When Miss Kathleen Calvert's hoydenish escapades put her brother's betrothal at risk, she is sent away to visit family in Scotland. Reformed rake Grant Kendrick has become a successful businessman, but his meddling family thinks he needs more in his life than work. He's put in charge of escorting houseguest Kathleen and her troublesome sister to his brother's home.

This is the fourth book in the Clan Kendrick series. It can stand alone, but there is a large cast of previous couples and characters who play a role. Kathleen is related to the previous heroine, and Grant is twins with the previous hero.

Sadly, this book did not work for me, and it was due largely in part to the very bratty sister, Jeannie. I was frustrated that all the adults just wrung their hands and no one put her in her place. Her antics were highly annoying, and she pulled so much focus that at 50% of the way through the book I was still waiting for the hero and heroine to have a meaningful interaction. For me, the romance was not balanced well with the other things taking place in the story. But, if you like a lot of meddling and family shenanigans, this book might be for you.

The Highlander's Irish Bride is the fourth book in Vanessa Kelly's Clan Kendrick series and is a historical romance with a mystery.

The villian of our mystery is cear fairly early on, but I enjoyed watching it unfold and the drama and danger it created. I liked Grant and Kathleen, I thought they were a sweet couple and a good balance for one another. But I feel like they were over-shadowed at many points during the book due to Jeannie and her dramatics. It took a good portion of the book for there to be any significant development between the two main characters and it's a slow-burning romance so that makes sense. But I feel like this was also due to the distraction of Jeannie.

Jeannie is supposed to be 16 years old, but she behaved more like an 8 year old. I know she was sheltered growing up, but the amount of sulking and temper tantrums was pathetic? And that's before you even add the many selfish and destructive choices she makes. I thought she may have been an amusing supporting character, but it very quickly changed to too much and she often distracted from the main characters. She never listens to the advice or wishes of those around her, she continues to make sneaky and dumb choices throughout the book that cause those around her a lot of trouble. The amount of leeway she was given by her sister and the others was crazy. I think I would have enjoyed the book more were Jeannie in the book far less or caused much less trouble.

You can read this book as a stand-alone, it won't impact your ability to follow the plot. There is a large cast of characters (Grant's family) that we have met through the previous book and which gives us some background information on the dynamics between the brothers. So you may want to read them in order, but you don't need to.

I love this series, but this has been my least favorite of the series thus far. I still enjoyed it, but certain plot points got in the way of my enjoying it more. I look forward to reading the next in the series though and reaidng the story of the youngest brother of the family.

When the possibility of scandal looms, Kathleen’s parents, hoping to preserve her reputation, send her to Scotland until the rumors die down. There she meets and is welcomed into the wonderful Kendrick family. Her constant escort is the handsome but dull Grant Kendrick, a serious businessman who has no time for Kathleen and her shenanigans.

Kathleen and Grant have an interesting, slow-building romance. At first, Kathleen is not overly impressed by Grant and finds him rather dull. Once she gets to know the man underneath the cool and detached exterior, however, her feelings change. The only problem is that Kathleen has her future planned out, and it involves a move to Ireland, not a relationship with a Scottish man. Grant has to work hard to prove that Kathleen’s future should include him.

Though he’s not thrilled to be tasked with the care of Kathleen and her younger sister, Grant can’t resist his feelings. He loves Kathleen’s energy and passion and her adventurous spirit, even if she is a bit accident and scandal-prone. Though he was much more like her in his youth, a tragedy changed Grant, and his more serious nature came with that change. He is strong and steady, with a calmness that contrasts with Kathleen’s vivaciousness and exuberance. They are total opposites, and you know what they say…These opposites attract!

Kathleen and Grant often struggle to read each other, but I think once they learn more about each other, they understand each other better and come to realize that they are not so different. Grant is very perceptive and understands why Kathleen acts the way she does. He sees Kathleen for the intelligent and complex woman that she is, and he loves her for it. Kathleen, in turn, can’t remember why she ever thought Grant dull, as he intrigues and excites her more than anyone else ever has. They share many experiences, both in the present and the past, and the way that they accept each other strengthens their bond. Both characters grow and change as they learn more about themselves and each other.

I love that characters from past books in the series have roles in this book. Sabrina and Graeme, in particular, are at the forefront of the story, as Kathleen and Grant spend time at the couple’s manor. Grant’s bond with his twin brother Graeme is wonderful, and it is clear that they have a strong connection. They know each other so well that they can communicate without speaking, and they are always there for each other. Their relationship, as well as all of the Kendricks, highlight the strength and importance of family. They love each other unconditionally and are unfailingly supportive of each other, which is shown throughout the series.

Just as his twin had always been there for him, no matter the trouble. Of course Graeme was usually the instigator of the trouble, but that hardly mattered. His brother’s love and loyalty had always been boundless. Whatever was asked was given, without question or hesitation.

My favorite secondary character is Angus, Grant and Graeme’s grandfather. Funny, meddlesome, and deeply loving, Angus brings a joy and levity to the story. I often found myself chuckling at Angus’ antics and his bumbling explanations. He is a family man who wears his heart on his sleeve and is always there to help, even though his help is usually more of a comical hindrance. He is an absolute delight!

Of the new characters in the book, I did not care for Kathleen’s younger sister Jeannie. She caused such unnecessary conflict and rarely changed, even when she knew she was being disrespectful or obstinate. Kathleen wavers in her discipline of Jeannie due to guilt and other things, which doesn’t help. I found her character to be very frustrating, though her actions progressed the plot and added to the obstacles Kathleen and Grant faced.

Grant and Kathleen face problems concerning stolen valuables, hijacked carriages, trying to control an obstinate teenager, attempted burglaries, and another man interested in Kathleen. As they try to figure out who is committing these crimes and deal with the other obstacles that stand in their way, the pair runs into more trouble and potential scandal. This all makes for a captivating and immersive read!

This is a great addition to the Clan Kendrick series and will appeal to readers who like historical romance with independent and slightly accident-prone heroines, swoon-worthy heroes, and an interesting story-line. Thanks so much to NetGalley, Zebra, and Vanessa Kelly for a copy of the book in exchange for my honest review.

Will they find a way out of the predicament they are embroiled in …

While I liked the wild side of the heroine, my feelings were cooled when she judged the hero upon a minute encounter even if she quickly changed her mind. While Grant the now serious twin sure appears as a wizard to the family business, like he made money simply appear.
Both are at first like the antithesis of the other.
But the romance is set off kilter by Kathleen’s sister.
Jeannie in fact stole the show and ruined most of the story with her antics. She is sixteen no unruly small kid, yet she acts like a wild pup, throwing fit and tantrum at everyone trying to curb her path.
Everybody tiptoed around her mischief, rather like they do with their grandda, Angus. But with no borders, it will only lead to more rebellious acts as she does not learn to bear frustration.
Still those two derailed the plot and unhinged the romance and lost me on the way until past half mark.

Hopefully, even if I had still to face the nonsense temper of Jeannie’s, Kathleen and Grant finally got time together. And they are sweet together, Grant leaving his businessman polish behind and Kathleen growing up a bit.

The villain was labeled from the beginning, so I was only interested in seeing how they would catch him, and this part was entertaining.

Having read the previous books in this series, I was excited about this one. I love the main characters, Kathleen and Grant, and although their attraction was obvious from the start, there were so many additional characters involved that I was hard put to sort out one from the other, resulting in some confusion. The plot of the story is good, however, it was hidden under so much dialogue that I found myself skimming over large parts of it. Part of a series, this book does come to a successful conclusion, but I do trust that at some point Kathleen's younger sister was put over someone's knee and given the spanking she obviously deserved. I received a copy of this novel as a gift through NetGalley and this is my honest and voluntary review.

** 3.5 Stars **

We first met Grant Kendrick in The Highlander’s Princess Bride when he and his twin brother Graeme were twenty-two, but acted like they were twelve. Several years have passed and now Grant is a totally different person. Our heroine thinks he is dull as dirt – at least she thinks that until she gets to know him. Grant is a work-a-holic who makes so much money for the family business they have begun to think he prints it. The family wants more for him, a life outside work, but he is totally uncooperative. Sounds like a man destined for a big fall. I liked Grant in this book where I had not cared for him in past books because of his immaturity. He has matured nicely and I like him very much.

Miss Kathleen Calvert, daughter of Baron Gorey, was born in Ireland. She was much loved by her parents and had the happiest and most unrestrained childhood until she lost her mother. Now, the exuberant, spirited Kathleen lives in London with her father and horrid stepmother. Kathleen can do nothing right – and to be honest, she knows she shouldn’t do some of the things she does. It is just that life, being proper ALL THE TIME is just so boring. That spirited exuberance has gotten her banned from London by her stepmother. If she was being banned to their estate, Greystone, in Ireland, Kathleen would be over-the-moon ecstatic. But no, that isn’t where she is being sent – she is going to back-of-nowhere in the highlands of Scotland. At least she’ll be with her cousin Sabrina (The Highlander’s English Bride) and she is happy to be seeing her.

Luckily for Kathleen, Gillian Penley, Duchess of Leverton (My Fair Princess), has gotten word of the impending scandal. Gillian has taken steps to squelch as much of the scandal as possible, but she agrees Kathleen must go to Scotland for the duration. Gillian has always wanted to meet her cousin, Victoria Kendrick, Countess of Arnprior (The Highlander’s Princess Bride), and offers to escort Kathleen to Glasgow for a short visit before Kathleen has to continue further into the Highlands. When they leave the following morning, Kathleen is relieved to spend some time with Gillian and then to be able to spend time with her cousin Sabrina. That relief only lasts two days until they discover Jeannie, Kathleen’s sixteen-year-old step-sister hiding in the luggage compartment of the coach.

I liked the chemistry between Grant and Kathleen. I could definitely see why each would be attracted to the other – even though neither of them saw it at the time. Both characters were strong, decisive, brave, and stubborn – and both were determined they didn’t need anyone else in their lives. Their instant attraction caused them both to shy away from the other. Of course, life intervened, stuff happened, they were thrown together, and nature took its course.

I enjoyed the book, but I wouldn’t read it a second time. Jeannie’s character was just entirely too annoying. She was a sixteen-year-old, spoiled, self-centered, brat of a girl who acted more like a five-year-old. Her antics filled the story and completely overshadowed the romance. We were well past the 50-percent mark in the book before we actually saw Grant and Kathleen have any alone time much less time for romance. If you add Angus’s antics to Jeannie’s, then you almost totally lose Kathleen and Grant.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

It's me again. The person who starts a series with book 4. I was in no way lost from not reading the previous books, but I do want to. The pricing on the first three is just weird (book 1 - 1.99, book 2 - 5.31, book 3 - 5.69 plus book 4 - 7.99).

This was a little slow to start and then at times didn't move along a quickly as I wanted it to. Kathleen gets in trouble, again, and is sent to Ireland by way of Scotland. While in Scotland she's robbed, finds a stowaway, gets kidnapped, tries to fend off a suitor she doesn't want, falls in love...not necessarily in that order. Grant is great, even if he starts out boring, but quickly realizes with Kathleen he's not that boring. Lots of previous peeps are present to help the couple out. The bad guy drama was meh in the end.

3.5 stars, rounded up.

When Kathleen Calvert, the daughter of Baron Gorey finds herself enmeshed in scandal, her step-mother insists that she leave London and go to stay with her cousin Sabrina in the highlands, Kathleen is devastated and longs to return home to Ireland. But her step-mother is adamant and refuses to back down, thankfully, Kathleen’s friend, Gillian, the Duchess of Leverton is planning a trip to Glasgow and offers to have Kathleen join her for a few weeks before heading to the highlands.

Kathleen and Gillian set out and just two days into the trip learn that Kathleen’s 16-year-old step-sister Jeannie has stowed away and refuses to return home. Reluctantly, Kathleen agrees to let Jeannie travel with them as Gillian assures them that her cousin Victoria Kendrick, the Countess of Arnprior (who happens to be sister-in-law to Sabrina) will not mind the extra company. So off they go.

When they arrive, they are welcomed with open arms by the family, all except Grant, who seems to be the complete opposite of Kathleen in every way imaginable, despite the family’s hints that super-sober and oh-so-boring Grant was once a hellraiser of the first order. Kathleen finds herself fighting an attraction to him and is almost relieved when Jeannie creates a scene that will see them traveling to the highlands much sooner than expected. But her relief is cut short when the matchmaking Kendricks insist that Grant accompany the ladies to Lochnager, home to his sister-in-law Sabrina and his twin brother, Graeme. Unbeknownst to Kathleen, Grant is also fighting an inconvenient attraction, but with no way out of escorting them, he agrees.

The trip turns out to be longer than expected when they are held up by highwaymen and his brother confesses needing help to get to the bottom of a recent crime wave. Grant doesn’t think he should stay, worried that he won’t be able to deny his attraction to Kathleen for much longer, but can’t refuse to help his brother. So he stays and their attraction grows, but will they get a HEA or will they leave the highlands brokenhearted?

The is was a well-written story, with great characters and a very slow-burning romance. The book is filled with witty banter, outspoken, unrepentant females, denied attraction, a heroine with surprising baby-calming talents, warm love scenes, more than one unrequited crush, a teenager with a penchant for causing trouble, meddling matchmakers, evil villains, and finally a well-deserved HEA. I liked this story, but OMG – Jeannie was such a brat, I find it hard to believe she was 16, because she acted like she was 6 most of the time, and EVERYONE coddled her, it was so over-the-top and annoying. In addition to that was the mystery of her family – if Kathleen and Jeannie were in fact step-sisters, why did they have the same last name? Not really a big deal, but I found it distracting. Overall, it was a good read with a decent mystery and likable leads. This is the fourth book in the series and could be read as a standalone, but I would recommend reading the books in order (including the Improper Princesses series if you are interested in Victoria & Gillian’s stories).

Lively, diverting read!

Fun continuation of the Clan Kendrick series. Grant Kendrick, the quiet twin meets his match and then some with the visit of Miss Kathleen Calvert (Sabrina Kendrick’s cousin—his twin Graeme’s wife) to Glasgow. Kathleen’s enroute to Lochnagar Manor in the highlands to keep company with Sabrina.
Kathleen has been rusticated to Scotland by her rather rigid stepmother to wait out a scandal she’d perpetuated. Chariot racing at dawn on Hampstead Heath! Oops! Kathleen didn’t help herself with her stepmother, Lady Helen Gorey (the bane of Kathleen’s life), when she added fuel to the fire by retorting to the charge of “racketing about”, “Actually, Mother, it was more than racketing about. It was neck and neck, cracking the whip, just like the charioteers of Ancient Rome. I’m sure we broke all sorts of speed records.”
Only a couple of days into her journey Kathleen discovers her stepsister Jeannie, a staunch supporter of Kathleen, although she’s a rather twittery young girl who’s perpetually falling in love or rather fixating her attentions on unfortunate males.
Grant finds himself escorting the two women to Lochnagar after an unfortunate cricket match. Hmmm! Despite all he’s attracted to Kathleen but she seems to regard him as rather boring, although after being robbed near the Manor that just might change. The dangerous Grant comes to the fore!
An absolutely delightful read!

I can never say enough about Vanessa Kelly. She is a story superstar. This is book 4 but can easily be read on its own, since Kelly does an awesome job introducing everyone and their past adventures.

Kathleen and Grant are perfect for each other and give each other exactly what the other needs. One is Irish and one is Scottish, one is fiery and independent and the other quiet and a homebody. And it isn't just a romance, as there are other side stories that move right along, keeping one from getting bored. Kelly gives us plenty of fun along the way. We read about waywardly sisters, theft and kidnappings.

I love how much family means to the Kendricks and how much they care for those adopted into the clan. All of the ladies are spit fires, which I love. And they don't necessarily need the men to complete them. Can Grant convince Kathleen that they can find love with each other and fit in each other's lives? One way to find out!

The Highlander’s Irish Bride, by Vanessa Kelly. My fellow readers I had so much fun reading this comical and passionate love story. Kathleen and Grant are brilliant together. Mrs. Kelly pulled off a wonderful love story for her readers. From the very comical moments to the passionate loving moments between Kathleen and Grant, the writer tossed in a little suspense that had me guessing to the end.
I didn’t pull all the clues together until the last hint. The book has so many exciting moments, I absolutely new that this story wouldn’t bore me. The dialogue among the characters didn’t stop. The conversations ran between the chapters with ease. As the reader I didn’t get lost in where the writer was leading me.
I also didn’t find the conversations boring or long winded. Each character had something to offer to the story. The story definitely had realistic moments to it. From the details and the thorough descriptions of the lands, the castles and the in between scenes, the writer offered me a story that played to my imagination. I found the drama was astounding. I was absolutely hooked to every detail in the book.
From the stowaway. The agonizing trip by Carriage from London to Scotland. Being highjacked by highwayman. Swapping insults with anyone that crossed their paths. Breaking out in fist fights at a game we now call baseball.
Duchess’s Threatening to shank supposed nobleman of the ton with hidden daggers on their person. With finally, a 16 year old holding people and a Vicar and a spy at gun point in a library. I say that I had a bang up good time reading this book. Let’s not forget a half crazed Grandda, Angus is his name, going around causing trouble any where that he placed his bum.
With all this happening it was left to Grant and his twin brother Graem to bring order to the Kendrick household. I also must tell you how very romantic Grant was to Kathleen. This was the best part to the story. He was so devastatingly handsome and attentive to Kathleen. He set his sites on her and didn’t stop his prowling until he surrendered to the ecstasy that he so desperately wanted to give to Kathleen.
Grant was all Highlander when it came to seducing Kathleen. Kathleen held up her own too. I always love it when the writer gives a strong male leading character, a strong, smart, confident leading female love interest. My fellow readers... with the laughs, the giggles and the enjoyment of reading the chaotic lives of the Kendrick clan, I had a jolly good time. Until next time my fellow readers... read on!

Though she’s from a titled family, Kathleen Calvert’s behavior is certainly not indicative of her aristocratic upbringing. She wants nothing more than to return to her family’s beloved estate in Ireland and tend to the gardens and horses and she couldn’t care less if she ever marries. Her stepmother disagrees, however, so when her wild antics threaten to ruin her reputation, she’s banished to her cousin’s estate in the Scottish Highlands where they hope she’ll learn some decorum. She’s off to a lackluster start, especially one of her escorts is a handsome, but unfortunately staid Highlander.

Grant Kendrick had plenty of misadventures during his youth and has now shocked his family by becoming the most reliable and respectable member of Clan Kendrick and a wildly successful businessman. He’s attracted to the lovely Kathleen, but unfortunately, she immediately judges him to be the most boring man she’s ever met. Fortunately for him, their journey to the Highlands affords him opportunities to show her just how interesting he can be, but Grant will have his work cut out for him keeping Kathleen safe when their remote village is threatened by a gang of thieves, as well as convincing her that a life with him is just what she wants.

This was quite the romp through Glasgow and the Highlands, and I enjoyed that aspect of the plot. I think Grant made for a lovely hero and definitely the sort of man you’d want by your side. Unfortunately, I cannot say I found the heroine to be equally likable. Kathleen was insipid and immature and of course her sixteen-year-old stepsister, Jeannie, was much worse and got just as much page time. Jeannie was a spoiled brat who got entirely too much leeway time and again and her antics took up entirely too much page time. Kathleen at times was just as reckless, nonsensical, and immature as her sister. Kathleen is supposed to be a ‘scandal’ but for the most part she did nothing but snipe at Grant for either being too boring or for not observing proper proprieties. This made her seem very wishy-washy in her characterization. This inconsistency wasn’t helped by her snapping at him for nearly three quarters of the book, then suddenly being in love with him, claiming to have been in love with him for some time and refusing to deny it any longer. This is the sort of behavior you’d expect from children who tease their crush because they don’t know how to act around them, not from a grown woman.

Kathleen griped about the childish things Jeannie said and then said essentially the same things herself. She wanted her own way just for the sake of it, even when she knew others knew better than she did. Kathleen was so hot and cold with Grant that I was just frustrated much of the time with this story. Jeannie was just idiotic in her behavior, and no one ever held her to account. Even when she herself was in danger, Kathleen could think about nothing but her sister, showing her own inability to be rational and sensible. I enjoyed the mystery element thrown in here, even if it was easy to pick out the villain, but I wish it hadn’t come with the price of making the Kendricks look like incompetent fools.

I was also annoyed by the wild overuse of words such as henwit, ninny, booby, etc., to indicate displeasure or lack of intelligence. Once or twice might’ve been fine, but these and others were constantly thrown in and it just got on my nerves, as well as the adults referring to each other as ‘old boy’ and ‘old girl’ and especially the oft repeated phrase ‘aye that.’ All of this probably bothers no one but me, but I found it annoying.

It was frustrating to me how quickly Kathleen judged Grant before even knowing him and how long it took her to see how good of a man he was when that was patently obvious to everyone else. I honestly felt bad for him having to put up with the people around him and I don’t think he ever received fair credit for the fact that he was essentially the glue holding the family together, instead he just kept getting described as boring and that frustrated me. Between the antics of Jeannie and Angus, and the irregularity of Kathleen’s behavior, this never felt like a real romance to me and I’m still not really sure how Grant fell for her. Really, I was more moved by the connection between Grant and his twin brother Graeme than anything. This was too much of a slow burn and I don’t think Kathleen and Grant had enough page time together to make their love believable. After my high hopes for this one, I’m a bit letdown by it, though I’m sure the light-heartedness of this one will appeal to many.

This book was so much fun. Headstrong, independent women and sexy gruff highlanders, mystery and romance, laughter and love, it has it all on top of making me laugh out loud. I was so frustrated with Jeannie though, but her antics definitely added to the drama and adventure of the story. Overall, loved it and now need to go back and read the previous books!

Grants story was great! I love the Kendrick’s. Grant & his twin especially. Kathleen was a wonderful independent and headstrong heroine. I enjoyed watching her mature as she kept trying to keep her wild, boy crazy younger sister in line. Angus the grandfather was just perfect as always. Grant was a wild child growing up and had become a very “boring” workaholic trying to distance himself from all the trouble he caused. Kathleen is sent to Scotland by her family to escape gossips of a scandal. As they get to know and start falling for each other she helps hit let loose a little while he seems to calm her down. Great read, couldn’t put it down.

3.5 stars rounded up. Kathleen Calvert is the daughter of an Irish Aristocrat, but she doesn't act like one. When the possibility of scandal looms, Kathleen’s parents, hoping to preserve her reputation and save her brother's betrothal, send her to Scotland to visit family until the rumors die down. She heads north with her younger sister and is welcomed by the wonderful Kendrick family. Her constant escort is the handsome but dull Grant Kendrick, a serious businessman who has no time for Kathleen or her spoiled sister, Jeannie.

I liked Grant and Kathleen. I enjoyed seeing them gradually come to appreciate each other and thought they balanced each other well. Grant was a wild in his younger years and has settled down and become responsible, while Kathleen wants nothing but to return to Ireland and raise horses. She is adventurous and takes risks and Grant likes that about her. This book was a romance, but the romance took a long time to develop. It was a slow burn but, Kathleen's sister Jeannie, was a spoiled brat and took so much energy from the adults to keep her under control. This was one of those situations where the teenager, she is 16, had been so coddled and over protected, that when she is away from her parents, she lets loose and finds herself in some inappropriate situations. Although this is the fourth book in the series, it can be read as a standalone, but I have enjoyed them all, and suggest you do the same. I think this was my least favourite of the series, probably because of all the nonsense Jeannie gets up to and that she is allowed more often than not. I can't not talk about Graeme, Grant's grandfather. He has been in all the books and he is such a hoot. He is older and has no filter. He says what others are thinking, but it comes out so inappropriate at times, I had to laugh. There is adventure with robberies, possible kidnappings and some lives put at risk all with a romantic undertone. I have enjoyed this series and recommend it to lovers of Historical Fiction. The audiobook is narrated by Ruth Urquhart. I enjoy her narration of these Scottish stories. She does the brogue wonderfully and even the male voices are well done. She was able to do an Irish lilt as well so that Kathleen also had her own voice. Her expression and inflection is right on and I love that she is narrating this series. The publisher generously provided me with a copy of this book upon request. The rating, ideas and opinions shared are my own.

The Highlander's Irish Bride by Vanessa Kelly was my very first book of her and definitely won't be my last!
This historical romance had EVERYTHING I LOVE about this genre! 😍

When Miss Kathleen Calvert has to leave her home to Scotland she meets the rather boring Mister Grant Kendrick. Well the first meeting of Kathleen and Grant is really awkward because both can't deal with their feelings... soooo is Grant Kendrick more than he seems? Or will Kathleen count the days until she can go back home?

Awww!!!! I instantly fell in love with this book right from the beginning! All the characters are so cute so funny and lovely! I fell in love with them as well!
I laughed so much and swooned and was shocked a few times!
So much happens with Kathleen and Grant and even her sister Jeannie & Co!
I really really loved The Highlander's Irish Bride and need to check out the other Vanessa Kelly books too!
Thanks to Kensington Bolks and Vanessa Kelly for the ARC via Netgalley.

Ms Kelly writes some really fun books. I read this book out of order since I've only read book 1 before, I'll read all the others as well in good time :D

I liked both characters, but both of them could have done with a but more characterization. It felt like the book was more about the Kendrick family and friends, rather then the story of Kathleen and Grant.

The other thing that annoyed me was Kathleen's little sister. Teenagers are assholes, it's a rule, so whenever they are characters in books I want to punch them in the face. This Jeannie(I have a feeling I am spelling it wrong) was no different. Every time she made an appearance I couldn't concentrate an anything else, she was just so annoying!

As I said, I liked the book. The plot was resolved in the last 10% of the book and I actually guessed who the bad guy was before that. All that being said, I think I would have enjoyed the book more if I knew the secondary characters better.

The Highlander's Irish Bride
Book 4 in the Clan Kendrick series
Rating: 3 stars
Thank you to the publisher for the ARC given through NetGalley for review. All opinions are my own.

The Highlander's Irish Bride was a good story and could of been a four star read because I really liked Grant and Kathleen. They share many fun and tender moments together. I enjoyed the matchmaking antics that his family attempt so they can be together, especially by the grandfather.
Sadly to me the romance was overshadowed by the spoiled antics of Kathleen's step-sister, Jeannie. I really wish she would not have been part of the story. It takes a lot for me to not like a character, even the villains were more likeable then her in this story, but every time she appeared I really cringed. I can't believe they allowed her to do all that she did. I think Kathleen excused and easily forgave her behavior and spent most of the book apologizing for her sister's behavior to Grant's family.

I always enjoy a steamy historical romance, especially set in Ireland and Scotland. However, this one fell a little flat for me. It absolutely kills me to say this. The story building took a little too long for me, but what I think it is this book is #4 of a series and I haven't read the first three. There was so many characters for me to figure out that it made it difficult for me to enjoy the book as a stand alone. So maybe my review is a tad unfair in that aspect. I will probably seek out the other 3 books, read them, and come back to The Highlander's Irish Bride for a second chance. I just need to understand all the characters.

With that being said, I did love the characters of Gillian and Jeannine. They are fiesty and sassy, which intrigued me! I also caught myself speaking out Angus' lines of Scottish communication. I just loved it!

Thank you to Kensington Publishing Corp for the advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.

Vanessa Kelly takes readers back to Scotland for another adventure with her boisterous, meddling, and loving Kendrick clan. This time, it's twin Grant who finds himself on an unexpected journey to love with an Irish lass with a penchant for finding trouble.

When Kelly's Kendrick family is involved, I can be assured the story will be overflowing with adventure, mischief, humor, family, romance, and fun. This fourth book certainly has all of that. I enjoyed the slow-burn relationship between Kathleen and Grant. The progress of their relationship is very gradual, allowing them the time to move from acquaintances to friends to more. I liked the way they challenged one another and how each of them evolved over the course of the book. There's a sweetness to their love, along with the fire. They bring out the best in one another as, together, they are finally able to grow into their authentic selves, the people they were meant to be.

There is a rather large secondary cast of characters in the story, featuring many of the Kendrick family, which is always fun for fans of the series, as well as secondary characters from Graeme's book, The Highlander's English Bride, and new ones including an especially nasty villain. A special treat for me was the appearance of Gillian (My Fair Princess), one of my favorite Kelly heroines. She always livens up a story! Unfortunately, there was also a prominently featured character I did not enjoy: Kathleen's sister, Jeannie, an annoying, self-centered, sixteen-year-old who acted more like a spoiled, selfish child than a young woman. She dominated the story with her antics, to the point where, for me, every scene she was in overshadowed the other characters and not in a positive way. She finally redeemed herself but by then I didn't care. Others may feel differently about her but, for me, every appearance by her drained more of my pleasure from Grant and Kathleen's story. I understood her character's purpose in the overall story but I just wanted her gone.

The mystery was well plotted and even though I guessed the villain pretty early on I was still kept in suspense as to how it would all play out. The first half of the book was a slow build but the pace really picked up in the last half with both the action and romance racing to another satisfying Kendrick conclusion.

While I don't think you have to read the entire series to fully enjoy The Highlander's Irish Bride (though I loved them all), I do recommend reading at least The Highlander's English Bride as the characters, setting, and storylines from that book feature prominently in this one.

There are two Kendrick brothers left and I am eager to discover what kind of adventure, laughter, and romance Kelly has in store for them.

Witty and dangerous this book is #4 in this series.
Kathleen is the daughter of an Irish aristocrat who intends to never act like one. All she wants is to return to Ireland.
Grant spent his youth with dangerous and wild escapades. He has settled down to become a successful business man.
This book is a good one. Vanessa Kelly has surpassed my expectations.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. This in no way affects my opinion of this book which I read and reviewed voluntarily.

The Kendrick clan is definitely one of the most eccentric and interesting families in romancelandia. They have a complex family dynamic that is grounded by a great love of each other. Grant is one of the younger members of the family - and a twin to Graeme. Grant and his twin were wild in their younger days - but have since settled down significantly. Graeme is married and serves as magistrate for this community. Grant runs the day-to-day operations of the family's shipping enterprises in Glasgow.

One of the things I liked most about this book is that almost none of it is set in London. It is set in Glasgow and a remote community in the Scottish Highlands. I also loved how unconventional Kathleen was as a heroine. Kathleen is Irish and a bit of a wild child herself. She isn't interested in settling down to the same pursuits as other young ladies - including marriage. She really just wants to return to Ireland and live a quiet life on her own. But one escapade too far - has her family send her north to Scotland to visit her cousin Sabrina and Sabrina's family by marriage - the Clan Kendrick.

Kathleen and Grant are immediately drawn to each other - but Kathleen feels Grant is too boring and staid. Grant wants to get to know Kathleen better, but senses she isn't interested in him. As the story progresses into the Highlands, someone is behind a dangerous crime wave in the small town and Grant, Kathleen, and Kathleen's feckless younger sister Jeannie are all very much involved in figuring things out.

So - here's the thing. I love the Kendrick's and I adore Vanessa Kelly's writing - but this wasn't a total win for me. I was frustrated with how often Grant was described as boring. Grant is a hard working man who is dedicated to his family. He's definitely a workaholic - but also clearly a very good man. I felt like that issue also went on far far far too long. So much so - that the first 1/3 of the book dragged a bit for me. I also wanted more time between Grant and Kathleen.

I think it definitely helped Kathleen to develop as a character to see how her younger sister's actions impacted everyone around her. It definitely gave her perspective - but maybe we could have seen a little less of her.

Overall - this was just like for me!

I received this as an ARC from NetGalley, but these opinions are all my own.

The Highlander’s Irish Bride by Vanessa Kelly is an excellent historical fiction romance novel that is the fourth book in the amazing series: Clan Kendrick.

I have enjoyed all of the previous books in this successful series, however I feel that this could still easily be a stand alone.

I love the way that Ms. Kelly is always able to create such richly drawn characters that have such sparkling and sassy personalities. There is always wit, banter, passion, fire, and drive. Even though each book is unique in its own right, those classic concepts are presented in each one.

I really liked Kathleen Calvert. She is smart, sassy, fiery, unique, and a woman before her time. I liked the premise, and the combustion that resonated between her and one of her Highlander escorts, Grant Kendrick. I love the play of the opposites attract relationship. Both compliment each other well, and I really enjoyed their interactions, dialogue, and chemistry.

I also enjoyed the mystery that added complexity to the overall story and that helped unite the two main characters into a single quest.

I really enjoyed this book and really didn’t want it to end. I hope this series continues, and I look forward to the next book.

5/5 stars

Thank you NG and Kensington for this wonderful arc and in return I am submitting my unbiased and voluntary review and opinion.

"what does a Scotsman wear under his kilt? nothing, if you're lucky".

when i requested this romance on netgalley, i wanted to ready a sexy but fluffy romance with a strong dreamy romance world setting (the need to escape the daily life is still very strong) and Vanessa Kelly delivered.

i never heard of this author before, none of my romance friends ever talked about the Clan Kendrick serie or about another book of hers so it was a bet on my side. i tried to go on more solo romance journey but i just love sharing feels and thoughts for romance books that it is very rare for me to not have a companion. i'd say that the bet was a win as i just adored the romance, the characters, the setting, the dialogue, the ridiculous drama but there were so many good lines that i highlighted and i just wanted to send them to someone to share the sparkles with. i guess, i'll just have to do it with this review.

the story starts with kathleen, with who london life doesn't agree. her wilderness, her spirited temper and her wish for her home Ireland doesn't go along with the london society and all the protocol and etiquettes. following one more "faux-pas" she is sent to Scotland to let the gossip die, along with a delightfully knife lover of a Duchess (i might read Gillian's story next because i am so intrigued and enamored by her already) and her young sister Jeannie (a bit of a rebel and a grand lover of love - or a very thirsty young lady). in Glasgow and then in the Highlands, the two sisters will flirt with Kendrick boys (Jeannie will try to kiss one boy and almost cause his death - HILARIOUS), drink a lot of whisky, be the victim of a robbery and of a fire attempt, will have pistols point at them and will also fall in love (one with a vicar (like all thirsty ladies do), one with a very soft and sexy highlander).

kathleen and grant were exquisite romance hero. if their first dialogues together were a bit of a disaster, they slowly warm to each other and offer delightful funny scenes as well as sparkly flirty ones.

"To return to the original point of our discussion, sir -
Would that be sneaking off to find a nice quiet corner?
No, you booby" she tartly replied
"Och, it's a hard lass, ye are" he said with a dramatic sigh.
"Mr. Kendrick -
Grant.
Mr. Kendrick, do not force me to whack you over the head with my fan".

honestly, isn't this gold romance comedy? i love them. the two of them starting from disdain to friendly scenes, then to flirty ones and to adorable hilarious romantic proposals just warmed my heart. they made me smiled, giggled and laughed and there is no better praise for a romance than to really offer you pure joy and a lovely romance. you do have to enjoy various accents (scottish and irish), which i do (i don't know however if they are cliché or not).

as a bonus, to these two the assemble cast brought even more smiles and laugh. all the kendrick clan with the granddad, the brothers, the wives were just so lively and funny. it has a strong bridgerton and ravenels vibes but make it scottish. it offers the funniest sibling scenes and all the good dialogues and that warmth of family love and adoration. and i will not forget our romance thirsty jeannie who was as annoying as she was hilarious : someone finds her a man and all the pets, she needs them...urgently.

i don't know if the other ones in the clan kendrick series are as good as this one, but it can fully be enjoyed as a stand-alone and it will romance you at first page, it's a promise. the romance will be publish on July, the 27th!

I can’t get enough of Vanessa Kelly’s Clan Kendrick series. A family that would drive you crazy but there’s never a dull moment and you always know you’re loved.
In the 4th book in this series Kathleen Calvert is the wild Irish outsider of the family. Known for her scandalous behavior. But it’s time for her scandalous days to be over. If she can spend 3 months scandal free at her cousin’s Scotland home, she can return to her Irish home, the home she loves. For Kathleen, the task seems doable, but when she finds herself surrounded by her rambunctious younger sister, an amorous vicar, an out of control crime spree, and her cousin’s handsome brother in law, avoiding scandal may be impossible.
I adored Kathleen and Grant. Though Grant and his twin Graeme had been outrageously wild in their youth, Grant had become a precise, organized, staid businessman. Kathleen’s opposite at first glance. But despite their differences, Kathleen and Grant had an instant awareness of one another. Still, they each had a hard time reading how the other felt. That’s what made the story so fun. I love stories that feature couples that are very different from each other in personality. Mismatched lovers who turn out to be perfect for each other. The sparks fly because of those differences.
I also loved seeing so many of the Kendrick clan again. They always bring plenty of hilarity to the story. The Kendrick clan are inveterate matchmakers and watching them try to bring together a couple who thinks they’re unmatchable added so much fun to the story. The secondary characters were every bit as entertaining as the central characters. Angus always adds humor to the series. And Kathleen’s starry-eyed sister and the ardent vicar added even more.
As with all the books in this series, there’s the perfect blend of steam and wit. If you love feisty romances in which opposites attract, you’ll adore this story.

Miss Kathleen Calvert may be the daughter of an Irish aristocrat & all she desires is to return to her family’s estate to raise horses and manage her father’s magnificent gardens. But when a scandal threatens her reputation, her parents order her to a remote Scottish estate, hoping she will finally learn to behave like a proper lady. To make matters worse, her escort is a handsome Highlander who just happens to be the most boring man in all of Scotland. After a youth of dangerous and wild escapades, Grant Kendrick surprised his family and himself by becoming a successful businessman and the most respectable Kendrick brother. But the beautiful and free-spirited Kathleen deems him a stodgy bore Luckily, he gets the chance to prove her wrong when their carriage is ambushed by thieves. Then there are a number of ‘accidents’ around his twin Graeme’s estate.
The fourth book in the series & whilst I enjoyed Grant & Kathleen’s story I didn’t enjoy the amount of time that was spent on Jeanette Kathleen’s sixteen year old sister. I thoroughly disliked Jeanie & I would have stuffed her back into the carriage boot & sent her back to London, she acted like a spoilt three year old & threw tantrums like a three year old too. To think she could be having her debut in a year’s time – I shudder. I did enjoy Grant & Kathleen’s attraction & how they fell in love without realising, it took a thunderstorm whilst, yes you’ve guessed, searching for Jeannie for their relationship to shift. There’s also the mystery of the gang to be solved. An entertaining read which kept my interest.
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

Mixed thoughts, Almost too OTT, Sexy Highlander Saved it

This was my first book with Clan Kendrick and all their associates- however I highly enjoyed it! Kathleen & Grant’s story was a whirlwind of circumstances and I was not sure how they were ever going to get their HEA. There was a lot going on in this story and at times I found myself wondering what debacle would happen next, what would Old Angus get up to, and how Kathleen’s half-sister, Jeannette, would shake things up. This doesn’t even take into account that Kathleen & Grant have their own obstacles to get through, including learning how to have an actual conversation with each other.

Honestly I almost felt like there was too much drama and over-the-top situations in the storyline, that it detracted from the romance between the two MC. Admittedly this is my first book by author Vanessa Kellyas mentioned so maybe it’s just a writing style I have to get used to, the story may be more enjoyable if one reads the first books in the series and a few books from her other series. I think that would give more background on all the characters included along this adventure.

The story was saved for me when I got a solid epilogue—love those glimpses of HEA. If you enjoy strong, silent, fiercely protective highlanders and mischievous ladies, you will enjoy this story.

Vanessa Kelly has delivered a real "corker" in the latest Clan Kendrick series, The Highlander's Irish Bride. This is Grant's story. While he and his twin, Graeme, had been wild boys with many madcap adventures growing up in the Scottish highlands, Graeme and all their older brothers have settled down and married. Grant is bored with his job at Kendrick Shipping and Trade, but is good at making money and has sacrificed his life for his family. All this changes when he first sees Kathleen Calvert, his sister-in-law, Sabrina's cousin. Growing up wild and free in Ireland, her dream is only to return to her homeland. When he is assigned to escort her (and it turns out her stowaway younger step sister), he tries to maintain distance, believing that all she wants is to return to Ireland and that he isn't good enough for her. But when she and everyone around them is in danger by villains, he will risk his life to keep her safe.

Wonderful characters, witty lively banter and the funniest seduction scene I have ever read, make this a very enjoyable read. I read an ARC provided by NetGalley.com. This is my unbiased and voluntary review.

This was my first book by this author. I am happy I tried her our. This apparently is one of a series, but that did not by any means dampen my enjoyment. Our heroine is Kathleen. She's the unbeknownst-to-herself-soon-to-be Irish Bride. She is scandal walking--just wrecking havoc wherever she is. Sometimes, this is not even on purpose! Anyway, due to said scandal-making, she is shipped way out of town to let talk calm down. Surely she can stay out of trouble in Scotland? Of course not. Enter the hero, Grant. Ooh how we love those Scottish heroes. I was surprised that he was not the usual Highlander hero and seemed pretty buttoned down to me. It's obvious he needs to loosen up--realize that missing piece in his life is love. Perfect match, and I am glad I stuck this one out. The secondary characters were well written and brought the drama! I am looking forward to others in the series!
