It's coming! SPLORCH! IT'S COMING! What happens when slime shows up on your doorstep? BLERB. Should you let it in?
FLERK. Nope. Never open the door, or else...OH NO! The kids in this book opened the door!! Slime is everywhere! It's icky and sticky and gloppy and gunky. There's no hiding it. And now it's on the move, heading for the school, ready to take over the whole town! Well, it truly takes a village to defeat this flourescent menace. Not until every construction worker, cook, kid, and member of the marching band pitches in does the slime get divided and conquered...until one tiny blob is left, glerp, that fits neatly into a lunchbox. Whew! Well, that takes care of that, right? Phlop.
Not since THE BLOB has a tenacious, tensile terror so paralyzed and terrorized a suburban landscape. In every town, in every home with children lurks this menace. With its hilarious deadpan tone and nearly as many onomatopoetic noises as The Book With No Pictures, this clever storytime hit will captivate children and grown-ups alike. Slime lovers, who are legion, will relish every glorpy word!
Warning!!! This book will cause infectious giggles and demands for repeat reads! Too Much Slime is the hilarious tale of what happens when slime invades - every parent's nightmare and every kid's dream! It is filled with fun wordplay, onomatopoeia and is a treat to read aloud. I highly recommend adding it to your shelves.

Too Much Slime by Frances Gilbert is a creative, and fun story about two children and their adventure with the out-of-control slime. The text is written using onomatopoeia and other descriptive words. As a teacher, I believe this book is a perfect read-aloud to focus on English Language Arts concepts such as prepositions or adjectives. Readers of all ages will laugh at each attempt to redirect the slime. The illustrations by Vin Vogel revolve around the slime, while also focusing on each character in the book. I especially love the expressions on each person trying to help. In addition, the cat and dog on each page add extra fun to the story. Too Much Slime will be an instant hit, no matter which age group reads it.
"It wasn't really a knock on the door. More of a squelch. Or a thwack. Or a blerb. We shouldn't have opened it." That is a great first page, and sure to hook young readers right off the bat. Then, the perfect green shade of the slime, and the evocative use of onomatopoeia, make this a great choice for read alouds. After all, who doesn't love words like zlerk, phlap and squerch? It's also fun to watch the green slowly fill the pages, prompting everyone in town to come together to try to stop the squelchy slime's spread.
The illustrations are the best part of this book. Children who don't think too hard about what happens off the page may find the story entertaining, but there are two big issues with the plot line. 1. the slime (which can think) just appears and tries to take over? 2. everyone scoops up a bit-but where do they put it?? AND it can apparently grow and start to take over again if you let it out? Where did it come from to start with? I have so many questions!
A funny book about slime that takes over a town! The whole town works together to contain it...until the cat knocks something off the table...
This book is silly and fun, and also really good for teaching both onomatopoeia and adjectives. It is illustrated with black and white line drawings with pops of color over them-including of course, the bright green slime, which gets bigger and bigger throughout the book.
After I heard a talk by Frances on humor I picked up this book and I liked it. The vocabulary is fun like squelch, blerb, thwack, and so many other words to describe the slime getting loose and running through town. The green slime is everywhere. The kids contain the slime but the romp through the story with her choice of descriptive verbs makes it a hit with children. It is missing a recipe for slime which parents will appreciate.
really original. what kid doesn't like slime? 2 kids open their front door and slime comes in. lots of onomatopoeia. there was more and more slime. they didn't know where to keep it-it was spreading all over town
There’s never too much slime! We love reading this book with our 6 year old. The funny slime sounds keep him engaged and laughing, and it’s great for his early reading skills to sound them out. It’s a fun, engaging story with vibrant illustrations. Highly recommend!
Funny stuff. This gets 4 stars both for the funny sound effect words and for the line "who are we kidding--the cats slept through it all." Which is what cats do.
An out-of-the-box format and surprise ending story. This was a super fun read aloud with all the fun words and sound effects. I used this as a mentor text in my writing workshop.
