Lisa Jackson is the number-one New York Times bestselling author of over ninety-five novels, including the Rick Bentz and Reuben Montoya Series, the Pescoli and Alvarez Series, the Savannah series, and numerous stand alone novels. She also is the co-author of One Last Breath, Last Girl Standing, and the Colony Series, written with her sister and bestselling author Nancy Bush, as well as the collaborative novels Sinister and Ominous, written with Nancy Bush and Rosalind Noonan. There are over thirty million copies of her novels in print and her writing has been translated into twenty languages.

Before she became a nationally bestselling author, she was a mother struggling to keep food on the table by writing novels, hoping against hope that someone would pay her for them. Today, neck deep in murder, her books appear on The New York Times, USA Today, and Publishers Weekly national bestseller lists.

With dozens of bestsellers to her name, Lisa Jackson is a master of taking readers to the edge of sanity—and back—in novels that buzz with dangerous secrets and deadly passions. She continues to be fascinated by the minds and motives of both her killers and their pursuers—the personal, the professional, and the downright twisted. As she builds the puzzle of relationships, actions, clues, lies, and personal histories that haunt her protagonists, she must also confront the fear and terror faced by her victims and the harsh and enduring truth that, in the real world, terror and madness touch far too many lives and families.

There’s a sick-minded serial killer in Savannah who is burying his victims alive and he appears to have Detective Pierce Reed in his sights, at least that’s what it looks like. Newspaper reporter Nikki Gillette is doggedly determined to not only get the story but to gain access to Reed and get him to open up to her. Yeah, that’s gonna happen.

The prologue begins with the first victim in that coffin and her death was chronicled in excruciating, painful detail, which set the stage for the story to come. I desperately wanted this guy captured as these murders were highly disturbing. It doesn’t help that being in tight, enclosed spaces is one of my deepest fears. The procedurals were tough to follow as the detectives were hampered by red herrings and leaks to the press, namely Nikki Gillette. When the killer shifts focus to her, things get even dicier, forcing Reed and Nikki to work closely together.

There wasn’t much in the way of romance but there was always a strong attraction between these two that eventually brings them together. One of the things I found problematic was how details of a case that may have been relevant weren’t revealed early enough for readers to participate in developing theories. With the procedurals all over the place, it was impossible. However, the mystery was interesting and at the last minute I opted to listen to the book because of the narrator. Natalie Naudus is one of my favorites and she’s the reason I rounded my rating up as her performance was outstanding and she elevated the story. I’m not sure I’ll continue the series (it intersected with her New Orleans series, which my group is reading) but if I do, I’m definitely going the audiobook route. She’s that good. 3.5 stars

I have mixed thoughts about Lisa Jackson's serial killer novel, The Morning After. Not far into the book, I had the distinct impression that the characters had a past together. This was confirmed when I looked up Jackson's Web site; this book was preceded by The Morning Before. In fact, Jackson has quite a few books under her belt-including myriad romances, which made it even more disappointing. If this had been a new writer, I could have forgiven the flat characters, unbelievable dialogue, and constant telling vs. showing. I should have known, though: The action was perfectly paced and the plot held my attention until the end of the book. It's rare for a brand-spanking-new novelist to master those things this well.

And the story itself was intriguing, with a cool spin on an old plot line. The prologue sets up the tale with a woman waking up in a coffin. Naked. With the original occupant still in it. And a microphone. And the bad guy laughing from above as he fills in the grave.

The main characters were mildly interesting. Nikki Gillette is an annoying, doggedly determined Savannah journalist trying to break away from mundane stories of school district news and onto the crime beat. Detective Pierce Reed, described as ruggedly handsome (sigh), despises the press and a past that haunts him. Cardboard, except he has some shady secrets that surface in this book, including a short-term but significant relationship with one of the victims. Reed's partner, Sylvie Morrisette, "smoked, drank, drove as if she were in the time trials for the Indy 500, swore like a sailor and dressed as if she were pushing 25 instead of 35." The woman complains throughout the book about her fourth ex-husband's refusal to pay child support. By page two, I was hoping she'd be a victim-soon. The Survivor is our man of the hour. He believes he is smarter than the police and has a bone to pick with Reed, but lapses into psychotic rantings and ravings. He likes to steal his victims' underwear and record the terrifying final moments of their lives.

Jackson throws red herrings like confetti, which is fine, except the characters spend a lot of time thinking and talking but not enough developing. Halfway through the book, I still didn't really care about any of them. And the cliché's! Don't get me started!

The two-people-in-a-coffin slant is neat and adds a weird dimension of horror to the already creepy prospect of being buried alive. Readers with visions of Uma Thurman as The Bride punching her way to freedom will be disappointed, though, as this story's women play identical helpless victims. By the third one: Bo-ring. And the short, racy "erotic" scenes between the evil psycho and his victims' stolen panties did little for character development, in my opinion.

Where Jackson might have shone, she chose not to. The Savannah police contacted an FBI profiler, but no profile is ever generated. Conflict between investigators is never fully explored, and may have been a lot more interesting than the long descriptions of Nikki Gillette's discomfort with the newspaper's technical guru. Gillette's brother had committed suicide-or was it an accident?-before this story; how about some of that? To call this a psychological thriller would be stretching.

Maybe Jackson didn't want to include all that stuff. Maybe this was a romantic thriller and she didn't want to go into police procedure and familial relationship dynamics. That's fine. Now I know her writing style and my reading preferences don't mesh. Would I recommend this book? Sure, if you get it for free.

The Morning After
4 Stars

The suspense plot is fast-paced with an intense and exciting climax and resolution. While the serial killer/buried alive trope is not all that original, Jackson has added a unique twist or two to the killer's MO and motivation. My one minor issue is that .

Despite the classification as romantic suspense and some hints at a developing relationship between Nikki and Pierce, there is no actual romance in this installment. That said, the dialogue and interaction between the leads are a highlight of the book. Both are well-developed with compelling backstories and is entertaining to see them overcome their preconceived notions and prejudices against one another to work together.

Overall, this is a huge improvement on the first book in the series, which was truly awful. It will be interesting to see where Jackson takes these characters next.

An outlandish plot (but it comes with the genre, I hear you saying) is sank by moments of painful stupidity. I could most certainly have saved the life of the killer's last victim and I've never had any training in police work or any type of investigative work. And here is how, genius me would have saved victim X: since both book characters and readers know the identity of the corpses whose graves and coffins the killer uses to bury his victims alive (I'm not giving anything away this MO is described in the very first pages of the book) then all you and I would have done is to go through the list of a finite number of names and check those who have died. Then dispatch a team immediately to the very finite number of graves and check which one has been violated and Bob's your uncle, victim X could have been found in time to save X's life. And FFS how many cemeteries does Savannah, Georgia have? I googled the city and it has a population under 150,000! Given that the killer uses graveyards (with the exception of the first murder) in and around the city then how difficult is to search for X kidnapped victim? But no, instead of doing the obvious, the police characters and the heroine sit around brooding, worrying, feeling exhausted, at a loss, angry, etc. What a bunch of utterly incompetent fools! It is not that the killer is clever, it is that the 'good guys' have the IQ of an amoeba.
Another major fail is that while the book is marketed as a romantic suspense there is no romance in it. Just a quick concoction that wants to pass as romance. Hero and heroine knew and disliked each other before the start of the book, yet they suddenly start having pangs of jealousy, wet dreams and turn to each other for comfort (very brief scenes where there is no development, no interesting dialogue, no hot sex, nothing). The whole thing is totally unbelievable and utterly schematic and it cannot manage to persuade any reader that this is love at second sight (let alone second sight with the passionate force of a delayed coup de foudre). An embarrassingly bad book by a writer who has done much better before.

A serial killer digs up caskets and puts a drugged person on top of the original body and he buries them alive with a microphone to hear their terrorized last moments of air. The killer sends letters to detective Pierce Reed and to journalist Nikki Gillette taunting them with rhymes. The first victim is Reed's former lover but the killer also seems to be connected to Nikki as her apartment is broken into and her tires slashed.

My library got this book in last week and I reserved it thinking it was Lisa Jackson's latest novel. It turns out to be from 2004 but I'm always happy to read any of her books from whatever year. Some of the chapters are narrated by the killer and we know he is male. I looked at every male character quite suspiciously. I was convinced I knew which guy it was, then no, it's this other guy, then no, maybe it's this one. I was wrong on all three counts. I probably should have known by the time the clues became evident, but I had a great time speculating.

I read The Morning After a long time ago in Dutch. I was looking through my physical bookshelf when I noticed this at the back. I vividly remember it being a very thrilling and suspenseful read. If Lisa Jackson's other books are as good as I remembered this one to be, I might try out some more Lisa Jackson crime thrillers in the future...

Ši knyga man patiko labiau (nei Tą naktį), skaitėsi įdomiau.

This book held my interest from beginning to end. It was one of those books that you keep telling yourself just one more chapter. I see that there are mixed reviews for this one, either you love it or hate it. Me, I loved it! Nikki Gillette , journalist, and Pierce Reed, detective, are thrown together trying to figure out why people are being killed in such a sadistic, and cruel manner. What do they have in common, if anything? As time goes by, the clues are coming together, but more people are being killed. Can Reed and Gillette put their heads together and figure out who is doing these killings and will they be able to stop him to save others? All in all a quick and interesting read. I will check out some others by this author.

I want to give this one like 3.5 stars. A good murder mystery storyline, but the mid-chapter changes in which character was being followed I was not a fan of. And it wasn’t just two characters point of views that were swapped between, at least 5 in the whole book. The storyline was good, maybe even an unexpected killer but an expected ending. An easy & quick read.

Good mystery

The book was good and the plot was excellent! Lots of intrigue and clues along the way. I was very disappointed by the graphic descriptions of the killer's sexual fantasies and the predictable romance between the cop and reporter. If I wanted a love story I'd read romances!

News reporter, Nikki Gillette, senses that the story she has found is a big one, so she begins investigating with tips from her late brother's best friend who is in the Savannah Police Department. Detective Pierce Reed refuses to give Nikki the time of day because she has always been a pain whenever he has tried to investigate cases, but once Nikki labels this new killer, "The Grave Robber," the killer's interest in her seems to grow. Nikki knows that Reed is the key to the case, so she sticks to him like glue but as they get closer to finding the killer, it becomes clear that they are now both in danger.

The Morning After begins with the intense premise of a serial killer who buries his victims alive along with a corpse already occupying a coffin. While the two protagonists are not the most likable of characters, the first three quarters are a taught thriller, focusing on the killer and his victims as Nikki and Reed try to piece together clues to lead them to the murderer. However, the book begins to fall apart when the unlikely romance between the two protagonists starts to take shape and the characters begin to act illogically. The clues draw the plot into a tighter and tighter circle, bringing attention to who the killer might be, but by this point, the reveal is a letdown. Overall, The Morning After is a strong thriller with many interesting elements, but falls a bit short at the end. 3 1/2 stars

The Morning After by Lisa Jackson is a nail biting thriller that will keep you whipping through the pages right up to the end. Who is this killer that is taunting the police, especially Pierce Reed, the tough cop who is getting personalized messages from the killer? But the killer doesn't stop there - they begin to send the same kind of personalized messages to Nikki Gillette, a journalist who is looking to report more than the local school board meetings and other such mundane news.

Pierce and Nikki have a history, and not a good one. Pierce thinks most journalists are scum, making his job to catch the bad guys much harder than it should be, and Nikki tops the scum list. When news comes out of a crime that Pierce is called up to, Nikki suspects this might be the story she has been waiting for. She discovers that Pierce knew the victim - well, at least the one that had been recently killed - buried alive on top of a dead corpse. She gets permission from her boss to work on the story with the lead crime reporter.

As the bodies begin to pile up, Nikki finds herself in a very dangerous position. All the clues lead to one man, and the police focus on him. But things are not always as they seem to be, and soon Nikki finds herself a target of the killer, and she and Pierce are forced to work together to solve the crime as they piece together the notes each one of them are receiving.

Get ready for a wild ride, and an unexpected ending ... The Morning After will keep you up reading all night!

This story is a good suspense story. It's well-written, complicated, dark and twisted. You're drawn into the story and what's going on, trying to figure out who the bad guy is. So it was a good read in that sense.

As a "romantic suspense", as the book is labeled on the spine, it's really damn lousy. It's the worst "romance" I've ever read, simply because there's practically no romance at all in the entire book. The book is about 430 pages long, and up to about page 250, Reed and Nikki have only 1 serious interaction, and throughout the whole book, I think they kiss twice. There's no emotional connection between them, nothing deeper than the case they are working on. And at the end, you're given only that they may be about to enter into some sort of relationship.

All that hardly qualifies this book as any sort of romance. Why it is labeled as a romantic suspense is beyond me. I was highly disappointed in that factor. If you're looking for a good thriller, you'll like this book, but if you want romance, I'd avoid it. Along with her other books, as I'm told they are much the same. Too bad I didn't know that before I bought 2 other books of hers.

I actually really enjoyed this book despite the very BIG errors I found in it. It's about one of the scariest things in the world--being buried alive--and except for the errors would have been a real winner. A big piece of the action hinges on the heroine having her cell phone and the battery going dead. Unfortunately, her cell phone was bagged up as evidence back on page 369 and was not given back to her. The detective shows up first at the judge's house, even though (pages before) police units AND an ambulance have already been sent there. Also, when it gets to the point that the detective figures out who the criminal is, the author says, "Suddenly he knew," which I thought was kind of a cop out. I guess there was plenty of info for him to make a guess, but still.... Then, in the epilogue, the detective shows up at the heroine's apartment "clean-shaven" and seconds later she's brushing her lips across his "beard-roughened cheek." Change your razor, guy! Oh, well, it was a good read up to about page 369. But where were the editors??

Pas bc The Night Before dl, rasanya pnsaran bgt sm kisahnya Detektip Reed. Tp bgtu bc, kok mengecewakn ya.

Alurnya amat sangat lambat, hampir2 mmbosankn. Saking gak sabarnya, akhirnya kuloncat-loncat k blkg utk liat siapa serial killer-nya. Hbis itu kututup buku ini. Udh gak pengin reread agar tau knp bs si 'dia' yg jd pmbnuh n ap aja alasannya.

Reed-nya jd gak charming blas! Kok bs trkenang-kenang scra sensual sm Barbara Jean, pdhal wkt mrk msh brhub, dia mrsa dibohongi bbrp kali sm wanita it.

Nikki-nya menyebalkan bgt euy! Bener2 tipe jurnalis yg mnghalalkan sgla cara buat dapetin berita n mndahului wartawan lain. Klo perlu sih, nukar tubuh skalian demi sebuah berita besar (mgkin). Tp tentu sj d buku ini si Nikki gak smp perlu melakukan hal it.

I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway and I was excited to read it, but I really did not enjoy it. First of all, I spotted about half a dozen typos, misspellings, and mistakes (there is a big different between an acronym and an anagram and both a writer and an editor should have spotted that). But putting that aside, I am not usually put off too much by graphic scenes in my reading, but some of the graphic sex was just too much for me. Add the macabre manner of the serial murders and putting it all together, it just didn't work for me. I almost put it down unfinished more than once, but felt like I should at least finish it because it was a giveaway. I am kind of sorry I did.
