Well, that was an idea, but the execution was poorly ill-proven. I do not even know what was worse, that these were teenagers or that it is a scam of a movie/ show for teenagers on the channel CW.
I will begin by emphasizing the extent to which the romance was terrible. Take Joelle for example, she says she's a fighter yet her reels inside for a guy who has no charisma at all. Her example of attraction to him was utterly forced.
Damien was mean, but bloody hell, why. Being rich doesn't mean you're supposed to be mean just because. Ugh! I like a good enemy of trope lovers, but only when done right. This one was flat and precipitous. It wasn't a well-built story.
For a second they hated each other and the next Joelle couldn't help but think how hot Damien is. And, the amount of time Joelle spent pondering if she needs to be at that school or not would make you pull your hair out and scream in the room like a maniac.
Okay, I'm through with this. I tried to give myself time to read this book, but I can't get through it. I don't have any sympathy for the heroine, she's missing a solid bone. Her inner monologue is absolutely boring and the pacing of the book is totally off.
I'm not a big fan of bullying, but I put up with it if it's done right. Meaning, if it’s written stellar and it makes sense, I’m here for it.
I tried real hard! But, this is NO for me, though. There is no growth, no substance, just unnecessary intimidation to build a conspiracy that is shallow.
I don't even know why I bother reading this in the first place, but I knew that after reading page after page of insane bullying, I couldn't take it anymore. Not surprisingly, this book missed the mark!
Jo and her little sister Have been in foster care for seven years when they end up in Eden Falls as foster children to a very well off couple looking to make an impression on the community. Before she even ends up in the foster home she meets Damien and things get a little insane from there.
This book is not dark in the sense of some other books that I’ve read but it’s definitely darker than some of the bully books I have read and I have read many bully books. Def triggers quite a few.
Damien is not a good person in any sense of the word I actually find myself torn usually I love or like at least the guy but Damien is definitely a tough one. He literally repeats the same line to Jo So many times it gets annoying we get it you want her to leave.
Jo is also very tough because she makes endless amount of stupid decisions for someone who’s been in foster care and have dealt with unsavory people I find that she does not have a pulse on who to trust and who not to trust the people that treat her the worst she seems to forgive easily and the people who treat her kindly or try to help her she has a lot of anger and animosity towards. Instead of just keeping your head down and getting through school she makes so many decisions that not only affect her but affect the one person she said she loves the most her little sister. At one point she gives herself credit for teaching her little sister so much when in fact her sister seems way more mature than she is and make better decisions..
She is very addicted I think infatuation may not be a strong enough of a word to describe what she feels for Damien and it leads her to fall into his trap repeatedly. I did find out they had great chemistry and that part is definitely great the steam is not very high I would say it’s like a medium steam .
In regards to side characters I really like Christian and I feel like he may have feelings for Jo I also like the two friends that she makes and her sister is sweet.
Before I begin my review for King (Elite Royal Academy book one) by L.J Woods, I would personally like to thank the author, the publishers and Booksprout the opportunity to read this ARC and I have reviewed it honestly.
Step into an intense world of mean girls, domineering boys, drugs, scandals and sex, as Jo attends an elite school for the rich. King is a dark and consuming new adult, bully romance that may contain scenes that upset some readers.
King features, but is not limited to, the following themes: ○ NA romance ○ Bully romance ○ Bullying ○ Drugs ○ Foster kids ○ Posh high school ○ Tough FMC
My overall rating for King is…
5 Stars!
This book was insane! Extremely dark, like, I can't say I;m not tormented by this tale. There are definite trigger warnings for fierce bullying, sexual harassment, explicit sex scenes and drug use, but if you can handle the heat I say READ IT! I loved the deliciously detailed smutty scenes, the fierce female main character and the brutal bullying boy. The writing style was appealing and the scandals, secrets and drama were unbearable. Overall, I'm super impressed with this book and can't wait to continue Jo and Damiens story.
Oh my gosh!!! Hold on tight, this book took me on a wild ride! I couldn’t put this out down. And that ending! Oh. My. Gosh!!! We will get to that, first. Let’s talk about how much I loved Damien and Jo. I couldn’t figure out Damien’s angle. Does he love Jo, does he not, but it made the story so entertaining.
This book was amazing! I am so excited to read other books by L.J. Woods, I highly recommend if you love bully romances this is an awesome book to check out!
I liked the story but can’t get over the similarities of the cover, title of the book and name of the series with Rina Kent’s Royal Elite series published back in 2019. It’s a shame because both the characters and storylines are different but I couldn’t get over this, disappointing really.

This would be your typical bullying high school romance were it not for the myriad of criminal and dysfunctional acts by the main characters...bullying is the least of it, there's drug sales and usage and murder and cheating on and on and on. Some of these things could have been omitted so that the protagonists could have interacted more. Selling and using drugs and assaulting people also diminished the character of the heroine. Jo'a claim to want to do well so that she could get custody of her sister after graduation was jeopardized when she started selling drugs. Jo also seamed weak and sappy where Damien was concerned. Despite the cruel things Damien did, Jo constantly day dreamed about his body and having him sexually. Her anger for Lea seemed to be laced with jealousy. The author describes places and things to exhaustion but the heroine's physicality is vague ie, she's a couple of shades lighter than Morgan Freeman, she's five foot eight but Damien is 2 feet taller than she is-really, he's almost 8 feet tall. I like the diversity of the cast of characters...Blacks, Whites, Asians and Latin males and females. I was looking forward to reading a bullying story featuring a black female heroine but this was
Let me start off with, this series is not talked about enough. This is the first book of the Elite Royal Academy series. This was the slow burn of all slow burns! Joelle just wants to graduate so when she turns 18 she can become guardian of her little sister. Starting in a new foster family , and enrolling in an elite academy, she isn’t looking for trouble, she just wants to get through her senior year . But Damien King has different plans. He tries making her life miserable by humiliating her daily. Yet he can’t seem to stay away from her. He shows up at her job. He’s always turning up at school. Eventually barriers break. Sparks fly. Flames explode . That’s Damien and Joelle. Destruction. Book 1 ends in a cliffhanger . I’m already on to book 2. 5 🌶 ⭐️!

King is the first book that I have read by L.J. Woods and it didn't disappoint. This is an enemies-to-lovers story with angst, bullying and social class discrimination. Jolene has just moved to Eden with her sister Willow to live with a new foster family, except the town of Eden is very different from the projects of The Grove. Where The Grove has crime and street thugs, Eden is all fancy buildings and rich people in their designer clothes and expensive cars. Jolene just wants to graduate high school so that the minute she turns 18, she can leave Eden and lawfully take her sister into her care, but it's a little difficult when all the snobby rich kids at her school keep taunting her, trying to get her to leave town. And at the center of her problems is Damien King. The town's rich boy who is adament in his efforts to get her to leave. Or so she thinks. Jolene is tired of being treated like crap and growing up in The Grove has taught her to never bow down to anyone, not even Damien King. They say there is a fine line between love and hate, and although they both seem to hate each other, their bodies can't comprehend that message. This story was really good. There was alot of bullying involved, drama and mystery and the ending left us with a cliffhanger.
Seems like most high school bully romances are all pretty similar...
Broody rich guy with mommy/daddy issues blames the snarky girl from the wrong side of the tracks for his problems.
This book stayed on course with that; however, there were some twists.
I hope to get more insight into Damien in the future books because I can’t decide if he’s being authentic and genuine. He went from hating her to being all over her with not much context to what’s changed other than him basically saying he thought wrong.
Jo’s a strong girl who fights back. I’m looking forward to see what she does in the next books because right now she has this “huh” aura about her.
Damien and Jo had some 🔥 scenes.
Lots of unanswered questions that will keep me going onto the next book.
I don't know what to say after reading it. I gave it 3 stars. The beginning of the story is fun, interesting, and I like Jo and Damian. By the middle of the story, I think this is a high level for a bully novel.
The following content contains spoilers.
I think Damian will take Jo Going the right way, but I was wrong. He persuaded her to sell drugs, and he knew Jo needed the money. I love how Damian protects Jo. But it doesn't make me feel good about the character Damian. The last part ends like a CliffHanger. I'm not sure if I should continue reading. It doesn't feel right. Anyway, I believe Damian Care jo. But there is some secret between Damian and Lea. I don't like that Damian. Let Lea Bulli Joe I think Damian should protect Jo more.
DNF. Why? “Don’t you dare walk out on me Medusa. I know you’re a slut, might as well sleep with the King.”
Oh, heck no. Those words after both are described as too drunk to walk straight? Not sexy. Not cool. And Jo might as well plaster on a big red “A” if she takes him up on the offer.
Her sister Willow is the cool kid, smoothly integrating with the in-crowd, quiet yet follows social media, yet sometimes abets Jo when she rebels. I like her.
This story ticked some of the right boxes: ° Possessive male ° Single POV ° Angsty and emotional ° Underdog main character ° Good writing style
But… Dealing drugs? Bondage? Not so much. Smoking and drinking. Wait, my mom died from that. Eww.
Is it possible to survive your parents death? Not really. Jo and her sister are thrust into a new town with the rich and elite. She has an alpha boy who has set his sights on her, and she becomes a target. She's bullied, threatened and every attempt is made to get rid of her.
This is a dark bully romance with secretive, backstabbing adults and their children are the same. There are three alpha hockey playing males, a misunderstood best friend, and a broken girl. Of course, there is some spice and wtf moments. I liked this book and cannot wait to see what comes next. Yes, there is a cliffhanger, and this is the first in a series.
Now this is what I call a proper Bully Romance!! The story doesn't pull any punches.....just loved everything about it and there is so many secrets that are hinted at but not revealed...i'm still wondering who is actually on Jo's side and who isn't? Love the mystery and twists in the plot...I literally cannot wait for the next book!! Highly recommend for anyone who likes a darker romance with a plot that will keep you guessing!

Wow, was this book ever intense. There are so many twists and turns that you don't really know who is actually friend or foe. And parts of this book are pretty dark. There is something between Jo and Damien, but I guess we will have to wait to see what will happen in the end. This book was entertaining, exciting and keeps you on your toes.
I rate this book 4.5 stars.

This story was well written and very enjoyable to read. The author hit the nail on it’s head with the perfect blend of angst and intrigue. Should I like him or not? Is he up to something more than it seems or is there even more going on? I enjoyed finding out as the scenes revealed more surprising moments.

Going into this I really didn't expect to be this emotional about a book! Wow! L.J. is making me feel so much! So this genre is new to me, but after this I'm hooked. And an emotional mess, in the best way possible. I haven't felt this strongly about book characters in a whiiile. These are written so good, as is the whole story! Lots of twists and turns and at first unexpected steam. I can't wait for more!
Another book with potential where the execution was poorly done. The series reminded me of something like I have read it before, or seen before.. eh whatever. Noone was relatable, the teens were making the adults do their bidding, they weren't bullies they were just straight assholes that didn't know when to quit. The author tried portraying the heroine as someone strong, yet she was weak, her fighting consisted of slaps, and she was just as boring as you can imagine.
Addictive! This book hooked me from the first page! This is the first book I've read by author L J Woods but I will be reading more in the future. This book was captivating. Damien King and Joelle Rowland were a perfect match-up. Kudos to Woods on this original high school bully story that ends on a cliffhanger. I can hardly wait for the next book in this series!
I found this book on tiktok... One blurb got me... I couldn't stop thinking of this book just based of the blurb... So I stopped the book I was reading to read this book... I was not disappointed at all... I love how Jo doesn't cower to her bullies, I wish I had her backbone! Can't help but hate and love Damien at the same time! That ending though.... I'm on to book 2!
So far I am really enjoying this story. I can't wait to see what happens next. I hate spoilers so I won't tell what happens. However, I will tell you the characters are interesting, there's something wonky going on in this town, and it's got decent spicy scenes. I wish it wasn't 3:00am so I could start book two immediately!
This was certainly a bully book! 😳 Great start to the series, interesting characters and a storyline that is totally captivating! I cannot wait for the next book!

Okay! Let me start by saying this book is the s***. It gives the right amount of possessive/dominance I was looking for in book. I got this book free with amazon prime. I’m reviewing this product on my own! Highly recommend
There's so much mystery in this first installment of the Elite series, I'm so ready to see what happens in the second book. Well developed characters and a kick ass heroine makes this book a must read..
