The Modified Blueprint

The mission seemed straightforward:

Get in.

Get the Cipher.

Get out.

But the Cipher is just the beginning.

Having achieved the highest status in the agency, Chris is settling into his new position as a boss when one of his agents discovers an item for sale on the black market. She believes it is called the "Cipher" and that it is highly sought after by the opposition.

When Chris proposes opening a new mission to retrieve this "Cipher" before it reaches the enemy, the agency suggests a plan that will put his new position of authority—and his marriage—to the test.

With only days to prepare, he is sent back into the field to work undercover in the ominous Purebred Communities. Once inside, he quickly learns that the official reports were misleading and that the contained society is far more dangerous than he had been led to believe.

Fortunately, his extensive training and experience has already prepared him for the unexpected. He is prepared for the unknown and prepared to find the Cipher.

But nothing can prepare him for the truth.

In this gripping sequel to The Unexpected Inlander, Chris sees firsthand the inner workings of a contained society, confronts the leader of an intricate criminal network, and uncovers unfathomable information about the past.

Kellyn Thompson is the author of THE UNEXPECTED INLANDER, a novel that addresses prejudice in a world where human genetic modifications are commonplace, where class is strictly governed, and where people have no choice in what they do or where they live. I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy from the Author. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. The Modified Blueprint by Kellyn Thompson is a fabulous second installment in this futuristic world.
Will Cameron get the needed information before she is stuck in the Purebred settlement?
Chris and Cameron Rockford
Chris is doing well in his new position as one of the chiefs. However, when one of his team stumbles upon a lead, Cameron is asked to help the country out. Cameron will be placed in a Purebred Settlement, and Cameron won't be able to help her. Many things could go wrong, and the Presidents have made it clear that if Cameron gets sick, she must stay in the settlement. They get first-hand knowledge of the Purebred system, and even though they get everything they need, it is not a good way to live.
The Cipher
The cipher is a possible copy of the Modified Blueprint. If that were to fall into Mexico's hands, they could create a virus to kill all the modified humans living in the Sectors. Cameron is extremely well educated on things before the war and after the war. So, she has an unusual outlook that most her age doesn't have. However, Chris is also smart enough to question things presented to him even when they go against what he believes.
Modified Blueprint CRMy Thoughts
I love this series. This installment has a bit of the 2020 pandemic possibility in it. No, it doesn't reference it, but seriously the author moves with it fabulously. I like how Cameron and Chris are loyal to the Sectors and keep an open mind. President Anders shows a different side of herself this time. I am not sure that she is the good person that she projects. The things that are revealed to Chris about his past are mind-blowing for him and me. The actual order of the Sectors isn't the utopia that it seemed like before. I love the realism.
Five Stars
My rating for The Modified Blueprint by Kellyn Thompson is five stars. I love the world, characters, and problems they face each day, not just the crazy missions they go on. Ms. Thompson, keep writing; you are doing a brilliant job. I highly recommend this book and series. If you haven't already, check out the review of the first book in the series.

Author Kellyn Thompson starts off with action and high stakes in The Modified Blueprint, the sequel to The Unexpected Inlander. Once again, the quick pace moves the story along and has the reader anticipating what's to come. Amidst the dangerous mission, secrets, and potential threats of both government and "outsider" forces, there's hope in the form of the devotion our two main characters have for each other.

The plot of The Modified Blueprint more deeply explores the functions of the government and society that Kellyn Thompson has created. There's quite a bit of information given to the reader - especially at the beginning - that could have felt a little overwhelming. But the author has an appealing matter-of-fact tone that stays consistent throughout the book, and makes the paragraphs of details pleasantly flow with the narrative; these sections inform the reader without feeling like an encyclopedia entry.

This matter-of-fact, straightforward tone continues into the dialogue and internal reflections between and of the characters. This is not to say everyone has everything sorted, but it's refreshing to read about confident characters who are honest (to themselves and to close loved ones) about not having everything figured out. Although Cam and Chris do hold one or two secrets close to their chests, the way they confide in each other about everything else makes it feel like those secrets are held not to be deceptive, but to temporarily shield the other from the unknown in order to prevent potentially unnecessary panic. Every step of the way, the author shows how devoted they are to each other, and while they may be surrounded by veiled truths and insincerity, they don't hide themselves from each other.

Each event in The Modified Blueprint holds and enhances the reader's attention, from the new mission assignment and undercover interactions, to the sweet banter between Chris and Cam. Even the conclusion added more complexity to the characters' situations by giving answers that led to more questions - which has this reader hoping for a third installment. Pick up The Unexpected Inlander and launch right into The Modified Blueprint - you're sure to to be enthralled by Kellyn Thompson's writing too.

Five things:
1. Sequel to The Unexpected Inlander
2. More focused on fleshing out the world as opposed to the romance, which I appreciated
3. Secret agents
4. Dystopian and disease-ridden future
5. Discussions of genetic modifications

I enjoyed the first book in this series for its unique ideas and satisfying story arc, and I think this second book only improved on the series. I don't think that the first book was poorly written at all, but I will say that the writing and world-building have only continued to improve in this series as the author writes and publishes more. As a reviewer, it's always really exciting to watch this happen over time, so reviewing the first two books in this series back-to-back has been a great pleasure. This second book also set up very nicely for the series to move forward in the future.

Out of the two main characters, I think Cameron is my favorite over Chris, but they do make an astoundingly good team. Hope to see how that dynamic shifts or grows in the future based on the factors that lead to the continuation of the series.

Overall, a very fun and creative read that absolutely avoids second-book syndrome like the plague. Bravo!

The Modified Blueprint is (to me) a story about loyalty, and betrayal. The story follows Chris and Cam as they race to find a dangerous piece of information that could possibly risk the human population. Along the way, they each uncover family secrets that changes their lives in unimaginable ways, all the while, trying to figure out their place in society. Captivating and compelling, The Modified Blueprint is a must read.

I loved the chemistry between the characters, and watching the relationships between them grow. The author has done a great job at portraying each character uniquely, as well as building a realistic and believable world. Just like the first book in this series, I was hooked from the start and couldn't stop reading until I reached the end. I highly recommend this book.

In Book 2 of the Unexpected Inlander, Chris and Cam Rockford go undercover in the Montana Purebred Community. Chris goes in as an officer, Cam as a brand new Community resident. Cam needs to find out who exactly is in charge of selling the Cipher to Mexico while Chris acts like he is mentally challenged to cover for the fact that he is older than the usual academy cadets used as Community officers. While they are in the Community, they find out that all is not as it is portrayed by The Order. This story has some action, danger, espionage, and romance that anyone might enjoy. Highly recommended.

Trigger Warnings
This book contains:
• Prisoner of war type treatment of one group of people
• Attempted murder
Characters
Chris and Cameron are back, this time as a team.
Cameron is in on the job. This time as the key asset. She’s forced with facing the reality of where she would have been as a Purebred if her family wasn’t rich. Not only that, but she’s forced to face her remaining family and what the loss of them means to her. The emotional turmoil challenges her in ways she hasn’t been challenged before.
Right in time to set her up for her next challenge in what sounds like a third book coming!
Chris is back in the field to support Cameron as she enters a Purebred Community, and as she confronts her family, what they’ve done in the past and what their legacy is continuing to do. Unlike in The Unexpected Inlander, Chris is the secondary character with Cameron taking centre stage. Although his character does give us some insight into how the government of the Sectors operates and gives us clues of some potential issues before facing a crisis of his own identity.
Storyline
Chris and his team discover a new item for sale that worries them. To help them find out what it is, Cameron is enlisted. She’s sent into a Purebred Community where she’s able to help them find the information they need to chase down and recover the Cipher.
Through two states they chase down and negotiate for the cryptic Cipher. They have no idea what it is, all they know is that they must get it for the safety of the Sectors. In doing so they learn some unfortunate truths about their families and themselves. These truths are so dramatic but come so late they feel like they’re setting up for a third book rather than really impacting the storyline of this one.
Overall Thoughts
I really enjoyed myself reading this one. I thought The Unexpected Inlander was a stand-alone book, so this sequel came as a bit of a surprise for me. Who knew so much drama and intrigue could happen in one family? Especially when almost all of them are already dead?!
Unlike the first book, as we get towards the end of this one it starts setting up some things that I’m assuming will come to light in a third book. When those hints follow up so much drama, emotional turmoil and intrigue, what will we be in for in the next book?
I’m really looking forward to the next one to see what will happen next for these two!
