Growing up in Hastings, Pennsylvania, I was called Ruth. I became Mary when I entered the business world where first names were the order of the day. To this day, family and friends call me Dink, a name my father gave me when I was born because according to him I was ‘a dinky little thing’ weighing in at four and a half pounds. However, I answer to Fern since people are more comfortable with a name they can pronounce.
As they say, the past is prologue. I grew up, got a job, got married, had five kids. When my youngest went off to Kindergarten, my husband told me to get off my ass and get a job. Those were his exact words. I didn’t know how to do anything except be a wife and mother. I was also a voracious reader having cut my teeth on The Bobbsey Twins, Nancy Drew, The Hardy Boys, Cherry Ames and the like. The library was a magical place for me. It still is to this day. Rather than face the outside world with no skills, I decided to write a book. For some reason that didn’t intimidate me. As my husband said at the time, stupid is as stupid does. Guess what, I don’t have that husband any more. Guess what else! I wrote 99 books, most of them New York Times Best Sellers.
Moving right along here . . . Several years ago I left Ballantine Books, parted company with my agent, sold my house in New Jersey that I had lived in all my married life and in 1993 moved to South Carolina. I figured if I was going to go through trauma let it be all at one time. It was a breeze. The kids were all on their own at that point. The dump was a 300 year old plantation house that is listed in the National Registry that I remodeled. Today it is beyond belief as are the gardens and the equally old Angel Oaks that drip Spanish moss. Unfortunately, I could not get my ghost to relocate. This ghost has been documented by previous owners. Mary Margaret as we call her, is “a friendly”. She is also mischievous. It took me two weeks to figure out that she didn’t like my coffee cups. They would slide off the table or counter or else they’d break in the dishwasher. I bought red checkered ones. All are intact as of this writing. She moves pillows from one room to the other and she stops all the clocks in the house at 9:10 in the a.m. at least once a week. When the Azaleas are in bloom, and only then, I find blooms on my night stand. I have this glorious front porch and during the warm months I see my swing moving early in the morning when the air is still and again late in the day. She doesn’t spook the dogs. I always know when she’s around because the five of them line up and look like they’re at a tennis match. As of this writing we’re co-habiting nicely.
Most writers love what they do and I’m no exception. I love it when I get a germ of an idea and get it down on paper. I love breathing life into my characters. I love writing about women who persevere and prevail because that’s what I had to do to get to this point in time. It’s another way of saying it doesn’t matter where you’ve been, what matters is where you’re going and how you get there. The day I finally prevailed was the day I was inducted into the New Jersey Literary Hall of Fame. For me it was an awesome day and there are no words to describe it.
I’ve been telling stories and scribbling for 37 years. I hope I can continue for another 37 years. It wasn’t easy during some of those years. As I said, I had to persevere. My old Polish grandmother said something to me when I was little that I never forgot. She said when God is good to you, you have to give back. For a while I didn’t know how to do that. When I finally figured it out I set up The Fern Michaels® Foundation.

The girls are off on another caper that this time takes some of them out of the country. Myra takes off on a crazy trucking expedition, that is so out of her realm that it becomes quite funny and unexpected. The ole gal proves to her pomp and circumstance self that she still has it. As I have said before, these books would be cozy's if not for some brutality that is needed to keep the series true to itself as a revenge story. I will definitely be revisiting this series and wonderful characters soon. Again, Laural Merlington's excellent voice brings the adventure and all of these eclectic characters to life.

After Myra Rutledge's daughter is killed in a hit and run, she assembles a team of women who aim to get revenge outside the law against those who have wronged them. In this book, it is Myra'a turn to exact retribution on the driver who killed Barbara.
This book was again a fast read, though it lacked the shock factor of the first two books. For that, I didn't like it quite as much. I did think the writing was somewhat better this time, though, and I enjoyed the juxtaposition between holiday cozyness and the horror of the revenge.

Third in the Sisterhood suspense series which is focused on righting the wrongs done each of the seven women.
The Story
It's Myra's turn for justice and Charles and the Sisterhood plot to kidnap John Chai, the diplomat's playboy son who ran Barbara down, from Hong Kong. The ladies aren't into killing anyone and, I must say, they do find a particularly nasty way of punishing Mr. Chai that is very much in keeping with his vanity and his and his father's viewpoints.
The Characters
I like the ladies for the most part. Charles is amazing…I want him cooking in my kitchen! But Michaels keeps slipping shoddy writing in that makes them too stupid for words. There are times I just want to smack Myra for being such a doddering old woman! The worst of it is that Michaels could write them so much better instead of slacking through their actions/speech.
Julia Webster is doing much better on her experimental HIV treatment in Switzerland.
Jack Emery has quit his district attorney job and Mark Lane has quit his FBI job and together they've opened up their own business, the Justice Agency. Jack is intent on proving that Nikki and her friends are up to no good and has posted spies up in the trees at Myra's farmhouse.
My Take
I love the concept of Michaels' story and that justice can be possible. I don't love Michaels' writing. Her treatment of her characters' actions and reactions is so juvenile—I have to wonder what her editor is thinking! Sometimes the ladies come across as a troupe of children. Sometimes I wonder where their wits have gone wandering. And other times, they actually come across as adults. At all times, I never doubt how much they care about each other. I suspect it's this friendship and the homey settings that Michaels crafts that are part of what pulls me in—besides the satisfaction I get from their brand of justice!
One of Myra's temper tantrums:
Charles' response is to remind her that she must stay at the farm to keep Jack Emery off-balance. So, naturally, Myra takes off for almost a week to help Kathryn deliver Christmas trees. Leaving the farm wide open to all sorts of mischief on Jack's part. Nor has she considered that no one will be able to contact her while she's on the road. Stupid. Selfish. And childish.
When they're about to arrive at Mr. Li's home outside Hong Kong, Nikki is wondering if she'll only be able to get tea after their flight. What? She grew up in Washington D.C. virtually as a daughter to Myra who has friends in very high places and has never absorbed anything about the world??? Just how insular is Nikki?
Then there's the scene where they encounter Chai and their disgustingly immature and obnoxious behavior. Sure, I realize the idea is to piss off or intrigue Chai into making himself vulnerable for the kidnapping, but, c'mon… I was embarrassed just reading it. Nikki, Alexis, and Yoko acted more like drunken, stuck-up, snotty, stupid college girls with a huge sense of entitlement.
I realize that exaggeration tends to make for more interesting reading, but, there is a line. One scene in particular was when the three girls come bouncing and somersaulting into the room in their slut clothes…yes, I'm serious, somersaulting like the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders…to finish setting the scene for Chai's incapacitation.
The entire scene where the girls confront Chai is so lame. You'd think that Myra/Michaels would have come up with something better than unprepared children with schoolyard taunts. Exaggerations on the most juvenile levels…jeezus… As for Chai's punishment. Yeah, I think it was very appropriate but still. It was so brutal that I cannot imagine that the ladies could get past it so easily. Just not believable.
OK, then there's the break-out scene…here's Charles, the supposedly super spy who lets the bad guy get the drop on him??? In this situation? Give me a break...

The cover continues the theme of the previous covers in this series with its peacefulness. This one a gorgeous maple blazing in its orange glory behind a white picket fence. I haven't a clue how the title, Vendetta, fits this story. "Vengeance" would have been so much more appropriate.

When I first starting reading this book, I thought it was a cheesy story but as I kept reading I realized that this was part of a series of books. The premise behind the books is a group of women called the Sisterhood that spend their time putting together very elaborate ways of seeking revenge on the people who have done wrong by them or ruined their lives in some way.
This particular book was about seeking revenge for Myra (whose name was chosen next from a shoebox). Myra's daughter Barbara and her unborn child were killed by a hit and run driver with diplomatic immunity. Myra is the heiress to a candy fortune and loaded with enough money to fund these elaborate excursions and her live-in bf Charles is an ex-spy for the Queen of England and has maintained a ton of contacts that allow them seek the ultimate revenge without being caught and being able to provide them with airtight alibis.
They seek their revenge without killing their victims. I like the premise behind the books since i would like to see certain people be able to seek revenge for terrible things that have been done to them. I can't wait to read some of the other books in this series to hear the other womens' stories and how they sought their revenge.

These Sisterhood books are easy, quick reads. My stomach still turns at the gruesome vengeance tactics used by the "sisters" but somehow I keep on turning the pages!

I really disliked this book. I haven't read any others in this series, so I don't know whether I just got a bad one, but I don't think I'll be reading any more of them. It felt like it was written by someone in high school.
Everything was just too convenient. They always had exactly what they needed.
I thought the dialog was utterly ridiculous; add this to the silly metaphors, and I found myself rolling my eyes A LOT.
And the revenge was also ridiculous and overly nasty. I didn't like any of the characters in the book.

The ladies strike again. This vengeance wasn't as I expected. It's still a good read that displays the prowess of this group of women. They're a unit of seven women that functions as one and can scheme with the best of them. How far they're willing to go to extract retribution. It's funny in some scenarios, thrilling in others and downright sad in others.

Sometime I wonder why I am reading this series. I thought it went a bit to far with the caning. I understand wanting revenge but think there could be a better way to do it. I did like what happened at the end with the mirror. Still I want to read the rest of these books.

Myra Rutledge, founder of the Sisterhood, finally has her chance to get revenge against the young man who hit and killed her pregnant daughter. The gentleman had diplomatic immunity and was taken back to China. The sisterhood takes some pretty risky steps to get Myra’s revenge.
This mission sure was a tough one. The girls had to go to China and get this horrible man back to the USA. It was a fun ride, though. This group of women keep me laughing and in awe by their skills throughout the book. Martin has some fantastic abilities and connections. The things he is able to do to help the mission are unbelievable. It makes me wonder if people in rea life have the same connections once they leave MI6. Book 4 in the series is on my list for next month and I can’t wait.

Okay, so I've read the first two in the series pretty quickly but have to admit this book was a little harder to stomach. The women don't really have much depth to them and to see them deal the physical punishment in this one I lost a little bit more respect and interest in them. I might take a break from this series for a bit, but will still return.

Fern Michael's just keeps getting better and better. I want to say this was my Sisterhood book but there are more to come and I think I will say that a lot.
This one really added to my loathe for Jack. But in the end you can't help but feel for Nikki. Another must read. Definitely recommend.

It isn't easy to root for the vindictive women in Michaels's Revenge of the Sisterhood series. Sure, they're loyal and fearless, and they look good in eveningwear ("We're stunning," lawyer Nikki says. "We sizzle and we look sensual"). But in this third installment of the payback saga, the six women commit a morally repugnant act likely to leave readers cold. Myra and her longtime lover, retired MI6 agent Charles, finally discover the whereabouts of John Chai, the man who killed their daughter in a hit-and-run accident five years earlier and fled to China. So Charles and three of the "girls" fly Myra's Gulfstream to Hong Kong, where they drug "greasy, oily, unctuous" Chai, disguise him as a sick old man and sneak him back to Myra's Virginia estate. Back home, Charles makes the women banana-and-macadamia-nut pancakes, and they frolic outdoors with their new snowmobiles. Then they retire to rat-infested underground tunnels where they don hooded robes and proceed to torture Chai in "a ceremony of sorts." Other than this wildly improbable scenario, there's not a lot going on. Michaels nips the subplots before they have a chance to create any tension, and her indistinguishable characters, unfazed by their sadistic conduct, have little to do besides eat well and cheer each other on.

This will be my last in the Sisterhood series for a while. While I totally understand the need for revenge, the graphic quality of what the group does to the man that killed Myra's daughter just turned my stomach and made me sick.
In addition, after the things they have put Jack and his friend through, I find it beyond belief that he would even consider not continuing to try and find a way to stop them. If the books were less graphic, or more about the women finding ways to prove people's guilt, or trap them into confessing, I think this would be a far better series.
I will continue to read Fern Michaels' Christmas and holiday books. They are so much different than this series. Perhaps I will come back some day and see if the Sisterhood takes a new direction.

The third in this series, and they continue to get away with their vigilante justice. This one was a little more far fetched as they travel across countries to capture the man that ruined Myra's life. They do find fitting justice for him, but not really convinced it would have all worked out so good.

August 6, 2020I felt this book was a bit violent for my taste, but given the story line, the revenge provided seemed appropriate. These are really light reading, but provide a break from all the issues of the day, COVID, economy, political situation, racism, hurricanes. I even have my husband reading them and we laugh about the escapades. We all need a break now and then.

Vendetta: Revenge of the Sisterhood #3 by Fern Michaels, narrated by Laural Merlington is another winner in this highly rated series! I am 100% hooked, engaged, and completely into the planning, process, and outcome of each woman's story. The series follows a group of women who have gone from mostly strangers to a close-knit, loving, and caring family. How? By working toward a common goal...seeking revenge on those who have taken away the happy lives they once led. Complete with unlimited funding, high-level resources, world travel, and plans to out-smart the cops, each book focuses on a different character's story from start to finish. As the group of women work together to ensure a successful follow-through of each case, I cannot help but root them on! Because the personality, background, motive, and personal story of each woman is unique to the others, all readers will find this series appealing. I feel like I know the characters on a personal level, and I even feel like I am part of their team! Not only have I developed an understanding for why these women want revenge, but I can also see why it is absolutely necessary for them to make peace with each situation before moving on with the rest of their lives. The bond they have developed is one that will last a lifetime, one that only the truest of sisters understand. :-)
Laural Merlington is the narrator of the Revenge of the Sisterhood series. Although I felt she did an awesome job in books 1 & 2, and I gave her a very deserving 5-stars, it didn't fully click in my mind until book 3 that this is really only one single person I'm hearing! I am amazed at her flawless ability to play SO MANY different characters, complete with their own voice, tone, accent...males and females...all within the same scene! I'm sure this book is good to read, but Laural Merlington's performance turns this entire series into a must-listen! I cannot find even one thing to criticize. She is award-winning amazing, and definitely one of the best narrators I've ever listened to!

I recommend you start at the beginning with book 1, so you can see how and why the group formed orignally. You will also be introduced to the characters and everyone that is involved in the planning and execution of each woman's revenge, along with the decision process of how the group chooses whose revenge is up next! You will adore these women and be inspired by what they each bring to the table. You will laugh with them, feel their pain, and rejoice in their success. You will see a bit of yourself in each of them and use their strength and individual talents to help you see and find your own. Most rewarding, though, will be the feeling you have as you become part of one another's lives, sharing in the wonderful, unbreakable sisterhood bond you have all formed together! Enjoy!

I feel like I know the characters on a personal level, and I even feel like I am part of their team! Not only have I developed an understanding for why these women want revenge, but I can also see why it is absolutely necessary for them to make peace with each situation before moving on with the rest of their lives. The bond they have developed is one that will last a lifetime, one that only the truest of sisters understand. :-)
Laural Merlington is the narrator of the Revenge of the Sisterhood series. Although I felt she did an awesome job in books 1 & 2, and I gave her a very deserving 5-stars, it didn't fully click in my mind until book 3 that this is really only one single person I'm hearing! I am amazed at her flawless ability to play SO MANY different characters, complete with their own voice, tone, accent...males and females...all within the same scene! I'm sure this book is good to read, but Laural Merlington's performance turns this entire series into a must-listen! I cannot find even one thing to criticize. She is award-winning amazing, and definitely one of the best narrators I've ever listened to!
Vendetta: Revenge of the Sisterhood #3 by Fern Michaels, narrated by Laural Merlington deserves 5 out of 5 stars across the board. There is no doubt in my mind that you will enjoy this series!! I recommend you start at the beginning with book 1, so you can see how and why the group formed orignally. You will also be introduced to the characters and everyone that is involved in the planning and execution of each woman's revenge, along with the decision process of how the group chooses whose revenge is up next! You will adore these women and be inspired by what they each bring to the table. You will laugh with them, feel their pain, and rejoice in their success. You will see a bit of yourself in each of them and use their strength and individual talents to help you see and find your own. Most rewarding, though, will be the feeling you have as you become part of one another's lives, sharing in the wonderful, unbreakable sisterhood bond you have all formed together! Enjoy!

My thoughts: 🔖Page 62 of 250 - Six I actually started a book so I would lose my Kindle streak. So far this one is a bit corny and unrealistic.
🔖140 Fourteen - Yoko sometimes speaks broken English and she has been ethnically ambiguous outside of being Asian but now it it seems she is an American-born Chinese woman, with a Japanese name. It makes no sense that she would speak broken English even if it were her second language. Li has an English father and was raised in England and went to college in the US, so why does he speak broken English and have a Chinese surname? The stereotypes and cultural insensitivity are starting to get on my nerves.
This one was okay, some of the language was dated (yahoo) and racially insensitive, but outside of that it was still just okay. I'm going to wait till next week to read more, at this rate I'm not sure if I'll make it to book 10 let alone 20, the guys are very slapstick annoying. I was hoping the ladies would be more incognito, the mistakes are clumsy and it's affecting my interest.
Recommend to others: Not sure, maybe.

Oh sweet heaven, it is Myra's turn! She wants the guy who killed her daughter and unborn child to suffer. He had diplomatic immunity. So that is hard in the US to get any kind of closure.
As the sisterhood decides on what the mission will be and who does what. They still need to worry about Jack. Yeah still not liking him. I'd like to toss him a river somewhere.
As the sisters and Charles go about the first step of Myra's revenge. The house is left with no one there. Jack sees this as his chance to find evidence that the ladies are breaking the law. Like I said, I'd like to toss him in a river.
Myra she goes out with Kathryn on a run in her rig. Yeah Myra thought it would be fun. She had fun alright, and even helped Kathryn not loose money.
While they are doing that the other ladies are in China, trying to smuggle out the guy who was responsible for Barbara's death.
The punishment for this man was wow! Then everyone got a lick in, and most the time he is screaming "you can't do this to me" "do you know who I am". I really have privileged people who think they can get away with anything. The sisterhood sure did show him. Goes to show don't mess with woman and a mother who lost her child.

This is the second book of the Sisterhood stories I've read by Fern Michaels. I love the closeness, protectiveness and the family feel of the Sisters.
I loved the pure revenge that this book is about. One of the sisters, Myra's, daughter and unborn grandchild were killed in a hit and run. The driver had diplomatic immunity and fled to his country shortly after.
Years later, the Sisterhood takes their revenge. I don't give away spoilers but I especially loved Nikki's part in all of this. The ending was perfectly wrapped up and I am eager to read more of the Sisterhood stories.
I also loved the cover - mine it bright yellow with 2 blood-splattered leaves on it. I think it's the perfect image for the storyline. I also love the simple title - it's all about a vendetta in this story and the Sisterhood carried it out perfectly.
There are numerous women in the Sisterhood and I think it's rare to actually like all of the characters in a group but I do with this group.

Myra’s name was drawn for the Sisterhood’s next revenge. Barbara, Myra’s pregnant daughter, was killed in an hit and run accident. John Chai,son of a Chinese diplomat, was the killer but escaped back to China without being charged. The sisterhood figured out how to get to China for an engagement party and bring John back on Myra’s private plane. As they hold John hostage, he is caned, a Chinese form of punishment. Myra avenges her daughter’s death, the women celebrated the holiday together, and enjoy their snowmobile gifts. They sneak him back into China where the government believes he has been tortured by a scorned lover. He is not believed that he has been kidnapped. Meanwhile, Jack and Mark are convinced they know what the Sisterhood is up to. They just cannot prove it and get “sick” as they try to pursue the truth.

One part of this story not at all good!!!!!!
I normally write good things about a book at this point after finishing my read, and up to now enjoyed the Sisterhood series. Most of the book was good, but feel the part about John Chai's punishment was not good. I felt it was way over the top compared to the "punishment" given to the others in the first two books in the series. When I come across areas in books with that type of description,that usually ends it for that book -----and series if it is part of one. But I have enjoyed the other two and most of #3,so I am willing to give the next one "a go" hoping their will not be anything like this in the next one or any of the others in the series.

Vendetta by fern Micheal’s is the 3 rd book in her sisterhood series. Vendetta is about revenge against a Chinese man who did a hit and run -and killed this couples pregnant daughter. The killer ( an ambassadors son) quickly returned to China under diplomatic immunity so could not be charged unless he came back to U.S.A. What’s exciting about this book is the father of the victim is an ex agent of M16. The mother of victim -myra Rutledge- runs the sisterhood group which consists of other females who have been victimized. Book 3 is a stand alone novel with very quick references to what revenge tactics happened in first two books. Look like a great series. Vendetta fitted perfectly for prompt #20 revenge story in the 52 book club challenge. An extra blessing it’s only 280 pages!
