A traditional Regency romance, drawing room rather than bedroom.

Connie’s older sisters have managed to find husbands, but now it’s her turn and she is not sure she wants to marry at all. Having only just escaped her late father’s restrictive regime, she’s reluctant to surrender her freedom to another man just yet. If only she could find one who would fall so adoringly in love that he would do anything for her.

The Marquess of Carrbridge has been taken in by ambitious young ladies before, and he’s not about to fall for any more trickery to ensnare him. Nor will he be pushed into marriage by his hectoring grandmother. From now on, he’s determined to take charge of his future and do things his own way. But not every young lady is dazzled by his title, and sometimes the best of plans may go awry.

I live in the beautiful Highlands of Scotland with my husband. I like chocolate, whisky, my Kindle, massed pipe bands, long leisurely lunches, chocolate, going places in my campervan, eating pizza in Italy, summer nights that never get dark, wood fires in winter, chocolate, the view from the study window looking out over the Moray Firth and the Black Isle to the mountains beyond. And chocolate. I dislike driving on motorways, cooking, shopping, hospitals.

The lovely lady in my avatar is Archduchess Clementina of Austria (1798-1881), Princess of Salerno, painted around 1839.

NOTE: I read Regency romances as well as write them, and I review them all on my website, or you can find them right here on Goodreads on my real-name account at Pauline M. Ross.

I finally got to the installment I was most eager to read. Connie married the oldest brother from the next series and many eagle-eyed readers snapped some books in that series up when it was offered for free.

Connie did not emerge as a favorite in the first two books. She was a little immature and selfish. Now, a season in London has her becoming a much more sympathetic character. She is kind to all and not very interested in the social games of the ton.

It was great to see Reggie and Dev in this book as some of the events are referenced in their series. They don’t come across as the clueless gentleman that they are in their own books. Humphrey has a fun cameo as well.

Connie seems to be the first sister not as traumatized by the controlling father of this family. Her part of revealing the backstory is in exploring her mother’s family ties. It comes there no surprise that Lady Sarah also has some skeletons in the closet.

It continues to amaze me that Mary Kingswood pack so much into 200 to 250 pages!

I think that this series gets better and better. I wasn't sure what kind of character the Marquis of Carrbridge would turn out to be and in all honesty, although we had already met Connie, I hadn't really formed much of an opinion of her. I have to admit, that in their own story, I liked them both immensely.
Carrbridge is a bit of a fool, although only really because he is used to getting his own way and being someone of consequence. He clearly needs a wife who will challenge him and make sure that he doesn't get too big for his boots and Connie certainly offers that.
I really enjoyed this book and I also really liked Carrbridge's brothers, I believe that they get their own stories in another series. I'm looking forward to reading the other three stories in this series first though. I still don't like Dulcie, so I am really interested to see if she will redeem herself when it's her turn.

Connie Allamont is one of the prettiest of the Allamonts, and that plus her vivacious and romantic personality has meant trouble for her older sisters. But she needs all the charms she can muster when she spots the beautiful Marquess of Carrbridge across a ballroom and immediately wants him for her own.

Connie feels just a bit like Emma, and I quite liked her principled objections to the social whirl she finds herself in while trying to keep pace with the Marquess.

"A note on historical accuracy: I have endeavored to stay true to the spirit of Regency times, and have avoided taking too many liberties or imposing modern sensibilities on my characters."

That much is certain.

Connie, the third daughter of Allamont Hall, is content to take her sweet time in selecting a husband. For about ten pages. She's glad to be free of the hand of her domineering father, at least until an incredibly hot and rich suitor comes along, at which point she releases the hounds of betrothal, so to speak, and dedicates herself to "winning" him. Since the blurb mentions Connie's reluctance to marry, I had thought it was going to be a larger part of the story. (Those pesky modern sensibilities at work, no doubt!)

The Marquess, our heroine's supposed love interest, has a few POV sections in the text, but they're of no particular length and only come about when it would be convenient for the narrative. I don't mind POV switches, but when they're either three or four paragraphs long OR an entire chapter long, it gets a little messy.

Lord Reginald, brother of the Marquess, makes a good showing by being kind and funny and generally amiable. He and Connie hit it off immediately; she admits that it's easy to talk to him. And they share interests! It seems a match made in heaven, until we learn that... he's not that hot.

That turns out to be one of the bigger parts of Connie's dilemma.

The Marquess is so hot, but he's engaged to someone else! (Nevermind that he and Connie don't really get along, share interests, or have conversations that are even remotely interesting. He's hot.)
Lord Reginald is entertaining and caring, but he's so not hot that Connie, toward the end of the book, feels that she's resigning herself to a fate worse than death when it seems that her only option is to marry him. (He who is still rich, by the way, so at least we know for sure that the attractiveness thing is the sticking point.)

It's acceptable to not be attracted to someone. It's just that the author has this really strange vendetta against people who aren't good-looking.

At any rate, But he's so... hot.

I know. My modern sensibilities, or whatever.

Maybe the marriage will end up being a nuclear meltdown later on. We'll see.

(In addition to "ugly" people, Amy was also shafted almost completely during this book. Does the author also hate Amy? Has Amy's pregnancy turned her into glass, rendering her incapable of interacting with other human beings? Has her quite frankly horrible husband something to do with this? These questions will probably be left unanswered.)

I hesitated to write a review on this book, because despite its excellency I am still not the biggest fan of the character. Connie is pretty, fashionable and completely unashamed to want to marry a man based on his looks. Whilst her prototype for a husband is based on her sister Amy's husband, Mr Ambleside she looks for someone that will not restrict her the same way her father controlled her mother.

The opportunity to go to London arises when Lord Reginald offers a fake betrothal so she could see if she is still interested in his brother, the Marquess. Connie comes alive in London, the fashionable beau monde and whirlpool of social events. Far from it inflating her self-esteem, Connie shows how much she appreciates sincerity and dislikes the constant jumble to up her social standing. For someone, who is seen as sweet and pretty and not necessarily smart, Connie shows wisdom in treating people with kindness and compassion, without imposing a harsh judgement.
More than anything Connie discovers to herself, she loves and appreciates the importance of a loving family, both immediate and extended. Something both her parents had deprived her and her sisters of.

Whilst the hero, the marquess is very pleasant, one does not get a good sense of him until he blunders in his treatment of Connie. This is where the easy-going Connie shows her resolve, despite the attraction of a title, larger house, social standing she has been deeply scarred by her upbringing, the tyranny of her father invening petty rules so he could be in control. She views marriage as more of a partnership a very progressive thought for a Regency era gentlewoman.

It was a very well-written book, even if its heroine was not someone I would ordinarily empathise with.

Connie and Carrbridge.
Connie grew on me. I found her flighty and immature. Carrbridge is full of himself as a marquess. I honestly liked Reginald better but Connie was determined to like Carrbridge. I don’t feel like they connected in this story as they should have for a couple who claims to love each other. It was a relief to see Carrbridge get over his self-importance and put Connie first at the end of the book. Hopefully it lasts.
Reminder for future me:
Connie is determined to have Carrbridge offer for her at first sight. Her attraction to him throughout the book seems to be mostly physical. Carrbridge acts just friendly to her but claims later that he was holding back to assess her character before he got too involved with her. When c finds out that C is engaged to Jess (the school master’s sister) she is upset but is determined to not let it deter her finding a good match. C’s sister, Harriet, and brother, Reginald, tell c that they are not happy with C’s choices in bride and come up with a scheme to keep c in C’s company and go to London with their family for the season. Reginald and c pretend to be betrothed so that c can join the family in London and have her first season. Reginald is an attentive finance to c but C is not very attentive to J which confuses c who later finds out that it was all fake just as her relationship with R was. The brothers came up with the plan to be fake engaged so that C could get to know the real c without her being hung up on “catching” him but R starts to fall for c. When C and R get into a punching fight about c she gets angry about it and C tells her that he knows she wants to marry him and not to worry about R. She suddenly finds him arrogant and high handed and rejects C’s sad “proposal” and leaves their home to stay with her married sisters. R stays attentive to her and c decides to settle for him even though she is sad about losing C. In the end R realizes that c is not in love with him and tells her that C loves her and she should go to him. C and c find each other and confess their love.

E-Reader. British Courting /Love Story

Connie Allamont is the next daughter in line to be married per father's will. They do not live i London, but gets a chance to be invited and announced a a grand ball in London.
The Ton back then was very important to young women coming out and many possible suitors. The rich and people with titles very at the very top of society back then.
Connie mets a Marquess who she has intense feelings for, but also making believe that she's unofficially engaged to his brother.
You need read this book to find who will win Connie's heart!

It's a good read. Enjoy!

A Delight!
Oh Connie, you are such a chump! This young lady took offense at the way she was propose to and .... You'll have to read this delightful story to find out for yourself what happens.
Mary Kingswood has written another delightful story in this series and Joanna Stephens narrated it to perfection.
Loved the characters, their strengths and their weaknesses, loved the story and the suspense as it unravelled. Just enjoyed it thoroughly and hope you choose to either read it or listen to the audiobook as I did.
I received a free copy of the audiobook from the author and the review above is unbiased and voluntarily given.

Another disappointing Regency romance--this one by Mary Kingswood. Connie wants a season in London but is sure her mother, Lady Sara, will not agree. Lord Reginald Marwood comes up with a solution for her: become engaged to him and she can accompany his family to London where she will enjoy a season. Meanwhile Connie hears that the Marquess of Drummoor is secretly engaged to Jess Drummond and will be coming to London as well. While there Connie realizes she loves the Marquess. This is very strange because she spends more time with Lord Reginald. The Marquess is hardly around. Not a fun Regency romance at all.

Ahh! This one was so good! I’m really enjoying these books. Each sister so far has been so different from the last. I think I like the love story between Belle and Mr Burford the most still, but I liked this one’s story more.

I really wish there was more from the Marquess’ point of view. In the previous books, the men had a lot more input, but there were only maybe 5 times in this whole book where we got to see the Marquess’ side of things. I really think that was one of the only drawbacks for me.

4 stars.

Connie is possibly one of the most annoying, hypocritical heroines I have had the pleasure of reading recently. It's okay if she is scheming to win the Marquess (after all he is rich, good looking, rich, and extremely good looking) but considers it quite immmoral when the Marquess was testing her true intentions toward him. It's only after this that she decides that personality matters too.

It's a good thing that her book wasn't the first or I would have doubted reading the next.

Connie has been the cream of the crop so far in this series. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it, especially as some of the characters from Sons of the Marquess, which I had already read, appeared. (It was obvious that I have read the 2 series out of order, but this did not affect my enjoyment!). Amy was a rocky start to this series, but it has improved with each book and I now look forward to learning the fate of the last 3 daughters!

I got about halfway thorough before I really started disliking all of the main characters. None of them seem to have a conscience. Connie's father has a 2nd family with his mistress, Connie's mother is having an affair (hinted). Connie is slightly manipulative and willing to throw another girl (perfectly nice) under the bus to get what she wants, the marquess is happy to use another girl just for fun, pretending they are unofficially engaged. Yuk.

I have enjoyed the books in this series and again liked this one. I am glad to have the chance to get to know Connie better, as the other books did not give her much personality. It took me a while to warm up to her beaus, but in the end the "one" really was charming and showed his love. I look forward to the next book in the series to see how Dulcie ends up in love.

A fun read. I like that Connie got to step away from the family and figure out who she really was. This time the love triangle was much more entertaining to read.
I got a set of the first three in this series free with kindle unlimited. I am not sure I would have paid to buy them, but I enjoyed them enough to read more from the KU program.

Still enjoying the series. Kingswood has a gift for secondary characters that then come in to be players in later books.

This one is a little P&P like in its dramatic moment, but overall you still like these good people.

Three books away from finishing my 2018 swim through Regency romance. I'm still enjoying it, but am coming to the point where I am glad to see the shore.

Amy and Belle have found husbands so it is now Connie's turn. However, she isn't sure she wishes to marry since she is free from a domineering father and enjoying not being under another man's thumb. It will take quite a man to convince her otherwise, especially since her decision could affect the futures of her younger sisters. Another enjoyable read set in the Regency period.

I've enjoyed this series of books. I have never read a "romance" novel before but found this series to be interesting and am well pleased that there were no long sordid sex descriptions, which I abhor. An enjoyable read.

Connie isn't sure she wants to marry at all. On the other hand she knows she must in order for her younger sisters to receive their dowry. She gets the chance for a London season that ends rather badly but she ends up engaged to the man she loves.

Time In London Grows Tiresome for Connie

I enjoyed the character of Connie. She seemed more levelheaded than her two previous sisters. Still the supposition that she "try to attach" a man just because he had a title, is hard to understand.

Quite my favorite

Of this Allamont series, Connie has to be mt favorite. The whole series is fun and full of mysteries and the wonderful Allamont and Marford families. But in Connie we are kept guessing by clever misdirection as well.
