Hirohiko Araki ( 荒木飛呂彦) is a Japanese manga artist. He left school before graduation from Miyagi University of Education.

He enjoys the baseball manga Kyojin No Hoshii (Star of the Giants); the video games Mario Kart and Bomberman; and likes Prince and other African-American singers, as well as jazz, rock, and rap.

He is a recipient the Tezuka Award for manga.

Mafia! Italy! Magical Battles with tons of ability-users with over-the-top hairdos and outlooks! What more can I ask for?

PS: but I still am not a fan of the manga-ka's artwork.

Italy really does the trick! I also like the over-the-top sense of humor, the seemingly impossible challenges and the fast-paced and delightful story~want to read the next volume so bad!

2001 A.D.. The first three months of the 21st century have passed quickly. In the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey, humanity traveled all the way to Jupiter...at least in the part I saw before falling asleep. But I--Koichi Hirose, by the way--am traveling somewhere else: Italy, a country of ancient history, but also of economic crisis. I'm here on vacation...and also because I've taken on a bizarre job from Mr. Jotaro.

Fully aware of my literary and film interests, my well-read son recommended Golden Wind, part 5 of Hirohiko Araki's ongoing manga saga Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. He knew I am not into manga, but he knew this particular saga intersected with some of my interests. He provided necessary backstory from Parts 1-4, patiently answered a few of my exasperated questions, and I was off on a bizarre narrative in which gender distinctions are blurred by dress and hairstyle, selected characters possess strange special powers--the power to impart life energy!, the power to add a zipper to anything punched!, the power to only move and use your ability within shadows!, the power to freeze an object in place by making it too heavy to move!-- and then fight and forge friendships in a myriad of settings and circumstances. Face it--it's called Jojo's Bizarre Adventure for legitimate reasons.

Normally, I don't have the patience for manga. The narratives bounce all over the place and every character's emotions are either dialed into the red or--if they're "cool"--are never perturbed by the outrageous ongoings. No difference here--there's a lot of shouting and exclamation marks. Yet, somehow, I was pulled into the narrative. Somehow, I actually--God only knows how or why--gave a damn about the conflicts. I honestly want to know where this adventure is going and will actually continue.

The biggest frustration I had with this work were the action sequences. Despite the oddest articulation of onomatopoeia, there were many instances where I could not follow what exactly was happening to who. Araki has in mind some interesting animation sequences--but this isn't film, it's a comic book. Some of these sequences are next to impossible to articulate in the printed format--but that doesn't stop Araki from attempting them anyway. I can appreciate how someone adapting this for film would appreciate his attempts, would discern what animated effect he was striving for and clarify it with animation.

While I will not wear Jojo-inspired t-shirts or plaster Jojo-inspired posters in my bedroom, I will continue the saga.

All the action and over the top storylines we expect, with the usual flamboyant outfits and bizarre special abilities. Not for the faint hearted....content warning for violence and occasional bad language. But if you've read any of these volumes you will already be aware of that.

- a new part and it's set in italy!!
- i was excited to see familiar faces at the very first chapter.
- honestly, i want that language trick by rohan
- uh, i can't believe it. seeing dio's name again was chilling
- it's italy, so mafia is a given. "i will be a mafia man, then i will destroy them."
- the new protognaist has a weird connection to the joestar family. it's not as straightforward?
- a very italian name: Giorno Giovanna or GioGio (JoJo)
- these people do NOT look like teens!

Mi sono avvicinato a questa serie per caso. Avevo sentito molto parlare de Le bizzarre avventure di Jojo e mi incuriosiva. Avevo visto il primo episodio di Phantom Blood, la prima saga, ma poi vedendo che era in corso Vento Aureo (Golden Wind) e che era ambientato in Italia ho deciso di darci una chance. L'anime mi ha preso tantissimo, mi sono appassionata a dismisura e una volta finito sono andata alla mia solita fumetteria e c'era il primo volume. Ho DOVUTO prenderlo anche per vedere le differenze tra anime e manga che ci sono, ma si tratta a mio parere di definire meglio il fantastico character design di Araki che nel manga sembra avere un tratto più deciso e duro che nell'anime è più fluido, ma non dolce. C'è molta fedeltà alla storia e alle situazioni raccontate con giusto alcuni particolari extra forse proprio per chi segue la serie dagli inizi o quanto meno conosce la precedente saga e quindi il personaggio di Koichi e il suo incontro con Giorno Giovanna ha più senso e trovi subito il punto di unione che c'è tra le saghe. Viene anche reso benissimo il movimento e la tensione sui volti dei personaggi, adoro!

Bought this in Giorno’s own Napoli and it proved to be a great way to start reading something in italian. Also my introduction to Jojo in manga form.

Araki sets this one off in greatly energetic fashion, with the hustle and bustle of Naples backgrounding the introduction of Giorno Giovanna, really charismatic as a dashing street scoundrel, flashing an astute side-eye as he steals your wallet, his reserved demeanour hiding a heart of gold (and a stand of gold as well, obviously). Giorno aspires to join the local mafia Passione to dismantle its shady drug trade from the inside, and does this side-by-side with zipper-guy Bruno Bucciarati, who matches him in poker-faced determination.

From here it’s the familiar stand battles, elaborate chess matches often supplied by Koichi’s sweaty, shock-faced explanations, and gorgeous panels with dramatic poses and large chunky lettering. This first volume is anchored by two central fights, both appropriately intricate, which succeed in kicking the story into high gear.

It’s that time again, time to go on another Bizarre Adventure! This time we’re going to the beautiful country of Italy, Two Years have passed since the battle between the Joestars and Yoshikage Kira, now Koichi Hirose arrives in Naples, Italy to find Haruno Shiobana, a mysterious young man who was confirmed to be the estranged son of DIO, who was conceived with Jonathan Joestar’s Stolen Body. One of the things that will grab the reader immediately is that Hirohiko Araki moves away from the muscular physiques to slimmer and refined bodies, more of a Supermodel type of physique. The fashion is on par for its era, especially with the character designs from twisted bob cuts to donut-ringed golden tressels and high fashion on every character, making it feel like they’re wearing Gucci and Versace.

For fans returning to this series, it offers fans a clever and fascinating flashback sequence that blends in and honors the Joestar Legacy. The story begins with Giorno Giovanna, as mentioned before has a connection to the Joestars due to DIO but has inherited traits from both DIO and Jonathan Joestar, we learn after his battle with Bruno Bucciarati that he wants to infiltrate the Mafia and defeat the boss of Passione, who is a complete mystery at this time and not even Bucciarati nor his men know anything about their boss and become a Gang-Star, With the aid of a capo and his men, and fueled by his resolve, Giorno sets out to fulfill his goal of absolving the mafia of its corruption.

Araki prepared the reader for a long-action-filled mystery, one that fans were desperately craving at the time and immediately got their wish with this volume, it contained four arcs to help fans get into the Bizarre World of Giorno Giovanna and the Passione Crew. One of the best moments of this Manga would have to be going into detail on Stands, with Stardust Crusaders we were introduced to the concept of a Stand and the capabilities of one and it moved us into the idea of what kind it could be depending on one’s self. Diamond is Unbreakable took the concept even further where this time it could take on the paranormal side and even introduced the idea of a stand that creates a temporal loop, rewinding time by roughly an hour. With Golden Wind, however, moves into space and dimension bending. We’re introduced to a Stand that could Physically Alter One’s the State of Energy or a Stand that could create pockets of space and meld them together, introducing us to state manipulation. Overall this was a great way to create new challenges and explore how creating a story can be with the right creator, Golden Wind Volume One is a safe and perfect way to introduce a new reader to, regardless of the reader if they only watched the Anime or read any other parts of the series.

Jojo (or GioGio in this case) is back and it is as bizarre as ever. Part 5 sees Koichi traveling to Italy for a vacation and to collect a skin sample from a random teenage (totally normal holiday fun). After arriving at the airport he instantly runs into the guy he was going to track down. He quickly remembers that Stand users are drawn to each other is this what is happening here? Koichi then falls for a con and loses all his possessions. He calls home to explain what has happened and report that he may have run into the guy he was looking for. We now learn that this mysterious teenager may be the son of Dio. It's not long before we are meeting other Stand users and getting into adventures with the mafia. Lots of action, lots of fun, lots of bizarreness.
This part is slightly different due to the lack of 'J' in the vast majority of the Italian langue which has lead to the character being GioGio in this part. As with previous Parts it took me a while to get used to who was who as so many of the characters look female but turn out to be male. This is not helped by all school uniforms being drawn as if they are BDSM outfits. You really never know what you are going to get with Jojo.

The serious continues as usual, there are weird character designs and cool powers, but unlike all previous parts, this part is completely separated from the main continuum. Yeah the main character is kinda related to all the others but except the first few chapters the story is completely isolated from the rest. In this part we are presented with a whole new cast of characters, without any reoccurring ones. This isolates the story even more, and I have a hard time deciding whether I am completely on board with this or no. On one hand the new characters are absolutely amazing and as usual Araki makes each one stand out so much it's kind of comical, but on the other hand it is a little hard to even call this Jojo, at least as it used to be. The main character's name is stretched like crazy to even make it "Jojo's bizarre adventure", but whatever, the main aspects are still here, and if not better than ever, then at least as good as they used to be: The characters, the stands, the enemies, and now, surprisingly, some themes. I have to say, the epilogue is incredible, and while it is a common criticism that we don't see the actual transition to the ending, it's just the final fight that skips into the ending, I think it is better this way.

As I read this manga, I heavily compared it to the anime series on Netflix. This volume is about Giorno's backstory and meeting the gangsters of Italy. Maybe because I've seen the anime before, I think the manga makes it choppy with the different scenes. It just doesn't seem as smooth, but what can I say: it is a bunch of frames compared to a few panels. There are also little things that the manga shows that the anime doesn't show. Koichi says that Rohan wrote inside him which made him be able to speak Italian, but I didn't see that scene in the anime. The manga goes into more depth, and I appreciated the information. Part five is a fun part in the Jojo series, and if you need to read a goofy, cool, fast-paced manga, then you can definitely count on Jojo. This manga does have some gruesome scenes and swearing, so if you don't like that then this definitely isn't for you.

This is literally stardust crusaders in italy LOL! but better!!

The aesthetic in this manga is absolutely making me feel I transcended heaven! I truly love this part!! But I think I will recommend to watch it than to read it 'cause the anime is just really flesh out!

What I love about this as well is that despite being the main character, Giorno is literally like the supporting character instead of the side characters! Which is great! Love the exploration and I wish to see more in future where a main character, instead of being in the center, is the one in the side line!

The stands here are getting cooler the more characters are introduced!! My favorite stand is also here which is Bruno's stand sticky fingers, it is just so creative asf. I love how it seems like for me, Bruno is the main character here which I really like because he is my favorite character here as well in this part!

GIORNO IS AWESOME IDC. Why do people always hate on this part and part 6?? I find them both to be so amazing. I love the story progression in this part, as well as the developments of characters. I understand Giorno doesn't develop much other than power-wise but I think that's fine. He helps those around him develop, and I think Gold Experience is definitely a reflection of how he aids the Bucci gang to grow and how he 'brings them back to life' in a sense. THE REQUIEM ARROW IS SO FUN AND I LOVE GER I DON'T CARE IF IT'S OVER POWEREDDDDD!!! Wish we could get more mini stories about Gio, Trish, Mista and Fugo such as that lil purple haze short series since the characters in this part are some of my faves ever.

Apparently, the Italian language doesn't use the letter "J", aside from a relative few cases, such as loanwords and archaisms. Unfortunately, that left me without any names I could use as a "JoJo" (which would be pronounced like "YoYo" anyway). Instead, for Part 5, I spelled the protagonist's name true to Italian: "GioGio".
Incidentally, in Italian the letter "H" is always silent, so sometimes my name gets pronounced not as "Hirohiko" but rather "Iroiko", and it makes me think, "Who the heck is that?" '

Part 1, Phantom Blood: Neat concept, could use some work
Part 2, Battle Tendency: Very unique shonen template, very stylish, good job
Part 3, Stardust Crusaders: Yes. Yes! YES!!! An utter classic, Araki cannot top this.
Part 4, Diamond Is Unbreakable: I was a fool to doubt Araki, he exists beyond the constraints of genre and template. He can do whatever he wants and all I can do is observe and appreciate. He's on another level.
Part 5, Golden Wind (so far): Perhaps Araki is human, after all... I'd put this at just a notch below Diamond Is Unbreakable, which is still a darn good performance.

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Part 5-Golden Wind by Hirohiko Araki is about a high school age kid named Giorno Giovanna who has this special ability called a "stand" and his journey in taking down the leader of the Italian gang known as the "Passione" so that he can stop the illegal sale of drugs to underage people and to cut off the drug routes from Asia and Africa. The book/series is very entertaining and has a great storyline. It is probably one of the best manga I have ever read because of its great storyline and great pacing.

I love that we appear to be getting a complete JoJos series in hardcover. These books are great and look awesome on the shelf. I really loved Diamond is Unbreakable and this is a bit of a change of pace, but I'm glad Koichi is here. Don't feel like I have the big picture yet and Giornio's stand is a bit confusing to me a true moment. I'm sure I'll be hype before long, bit at the moment I miss Morioh and the color purple.

Me encanta como en el manga se explica mucho mejor cosas en el anime me quedaron debiendo, eso y como los personajes aparentan más o menos la edad que tienen, antes pensaba que Bucharati (espero estar escribiendolo bien) era mucho mayor que Giorno, pero en realidad no pasaba de los 20, creo que tiene 18 y lo parece, Jotaro es un caso aparte XD.

JoJo’s just keeps getting better and better! First of all, I absolutely LOVE Giorno’s character design. It’s top tier! I wasn’t too sure if I could like him since he’s Dio’s spawn, but he seems like a pretty good kid. It was nice seeing Koichi and Jotaro, I hope we see Josuke soon. I can’t stop saying Bucciarati! He has another great design. Looking forward to the next volume!

Often seen as a spiritual sequel to part 3 (structurally), Part 5 often gets sidelined in conversations. Since the anime started I was finally tempted to read the manga, and oh my god. A wonderful story with some truly gripping deaths. Very cool. Also having your terrifying shadown villain named after King Crimson is somehow genius and stupid at the same time.
